To share durable project context between Cursor and Claude Code, keep it in a version-controlled AGENTS.md at the repository root. Both tools can use that shared Markdown file, subject to Claude Code’s version and instruction settings. This shares project guidance—not chat history or either tool’s private automatic memories.
What “sharing memory” means here
Cursor and Claude Code do not merge their conversations or maintain one shared automatic memory store. The practical cross-tool solution is to keep intentional, reusable project instructions in the repository, where both tools can read them. Suitable content includes architecture notes, coding conventions, build and test commands, important workflows, and decisions that cannot be reliably inferred from the code.
Each Claude Code session starts with a fresh context window, so project instructions provide a durable reference rather than carrying a conversation forward. See Anthropic’s Claude Code memory documentation.
Set up a shared root AGENTS.md

Write concise, stable project guidance in plain Markdown. Keep tool-specific behavior out of this shared baseline unless it genuinely applies to both tools.

Make Claude Code load the shared file reliably
Anthropic documents direct AGENTS.md reading in Claude Code v2.1.277 or later. It is read by default when there is no CLAUDE.md or CLAUDE.local.md in the working directory or any parent. An existing Claude instruction file can therefore change which instructions are loaded.

Use /config to inspect the Project instructions option. The documented choices are claude-md-or-agents-md (the default), claude-md-and-agents-md, claude-md, and managed-only. The managed-only setting omits project and user instructions at launch.
Fallback: import AGENTS.md from CLAUDE.md
If you need a CLAUDE.md, place it beside the shared file and add this near the top:

## Claude Code
Add any Claude-specific instructions here.This keeps the common guidance in one file while allowing a separate section for Claude-only instructions. Anthropic also documents symlinking CLAUDE.md to AGENTS.md, but notes that Claude Code’s Edit and Write tools refuse to write through symlinks and that Windows clones may not preserve a committed symlink as one unless Git is configured for it. For mixed Windows, macOS, and Linux teams, the import is the simpler documented option. The setup and caveats are covered in Claude Code’s memory documentation.
Keep tool-specific rules where they belong
A shared root file is a baseline, not a replacement for each tool’s native rule system.

Claude Code: Use
CLAUDE.mdor.claude/rules/for Claude-specific instructions. If aCLAUDE.mdis present, configure or import the shared file deliberately rather than assuming the rootAGENTS.mdwill be picked up directly.
One root AGENTS.md is simple and portable, but it is less granular than Cursor’s path-scoped rules. Keep the shared file focused and use native rules when scope or product-specific behavior matters.
What does not synchronize
Claude Code’s auto memory is separate from repository instructions. Anthropic places it under ~/.claude/projects/<project>/memory/. Its project path derives from the Git repository, so subdirectories and worktrees in that repository share it on that machine. The memory files are machine-local; they are not shared across machines or cloud environments.

Cursor’s rules and memories are also separate product features. A committed AGENTS.md shares intentional project context, but it does not merge Cursor and Claude Code chat transcripts or local automatic memory stores.
Migrate existing Cursor rules without creating drift
Claude Code’s /init can read Cursor rules in .cursor/rules/ or legacy .cursorrules and incorporate relevant material into a generated CLAUDE.md. The /import command imports supported coding-agent configuration as a one-time operation and requires Claude Code v2.1.213 or later. These are migration tools, not continuous two-way synchronization. After importing, choose a clear source of truth and update tool-specific copies deliberately.
