A pocket AI agent works best when its long-term memory is a short, reviewable list of facts you deliberately keep—not a copy of every chat, recording, or transcript. Set a rule that information becomes durable only when you explicitly ask the agent to remember it or approve it during review. Keep temporary plans and one-off events in the current conversation or a short-lived note, then give yourself a visible way to inspect, correct, and delete saved items. Finally, decide whether hosted or on-device processing fits the sensitivity of your data; “local” processing can still involve network traffic for model downloads, updates, or analytics.
What should a pocket AI agent remember?
Store durable information that will remain useful across many future conversations: stable preferences, continuing constraints, recurring routines, and long-term goals. Do not promote every fact encountered in a conversation to permanent memory.
| Keep as durable memory | Keep temporary or discard | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Preferred writing or response style | A one-time request for a different tone | A stable preference can improve future chats; a one-off instruction expires. |
| Dietary restrictions or accessibility needs | Tonight’s meal choice | A recurring constraint matters later; a single event usually does not. |
| An ongoing project goal or standing deadline rule | A task completed this week | Goals persist until changed, while completed tasks become stale. |
| Regular routines, such as a weekly planning habit | A temporary travel itinerary | Routines recur; itineraries should expire or stay in a dated note. |
| A background detail you have approved for future context | Raw transcripts, recordings, and ordinary chat history | A compact fact is easier to review and safer to carry forward than a source archive. |
These categories reflect the distinction described in Pi’s memory guidance, which presents lasting information and fleeting events as different kinds of context. That design is an example, not a behavior you can assume from every assistant. Your own rule should be explicit and conservative.

How do I define a memory rule before using the agent?
Write the policy in plain language and give it to the agent as an operating instruction. The policy should say what qualifies, require confirmation, and define an expiry path for information that may change.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Require an explicit trigger. Tell the agent to save information only after you say “Remember…” or approve a proposed memory. Do not let an inferred preference become permanent merely because it appeared several times.
- Limit the categories. Start with communication preferences, dietary or accessibility constraints, ongoing goals, and recurring routines. Add a category only when you can explain why it will remain useful.
- Store a compact fact, not a transcript. A memory should state the durable point in one sentence, without the surrounding conversation, speculation, or sensitive details that are not needed.
- Attach a review cue. For facts that can change—such as a project deadline or a medication-related preference—ask the agent to flag them for periodic confirmation rather than treating them as permanent.
- Define prohibited material. Exclude passwords, authentication codes, financial account numbers, private keys, raw meeting recordings, and unreviewed personal details unless you have a separate, appropriate system for them.
A useful instruction is: “Keep a small memory list. Save only facts I explicitly mark with ‘Remember’ or approve after you show them to me. Keep temporary plans, one-time events, transcripts, and recordings out of durable memory. When a saved fact may be outdated, ask me to confirm it.” This tells the agent how to behave, but it does not replace an interface for checking whether it actually followed the rule.
How do I separate recordings, transcripts, and notes from durable memory?
Use a promotion workflow: capture first, summarize second, approve a compact fact third. A recording or transcript is a source record; it is not automatically a memory entry.
1. Capture only when there is a reason
If you use a phone-mounted recorder, begin with a defined purpose such as documenting a meeting or collecting voice notes. Obtain any consent required in your location and from other participants before recording. Avoid recording ambient conversations merely because the device can do so.
2. Keep the source separate
Retain the audio or transcript in its capture area with a date, subject, and retention period. Do not place the entire source in the agent’s always-available memory. A dated source lets you verify a summary without making every sentence part of future context.
3. Generate a bounded summary
Ask for decisions, action items, and candidate long-term preferences in separate sections. Instruct the agent to label uncertain statements and omit sensitive material that is not needed for the task.
4. Approve memory candidates
Review each candidate. Edit it into a short, factual statement, reject anything temporary, and explicitly approve only the items that should survive future chats.

