To revoke an AI agent safely, disable the identity it uses, invalidate or remove its credentials and sessions, delete its IAM roles and OAuth grants, then monitor logs and dependent jobs before deleting anything. Token expiry can leave a short residual window, and removing one credential may not stop another identity, webhook, or application session. Treat deprovisioning as a lifecycle operation: inventory first, block authentication, remove permissions, verify the shutdown, and keep an audit record.
What does revoking an AI agent’s access actually involve?
An agent rarely has a single “access switch.” A production agent may authenticate as a cloud service account, an application or service principal, a human-owned account, or several of these at once. It can also hold API keys, client secrets, refresh tokens, OAuth consent grants, IAM role bindings, GitHub App authorizations, webhooks, and scheduled jobs.
Revocation is complete only when each path has been addressed. Disabling a service account does not automatically remove a role granted to a different principal, terminate an application’s own session cookie, or stop a job that is repeatedly trying to authenticate. The safe sequence is to preserve the identity for investigation, stop new sign-ins, revoke grants and sessions, account for already-issued tokens, and observe the result before deletion.

Start with an access map rather than deleting the first credential you find. Record the agent’s owner, purpose, expected lifetime, and every system that can act on its behalf. Microsoft’s service-account guidance calls for a configuration-management (CMDB) link, resource and script owners, a permission review, and an expected account lifetime.

Inventory the identity layer
- Primary identity: user account, service account, service principal, workload identity, or GitHub App installation.
- Alternate identities: emergency accounts, developer accounts used during setup, delegated users, and identities in another cloud or tenant.
- Owners: accountable person or team, technical operator, business owner, and escalation contact.
- Lifecycle data: creation date, purpose, planned end date, CMDB or asset record, and last-used timestamp.
Inventory credentials and grants
- Client secrets, private keys, API keys, personal access tokens, and certificate credentials.
- OAuth refresh tokens, consent grants, delegated permissions, and GitHub App or OAuth authorizations.
- IAM role bindings at the organization, folder, project, subscription, repository, database, queue, and storage-resource levels.
- Secrets stored in CI/CD systems, vaults, container environments, serverless settings, notebooks, and local configuration files.
Inventory execution paths
- Scheduled jobs, workflow runners, cron entries, event triggers, and serverless functions.
- Webhooks, message queues, connectors, tool servers, browser automation, and downstream applications.
- Resources the agent can create or modify, including data stores, repositories, production deployments, and billing or administrative systems.
- Monitoring, alerting, and audit-log destinations that should show the shutdown.
| Asset to record | Why it matters during revocation | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Identity and owner | Shows which account must be disabled and who can approve reactivation | Principal ID, owner, purpose, CMDB record |
| Credentials | Reveals alternate ways the agent could continue authenticating | Key or token identifier, issue time, expiry, storage location |
| Roles and grants | Prevents permissions from surviving under another credential | Binding, scope, grantor, and removal timestamp |
| Jobs and integrations | Explains repeated failures and possible business impact | Scheduler, webhook, repository, queue, and dependent owner |
| Logs | Provides proof of shutdown and evidence if compromise is suspected | Sign-in, token, resource-access, and administrative events |
What should I do first to stop new authentication?
Disable or block sign-in on the agent’s identity before removing resources. This is reversible and preserves the principal, metadata, and audit trail. If compromise is suspected, perform the block as an incident-containment action and apply an explicit deny control where the provider supports one.
- Confirm the principal ID and that you are operating in the correct tenant, project, account, or organization.
- Record the current status, roles, credentials, owners, and the reason for revocation.
- Disable the service account or clear the user or principal’s sign-in-enabled setting.
- Check the provider’s response and administrative audit log for a successful state change.
- Keep the identity disabled while you remove grants and inspect dependent activity.
