Size a database connection pool to the amount of concurrent work the database can handle—not to the number of users or application instances. Set a maximum that improves useful throughput without driving up contention, then ensure all pools across the deployment fit within the database’s connection budget. The right value is workload-specific, so validate it with representative load tests and pool and database metrics.

What a pool limit controls

A pool reuses database connections, avoiding repeated connection setup and allowing many application clients to share a smaller set of database connections, as described in the pgJDBC pooling documentation. Its maximum is also a concurrency limit: it caps how many callers can hold connections from that pool at once.

For example, HikariCP’s maximumPoolSize counts both idle and in-use connections. If all connections are in use, a new caller waits up to connectionTimeout for one to become available; it then times out if none is returned. Pooling therefore queues excess demand rather than automatically making the database process more work.

Budget connections across the whole deployment

Calculate the maximum possible connections from every application process and pool, then include other clients such as worker services, scheduled jobs, monitoring, administrators, and maintenance tools. Compare that total with the database’s configured ceiling and leave operational headroom; assigning the entire limit to application pools can prevent other necessary clients from connecting.

In PostgreSQL 17, max_connections sets the maximum number of concurrent server connections. The PostgreSQL documentation says its default is typically 100, subject to platform limits. This is a server-wide default, not a recommended size for an application pool. Raising the setting increases resource allocation, including shared memory, and requires a server restart. Check the documentation and limits for your deployed PostgreSQL version or managed service before changing it: PostgreSQL 17 connection settings.

For a simple upper-bound calculation, if there are N application instances and each has one pool capped at P, their combined maximum is N × P. Add any additional pools and connection consumers to that sum. Use the peak number of instances that can run during deployment or scaling events, not just the normal count.

Estimate useful concurrency, not user count

Start by estimating how many transactions can make progress at once given the database’s CPU, storage, cache behavior, query mix, and transaction duration. A connection occupied by a long transaction remains unavailable to another borrower for longer than one used by a brief query. A high number of front-end users does not mean the database needs one connection per user.

More active connections can help while the database has capacity to process their work. Beyond that point, concurrent transactions compete for resources, and throughput can stall or fall while latency rises. PostgreSQL community guidance recommends adjusting connection counts incrementally on the production system rather than treating a formula as a universal answer: PostgreSQL Wiki: Number of Database Connections.

Use heuristics only as test points

A rough rule of thumb in the PostgreSQL Wiki is connections ≈ (core_count × 2) + effective_spindle_count. It is a starting point for testing, not a law, guarantee, or target to apply blindly. Storage characteristics and workload affect the result; the related historical HikariCP sizing guidance itself notes uncertainty about applying the heuristic to SSDs: HikariCP pool-sizing guidance.

HikariCP’s project documentation lists a maximumPoolSize default of 10. Its minimumIdle setting controls the idle baseline and defaults to the maximum pool size; the project recommends allowing fixed-size behavior for maximum performance and responsiveness to spikes. These are HikariCP implementation defaults and guidance, not universal pool recommendations. Verify the deployed HikariCP version and any framework-level configuration against the HikariCP project documentation.

Load-test around a starting value

  1. Inventory connection consumers. Count pools per process, instances at peak scale, and non-application clients. Check that their combined possible connections stay below the database ceiling with room for operations.
  2. Choose a conservative test point. Base it on the expected database capacity and workload shape. A documented default or heuristic can inform an initial experiment, but does not establish the right production setting.
  3. Test representative traffic at several concurrency levels. Include realistic query mixes and transaction durations. Increase concurrency in steps and record useful throughput, tail latency such as p95 and p99, and database load.
  4. Stop increasing the limit when it stops helping. If added concurrency fails to improve useful throughput or worsens latency and database contention, a larger pool is not solving the bottleneck. Reduce the setting or investigate the slow database work.
  5. Repeat under relevant workload conditions. Include long-running background jobs and peak traffic patterns. Bound job concurrency where needed so jobs cannot consume all available connections.

Read pool and database metrics together

Pool measurements show whether callers are waiting for connections; database measurements help establish whether the database is busy or slow. Watch these together during load tests and in production:

  • Active, idle, and pending borrowers in each pool.
  • Connection-acquisition wait time and acquisition timeouts.
  • Query latency and transaction duration.
  • Database CPU, storage activity, and total server connections.
  • Throughput and p95 or p99 request latency.

If the pool is saturated and callers are waiting while the database still has capacity, the pool limit may be constraining concurrency. If connection holders spend a long time waiting on queries or transactions and the database is under pressure, increasing the pool can add contention rather than resolve the underlying query or database bottleneck.

Shape workloads and queues deliberately

A full pool creates a queue, which can protect a database from an unbounded number of simultaneous connection holders. That queue still needs an appropriate acquisition timeout and application behavior for handling timeouts; waiting indefinitely can turn a capacity problem into a request backlog.

For long background work, limit job concurrency to match the connections and database capacity available to it. If materially different transaction classes interfere with each other, separate pools may offer isolation, but they also add independent connection maxima. Use them only when that isolation is worth the additional capacity budget and operational complexity.
