There is no single switch that stops every AI app from using your data. Open each service’s privacy controls, disable both model-training and personalization features where they are separate, delete stored chats or activity, disconnect integrations, and stop putting sensitive information into public chatbots. These changes generally affect future processing; they do not automatically erase data already retained, reviewed for safety, included in feedback, or used in an earlier model.
This guide gives the current control paths for ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Claude, and Grok, explains what each setting does, and shows how to reduce exposure when an opt-out cannot undo past use.
What is the difference between AI training and personalization?
Training is the use of prompts, responses, feedback, or other data to improve a provider’s general-purpose models. Personalization uses information about you to tailor replies, remember preferences, connect information from your services, or select recommendations. One switch may control training while another controls memory or personalization.

Turning off training does not necessarily clear a profile already built from your activity. Conversely, disabling memory may stop tailored responses while a separate training setting remains enabled. Treat these as two independent tasks:

- Turn off the setting that allows conversations or usage data to improve models.
- Turn off memory, personal intelligence, or personalization features.
- Delete existing conversations, activity logs, memories, and connected-app data using the provider’s separate deletion controls.
Feedback is a common exception. A thumbs-up, thumbs-down, safety report, or other explicit feedback can cause the associated conversation to be reviewed or used even after a general training opt-out. Safety investigations, legal retention, and security operations can also preserve data for a limited period.
What should I do first to reduce AI-data exposure?
Use this order so that you stop new collection before cleaning up older records.
- Open every AI service’s privacy or data-control page. Look for labels such as training, model improvement, memory, personalization, personal intelligence, usage data, or conversation activity.
- Disable training and personalization separately. Do not assume that one switch covers both purposes.
- Delete old chats and activity. Remove conversation history, saved memories, Gemini Apps Activity, or equivalent records. Deleting an integration alone may leave the provider’s copy of activity intact.
- Disconnect services you do not need. Review Gmail, Drive, Photos, contacts, calendars, files, browser data, and other connected apps. Remove access at both the AI service and the underlying account when possible.
- Use temporary or incognito-style sessions for one-off work. These sessions usually limit history, but read the provider’s retention statement; temporary does not always mean immediate deletion.
- Stop sending sensitive material. Replace names, account numbers, addresses, and identifiers with neutral placeholders. Do not upload identity documents, health records, confidential contracts, or private company files to consumer chatbots.
- Check feedback history. If you rated a response or submitted a report, assume that conversation may be handled under a separate review rule.
- Verify the result. Sign out and back in, inspect the setting again, and confirm that old activity has disappeared from the relevant dashboard.
How do I stop ChatGPT from using my chats?
In ChatGPT, turn off Improve the model for everyone under Settings > Data controls. OpenAI says new conversations will then not be used to improve its models, but feedback and previously retained data are separate issues.

- Open ChatGPT and select your profile menu.
- Choose Settings, then Data controls.
- Switch Improve the model for everyone off.
- Close and reopen the settings panel to confirm the switch remains off.
OpenAI’s stated effect is forward-looking: “After you opt out, we won’t use your new conversations to improve our models.” That promise applies to new conversations after the opt-out, not necessarily to chats collected earlier.
Use Temporary Chat for sensitive one-off work
Choose Temporary Chat when it is available in the model or chat-mode selector. Temporary chats are designed for conversations you do not want in normal history, but you should still avoid entering secrets because temporary handling can include limited retention for abuse prevention and safety review.
Delete existing conversations and consider feedback
Delete old conversations from the chat-history menu or the data-controls area. If you used thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback, the associated conversation may still be used for training or review even with the general improvement switch disabled. Do not submit feedback on a conversation that contains information you want excluded.
How do I turn off Gemini personalization and connected-app use?
For Gemini, turn off Keep Activity, then review Connected Apps and Personal Intelligence. Google says connected-app summaries, excerpts, generated media, and inferences can be used to improve services and train models while Keep Activity is on.

