The safest first-print setup for a Bambu Lab printer is straightforward: remove every model-specific transport restraint, connect the printer to your network and Bambu account, finish the prompted calibration, load the supplied Bambu PLA or PLA Basic, and print a pre-loaded test model. Stay beside the machine for the first layer. If extrusion curls, drags an earlier line, or fails to adhere, pause immediately and correct the plate or filament before continuing.
The exact menus and file-transfer method vary between A1/A1 mini, P1P/P1S, X1, and newer families, so use the manual for your exact model when a screen label differs. The procedure below covers the common workflow and calls out the differences that can affect a first print.
What should I prepare before unboxing the printer?
Choose a stable, level surface with enough clearance to open the printer, remove the build plate, and route filament. Keep the original packaging nearby until the machine has completed its first successful print in case a transport part or accessory has to be identified.
Recommended Free Tools
- Confirm the exact model name (A1, A1 mini, P1P, P1S, an X1-family printer, or a newer family) before following a setup video or manual.
- Have a reliable Wi-Fi network available if you plan to use Bambu Handy or Bambu Studio.
- Keep the supplied build plate, spool holder or AMS, power cable, and starter filament together.
- Use the supplied Bambu PLA or PLA Basic for the first test rather than introducing a new material or a custom profile.
- Make sure the printer can remain undisturbed for the calibration and first-layer check.
Do not power on until all foam, tape, clips, and other transport restraints identified for your model have been removed, except for any restraint the manual explicitly says to leave in place temporarily. The P1S is the important example: its quick-start guide says, “DO NOT remove the protective foam from beneath the hot bed until after the initial calibration is complete.” Follow that instruction for a P1S instead of applying a generic unboxing rule.

How do I unbox and physically assemble a Bambu Lab printer?
Unboxing is model-specific, but the order is consistent: free the moving parts, install the printing hardware, and only then connect power.
Remove packaging and transport locks
Take off the outer film, tape, foam blocks, gantry restraints, and any screws or clips listed for your model. Check around the bed, toolhead, doors, and frame; a restraint left in place can obstruct motion or make calibration fail. Keep the parts you remove until you are certain the printer is operating normally.
Install the build plate and filament hardware
Seat the supplied build plate in the orientation shown by the manual. Install the spool holder for a direct-feed setup, or mount and connect the AMS if your package includes one. The plate must sit flat and cleanly against its locating surface; a partially seated plate can produce an apparent adhesion or leveling problem.

Place and power the printer
Put the printer on a rigid, level surface, connect the power cable, and leave room for the bed and doors to move. Power on only after the mechanical inspection is complete. At this stage you do not need to modify slicer settings or perform manual tuning.
How do I connect the printer and bind it to Bambu software?
Use the connection path shown by your model’s screen. The goal is to place the printer and Bambu Studio on the same Bambu account so jobs and device status are associated correctly.
P1P and P1S: scan the Bambu Handy QR code
The P1P/P1S workflow uses Bambu Handy to scan the QR code displayed by the printer for account binding. Install or open Bambu Handy, sign in to the account you intend to use, scan the printer’s code, and complete the Wi-Fi prompts. Then sign in to Bambu Studio with that same account; using different accounts can make the printer appear unavailable in the desktop software.
Touchscreen families: configure Wi-Fi on the printer
Printers with a touchscreen generally let you select language and configure Wi-Fi directly on the printer. Enter the network credentials shown on screen, wait for the connection confirmation, and then select the same account in Bambu Studio. Menu wording can change with firmware, so follow the current on-screen labels for the exact model.

