The dependable way to stop false alerts from a camera watching outdoors is to remove the window from the camera’s path: install an outdoor-rated security camera outside. Glass can block or distort the heat changes that passive infrared (PIR) sensors need, while image-analysis cameras may interpret reflections, shadows, headlights or moving curtains as motion. Arlo’s support guidance summarizes the limitation plainly: “Motion detection does not work through windows reliably.”

If the camera must stay indoors, you can reduce—not completely eliminate—the problem by mounting the lens tightly and squarely against clean glass, removing interior reflections, testing Night Vision, and restricting detection to a carefully drawn Motion or Activity Zone. Work through the steps below in order, beginning with identifying the trigger in the live view.

Why a window causes false motion alerts

A camera aimed through a pane has two separate problems to overcome: the sensor has to interpret movement through the glass, and the lens has to form a usable image despite reflections and infrared bounce. The exact behavior depends on the camera’s detection method, but the window remains part of the sensing system in either case.

PIR sensors do not see outdoor heat changes normally

Passive infrared sensors look for changes in infrared energy, usually associated with a warm person or vehicle crossing several sensor zones. Insulated or double-pane glass limits the movement of heat energy reaching an indoor PIR sensor. The camera may therefore miss genuine outdoor movement, react inconsistently, or fail to distinguish a person from a changing reflection. Arlo specifically warns that insulated glass limits heat movement for PIR-based detection.

Frame-by-frame analysis can mistake reflections for movement

Other cameras compare successive video frames or analyze pixels. Those systems can detect motion in the image even when nothing is moving outdoors. A reflection of you walking inside, a television, a lamp, a curtain or a vehicle’s headlights can shift across the pane and look like a real event. Window frames and mesh screens can also create edges that change as the camera’s exposure adjusts.

Night Vision can turn the pane into a mirror

At night, many cameras illuminate the scene with infrared LEDs. Nearby glass reflects that infrared light back toward the lens. The result can be a bright hotspot, a washed-out view, ghost images or a sudden change in the frame that triggers an alert. Google Nest’s support guidance warns that reflected infrared can impair Night Vision and recommends avoiding nearby reflective surfaces. The same reflection can occur even when the outdoor scene itself is still.

The most reliable solution: move the camera outdoors

If the purpose is recording an outdoor area, install an outdoor security camera on the exterior of the building. Google states that an outdoor camera provides the best quality when the goal is recording an outdoor space, and Arlo recommends placing wire-free cameras outdoors for outside motion detection. Exterior placement removes the pane from both the optical path and the PIR sensor path.

Choose a model and installation point rated for the weather at that location. Check the manufacturer’s requirements for rain exposure, temperature, power, Wi-Fi range, local recording and any subscription needed for event storage. Mount it on a rigid surface rather than on furniture or a loose bracket. Aim at the area you actually need to monitor; a view of a busy road will produce road traffic events, even when the camera is functioning correctly.

Step-by-step troubleshooting for an indoor camera

Follow these steps in sequence. Change one factor at a time so you can tell which adjustment helped.

