Turn on the iPhone 17, connect it to the internet, sign in with your Apple Account, and choose a transfer method before changing optional preferences. If you are moving from another iPhone or iPad, Quick Start can copy apps, settings, and content. If you are coming from Android, use Move to iOS during the initial setup. After setup, review software updates, battery, privacy, Focus, accessibility, camera, and the iPhone 17’s Action button and Camera Control. Menu names and available features can differ by iOS version, model, country or region, and language.
Before you turn on the iPhone 17
Have these items ready before starting:
- Internet access: Use a reliable Wi-Fi network when possible. Cellular service may also provide the connection, depending on your plan and location.
- Apple Account details: You may need the email address, password, and verification method for your Apple Account.
- Your previous device or a backup: Keep the old iPhone or iPad nearby for Quick Start. If it is unavailable, make sure an iCloud or computer backup exists before you begin.
- Charging power: Keep the new and old phones connected to power during a large transfer. Apple says the time varies with network conditions and the amount of data.
- Android users: Keep the Android phone charged and ready to install or open Move to iOS. That migration route belongs in the iPhone’s first-run setup.
The exact screens can change with the installed iOS release. Apple’s setup basics guide and turn-on and setup guide describe the current iOS 26 flow, but your region, language, carrier, and iPhone configuration can alter the order or wording.
Start the iPhone 17 setup
- Press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
- Choose your language and country or region when prompted.
- Connect to Wi-Fi, or use cellular internet if that option is offered and appropriate for your plan.
- Read the prompts about data and privacy, then continue.
- Set up Face ID when prompted. You can normally set it up immediately or choose to do it later in Settings.
- Create a device passcode. Use a code you can remember but that other people cannot easily guess.
- Sign in with your Apple Account, or create one if you do not have one. Account verification may require a trusted phone number or another Apple device.
- Follow the prompts for cellular service. SIM and eSIM choices vary by country, carrier, and model.
Do not rush past the transfer screen if you still need to move data. The choice you make there determines whether the old device remains usable and when your apps and files appear.
Choose how to move your data

Apple’s Quick Start instructions confirm that transfer duration is not a fixed promise. A fast network and a small amount of data may finish sooner than a large photo or video library on a congested connection.

Transfer from an iPhone or iPad with Quick Start
- On the old device, turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and unlock it.
- Place the old device next to the powered-on iPhone 17.
- When the Quick Start card appears, verify the Apple Account shown and tap the option to continue.
- Use the old device to scan the animation on the iPhone 17, then enter the old device’s passcode on the new phone when asked.
- Set up Face ID and review the transfer choices.
- Choose Transfer from iPhone for a direct copy, or choose the iCloud option if you want apps and data to download in the background.
- Leave both devices near each other and connected to power until the transfer or initial restoration is complete.
A direct transfer keeps the two devices occupied until it finishes. An iCloud download can let you start using the iPhone while apps and other content continue arriving, but it depends on your internet connection and the amount of data still to download. Neither option is universally fastest.
Move from Android with Move to iOS
- Begin the iPhone 17 setup and continue until the screen offering to transfer apps and data appears.
- Select the Android-transfer option.
- On the Android phone, open Move to iOS and follow its instructions.
- Enter the temporary code shown by the iPhone, connect the devices as instructed, and select the content you want to move.
- Leave both phones alone until the progress indicator on the iPhone finishes, then complete the remaining setup screens.
Move to iOS is intended for the initial setup stage. If you already completed setup, Apple says you must either erase the iPhone and begin again or transfer content manually. Erasing removes content added since setup, so confirm that anything important is backed up and understand the consequences before choosing that route. Restore a backup instead
If the old phone is unavailable, select the restore-from-backup choice during setup. Choose the correct iCloud or computer backup, enter any requested Apple Account credentials, and keep the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi and power while the restoration runs. A backup can restore settings and supported data, but some content may continue downloading after you reach the Home Screen.

Complete the first-day setup safely
Install the latest available iOS update
After reaching the Home Screen, open Settings > General > Software Update. Install an offered update when you have enough battery or are connected to power. Updates can change labels and add or remove options, so checking this before detailed customization prevents you from following an outdated path.
Check cellular service and accounts
Open Settings and review the cellular section to confirm that the intended line is active. If your carrier uses eSIM, the activation steps may be completed during setup or supplied by the carrier. Physical SIM availability and transfer behavior vary by model and region. Test a call, text message, and mobile data connection before disposing of or resetting the old phone.

Confirm your important data
- Open Photos and check that recent pictures and videos are present or visibly queued for download.
- Open Contacts, Messages, Mail, Calendar, and any authentication app you rely on.
- Launch several essential apps so they can finish downloading and request any required sign-in.
- Check Wallet if you use payment cards or transit passes; financial institutions may require verification again.
Essential settings worth reviewing
There is no single correct configuration for every owner. Apple’s settings index is a useful map of the available controls. Use the following areas as a review list rather than a demand to change everything.
Battery
Open Settings > Battery to inspect usage by app, charging information, and available battery options. If one app accounts for an unexpectedly large share, check whether it is performing a long upload, location task, or background download before deleting it. Battery behavior during the first day can look unusual while photos, apps, and messages finish indexing and restoring.