Verify the binding before sending a job
Before slicing, confirm that Bambu Studio lists the correct printer model and that the device is online. If it is offline, recheck the Wi-Fi network and account rather than repeatedly sending a file; a successful local connection is a prerequisite for a predictable first print.
How do I run the initial calibration?
Run every calibration sequence the printer prompts for before starting a print. This establishes the machine’s initial motion and bed-related measurements; skipping it removes the baseline the first test is meant to verify.
- Start the guided calibration from the printer’s setup prompt.
- Keep the build area clear and leave the doors, panels, and bed in the state specified by the on-screen instructions.
- Allow the complete routine to finish, even if the printer vibrates or makes unfamiliar sounds.
- For a P1S, leave the protective foam beneath the hot bed in place until the initial calibration has completed, exactly as its quick-start guide directs; remove it afterward if the guide tells you to.
- Do not interrupt power during the routine. If the printer reports an error, note the message and return to the model-specific manual before trying again.
Vibration and noise during the P1S calibration are described as normal in its guide. The X1 family adds a dedicated print-calibration path and additional Micro Lidar calibration, so an X1 owner should complete those extra prompts rather than assuming the P1/P1S sequence is identical.
Which filament should I use for the first print?
Use the supplied Bambu PLA or PLA Basic. The P1S quick-start material explicitly recommends supplied Bambu PLA for the first test, and its pre-loaded files are intended for PLA Basic or PLA Matte. Starting with that known material removes a major variable while you verify assembly, calibration, and first-layer adhesion.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDirect-feed loading
- Cut the filament tip at a clean angle so it is not bent or mushroomed.
- Choose the load-filament command on the printer.
- Push the filament through the specified path when prompted, keeping it aligned with the guide tube.
- Wait for the printer to detect and extrude it before starting the test file.
AMS loading
- Place the spool in an AMS slot and ensure it can rotate freely.
- Select the slot and load command on the printer.
- Let the AMS feed the filament automatically; do not force the spool while its motor is pulling.
- Confirm that the printer reports the expected material before launching the test.
For a first print, avoid changing material, nozzle, or profile at the same time. If you later use another filament, remember that results depend on the material’s dry or wet state, the model, and ambient temperature.
What should I print first on a Bambu Lab printer?
Print a pre-loaded model or an included test file. Bambu’s quick-start material recommends a supplied test and says pre-loaded files can be printed with PLA Basic or PLA Matte. A pre-loaded file minimizes slicing and profile variables, making it easier to determine whether the physical setup is correct.
- Choose a test model stored on the printer or supplied with it.
- Confirm that the selected filament matches the file’s stated material, preferably supplied PLA or PLA Basic.
- Check that the build plate is installed in the orientation shown by the printer.
- Start the job from the printer screen or send it from Bambu Studio after verifying the target device.
- Stay nearby through the first layer and the opening minutes of extrusion.
Do not use a large, complex, high-temperature, or multi-material project as the first test. Those jobs add more possible causes of failure before you have confirmed that the printer is assembled and calibrated correctly.

How do I judge the first layer, and when should I pause?
Watch the first layer rather than assuming that a successful start means the print is safe. Lines should lay down evenly and remain attached to the plate.
| What you see | What it usually means at this stage | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Filament curls up at the nozzle | The extrusion is not adhering to the plate. | Pause, inspect plate seating and cleanliness, and check that the filament is loading correctly before restarting. |
| A new line drags or lifts an earlier line | Adhesion or extrusion is unstable. | Pause immediately; do not allow the nozzle to build a blob over loose plastic. |
| Lines are even and remain attached | The initial layer is behaving as expected. | Continue watching until the opening section is stable. |
| No extrusion appears | The filament may not have reached the toolhead or the load cycle may not have completed. | Pause and repeat the model’s load-filament procedure rather than changing unrelated print settings. |
If a first-layer problem occurs, stop the job, let the printer return to a safe state, and correct the plate or filament issue before trying again. Restarting the same file without fixing the cause usually produces the same failure.
What changes between A1, P1, P1S, and X1 setup paths?
The basic sequence is shared, but enclosure, calibration, material, and storage differences affect the instructions you should follow.
| Family | Setup detail that changes the first print | Material or automation note | File storage noted for the family |
|---|---|---|---|
| A1 / A1 mini | Open-frame setup with touchscreen-style Wi-Fi configuration. | Bambu identifies PLA, PETG, TPU, and PVA as ideal materials. High-temperature materials can warp because the chamber is not heated; results also vary with filament dry/wet state, model, and ambient temperature. | Commonly uses included microSD test files. |
| P1P | Uses the Bambu Handy QR-code binding workflow and the prompted initial calibration. | Use the supplied PLA for the first test to reduce variables. | Commonly uses included microSD test files. |
| P1S | Uses Bambu Handy QR binding. Keep the protective foam beneath the hot bed until initial calibration is complete, as its quick-start guide states. | Use supplied Bambu PLA or PLA Basic for the first test. | Commonly uses included microSD test files. |
| X1 family | Complete the dedicated print-calibration path and additional Micro Lidar calibration. | Follow the X1-specific prompts rather than copying a P1/P1S routine. | Commonly uses included microSD test files. |
| P2S, X2D, H2 and other newer families | Verify the current manual because menus and delivery methods can differ from earlier families. | Use the material limits and prompts for the exact model. | The researched setup guidance identifies internal storage or USB rather than assuming a microSD workflow. |
For reference, Bambu’s 2025 A1 product documentation lists a 256 × 256 × 256 mm build volume and a 0.4 mm included stainless-steel nozzle. Those figures apply to the A1 documentation, not automatically to every printer in the range.
Do I need to calibrate a Bambu printer before every print?
You must complete the printer’s initial, prompted calibration before the first job. The setup evidence does not establish that a full initial routine is required before every later print; subsequent behavior depends on the model, firmware, and the maintenance or calibration options shown on that printer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For the first setup, do not substitute a manual slicer calibration cube for the printer’s own guided routine. On an X1, include the Micro Lidar calibration that appears in its workflow. If a later print shows a new first-layer or extrusion problem, use the model’s available calibration and troubleshooting prompts instead of assuming that the original setup remains valid under every condition.
Can an open-frame A1 or A1 mini print every material?
No. Bambu identifies PLA, PETG, TPU, and PVA as ideal materials for the A1 and A1 mini, while high-temperature materials can warp because these machines do not have a heated chamber. The outcome is also affected by whether the filament is dry or wet, the geometry of the model, and ambient temperature.

