To loop local video files in a YouTube livestream, use OBS Studio’s VLC Video Source: add the files in playback order, enable Loop Playlist, then connect OBS to YouTube with the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. This repeats the playlist, but it does not guarantee an indefinitely live broadcast or automatic recovery if your computer or connection fails.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube account with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the process.
- OBS Studio and VLC installed on the computer that will run the stream. OBS’s VLC Video Source requires VLC; if OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
- Video files you have permission to stream, with enough local storage and a reliable internet connection for the intended broadcast.
Set up a looping playlist in OBS
- Enable YouTube live streaming. If this is your first time, enable the feature in your YouTube account and allow for the possible activation delay of up to 24 hours.
- Create or open a stream in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room and copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your channel. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe using these details in streaming software.
- Add the playlist source in OBS. In the scene you intend to broadcast, add a VLC Video Source. Add the local media files in the order you want them played.
- Enable looping. In the source’s playlist controls, turn on Loop Playlist. Enable shuffle only if you want the file order randomized rather than repeated in sequence.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS’s stream settings, choose the YouTube destination and enter the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. Keep the key private, especially if you share an OBS profile or computer.
- Start and verify the broadcast. Start streaming from OBS and watch the preview in YouTube Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s documented workflow is to wait for the preview and then click Go live.
What “continuous” means—and what it does not
OBS can repeat the files in its VLC playlist, but that setting controls media playback, not the health of the computer, OBS, or network connection. YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement is not a promise that a single broadcast can remain live indefinitely. Plan to monitor a long-running stream and check YouTube’s current guidance for your broadcast rather than treating playlist looping as a 24/7 uptime guarantee. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
The YouTube Live Streaming API distinguishes a broadcast from a stream and describes scenarios in which separate broadcasts use distinct stream resources. That API model explains the platform’s concepts; it does not provide an end-user playlist setup or prove indefinite operation. Google for Developers: Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.
OBS playlist versus a hardware encoder
| Approach | Local multi-file playlist and looping | What the documented setup requires | Recovery and reliability |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS with VLC Video Source | OBS documents a VLC source with a list of media files and a Loop Playlist control. | OBS, VLC, and a computer running the stream; connect using YouTube’s stream URL and key. | The cited setup documents playlist playback, not automatic restart, fault recovery, redundant power or network, or guaranteed uptime. |
| Hardware encoder | YouTube supports hardware encoders generally, but the cited guidance does not establish that a particular device can play and loop a local multi-file playlist unattended. | A hardware encoder and YouTube’s stream URL and key. Device-specific playlist steps are not established in the cited guidance. | Device-specific recovery behavior is not established in the cited guidance. |
For a straightforward local playlist, OBS and VLC are the documented route. A hardware encoder may be appropriate for other workflows, but verify that a specific device supports unattended local playlist playback before relying on it.

HLS is a separate ingestion setup
You do not need HLS settings just to loop local files through OBS. If you deliberately configure YouTube HLS ingestion, YouTube specifies TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, no byte ranges, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube also notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. These are ingestion requirements, not OBS playlist controls. See YouTube’s HLS setup guide.
Common problems and fixes
- VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC. If OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC, as specified in the OBS documentation.
- The playlist plays once and stops: Open the VLC Video Source’s playlist controls and confirm Loop Playlist is enabled. Check that the listed files are available and play correctly.
- The stream does not appear in YouTube: Confirm OBS is using the stream URL and key for the intended YouTube stream, then check the Live Control Room preview. If live streaming was just enabled, activation may take up to 24 hours.
- The preview is ready but the scheduled event is not live: Follow YouTube’s scheduled-stream flow and click Go live after the preview appears.
- The broadcast stops when you leave: The OBS method depends on the computer and connection running OBS. Playlist looping does not provide computer, power, network, or restart redundancy; monitor the stream and arrange an operating setup appropriate to the duration you need.
- Files appear in an unexpected order: Review the playlist order and disable shuffle if you want the same sequence on each repeat.
