To set a different input method for each app window in Windows 11, enable Let me use a different input method for each app window at Settings → Time & language → Typing → Advanced keyboard settings. Then focus each window and choose its layout or IME with the taskbar indicator or Windows key + Spacebar. Windows can keep separate choices while those windows remain open, but the setting is not a guaranteed permanent per-app profile.

The procedure works for ordinary keyboard layouts such as US QWERTY, UK, French AZERTY, and Spanish, as well as input method editors (IMEs) such as Microsoft Japanese, Microsoft Pinyin, Microsoft Bopomofo, and Microsoft ChangJie. The required layouts or IMEs must be installed before they can be assigned.

Key takeaways

  • Windows 11’s per-window setting is at Settings → Time & language → Typing → Advanced keyboard settings.
  • The setting maintains different input-method choices for open app windows, rather than creating a permanent application-to-language rules table.
  • Each layout or IME must be installed through Settings → Time & language → Language & region → Language options → Add a keyboard.
  • Windows key + Spacebar cycles through installed input methods, while the taskbar input indicator shows the method currently active in the focused window.
  • Windows may require you to select the input method again after an application is closed and reopened, and some apps, games, remote sessions, elevated apps, or custom text controls may behave differently.

What is the difference between a keyboard layout, input language, IME, and display language?

A keyboard layout controls how physical keys produce characters. US QWERTY, UK QWERTY, French AZERTY, and Spanish layouts are examples. An input language associates a layout or language service with a language. An Input Method Editor (IME) supports more complex text entry, including Microsoft Japanese, Microsoft Pinyin, Microsoft Bopomofo, and Microsoft ChangJie.

A display language controls Windows menus, dialog boxes, and interface text. Changing a keyboard layout or IME does not change the Windows display language. Microsoft also states that a full language pack is not always required merely to add a keyboard layout; the layout may be available through an installed language or language option. See Microsoft’s keyboard-layout and language-settings documentation for the supported distinction.

How do you install another keyboard layout or IME?

Install every layout or IME you want to use before enabling per-window switching. Windows cannot select an input method that is not installed.

  1. Open Start → Settings.
  2. Select Time & language → Language & region.
  3. Under Language, find the language associated with the layout or IME.
  4. Select the language’s three-dot menu, then choose Language options.
  5. Under Keyboards, select Add a keyboard.
  6. Choose the required keyboard layout or IME.

If the desired keyboard does not appear, add or select the language associated with that keyboard first. Microsoft notes that a layout can sometimes be listed under a different installed language than you expect, so check the keyboard lists for your installed languages rather than assuming the layout is unavailable. The same Microsoft keyboard-layout instructions cover this installation process.

How do you enable a different input method for each app window?

Windows 11 enables the feature through Advanced keyboard settings:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Time & language.
  3. Select Typing.
  4. Select Advanced keyboard settings.
  5. Under Switching input methods, enable Let me use a different input method for each app window.

Some Windows builds, older instructions, or localized editions use slightly different wording, such as Let me set a different input method for each app window. The wording variation refers to the same per-window behavior. Microsoft’s Windows 11 discussion identifies the setting in Advanced keyboard settings.

How do you assign an input method to each app window?

Enabling the checkbox does not open an application-assignment list. Windows creates the association when you focus a window and select an input method while that window has focus.

  1. Open the applications or documents you want to use.
  2. Click inside the first app window.
  3. Use the taskbar input-language indicator to select the desired layout or IME, or press Windows key + Spacebar to cycle through installed input methods.
  4. Click inside the second app window.
  5. Select the second window’s desired layout or IME using the taskbar indicator or Windows key + Spacebar.
  6. Repeat the process for every other open window.

The taskbar indicator represents the input method active in the currently focused window. The Windows key + Spacebar shortcut cycles through installed keyboard layouts and input methods, as documented by Microsoft in its Windows keyboard-switching guidance.

Example: English in one window and Japanese in another

Install a Latin layout and Microsoft Japanese first. Focus a Notepad window and select the Latin layout. Focus a second text editor window and select Microsoft Japanese. When you return to the first window, Windows should show the first window’s selected input method; when you return to the second window, Windows should show the second window’s selection while both windows remain open.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Japanese, Chinese, and other East Asian IMEs may also have conversion or sentence modes. Selecting an IME is not necessarily the same as changing every conversion mode inside that IME. Microsoft explains the distinction between input-method selection and IME input-context behavior in its IME compatibility documentation.

How can you test whether per-window input methods are working?

Test the feature with two separate top-level windows rather than two tabs in one application:

  1. Open Notepad and a second ordinary text editor or browser window.
  2. Focus Notepad and choose a Latin keyboard layout.
  3. Focus the second window and choose a different layout or IME.
  4. Press Alt + Tab to move between the windows.
  5. Watch the taskbar input indicator as focus changes.
  6. Type a short test string in each window to confirm the result.

The setting applies to app windows, so separate tabs inside one application may not receive independent input-method state. Testing with two ordinary, non-elevated desktop applications also helps identify whether a failure belongs to Windows’ general input handling or to a particular application.

What does the Windows per-window input setting not do?

The setting is not a permanent “application → input method” profile manager. It is intended to maintain distinct selections for open app windows, but Windows does not provide a documented, user-facing rules table for permanently assigning Japanese to one application, French to another, and English to a third.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Behavior What Windows can do Important limitation
Several open app windows Maintain different selected input methods while the windows are open You must focus each window and select its method initially
Application reopened later May start with a remembered or default method Some users must select the method again after reopening the application
Separate tabs in one app May share the application’s input state Tabs are not guaranteed to behave as independent app windows
IME conversion and sentence modes Provide additional East Asian text-entry behavior IME mode state is distinct from the broader input-method selection
Permanent application rules No documented native assignment table Persistent rules require application features or unverified third-party automation

Microsoft Community reports describe cases where users need to choose the keyboard language each time a program runs, and recent Windows 11 reports describe cases where the selected method is not retained correctly. The result can vary between traditional desktop applications, Windows apps, remote sessions, elevated applications, games, and programs with custom text-input systems. Treat per-window retention as useful session behavior, not a permanent guarantee. See the Microsoft reports about selecting a keyboard language after an application starts and recent per-window retention problems.