That is why PLA is the sensible first choice even when your eventual project needs another material. Once the printer has passed a PLA test, change one variable at a time and use the exact material guidance for the model. Do not interpret a successful PLA test as proof that an open-frame printer will handle every high-temperature filament.
How do I transfer test files when the printer uses different storage?
Storage depends on the family. A1, A1 mini, P1, and X1 printers commonly use included microSD test files, while newer P2S, X2D, and H2 families use internal storage or USB according to the setup guidance.

- If the model uses the supplied microSD workflow, insert the card as directed and select the included test file from the printer.
- If the model uses internal storage or USB, follow its on-screen import or file-selection path instead of inserting a microSD card.
- When sending from Bambu Studio, verify the destination printer and wait for the transfer confirmation before starting.
A 32 GB FAT32 microSD card is relevant only to models that support that storage path; do not assume it applies to newer families with internal storage or USB. Firmware menus and supported media can change, so the exact model manual is the authority.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are the most common first-print failures and fixes?
The printer will not complete calibration
Recheck that all model-specific transport restraints have been removed and that the printer is on a stable, level surface. For a P1S, verify the protective foam was handled according to the quick-start instruction rather than removed prematurely. Record any on-screen error and consult the exact model manual before repeating the sequence.
The filament never reaches the nozzle
For direct feed, recut the tip and repeat the guided load path. For AMS, check that the spool is seated in its slot and can rotate, then run the slot’s load command again. Confirm the printer recognizes the material before starting another file.
The first layer will not stick
Pause the print and inspect that the plate is correctly seated and free of an obvious contaminant. Check that the filament is feeding normally and that the selected profile matches the loaded PLA. Do not continue with a curling or dragging first layer.
The result is poor only with a different filament
Return to the supplied PLA test to separate printer setup from material behavior. Filament dry/wet state, model geometry, and ambient temperature can change outcomes, particularly on open-frame A1-family machines. Change one variable at a time and follow the material limits for your model.

The printer is not visible in Bambu Studio
Confirm that the printer is connected to Wi-Fi and that Bambu Studio uses the same Bambu account used during binding. P1P and P1S owners should repeat the Bambu Handy QR-code binding if necessary; touchscreen-family owners should recheck the Wi-Fi setup on the printer.
What is the shortest reliable first-print checklist?
- Identify the exact model and read its current quick-start instructions.
- Remove every required transport lock and packaging piece, observing the P1S foam exception.
- Install the build plate, spool holder or AMS, and power cable on a stable, level surface.
- Connect Wi-Fi and bind the printer using its model-specific path.
- Run the complete prompted calibration, including X1 Micro Lidar calibration where shown.
- Load supplied Bambu PLA or PLA Basic by direct feed or AMS.
- Choose a pre-loaded or included test model.
- Watch the first layer and pause at the first sign of curling, dragging, or failed adhesion.
This sequence keeps the first job diagnostic: it tests the physical assembly, connection, calibration, filament path, and plate adhesion without adding unnecessary slicer or material variables.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a different brand of PLA for the first test?
The documented quick-start recommendation is the supplied Bambu PLA or PLA Basic because it reduces unknowns. A different filament may work, but the setup guidance does not establish identical results across brands; use the supplied material first if you want the clearest diagnosis of the printer itself.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why does my printer make loud vibrations during setup?
Some vibration and noise during the P1S initial calibration are described as normal. Stop only if the printer reports an error, a part is visibly obstructed, or the behavior differs from the model’s instructions; otherwise let the guided routine finish.
Is an AMS required to make the first print?
No. A direct-feed spool-holder setup is sufficient for a first PLA test. AMS loading is an alternative in which the system feeds a spool from a selected slot.
What should I do if my model has no included test file?
Use a simple pre-loaded model if one is available through the printer or Bambu Studio, and keep the supplied PLA and standard profile. If no test file is available, choose a small, low-complexity PLA object rather than a large or high-temperature project, then apply the same first-layer check.