Microsoft Entra ID
For an individual user or service identity represented as a user object, clear Account enabled in the identity’s settings. Then use Revoke sessions. Microsoft’s repeatable PowerShell response is:
Update-MgUser -AccountEnabled:$false
Revoke-MgUserSignInSession
The first command blocks future sign-in; the second invalidates sign-in sessions and refresh-token state supported by the account. Microsoft Entra access tokens default to one hour according to Microsoft Learn (2026), so applications using an already-issued access token can continue until that token expires unless the resource or application enforces an earlier block. Application-issued session cookies are controlled by the application and may require a separate logout or session-store action.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Google Cloud IAM
Disable the service account with the projects.serviceAccounts.disable operation. Google documents that disabling is immediate, rejects existing service-account access tokens, and prevents new tokens from being issued. Keep the account disabled while you investigate; deletion is a later decision.
Other identity providers
Use the provider’s equivalent “disable,” “block sign-in,” or “suspend” control on the exact principal that appears in logs. Do not assume that deleting a secret disables the identity: a second secret, workload identity, refresh token, or delegated user may still work.
How do I remove IAM roles, OAuth grants, and active sessions?
After authentication is blocked, remove authorization that could be reused if the identity is restored or another credential remains valid. Work from the access map and remove the narrowest binding first, checking inherited permissions at every parent scope.

Remove IAM permissions
- List direct and inherited role bindings for the agent’s principal.
- Identify bindings at organization, folder, project, repository, database, queue, and individual-resource scopes.
- Remove the principal from each unnecessary binding, starting with high-impact administrative roles.
- Check custom roles and group membership; removing a direct role does not remove access inherited through a group.
- Re-read the effective-permission view or run an authorization check to confirm the expected denial.
In Google Cloud, delete the principal’s role binding at the resource where it was granted. During a suspected compromise, an IAM deny policy can provide a broad containment layer while individual bindings are being located.
Revoke OAuth consent and refresh-token access
Remove the agent’s OAuth consent grants and delegated permissions from the provider and from each connected application. A consent grant may outlive the original application configuration, so verify the grant list after removal. Revoke refresh tokens or sign-in sessions where the platform exposes that control.
Terminate application sessions
Identity-provider revocation does not necessarily clear a cookie or session issued by the application itself. Expire the application session, invalidate its server-side session record, rotate the application’s signing key if justified, and force reauthentication according to that application’s recovery procedure. Document any users or services affected by this action.
Will revoking a token stop the agent immediately?
Not always. The result depends on the token type, provider, resource server, and whether the application checks the identity on every request. A credential can be revoked while a previously issued bearer token remains cryptographically valid until its lifetime ends, or an application can continue honoring its own session cookie.
| Token or session | What to expect | Containment action |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Entra access token | Default lifetime is one hour (Microsoft Learn, 2026); resource and application behavior determine when access is rejected | Disable the account, revoke sessions, remove roles, and enforce a resource-side deny if immediate containment is required |
| Google Cloud service-account bearer token | Normally lasts up to 60 minutes; an extended lifetime policy can allow up to 12 hours (Google Cloud) | Disable the service account or apply an IAM deny policy; individual short-lived tokens cannot be revoked separately |
| OAuth refresh token | Can mint new access tokens until the grant or token is revoked | Revoke the grant and refresh-token family at the identity provider and connected application |
| Application session cookie | May remain valid after identity-provider actions | Invalidate the application session or its server-side session record |
| API key, private key, or client secret | Remains usable until disabled, deleted, expired, or replaced | Revoke or rotate it, update every consumer, and verify failed authentication in logs |
Google notes that short-lived service-account tokens exist separately from the credential or permission used to create them and cannot be individually revoked. Disabling the service account blocks its use according to Google’s disable operation; an IAM deny policy is an additional control when requests must be blocked while bindings are still being removed.

Keep it disabled when
- The agent may be needed again, but no current workload requires it.
- You are investigating suspicious activity and need the identity, audit history, or resource ownership intact.
- Some dependencies are not yet identified or a business owner has not approved removal.
- Reauthorization would be expensive and the identity can be retained safely without permissions.
Delete after review when
- The owner confirms that all jobs, webhooks, integrations, and data dependencies have been migrated or retired.
- Credentials, grants, role bindings, and application sessions have been removed.
- Required audit evidence and incident records have been preserved.
- A defined observation period shows no unintended production impact.