Disable Keep Activity
- Open Gemini and your Google account controls.
- Go to Gemini Apps Activity or the related activity settings.
- Turn Keep Activity off.
- Review the deletion options and remove existing Gemini Apps Activity rather than leaving older records in place.
With Keep Activity off, Google states that temporary chats are retained for 72 hours and are not used to train models. That 72-hour period is a retention window, not an instant-erasure guarantee. Submitting feedback can create an exception.
Review connected apps and Personal Intelligence
Open Gemini’s Connected Apps or Personal Intelligence controls and disconnect services you do not need. Removing an app connection does not erase Gemini Apps Activity already stored, so delete the activity separately. Also review whether Gemini can draw on Gmail, Drive, Photos, or other services; a disconnected app should no longer provide new context, but previously generated summaries or excerpts may remain until deleted under the activity controls.
Can Microsoft Copilot remember me, and can I stop it?
Yes. Copilot’s memory and personalization controls are separate from its conversation-training control. Review Memory > Personalization and memory, Microsoft usage data, and Privacy > Training on conversation activity in the profile menu.
Disable memory and personalization
- Open the Copilot profile menu.
- Choose Memory, then Personalization and memory.
- Turn personalization and memory off, and review any saved memories for deletion.
- Confirm the change. Microsoft says Copilot will forget its memories of your conversations when personalization and memory are turned off.
Turn off conversation training separately
Return to the profile menu and open Privacy > Training on conversation activity. Disable the training option even if memory is already off. Then review Microsoft usage data; usage-data controls can affect analytics or service improvement beyond the specific conversation-training switch.
Check advertising and account type
Personalized advertising has its own setting. Turning off Copilot personalization does not automatically disable ad personalization, so inspect the advertising control separately if that is part of your goal.
Work or school Copilot Chat has enterprise data protection. Microsoft says prompts and responses in that environment are not used to train foundation models, although an organization’s administrators can access logs. Do not treat an employer-managed account as private from the employer; ask your administrator about retention, eDiscovery, and monitoring policies.
Does Claude train on my conversations?
For consumer Claude, review the setting that allows chats and coding sessions to improve Claude. Anthropic says consumer data is used when the user allows it, with exceptions for safety-flagged conversations, explicit feedback, and other explicit opt-ins.

Disable improvement use
- Open Claude’s account or privacy settings.
- Find the control for allowing chats and coding sessions to improve Claude.
- Turn it off and save the setting.
- Review any feedback or safety reports you submitted, because those interactions may remain eligible for review.
Delete conversations and understand the retention window
Delete conversations from the Claude dashboard. Anthropic says backend deletion normally occurs within 30 days, subject to legal, security, and safety exceptions. The dashboard removal therefore may be immediate to you while backend copies are still being processed.

Consumer versus commercial Claude
Anthropic states that commercial Claude inputs and outputs are not used for training by default. “Commercial” generally means an organization’s managed product or API arrangement, not simply a personal account that happens to be used for work. Confirm the terms for your organization’s specific plan and avoid placing regulated or confidential information in a consumer workspace.
How do I opt out of Grok training and personalization?
In Grok on X, open Privacy & Safety > Data sharing and personalization > Grok & Third-party Collaborators. Turn off both the training or fine-tuning option and Grok Personalization, then delete conversation history from the same area.
Disable both controls
- Open X’s account menu and choose Settings and privacy.
- Open Privacy & Safety, then Data sharing and personalization.
- Select Grok & Third-party Collaborators.
- Turn off the training or fine-tuning option.
- Turn off Grok Personalization.
- Use the deletion control for Grok conversation history.
X says deleted conversations are removed within 30 days unless security or legal retention applies. Making your X account private prevents posts from being used to train underlying Grok models or surfaced in responses, but it does not erase conversations already sent to Grok.
Understand the public-post distinction
Grok can receive information from your interactions with the AI and, depending on account and product behavior, from public X content. A training opt-out is not the same as removing public posts from the internet or preventing every form of learning through a deployed product. Review your post visibility and delete sensitive public material separately.
Which AI privacy controls differ by provider?
The practical differences are easiest to see side by side. “Opt-out” means the provider starts with use allowed unless you disable it; “opt-in” means use requires your permission. A separate personalization switch controls memory or tailoring rather than general model improvement.

How do I delete data that an AI app already stored?
Use the provider’s own activity or history dashboard; deleting a browser shortcut, mobile app, or connected service does not delete server-side records.

Delete in three layers
- Conversation layer: remove individual chats, projects, files, and saved prompts from the AI app.
- Activity layer: clear account-level logs such as Gemini Apps Activity, Copilot history, or equivalent usage records.
- Integration layer: revoke the AI app’s access in the connected service’s security page and remove any imported copies from the AI app.
Keep a dated screenshot or export of the confirmation if you need to demonstrate that a request was made. A deletion request may have a processing period: Anthropic and X each state a normal 30-day backend window for their consumer conversation deletions, while Gemini states a 72-hour temporary-chat retention period when Keep Activity is off. Legal, safety, and security exceptions can extend retention.
How can I minimize the personal data I give AI apps?
Privacy controls work best when little sensitive information enters the system in the first place. Australia’s Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC), in guidance updated 17 January 2025, recommends that organizations avoid entering personal information—particularly sensitive information—into publicly available generative-AI tools because of significant and complex privacy risks.

