Steam Remote Play Together lets friends join a supported local multiplayer game over the internet without buying or installing it. The host signs in to Steam, owns and runs the game, then invites friends through the in-game Steam Overlay. Steam streams the host computer’s video and audio to each guest and returns each guest’s controller or keyboard input to the host. To begin, confirm that the game lists Remote Play Together, launch its local multiplayer mode, press Shift+Tab, choose a friend, and select Remote Play Together.
What Steam Remote Play Together does
Remote Play Together turns a local multiplayer, local co-op, shared-screen, or split-screen game into an online session. The game still runs on one computer: the host’s PC. Steam captures that computer’s game video and audio, streams the result to invited guests, and sends their input back to the host as though additional controllers were connected locally.
Only the host needs to own and install the game. Guests join through Steam’s streaming technology, so they do not need their own copy for that session. This is different from ordinary online multiplayer, where every participant may need a license and a separate game instance.
The arrangement has important limits. Remote Play Together is game-specific, not a universal Steam feature. The store page must identify the title as supporting Remote Play Together, usually alongside Local Multiplayer, Local Co-op, or Shared/Split Screen. A developer can disable the feature, and a game that supports local play may still omit Remote Play Together. Virtual-reality games are excluded. Streaming a non-Steam game can sometimes work, but Steam does not officially support that use.

Valve’s current overview describes sessions for up to four players, with more possible on very fast connections. The practical limit is determined by the game’s local-player count, the host computer, and the network path rather than by a guarantee that every title will accept four guests.
Check compatibility before inviting anyone
Do these checks before arranging a session. They prevent the most common situation: a friend is ready, but the game cannot expose a Remote Play Together invitation or has no local-player join screen.
| Check | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Game feature | The current Steam store page lists Remote Play Together and a local multiplayer, local co-op, or shared/split-screen capability. | The feature is enabled per title and may be removed or disabled by its developer. |
| Local player capacity | Read the game’s local-player description and determine whether it uses shared screen or split screen. | Remote Play Together cannot add more players than the game’s local mode accepts. |
| Host computer | A capable PC running Steam and the game; Steam recommends at least a quad-core CPU for the computer running the game. | The host renders the game and performs the capture and streaming work. |
| Guest device | Another PC running Steam or a supported device running Steam Link. The receiving device should have a GPU capable of hardware-accelerated H.264 decoding. | The guest must decode the video stream and send input reliably. |
| Network path | Prefer Ethernet for the host and, where possible, the Steam Link path. Wi-Fi can work but is more sensitive to interference and congestion. | Remote play is interactive streaming; packet loss and variable delay affect controls and picture quality. |
| Input method | Check whether the game expects controllers, keyboard and mouse, or a mixture. | Each guest must have an input device the game recognizes as an additional local player. |
| VR support | Do not plan a VR session. | Remote Play Together does not support virtual-reality games. |
Set up a Remote Play Together session
- Sign in on the host PC. Open Steam on the computer that owns the game and make sure the intended host account is online.
- Install the game on the host. The host must have the complete game installed and be able to launch it locally. Guests do not need an installation.
- Confirm the store-page feature. Open the game’s Steam store page and look in its features or details area for Remote Play Together. Also confirm the local multiplayer mode and player count.
- Launch the game. Start it from the host’s Steam library and wait until the main menu or another point where local multiplayer is available.
- Enter local multiplayer. Choose the game’s local co-op, local multiplayer, shared-screen, or split-screen option. Some titles do not expose the additional-player join prompt until this mode is active.
- Open the Steam Overlay. Press Shift+Tab while the game is running. If the shortcut does nothing, check Steam’s in-game overlay setting and make sure another application has not captured the key combination.
- Invite a friend. Open the Friends list in the Overlay, select the friend, and choose Remote Play Together. The invitation is sent from the host’s active game session.
- Have the friend accept. When the friend accepts, Steam connects them to the running game and begins streaming the host’s video and audio. Their input is sent back to the host.
- Configure shared input. In the Remote Play panel, allow or restrict keyboard and mouse sharing as appropriate. For controller-based games, have every participant connect a controller and use the game’s join screen to assign each pad to a player.
- Test before starting a match. Ask each guest to press a button or move a stick while the game is at its local-player screen. Confirm that the correct player slot responds before loading a long campaign or tournament.
These steps follow Steam Support’s sequence: launch the game, open the in-game Overlay with Shift+Tab, select Remote Play Together from the Friends list, and let the friend accept the invitation. The exact menu labels inside the game vary by title.

