Google Sheets does not have Excel’s Page Layout → Print Area → Set Print Area command. Instead, you define the area when you print by selecting the cells and choosing Selected cells in the print settings.

This is a computer/web workflow. The key detail is that selecting cells alone is not enough: Google Sheets may still open the print screen with Current sheet selected, which would print the entire tab.

How to set a print area in Google Sheets

  1. Open the spreadsheet at sheets.google.com on a computer.
  2. Select the cells you want to print. For example, select A1:H35 by dragging across the range, or click the name box above the grid and enter the range.
  3. Click File → Print.
  4. In the print-settings screen, open the print-scope dropdown. It may initially say Current sheet.
  5. Choose Selected cells.
  6. Check the preview, then click Next.

The selected range is now the content sent to the print process. In Chrome, a print window opens; click Print. In Firefox or Safari, Google Sheets downloads a PDF, which you can open and print using File → Print in the PDF viewer.

What the print-scope options mean

Option What it prints
Workbook Every tab in the spreadsheet.
Current sheet The tab that was active before you opened the print screen.
Selected cells Only the range selected before opening the print screen.

If you selected a range but the preview contains the whole tab, return to the print-scope dropdown and change Current sheet to Selected cells.

Print one complete sheet tab

To print an entire tab rather than a selected range:

  1. Click the tab you want to print.
  2. Click File → Print.
  3. Set the print scope to Current sheet.
  4. Click Next, then complete printing in the browser or PDF viewer.

This prints the active sheet only, not every tab in the spreadsheet.

Print every tab in a spreadsheet

  1. Click File → Print.
  2. Choose Workbook from the print-scope dropdown.
  3. Click Next.

Use this option when the file contains several tabs that all need to be included.

Make a selected range fit the page

After choosing Selected cells, use the print settings to control how the range is laid out on paper or in the PDF.

Change orientation

Under Orientation, choose:

  • Portrait for a taller, narrower layout.
  • Landscape for tables with many columns.

Landscape is often the better choice for a range such as A1:N30, because it gives wide columns more room.

Choose paper size

Open Paper size and choose the required size. If the available sizes do not match the paper or document format, choose Custom size and enter the height and width.

Set page breaks for a multi-page printout

If the selected range spreads across several pages, you can decide where each page ends:

  1. Click File → Print.
  2. Click Set custom page breaks.
  3. Drag the page-break lines to reposition them. Each rectangle represents one printed page.
  4. To remove a break, point to its line and click Remove.
  5. Click Confirm breaks.

Use page breaks when a row would otherwise be split awkwardly or when a logical section should begin on a new page.

Repeat headings on every printed page

For a long table, repeat the heading row so later pages remain understandable:

  1. Freeze the heading row first. Use View → Freeze, then choose the appropriate number of rows.
  2. Open File → Print.
  3. Open Headers & footers.
  4. Select Repeat frozen rows.
  5. Click Confirm, if shown, and review the preview.

You can also freeze a column and select Repeat frozen columns when a left-side identifier needs to appear on every printed page.

Add headers and footers

In the print settings, open Headers & footers and select the information to include. To change the placement or formatting, choose Edit custom fields, make the changes, and click Confirm.

Does Google Sheets save a permanent print area?

Google’s current print workflow does not document a persistent print-area setting, a Set Print Area command, or a Clear Print Area command. The print scope is chosen in the print screen as Workbook, Current sheet, or Selected cells.

Therefore, if you need to print the same range again, select that range before opening File → Print, then explicitly choose Selected cells again. There is no standard formula, Apps Script command, or command-line syntax required for this normal workflow.

Common mistakes and fixes

Problem Fix
The whole tab appears in the preview. Change the print scope from Current sheet to Selected cells.
The wrong tab prints. Return to the sheet, click the correct tab, select the range again, and reopen File → Print.
The table is cut off horizontally. Choose Landscape, use a larger paper size, or reduce the margins.
Column headings appear only on the first page. Freeze the heading row, then enable Repeat frozen rows under Headers & footers.
The output has unexpected page divisions. Open Set custom page breaks and move or remove the break lines.
There is no browser print dialog after clicking Next. Check whether Google Sheets downloaded a PDF. In Firefox and Safari, print the downloaded PDF using the PDF viewer’s File → Print command.

Google Sheets versus Excel

Instructions that say Page Layout → Print Area → Set Print Area apply to Microsoft Excel, not Google Sheets. Excel supports a named, persistent print-area feature; Google Sheets’ documented method is to select cells and choose Selected cells when printing.

That distinction explains why searching Google Sheets for Clear Print Area or looking for a Page Layout tab does not produce the expected command.

The print screen may default to Current sheet. Selecting cells does not automatically change that option. Open the print-scope dropdown and choose Selected cells.

The Bottom Line

To print a defined area in Google Sheets, select the cells, go to File → Print, change the scope to Selected cells, and click Next. Google Sheets does not use Excel’s persistent Set Print Area feature, so make the selection again whenever you need to print that range.