Google recommends waiting at least 24 hours after disabling a service account while watching for unintended consequences before deletion. Microsoft likewise recommends disabling during review and deleting only after dependencies are understood.
What are the provider-specific procedures?
Microsoft Entra ID: user or service identity
- Open the identity in the Microsoft Entra admin center and clear Account enabled.
- Select Revoke sessions for the same identity.
- Remove directory roles, application assignments, group memberships, and delegated permissions that the agent no longer needs.
- Revoke or rotate client secrets, certificates, refresh tokens, and keys in the applications that use the identity.
- Inspect sign-in, audit, and resource logs for attempts after the disablement time.
- Leave the object disabled during the dependency review; delete it only after the owner approves and evidence is retained.
Use the PowerShell commands shown earlier when you need a repeatable change. If the agent uses an application-managed session, coordinate a session invalidation in that application as well.
Google Cloud IAM: service account
- Confirm the service-account email or unique ID and list projects, resources, jobs, and workloads that reference it.
- Invoke
projects.serviceAccounts.disable. - Delete the principal’s IAM role bindings at every resource where they were granted, including inherited scopes and groups.
- Disable or remove keys and update workloads that might contain copied credentials.
- For suspected compromise, apply an IAM deny policy while reviewing activity and rotating dependent secrets.
- Watch audit logs and scheduled-job failures for at least 24 hours before considering deletion.
Disabling preserves the identity for investigation. Deletion is irreversible from the perspective of the original principal and can complicate attribution or recovery.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
GitHub and OAuth-connected integrations
- Open the account, OAuth application, or GitHub App authorization associated with the agent.
- Revoke the authorization and delete installation-specific keys, tokens, and webhooks that the agent owns.
- Use GitHub’s credential-revocation capability for exposed token types where applicable.
- Search workflow files, repository secrets, deployment systems, and external vaults for copies of the credential.
- Reauthorize only after the owner has approved a replacement integration with the minimum required repository and organization permissions.
GitHub warns that these revocation actions are irreversible and can break automations. Treat the workflow or integration as a dependency to migrate, not as evidence that revocation failed.
How do I verify that the agent is really stopped?
Verification should test both the control plane and the data plane. A successful “disabled” response proves that a setting changed; it does not prove that every job, token, session, and alternate identity has stopped making useful requests.
- Identity check: confirm the principal is disabled or blocked and cannot obtain a new token.
- Authorization check: confirm removed roles, group-derived permissions, OAuth grants, and application assignments no longer appear in effective access.
- Credential check: confirm keys, secrets, refresh tokens, and certificates are revoked or rotated in every store.
- Session check: confirm identity-provider sessions and application-managed sessions are invalidated.
- Workload check: inspect schedulers, queues, webhooks, CI/CD runs, and serverless invocations for continued attempts.
- Log check: review sign-in, token, resource-access, administrative, and denial events before and after the change.
- Owner check: ask each dependent system owner to confirm whether the failure is expected and whether a migration is required.
Preserve the change ticket, command output, principal identifier, exact UTC timestamp, operator, reason, affected scopes, approvals, and relevant log references. GitHub specifically cautions that revocation can break automations and may require reauthorization, so record the integration owner and recovery path.

What can break after revocation, and how do I recover safely?
Scheduled jobs fail repeatedly
Repeated authentication failures usually indicate a scheduler, workflow runner, or function still references the identity. Keep the identity disabled, identify the owner from job metadata, and either retire the job or migrate it to a new least-privilege identity. Do not re-enable the old principal merely to make alerts stop.
A legitimate integration loses access
Confirm that the integration was actually owned by the retired agent and that no data or permission boundary was unintentionally removed. Create a replacement credential with only the required scopes, update the integration atomically, test it in a limited environment, and then remove the old grant.
Requests continue after the disablement
Check for another principal, cached application session, long-lived API key, copied private key, or token issued under an extended lifetime policy. Apply a deny policy or resource-side block during investigation, rotate dependent secrets, and compare source IPs, user agents, and request patterns in logs.
The team wants the identity restored
Require an owner, business justification, expiry date, and permission review before re-enabling. Restore only the minimum role bindings, issue new credentials instead of reusing exposed ones, and monitor the first executions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should I handle suspected compromise?