  1. Confirm the trigger in live view. Open the camera feed as soon as an alert arrives. Check in daylight and after dark. Look for your reflection, headlights, a television or lamp behind the camera, curtain movement, tree shadows, an infrared hotspot on the pane, or exposure changes caused by bright backlighting. If the alert always coincides with one of those events, the window is contributing to the trigger.
  2. Clean the pane and lens. Fingerprints, dust and condensation scatter visible and infrared light. Clean the inside and outside surfaces that the camera views, then clean the camera lens according to its manufacturer’s instructions. Do not use a wet cloth on an exposed camera or leave moisture trapped against the housing.
  3. Remove interior optical triggers. Move lamps, screens and bright objects away from the area behind the camera. Close or secure curtains that can move in the camera’s view. Turn the camera so it is not aimed toward a bright interior wall or a strong exterior light. Avoid direct sun and severe backlighting; both can create large frame changes that resemble movement.
  4. Place the lens flush against the glass. Google recommends mounting an indoor lens flush to the pane to reduce reflections. Keep the lens as close and square to the window as the installation allows, with no gap through which interior lights can reflect. A small angle can show more of the room in the glass and increase glare. Do not press a hot camera or an adhesive mount against a surface if the manufacturer does not permit it.
  5. Test Night Vision separately. Record a short test with Night Vision enabled, then compare it with Night Vision disabled if the camera offers that control. If the false alert or bright artifact appears only after the infrared LEDs turn on, reflected IR is the likely cause. Improve exterior lighting and keep reflective objects away from the pane. Do not assume that disabling Night Vision is acceptable if you still need usable video after dark.
  6. Narrow the detection area. Use the camera’s Motion Zones or Activity Zones to include only the outdoor path, door or yard you need. Exclude the window frame, road, sky, moving foliage and reflective interior objects. Ring identifies windows, mirrors, moving trees, sunlight, reflections and shadows as common causes of unwanted alerts and recommends Motion Zones to limit the monitored area. Adjust sensitivity only after the zone is correctly drawn; high sensitivity cannot compensate for a zone that includes the source of the false event.
  7. Stabilize and re-aim the camera. Use a rigid shelf, wall or mount. Vibration from a desk, appliance or passing foot traffic can move the entire image and generate events. Frame the important area so movement crosses the image rather than coming directly toward the lens; Arlo notes that side-to-side movement is easier for its systems to detect than movement straight toward the camera. Avoid pointing at a busy street unless those vehicles are intentional subjects.
  8. Verify the software state. Confirm that the camera is online, motion detection is enabled in the active mode or rule, and notifications are enabled for that mode. Check whether a schedule, geofence or privacy setting changes detection at the time of the alert. Run the manufacturer’s motion-detection test if one is available, then create a deliberate test by walking through the allowed zone.
  9. Move the camera outside when reliability matters. If alerts remain inaccurate after optical cleanup, zoning and Night Vision tests, install an outdoor-rated camera. This is the only step that removes the fundamental glass limitation rather than trying to mask its effects.

How to mount an indoor camera through glass with fewer reflections

Keeping the camera inside can be reasonable for a temporary setup, a rental property or a location where exterior power is impossible. Treat it as a compromise rather than an equivalent to outdoor installation.

Use a straight, close alignment

Place the lens directly against the pane, aimed perpendicular to it. A large gap allows the lens to see interior objects reflected in the glass. An oblique angle increases glare and can make the window frame occupy more of the image. Keep the mount rigid and verify that the pane does not vibrate when doors, heating equipment or nearby traffic moves the structure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove mesh screens from the optical path

Google advises avoiding mesh screens in front of an indoor lens. The mesh can become a repeating pattern in the image, reduce contrast and create changing artifacts when exposure or focus shifts. If a removable screen is present, take it out for a controlled test before changing sensitivity.

Control the room behind the camera

Turn off or relocate lights that face the window. Cover glossy surfaces and keep monitors, televisions and reflective decorations outside the lens’s field of view. A dark cloth or temporary blackout material behind and around the camera can help reveal whether interior reflections are responsible, but do not block vents or create a heat buildup around the device.

Configure zones, sensitivity and notifications

Configuration cannot make motion detection through glass reliable, but it can prevent known, irrelevant areas from generating alerts.

Draw the smallest useful zone

Start with the doorway, gate, walkway or section of yard that matters. Leave out the window frame, nearby wall, sky and tree canopy. If a road runs beyond the property, exclude it unless vehicle events are part of the requirement. Review the live preview after saving the zone; some apps represent the zone differently from the final detection mask.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Change one setting at a time

Lowering sensitivity may suppress small reflection changes but can also miss a person. Increasing it can make the camera respond to every exposure fluctuation. Make a small adjustment, perform a controlled walk test, and observe both missed events and unwanted events. Keep a note of the setting that produced each result so you can return to the last known-good configuration.

Use person or vehicle filters carefully

If the camera offers object filters, use them only after the physical scene and zone are corrected. A filter may reduce notifications without stopping the camera from recording or analyzing the underlying false movement. Verify what the app means by “detection,” “recording” and “notification”; those controls are often separate.

Day and night test plan

A single daytime check is not enough because infrared reflections and headlights can appear only after dark. Use the same framing and zone while testing each condition.