Connect controllers, keyboard and mouse
Controller-based games
Connect each controller before joining the game’s local-player screen. Steam officially supports Microsoft Xbox controllers, the Steam Controller, Sony DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers, and Nintendo Switch Pro controllers in Big Picture mode. Other controllers may function, but Steam does not promise identical behavior for every third-party device or every game.
If a guest connects but cannot move a character, open the Steam controller configuration or device view and check that Steam sees button presses. Then return to the game and look for a prompt such as “Press A to join,” “Join game,” or a player-slot assignment screen. A controller can be visible to Steam yet remain unassigned by the game.
Keyboard and mouse sharing
Remote Play can share the host’s keyboard and mouse with guests. Use the Remote Play panel to allow or restrict that access. Sharing is useful for a game designed around a single keyboard, but it can be confusing when several people press keys at once. For a controller game, restrict keyboard and mouse sharing and give each participant a gamepad unless the title specifically requires keyboard input.

Phone, tablet and Steam Link clients
A guest does not have to use another desktop PC. A supported Steam Link client can receive the stream and send controller input. Steam’s mobile flow uses the Steam Chat app to accept the invitation and then opens Steam Link. The mobile device still needs a practical control method: pair a compatible controller when the game expects one, or use keyboard and mouse sharing only when the title supports it comfortably.

There is no single latency number that applies to every Remote Play Together session. Delay depends on the host’s rendering load, the guest device, distance between participants, Wi-Fi conditions, and congestion on the internet path. Change one variable at a time so you can tell which adjustment helped.
| Adjustment | How to use it | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Use Ethernet | Connect the host PC to the router with a wired Ethernet cable. Use a wired connection for Steam Link hardware when possible. | Cabling is less convenient, but it usually reduces wireless interference and variation. |
| Reduce game resolution | Lower the game’s display resolution in its graphics settings when the host struggles to render or capture the session. | The image is less sharp, while the host has more headroom for encoding and gameplay. |
| Disable vertical sync | Turn off V-Sync in the game when input feels delayed or motion stutters. | You may see tearing; re-enable it if tearing is more distracting than the delay. |
| Change Remote Play quality | Open Steam’s Remote Play settings and adjust the speed-versus-quality preference. | Prioritizing speed can reduce image quality but make controls more responsive. |
| Limit network bandwidth | Use the bandwidth limit in Remote Play settings if the stream is competing with other traffic on the connection. | A lower limit can prevent congestion but may force a softer or less stable picture. |
| Lower maximum capture resolution | Reduce the maximum capture resolution in Remote Play settings. | Fewer pixels require less encoding and network capacity. |
| Close heavy background tasks | Stop downloads, cloud sync jobs, video streams, and overlays that compete with the host CPU, GPU, disk, or connection. | Those applications may need to be restarted after the session. |
Steam recommends a wired network for the best streaming experience and strongly recommends wired connectivity for Steam Link hardware. Its host guidance also calls for a minimum quad-core CPU, while the receiving client should support hardware-accelerated H.264 decoding. These are recommendations, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or response time.