5. Apply retention and deletion
Delete or archive the source when its business or personal purpose ends. A compact memory may still need its own review date; deleting the recording does not automatically remove a fact already promoted to memory.
Pocket’s product and documentation describe a workflow with physical recording, app synchronization, summaries, action items, searchable saved material, tags, integrations, and access from iOS, Android, and the web. They also describe Bluetooth pairing and synchronization over Wi-Fi or USB-C, plus API and MCP integration. Those capabilities support capture and retrieval, but the documentation does not establish that the recorder automatically enforces the selective-memory policy above; you must apply the promotion and deletion decisions yourself.
How do I add, inspect, edit, and delete memories?
Make memory management a normal part of using the agent, not an emergency repair. Pi documents explicit “Remember…” requests and a management screen at Settings > Account > Manage Memories; other assistants may use different labels or provide no equivalent control.
Add
State the fact and the action in one sentence, such as: “Remember that I prefer concise bullet points for technical instructions.” Ask the agent to repeat the exact text it will store. If the interface cannot show the proposed entry, save only information you are comfortable trusting without that preview.
Inspect
Open the memory-management screen regularly and look for duplicates, vague wording, and details that are more sensitive than necessary. Check whether an item is labeled with its date, source, or last-confirmed time; if those fields are absent, keep your own review note.

Delete
Remove memories that are stale, unnecessary, or inappropriate to retain. Also delete the source recording or transcript when your retention period ends. Verify after deletion by reopening the list or asking a neutral test question; a chat transcript, backup, or third-party integration may have a separate deletion process.
Should I use a hosted assistant or an on-device model?
Choose hosted processing for convenience when the service offers clear memory controls and acceptable data terms. Choose on-device processing when reducing exposure of conversation content is more important than maximum model capability, and verify exactly what remains on the phone and what still leaves it.
| Option | What it can support | Main trade-off | What the available evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hosted assistant with explicit memory controls | Convenient cross-chat recall and a managed memory list | The provider stores or processes some memory; account and service dependence remain | Pi documents one example of explicit memory requests and management. It should not be generalized to every hosted assistant. |
| On-device language-model app | Prompt and response processing on a supported phone | RAM, storage, heat, model quality, and app-specific network traffic can limit the experience | The cited iPhone app disclosure says conversations are processed locally while listing network requests for model metadata or downloads, updates, and performance analytics. |
| Dedicated recorder plus assistant | Hands-free capture, synchronization, summaries, action items, and search | Audio may be synchronized and cloud-processed; recording creates consent obligations | Pocket’s product and trust materials describe this vendor’s workflow and infrastructure claims. They do not prove selective durable memory by themselves. |
| Self-hosted phone agent | Potentially local execution and user-controlled infrastructure | You own setup, updates, authentication, backups, and security | OpenPocket describes a local phone-use agent framework with permission isolation, not a verified, polished selective-memory product. A Pi Pocket project describes a self-hosted mobile interface and Android Termux instructions, not a consumer personal-memory solution. |
Compare any candidate on five questions: Can you list and delete memories? Is a recording kept separately from a memory entry? Which data is processed locally, and which is uploaded? What phone resources are required? What account, sync service, or model-download dependency remains if you lose connectivity?

“Local” should describe a specific data flow, not the entire application. An app can run inference on the phone while contacting servers for other functions.
- Conversation path: determine whether prompts, responses, and memory entries are sent to a server or processed entirely on the device.
- Model path: check whether model files are downloaded, where they come from, and whether updates require a connection.
- Telemetry path: look for crash reports, performance measurements, diagnostics, or analytics and whether they can be disabled.
- Account and sync path: identify whether sign-in, backups, cross-device history, or integrations copy data elsewhere.
Pocket AI Lab’s iPhone disclosure is a concrete example: it says conversations stay on the iPhone while identifying network requests for public model files, app updates, and performance measurements. That is materially different from claiming that the app makes no network connections. Treat app privacy pages as vendor disclosures, not independent security audits.
What phone resources do on-device agents need?
On-device models consume three scarce resources: memory, storage, and thermal headroom. A model may fit on paper yet run slowly, unload between chats, or trigger heat-related throttling during sustained use.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- RAM: the model, operating system, and other open apps compete for working memory. Insufficient RAM can cause crashes, swapping, or frequent model reloads.
- Storage: model files, quantized variants, tokenizer data, updates, and cached conversations occupy space. Leave room for the operating system and future downloads.
- Thermals and battery: prolonged inference can increase heat and power use. Performance may decline after several minutes even when a short test seems acceptable.
- Compatibility: supported chip architectures, operating-system versions, and app requirements differ. No particular phone model is established as a universal recommendation here.
Before committing, check the app’s current requirements for your exact phone, download the intended model, and test a realistic session that includes your memory workflow. Measure whether responses remain usable while the phone is warm and whether other essential apps continue to work.