Privacy and security
In Settings > Privacy & Security, review permissions for location, camera, microphone, photos, contacts, Bluetooth, and tracking. Grant access when an app’s function genuinely requires it; choose a more limited option when it does not. Also check the account and device-security recommendations shown in Settings, and keep Face ID and the passcode enabled unless you have a specific reason not to.
Focus
Open Settings > Focus to create or adjust modes such as Work, Sleep, Driving, or a personal mode. Decide which people and apps can notify you, whether a mode follows a schedule or location, and whether it changes the Lock Screen. Start with one mode that solves a real interruption problem instead of silencing every notification and later missing important messages.
Accessibility
Open Settings > Accessibility and review the categories that match your needs. Options include larger text, display and motion adjustments, spoken content, hearing features, touch controls, and Assistive Access-related tools. Settings such as text size and contrast can be changed without committing to a complete accessibility profile.

Camera
Open Settings > Camera to review formats, composition aids, preservation of settings, and other camera behavior. The useful choice depends on whether you prioritize maximum editing flexibility, storage efficiency, quick capture, or consistent results. Keep the default until you know which problem a change is meant to solve.

Settings also includes direct controls for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, appearance, cellular connections, and Wallet & Apple Pay. Review saved networks and paired accessories, choose light or dark appearance or an automatic schedule, and add payment cards only after confirming the iPhone is secured with your passcode and Face ID.
Customize the iPhone 17 Action button
The iPhone 17 includes an Action button. Apple says you can choose the function performed when you press it. Open Settings > Action Button, then swipe through the available actions and follow the on-screen instructions for the one you select. Apple’s current guide is available at Use and customize the Action button on iPhone.
Depending on the device, software, language, and region, the list can include:
- Silent Mode
- Focus
- Camera
- Visual Intelligence on supported configurations
- Flashlight
- Voice Memo
- Recognize Music
- Translate
- Magnifier
- Controls
- Shortcut
- Accessibility
- No Action
Controls, Shortcut, and Accessibility are categories rather than complete actions by themselves. After selecting one, choose the specific control, shortcut, or accessibility feature that should run. If an item is missing, check for an iOS update and confirm that the feature is supported in your configuration.

Understand Camera Control and Visual Intelligence
The iPhone 17 model documentation lists Camera Control alongside the Action button. Camera Control provides a physical way to open and operate camera-related functions, but the exact gestures and available controls follow the installed iOS version.
Visual Intelligence is more conditional. Apple’s Visual Intelligence guide describes Camera Control access on supported models and alternate access methods on some other models. Eligibility can depend on Apple Intelligence support, software version, language, and region. Do not treat Visual Intelligence as universal: check Apple’s current availability information and the options shown on your own iPhone before relying on it.
Personalize the Lock Screen and Home Screen
Lock Screen
Touch and hold the Lock Screen, tap Customize or the add button, and choose a wallpaper, clock style, color, and widgets. You can create more than one Lock Screen and associate one with a Focus mode. Keep glanceable information limited to what you actually need; each additional widget can make urgent notifications harder to spot.
Home Screen
Touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen until the icons jiggle. Add widgets, rearrange apps, create folders, or remove an app from the Home Screen without deleting it from the iPhone. Use the App Library when you want fewer pages, and keep frequently used actions on the first page for faster access.
Text size and display
For system-wide text changes, open Settings > Display & Brightness > Text Size. For larger accessibility text and per-app controls, use the relevant options in Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size. The available controls can vary with the app and iOS release.

Ringtones and alert sounds
Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics to choose ringtones, text tones, alert volume, and vibration behavior. Test the result with the iPhone in the way you normally carry it; a setting that is audible at a desk may be easy to miss in a pocket or bag.
Apple’s iPhone User Guide for iOS 26 covers Lock Screen and Home Screen personalization, widgets, text size, and sounds. These choices are optional and can be changed later without repeating the setup process.
First-day troubleshooting
Quick Start does not appear
- Confirm the old device is unlocked and has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled.
- Move both devices closer together and connect them to power.
- Restart both devices if the prompt still does not appear.
- If the old device is running an older iOS release, update it when practical and try again.
The transfer seems stuck
Do not judge progress by a universal time estimate. Apple says network conditions and data volume affect duration. Keep the devices together and powered, and avoid switching off Wi-Fi. A large photo or video library can take substantially longer than contacts and settings alone.

Move to iOS is tied to initial setup. If the iPhone is already configured, decide whether erasing it is acceptable after protecting any new data; otherwise use manual transfer methods for contacts, photos, files, mail, and individual apps.
An expected setting is missing
Check Settings > General > Software Update, then consider model, region, language, carrier, and Apple Account eligibility. Features such as Visual Intelligence can have additional Apple Intelligence requirements. Apple’s settings index and model guide are better references than assuming every iPhone displays identical menus.