What should you do if the setting or input indicator is missing?

The per-window checkbox is missing

First confirm that you are using Settings → Time & language → Typing → Advanced keyboard settings, not an older Windows 10 instruction path. Then confirm that at least two layouts or IMEs are installed under Language & region → Language options → Keyboards. Searching Windows Settings for advanced keyboard settings can also locate the page when menu wording differs.

UI placement and wording can vary by Windows build, language, edition, and organization policy. If the desired input method is not installed, complete the installation steps before diagnosing the per-window option.

The taskbar input-language indicator is missing

The legacy desktop language bar can replace the taskbar input indicator. To restore the taskbar control, open Settings → Time & language → Typing → Advanced keyboard settings. Under Switching input methods, turn off Use the desktop language bar when it’s available. Microsoft documents this separate setting in its keyboard-layout troubleshooting guidance.

Every window keeps reverting to one language

Work through these checks in order:

  1. Verify that Let me use a different input method for each app window is enabled.
  2. Focus each window and explicitly select its input method again.
  3. Close and reopen the affected application to determine whether the problem is limited to application restarts.
  4. Toggle the per-window option off, restart Windows, and enable the option again.
  5. Review Override for default input method in Advanced keyboard settings.
  6. Remove duplicate or unwanted layouts so the input menu is easier to identify.
  7. Test with Notepad or another basic text application. If the basic test works but one program fails, investigate that program’s language or input settings.
  8. Install pending Windows and IME updates.
  9. If the problem started after an IME change, review Microsoft’s IME compatibility or rollback guidance.

Windows updates, IME updates, application restarts, and application-specific input handling can affect retention. Microsoft provides documentation for reverting to a previous IME version when a compatibility problem requires that option.

The wrong language appears after Alt + Tab

A wrong input method after Alt + Tab can result from selecting a method while another control had focus, an application failing to preserve its input context, the default input method overriding the expected selection, or a Windows or IME regression. Test two ordinary, non-elevated desktop applications first. If the behavior occurs only in one application, check that application’s own language settings and update history.

A shortcut changes the language unexpectedly

Windows key + Spacebar cycles through installed input methods, so an accidental key press can change the active method. Games and applications may also use overlapping shortcuts. Remove unnecessary layouts and inspect Windows language and keyboard shortcut settings if switching occurs unexpectedly.

Should you edit the registry to force a per-app input method?

No. Registry editing should not be the normal solution for this task. Microsoft Q&A discussions identify related preference data in HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktopUserPreferencesMask, but the value is a shared binary preference field, not a simple documented application-to-language database.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Replacing or modifying that binary value can affect unrelated Windows preferences and can create recovery problems if the value is edited incorrectly. Use the Settings interface first, and avoid registry instructions that provide an unexplained binary replacement. The registry location is discussed in Microsoft Q&A’s registry discussion, but that discussion does not turn the value into a safe per-application configuration method.

Which approach is best for your situation?

Approach Best for Benefit Trade-off
Windows per-window setting Several currently open windows need different layouts or IMEs Built into Windows and easy to reverse Not a guaranteed permanent app profile
Manual switching with Windows + Spacebar Occasional language changes or users who want one active method at a time Simple and requires no per-window setup You must switch manually whenever the typing context changes
Application-level language settings A specific office suite, development tool, browser, or remote-desktop client has its own language controls Can address behavior that Windows’ general setting does not control Available options differ by application
Third-party automation Users who need persistent rules such as one language every time a particular app launches May provide application-specific automation Compatibility, security, accessibility, and maintenance risks require evaluation

For occasional switching, manual Windows + Spacebar selection is enough. For several open windows, enable the native per-window setting. For permanent rules, check the application’s own settings first; consider third-party automation only when the native behavior is insufficient and the tool can be evaluated safely.

Does this apply to Windows 10?

The same general language and keyboard workflow existed in Windows 10, but Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. The instructions here are scoped primarily to Windows 11, where menu labels and placement can vary between builds. Microsoft’s keyboard-layout documentation covers both Windows language-setting workflows but does not change the Windows 10 support status.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Windows 11 permanently remember a different keyboard language for each application?

Windows 11 can maintain different input-method selections for separate open app windows, but the native setting is not a guaranteed permanent application profile. Some applications require the input method to be selected again after they are closed and reopened.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the shortcut to change the input method in Windows 11?

Press Windows key + Spacebar to cycle through installed keyboard layouts and IMEs. The taskbar input indicator also lets you select the active input method for the focused window.

Do I need to change the Windows display language to type in Japanese, Chinese, or French?

No. Installing the required keyboard layout or IME changes text input without changing the language used for Windows menus and interface elements. A full language pack is not always required to add a keyboard layout.

Why does the per-window input method work in Notepad but not in another application?

The application may manage text input differently, fail to preserve its input context, run with different privileges, or provide its own language settings. Test two ordinary, non-elevated desktop applications, then check the affected application’s settings and updates.

The Bottom Line

Enable Settings → Time & language → Typing → Advanced keyboard settings → Let me use a different input method for each app window, then focus each open window and choose its layout or IME with the taskbar indicator or Windows + Spacebar. The feature is useful for separate open windows, but it is not a dependable permanent per-application language assignment system.