Use the same lifecycle sequence, but prioritize containment over graceful shutdown. Disable the identity immediately, apply a provider-level deny control where available, revoke refresh tokens and OAuth grants, rotate secrets and keys, and preserve logs before making destructive changes. Search for persistence such as newly created users, service accounts, role bindings, webhooks, scheduled jobs, and repository secrets.

What should the final deprovisioning record contain?
- Agent name, principal IDs, owner, purpose, environment, and expected lifetime.
- Disablement time in UTC, operator, approval, and the exact provider or command response.
- Removed role bindings, OAuth grants, application assignments, sessions, keys, secrets, and certificates.
- Scheduled jobs, webhooks, repositories, queues, and other dependencies checked.
- Residual-token assessment, including the applicable token lifetime and any deny policy used.
- Log queries, observed post-revocation activity, failed-job owners, and remediation decisions.
- Deletion approval, observation-period end time, and evidence that the identity was deleted or intentionally retained in a disabled state.
How do Microsoft Entra, Google Cloud, and GitHub differ?
| Provider and identity | Disable or revoke control | Residual-access consideration | Reversibility and dependency visibility | Reauthorization effort |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Entra user or service identity | Clear Account enabled; use Revoke sessions; remove roles, assignments, and grants | Access tokens default to one hour; application session cookies may follow separate rules | Disabling is reversible; audit and sign-in logs support dependency review | Depends on applications, delegated permissions, and rotated credentials |
| Google Cloud service account | Call projects.serviceAccounts.disable; remove IAM bindings; use an IAM deny policy for incident containment |
Bearer tokens normally last up to 60 minutes, or up to 12 hours with an extended lifetime policy; individual short-lived tokens are not separately revocable | Disabling preserves the identity; Google recommends at least 24 hours of observation before deletion | Workloads must be updated if they depended on the service account or its keys |
| GitHub OAuth or App integration | Revoke authorization; delete keys and tokens; revoke exposed token types through the credential-revocation capability | External workflows, repository secrets, and application sessions may continue until separately changed | GitHub states revocation actions are irreversible; workflow and repository history aid dependency discovery | Automation must be reauthorized with replacement scopes and credentials |
What questions do teams ask after revoking an AI agent?
Can I revoke access without deleting the agent’s data?
Yes. Disable the identity and remove its permissions while retaining prompts, configuration, logs, and outputs according to your retention policy. Separate data retention from identity deletion so an investigation or later migration does not depend on a deleted principal.
Does rotating one secret invalidate copies of the old secret?
No. A copied key remains usable wherever the provider still accepts it. Revoke the original key, search vaults and deployment settings for duplicates, and verify failed-authentication events from systems that should no longer connect.
How can I tell whether an agent is using a human account?
Correlate sign-in logs with noninteractive patterns, automation user agents, source networks, token issuance records, and the owner’s normal activity. If a human account is being used for automation, migrate the workload to a dedicated service identity before disabling the human account.
What if the agent has access in more than one cloud?
Run the inventory separately in each tenant, organization, and project, then correlate the same agent’s repositories, vault entries, schedulers, and network sources. A cloud-side disablement does not affect credentials issued by another provider, so each identity and token family needs its own revocation record.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I revoke an AI agent’s access without deleting its configuration?
Yes. Disable the identity and remove its permissions while retaining configuration, logs, prompts, and outputs under your retention policy. This preserves evidence and makes a controlled migration possible.
Does rotating one API key invalidate copies stored elsewhere?
No. Revoke the original key, search vaults, CI/CD variables, deployment settings, and notebooks for duplicates, and verify that old-key authentication attempts fail.
How can I detect an AI agent that is using a human account?
Compare sign-in logs with noninteractive patterns, automation user agents, source networks, token issuance, and the person’s normal activity. Migrate the workload to a dedicated service identity before disabling the human account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat should I do if the same agent has credentials in several clouds?
Inventory and revoke each cloud’s identity and token family independently. Disabling one provider’s principal does not affect credentials issued by another provider.