Follow this sequence on the assistant, recorder, or local app you choose. The order prevents a capture tool from silently becoming an unrestricted memory store.
- Choose the data boundary. Write down what may become durable memory and what must remain temporary. Include a rule for sensitive data and a default expiry for changing facts.
- Configure explicit approval. Add an instruction requiring the agent to save only an explicitly marked or confirmed item, then show the proposed wording before saving.
- Create a review location. Find the product’s memory-management screen or document the exact command used to list memories. If no inspect-and-delete control exists, do not rely on that product for important personal memory.
- Run a harmless test. Ask the agent to remember a temporary test preference, verify that it appears in the list, edit it, and delete it. Confirm that a new chat no longer uses it.
- Connect capture tools selectively. If using a recorder, pair it according to the current documentation, choose Wi-Fi or USB-C synchronization deliberately, and set a retention period for recordings and transcripts.
- Promote approved facts only. After each summary, select a few durable facts, rewrite them compactly, and approve them. Leave action items and dated notes in their source system.
- Review on a schedule. At least monthly—or after a major change—inspect for stale, duplicated, or overly sensitive entries. Confirm facts that affect health, accessibility, finances, or safety before relying on them.
- Test the privacy path. Read the app’s processing, retention, deletion, sync, and sharing terms. Check analytics controls and what happens when the phone is offline or the account is disconnected.
What can go wrong, and how do I fix it?
The agent remembers too much
Delete broad entries, tighten the explicit-approval instruction, and stop automatic transcript-to-memory actions if the product offers them. Re-test with a one-time event and verify that it stays out of the durable list.
The agent forgets a detail you approved
Check whether the item was saved to a conversation note rather than durable memory, whether synchronization completed, and whether the local model has a context limit. Re-enter a concise statement and verify its presence in the management screen.
A saved fact is wrong or outdated
Edit the existing entry instead of adding a contradictory one. Add a confirmation date or wording such as “ask before assuming” when the fact changes frequently.
Local mode still shows network activity
Separate conversation traffic from model downloads, updates, analytics, and account services. Review the app disclosure and operating-system network controls; do not infer that all traffic contains your prompts merely because servers are contacted.

The phone becomes hot or slow
Use a smaller or more compressed model if supported, close competing apps, shorten prompts, and test again after the device cools. If sustained performance remains unacceptable, a hosted model may be the more practical choice for non-sensitive work.
A recording contains someone who did not agree
Stop sharing or syncing it, follow applicable consent requirements, and delete the recording and derived transcript where permitted. Do not promote any related personal detail to durable memory.
How should I evaluate privacy and storage claims?
Ask for specifics rather than accepting labels such as “private,” “encrypted,” or “offline.” You need to know where recordings, transcripts, summaries, memories, backups, and analytics are processed; how long each is retained; who can access them; and how deletion propagates to synchronized copies and integrations.

Pocket’s trust materials state that data is encrypted at rest and in transit, that users can keep recordings on-device or synchronize them, and that transcription and summarization use US-based cloud infrastructure. These are the vendor’s statements, not an independent audit. They matter because a device can capture audio locally while later sending it to cloud services for transcription or summarization.
For sensitive conversations, obtain participant consent, minimize what you record, disable optional analytics where possible, and avoid connecting integrations that copy data into systems you do not control. Keep durable memory shorter and less revealing than the source material it came from.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a pocket AI agent remember something without storing the whole conversation?
Yes, if the product supports a separate memory record or you maintain one yourself. Save a concise, approved fact and keep the transcript in a dated note with its own retention rule; the two stores may require separate deletion.
How often should I review an AI agent’s memories?
Review at least monthly and whenever a major personal, work, health, or travel circumstance changes. Facts that can change quickly should carry a confirmation date or an instruction to ask before relying on them.
Does offline recording mean my audio never reaches a server?
Not necessarily. A recorder may capture without a connection and upload later for synchronization, transcription, or summaries. Check the product’s storage and processing terms and the sync settings before recording sensitive material.
What should I do if my phone cannot run the chosen local model?
Check the app’s current RAM, storage, operating-system, and chip requirements, then test a smaller model if one is supported. If the device still overheats or reloads the model, use hosted processing for low-risk tasks or choose a newer compatible device rather than weakening your memory controls.