Canada’s privacy commissioner recommends using anonymized or de-identified information within prompts where possible and reasonable. Replace a person’s name with Employee A, replace an account number with ACCOUNT_ID, and summarize a medical or legal document instead of uploading the original. Keep the key facts needed for the task while removing direct identifiers.
Keep secrets out of prompts and uploads
- Do not paste passwords, authentication codes, payment-card numbers, government identifiers, or private encryption keys.
- Do not upload identity documents, health records, payroll files, customer databases, or confidential contracts to consumer chatbots.
- Remove hidden metadata from documents and images when practical.
- Use synthetic examples for troubleshooting, coding, and spreadsheet questions.
- Review generated text before sharing it; a response can reproduce details from the prompt or connected data.
Limit integrations
Grant access only to the service and folders needed for the task. Disconnect Gmail, Drive, Photos, calendars, contacts, or other sources that you do not use. Integration permissions can expand the information available for summaries and inferences even when you never paste that information into the chat box.

An opt-out is not a universal eraser. It normally stops a defined category of future use, but it cannot reliably reverse every prior copy, human review, derived inference, or model change.
- Earlier activity: data collected before the switch may remain until you delete it under the provider’s retention process.
- Feedback: ratings, reports, and explicit comments can be handled under a separate review or training rule.
- Safety and security: providers may retain or inspect flagged conversations to prevent abuse, investigate incidents, or protect users.
- Legal obligations: records can be retained when law, litigation, or regulatory requirements apply.
- Derived information: a provider may have created summaries, embeddings, or inferences before deletion; the public settings do not always describe how each derivative is handled.
- Public information: making a profile private or deleting a post changes future availability but does not guarantee that copies, screenshots, or prior model inputs disappear.
How can I check that an opt-out actually worked?
Perform a short verification instead of assuming the first click succeeded.
- Record the date and time of each change, including the exact setting name.
- Refresh the page or sign out and back in, then confirm the control is still disabled.
- Open the activity dashboard and check that new test chats are not being added to the history you intended to disable.
- Inspect connected-app permissions in both the AI service and the source account.
- Delete the test conversation and verify that it no longer appears in history or search.
- Check the provider’s privacy or help documentation for exceptions that apply to feedback, safety review, business accounts, or legal retention.
If a control is missing, your account type, region, administrator policy, or app version may differ. Update the app, try the web account portal, and ask the account administrator or provider support which policy governs your account. Do not assume that a missing switch means data is never used.

What should businesses do differently?
Consumer opt-outs are not a substitute for an organizational data-governance policy. Businesses should approve specific AI services, define prohibited data classes, and use managed business offerings with contractual terms that address training, retention, access, and deletion.
- Classify data before prompting: public, internal, confidential, regulated, or restricted.
- Require anonymization for support tickets, HR cases, customer records, and incident reports.
- Use role-based access and single sign-on so accounts can be disabled when staff leave.
- Set retention and deletion rules for chats, uploaded files, logs, and administrator exports.
- Tell employees that enterprise protection can prevent foundation-model training while still allowing administrators to access logs.
- Review vendor changes periodically; privacy controls and product names can change without changing the organization’s policy.

Can I stop an AI app from remembering something without deleting my whole account?
Usually, yes. Delete the specific saved memory or conversation, then disable the service’s memory or personalization control; account deletion is a broader step that may affect files, subscriptions, and access. Check whether the provider offers a separate memory-management page rather than relying only on chat deletion.
Does using a paid AI plan automatically keep my prompts private?
No. Payment status alone does not define training, retention, administrator access, or legal handling. Read the terms for the exact consumer, team, enterprise, or API product and confirm who can access logs.

What happens if an AI app has already produced a profile about me?
Ask the provider to delete the underlying activity and any saved memories, but recognize that public settings may not describe every derived profile or model artifact. Removing future access and minimizing new data are still useful even when complete reversal cannot be verified.
Should I use a VPN to stop AI personalization?
A VPN can change how your network address is seen, but it does not disable account-based memory, chat history, connected-app access, feedback handling, or model-improvement settings. Provider privacy controls and data minimization address the main sources of personalization.
How often should I recheck these privacy settings?
Recheck after a major app redesign, account-plan change, new integration, or security incident, and at least whenever you begin using a new AI feature. A control can be renamed or moved even though the underlying choice remains available.
