If your Mac feels slow, first find out whether the whole computer is affected or just one app or task—and when the slowdown began. Low startup-disk space, memory pressure, an incompatible or resource-heavy app, and disk problems need different remedies, so there is no single guaranteed speedup. Work through the checks below before considering a replacement.
1. Pinpoint what feels slow
Notice whether the slowdown affects everything or only a particular app, website, or task. A problem that began after installing or updating one app points to a different place than a Mac that has become sluggish across the board. Apple’s slow-Mac guidance recommends checking available startup-disk space, memory use, app compatibility, apps you are not using, and possible disk problems.
2. Check startup-disk storage
On macOS Ventura 13 or later, open System Settings > General > Storage. On earlier macOS versions, use About This Mac > Storage. These paths are given in Apple’s Free up storage space on Mac article, published December 10, 2025. Review the categories and Apple’s recommendations before removing anything.
Free space by managing files you recognize
- Review Downloads and remove files you no longer need.
- Look for old device backups, large media files, and apps you no longer use.
- Empty the Bin after confirming its contents are no longer needed.
- If you want to keep large files, move them to another disk or an external storage device. Apple specifically mentions Photos and iMovie libraries as examples.
Storage categories may take time to update after changes. “System Data” is a broad category for Apple and third-party files that do not fit elsewhere; it is not one file to delete. Avoid manually removing unfamiliar system files or caches. Apple notes that starting in safe mode clears certain caches, which are recreated as needed; that may temporarily free room for an operation such as a macOS update, but cache clearing is not a general performance fix.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
An external storage drive is useful if your startup disk is crowded and you want to retain large files. Moving files can make startup-disk space available; it does not guarantee that every slow Mac will run faster.
3. Check CPU and memory activity
Open Activity Monitor and inspect its CPU and Memory panes. The CPU pane can help identify a process that is repeatedly using substantial processor time. The Memory pane reports memory pressure alongside physical and used memory, compressed memory, cached files, and swap used.

Apple describes memory pressure as an indicator of how well available memory is serving current work. It is based on free memory, swap rate, wired memory, and cached files—not simply a target amount of “free RAM.” Cached memory can be available to help when apps are reopened. Apple’s Activity Monitor guidance explains the memory information, including: “Memory pressure is determined by the amount of free memory, swap rate, wired memory, and file cached memory.”
Act on an app you can identify
If a particular app is unusually busy or memory-heavy and you do not need it right now, save your work and quit it. Recheck the Mac afterward. Do not force quit unfamiliar system processes: Activity Monitor can help locate a suspect, but a high reading by itself does not establish that a process is safe to stop.

4. Check whether a slow app is compatible
If the slowdown is concentrated in one app, check that app’s system requirements and confirm they support your Mac’s processor and graphics hardware. If needed, find your Mac’s model and configuration in About This Mac or System Report, then compare those details with the app maker’s requirements. Apple lists incompatible apps among possible causes of a slow Mac.
Menu names and available settings vary by macOS version. Apple’s slow-Mac guide is version-selectable, and the installed version matters when following any instructions; check your macOS version before using version-specific steps.

5. Use Disk Utility when a disk problem is plausible
If you have disk-related symptoms or suspect a disk problem, Apple recommends using Disk Utility to verify the disk and try to fix it. This is a targeted check, not a routine speedup step. Follow Apple’s guidance for a slow Mac rather than running disk repairs without a reason.
6. Decide what to do if it is still slow
If storage, Activity Monitor, app compatibility, and relevant disk checks do not explain or resolve the slowdown, ask Apple or a qualified service provider to diagnose the Mac. The cited guidance does not specify a universal point at which service or replacement becomes necessary, and software cleanup cannot be assumed to overcome a hardware limitation.