Troubleshoot common setup failures
The Remote Play Together option is missing
- Reopen the game’s current store page and confirm that Remote Play Together is listed. Do not rely on an old game description or a previous session.
- Launch the game first, then open the Overlay with Shift+Tab. The invitation command is tied to an active game session.
- Enter the game’s local multiplayer, local co-op, or split-screen mode. Some menus do not show the invitation until local play is selected.
- Check that the friend is on your Steam Friends list and appears online or otherwise reachable for an invitation.
- Remember that VR titles are not supported, and non-Steam games are outside Steam’s official support scope.
The friend accepted but is not in the game
Have the guest accept the invitation from Steam, then wait for the stream to display the host’s game. If the connection returns to the desktop or repeatedly disconnects, close other high-bandwidth activity on both ends, move the host to Ethernet, and try again with a lower capture resolution or bandwidth setting.
The guest can see the game but cannot control it
- Verify that Steam detects the guest’s controller by testing its buttons in Steam’s controller interface.
- In the Remote Play panel, enable keyboard and mouse sharing if the game needs those devices.
- Return to the game’s local join screen and assign the controller to an open player slot.
- Check the title’s local-player rules; some games accept only controllers, while others require a keyboard for the first player.
- Disconnect duplicate or virtual input devices that may cause the game to assign the wrong pad.
Steam does not promise identical input behavior for every game, so a working controller in one title may need different assignment steps in another.
The stream is blurry, choppy or delayed
- Use Ethernet for the host and Steam Link path where possible.
- Lower the game’s resolution and disable V-Sync.
- In Remote Play settings, favor speed over quality, limit bandwidth, or lower maximum capture resolution.
- Close downloads and other streams that compete for upload or download capacity.
- Reduce the number of simultaneous guests if the connection is overloaded. Valve notes that more than four players may be possible only with fast connections.
The game has local multiplayer but still will not work
Local multiplayer alone is not sufficient. Remote Play Together must be enabled for that specific title, and the developer may disable it. If the store page does not list the feature, use the game’s own online multiplayer mode if available or choose a different title that explicitly supports Remote Play Together.

Plan a reliable session
When choosing a game or deciding whether a particular setup will work, compare the factors that actually affect the session rather than looking only at genre or player reviews.
| Question | What to record | Decision it informs |
|---|---|---|
| How many local players? | The title’s stated local-player count. | Whether the host can include everyone in one session. |
| Shared or split screen? | Whether all players see one shared camera or separate screen areas. | How readable the stream will be on a phone, tablet, or television. |
| What controllers are required? | Controller-only, keyboard and mouse, or mixed input. | Which guests need a gamepad and whether keyboard sharing is practical. |
| Is Remote Play Together listed? | The feature shown on the current Steam store page. | Whether the host can send the invitation through Steam. |
| Can the host handle capture? | CPU, GPU, game resolution, and background workload. | Whether to lower graphics settings before inviting guests. |
| What will guests use? | Another PC, Steam Link, or a mobile Steam Link client. | Whether hardware H.264 decoding and a suitable controller are available. |
| Is the network wired? | Ethernet or Wi-Fi for the host and receiving device. | How aggressively to tune quality and how much variability to expect. |
Run a short test with every participant before beginning a competitive round or a long cooperative mission. Confirm that everyone can see the stream, that each controller maps to the intended player, and that the host’s connection remains stable when all guests are present.
What guests do and do not need
- They do need: access to Steam or a supported Steam Link client, an invitation from the host, a compatible input device when the game requires one, and a connection capable of receiving the stream.
- They do not need: their own purchase or installation of the game for that Remote Play Together session.
- The host still needs: ownership, installation, a running copy of the game, and enough CPU, GPU, and network capacity to render and stream it.
Because the host runs the game, installing a title on a guest device will not fix a host-side performance problem. Conversely, upgrading the host will not correct a guest controller that Steam cannot detect or a congested connection at the guest’s location.

Remote Play gives invited participants access to the running game session, not unrestricted control of the host computer. Use the Remote Play panel to decide whether guests may share the keyboard and mouse. Restrict those devices when they are unnecessary, particularly in games where an accidental desktop shortcut could interrupt play. Give access only to people you invited, and end the session from the Overlay when the group is finished.
Quick Recap
Key limitations to remember
- Remote Play Together supports compatible local multiplayer formats; it does not convert every single-player or ordinary online game into co-op.
- The host’s Steam account supplies the game license and installation.
- Game-specific join prompts and controller rules still apply.
- VR is not supported, and non-Steam streaming is not officially supported.
- Quality depends on the complete host-to-guest path. Valve publishes recommendations, but no universal latency or success rate applies to all hardware, regions, or connections.