Test condition What to observe Likely cause if an alert occurs Next action
Daylight, room lights on Reflection of people, lamps, screens or curtains Interior optical trigger Move or turn off the object; flush-mount the lens; redraw the zone
Daylight, strong sun or backlight Sudden bright bands, shadows or exposure shifts Sunlight, shade or backlighting Change the camera angle, shade the room side and avoid the bright background
Night, Night Vision on Bright spot, halo or washed-out view on the pane Infrared reflection Improve exterior lighting, remove nearby reflective surfaces and retest
Night, Night Vision off Whether the false event disappears and whether the scene remains usable IR-specific reflection if the alert stops Use suitable exterior lighting or an outdoor camera if night coverage is required

What to check when alerts continue

Reflections from the room

Stand behind the camera while watching the live view. If your outline or a light source moves across the pane, the camera can treat that change as motion. Darkening the room side and moving the light source is a more effective test than repeatedly lowering sensitivity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Moving foliage and shadows

Sunlit leaves, branches and their shadows can occupy a large part of the frame. Exclude them with a zone or re-aim toward a stable background. Arlo recommends avoiding heat-changing foliage and direct sun when selecting a position.

Headlights and passing vehicles

Headlights can sweep across glass and create a large, fast frame change. If the camera sees a road, draw the zone away from it. Ring’s support guidance describes 30 feet as the standard maximum detection range for its devices; larger distant objects such as vehicles can still trigger alerts. That figure is Ring-specific, not a universal range for every camera, so consult your model’s specifications.

Vibration and unstable furniture

A camera on a movable table can generate a full-frame change when someone walks past or a door closes. Move it to a rigid mount before changing software settings. If the glass itself flexes or rattles, no sensitivity setting will make the view fully stable.

Rules and notification schedules

Some systems use modes, schedules or separate rules for recording and notifications. An alert at an unexpected time may be a rule-state issue rather than a new optical trigger. Check the active mode, enabled devices, notification permissions and any automation that changes them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing an outdoor replacement

When outdoor reliability is the priority, compare the following characteristics rather than focusing only on resolution.

Characteristic Why it matters for a window-related problem Questions to verify
Weather rating and mounting location Exterior placement removes the pane but exposes the camera to weather and temperature Is the camera rated for the installation site, and what mounting hardware and power method are approved?
Detection method PIR and frame-analysis systems respond differently to heat, image changes and scene geometry Which method is used, and how does it perform in the intended yard, path or driveway?
Motion or Activity Zones Zones prevent roads, sky and foliage from dominating event detection How many zones are available, and can they be scheduled or combined with object filters?
Night Vision behavior Exterior mounting prevents the nearby-window IR reflection that causes indoor artifacts Can Night Vision be controlled, and is supplemental exterior lighting supported?
Power and connectivity An outdoor position may be farther from power and Wi-Fi than the indoor window ledge What cable length, battery interval, Wi-Fi range and local-network requirements apply?
Recording and subscriptions Moving outside does not by itself determine how events are stored or notified What is recorded locally, what requires a subscription and how long are events retained?

Can a security camera detect motion through a window?

It can sometimes record movement through a window, but detection is not dependable enough to treat the arrangement like an outdoor installation. Insulated glass can limit PIR heat changes, and reflections can create false events for image-analysis systems. The camera may show a person in the video while failing to trigger, or it may trigger on a reflection while the outdoor scene is empty.

For a temporary or low-consequence view, flush mounting, reflection control and narrow zones can make the setup usable. For security decisions that depend on consistent detection, mount an outdoor-rated camera outside instead.

Practical maintenance checklist

  • Inspect and clean the pane and lens when image quality changes.
  • Recheck the live view after moving furniture, lamps, curtains or monitors.
  • Review Motion or Activity Zones after seasonal foliage changes.
  • Repeat a daylight and Night Vision test after a camera firmware or app change.
  • Confirm the active mode, motion rule and notification permission.
  • Keep a short record of sensitivity and zone changes so you can undo a setting that increases missed events.
  • Replace the indoor-through-glass setup with an outdoor-rated camera when dependable exterior detection becomes a requirement.

What the evidence does—and does not—establish

Manufacturer guidance consistently identifies glass, reflections, infrared bounce and scene placement as causes of unreliable alerts and recommends outdoor installation for outdoor monitoring. It does not establish a universal percentage of false alerts caused by windows; no independent prevalence statistic is available. The exact improvement from a zone, mount or sensitivity change therefore depends on the pane, camera, lighting and scene at your property.
