To revoke an AI agent safely, act at the service that issued the authorization, then handle stored data separately. Stopping an agent inside an AI product may prevent that agent from running, but it does not necessarily remove the provider’s Google, GitHub, or other app grant. Likewise, disconnecting an account stops future access without automatically erasing conversations, synced files, memories, logs, or copies already held by the provider.
The reliable sequence is: identify every connected agent and account, stop the agent if appropriate, revoke the provider-side app authorization, check other workflows and accounts, rotate credentials if exposure is possible, and then delete retained data through the relevant retention and activity controls.
What does it mean to revoke an AI agent’s access?
Revocation has several independent layers. Treating them as one switch is the most common reason an agent remains connected or previously collected data remains available.

Approval prompts are a separate control again. A prompt that asks for confirmation before an already-connected app is used changes when the AI product asks; it does not revoke an authorization already granted to the provider account.

How do I revoke a Google account connection?
Use the Google Account linked-apps page to remove the app grant. If you only want to stop one Google AI agent while keeping the app link for another purpose, use Google’s separate Agent access control instead.
- Open the Google Account linked-apps page for the account that was connected.
- Select the app and choose See details. Read the access listed for that connection before changing it.
- Choose Remove access and confirm.
- To stop an agent without removing the app’s underlying link, filter the list for Agent access.
- Select the relevant app, choose Stop using, and confirm.
Google documents the result of the first path plainly: "If you remove access, the app can’t access your Google Account." The second path has a narrower effect. Google also explains that removing an agent’s permission does not disconnect or delete the Google Account link with that app.
When should I use Stop using?
Choose Stop using when the immediate goal is to halt a particular agent but preserve the app connection for another workflow or for later reconsideration. Because the app grant remains, use Remove access as well when you no longer trust the app, no longer use it, or want the provider authorization gone entirely.

When should I use Remove access?
Remove the grant when an app is unrecognized, outdated, broader than you intended, or connected to the wrong Google account. Removing it is the provider-side action; stopping an agent by itself is not a substitute for that revocation.
How do I disconnect a connected app in ChatGPT?
Disconnect the connected account from ChatGPT’s app controls, and then check whether the app provider has its own unlinking or authorization page.

- Open Settings.
- Choose Apps or Plugins, depending on the interface shown to you.
- Select the app and the connected account you want to remove.
- Open that account’s options and choose Disconnect.
- If the provider offers a separate account-unlinking control, use it too.
OpenAI documents that disconnecting stops future access through that account. It does not automatically delete existing or archived conversations, saved files, a Memory summary, or other saved memories. Those items require separate review in ChatGPT’s retention controls and, where applicable, in the provider’s own deletion and activity controls.
Why approval prompts are not revocation
ChatGPT’s app-permission settings control whether ChatGPT asks before using an app that is already connected. Changing that prompt behavior does not disconnect the app or revoke access that has already been granted to the provider account. Use Disconnect for the connection itself.

No. Disconnecting or revoking access is a forward-looking authorization change; it does not by itself erase information already retained. Review each type of copy separately.
- Conversations: Check existing and archived chats that contain content retrieved through the connection, and delete them using the available ChatGPT retention controls if you no longer want them stored.
- Saved files: Review files uploaded or synchronized during the connection and remove them through the applicable file controls.
- Memory summary and saved memories: Disconnecting does not automatically remove these. Review and delete them separately when they contain information obtained through the agent.
- Activity records: Look for provider activity or access-history controls and remove records where the provider offers that option.
- Provider-side copies: If the connected service maintains its own copy, use that service’s deletion or activity controls as well.
There is no single universal deletion switch across all AI agents and connected services. Revocation blocks the authorization path; data deletion depends on the storage location and the controls offered by each provider.

GitHub separates OAuth app authorizations from GitHub App authorizations, so use the screen that matches the connection.

Revoke an OAuth app
- Open GitHub and go to Settings > Applications > Authorized OAuth Apps.
- Review the listed applications and identify the token or app you no longer recognize or need.
- Select Revoke for that app. GitHub also provides Revoke all when you need to invalidate every authorization in that category.
Revoke a GitHub App
- Stay in GitHub’s application settings and open the separate Authorized GitHub Apps tab.
- Find the authorized GitHub App and revoke its authorization there.
These tabs are not interchangeable: an app listed as a GitHub App will not be removed by revoking an OAuth app entry, and vice versa. An organization owner may uninstall a GitHub App from the organization, but the person who authorized it controls revocation of that person’s authorization.

What is the complete revocation checklist?
Use this sequence when you are unsure how many agents, accounts, or copies are involved.
- Inventory the connections. List every agent, plugin, connected app, provider account, and account identity involved. Include personal and work accounts.
- Stop the agent in its product. Use the product’s stop, disable, or equivalent control so it cannot initiate another task while you investigate.
- Revoke the provider grant. Remove the Google app access, disconnect the ChatGPT account, or revoke the correct GitHub authorization screen entry.
- Check parallel paths. Look for other connected accounts, shared workflows, delegated automations, or a second app authorization that could still reach the same files or messages.
- Rotate exposed credentials. If compromise is possible, change affected passwords and replace API keys or refresh tokens. This is a prudent response step even when a provider’s documentation only describes authorization revocation.
- Review retained information. Inspect chats, synchronized files, memories, activity logs, and provider-side copies. Delete each category through the control that owns it.
- Reconnect cautiously. If access is still needed, reconnect only the minimum scopes required and verify the account shown in the authorization dialog.
How can I verify that access really ended?
Verification should cover both the agent product and the account that issued the grant.
- Return to the product’s app or agent settings and confirm the agent is stopped or the account is disconnected.
- Reopen the provider’s authorized-app list and confirm the relevant grant is gone or marked revoked.
- For Google, distinguish an entry under Agent access from the broader linked-app entry; stopping the former can leave the latter in place.
- For GitHub, inspect both Authorized OAuth Apps and Authorized GitHub Apps when you are not certain which integration was used.
- Check other accounts and shared workflows that may have their own authorization rather than relying on the one connection you just removed.
- Review recent activity and rotate credentials if anything occurred while the connection was active or if you cannot account for a token.
A successful stop in the AI product is not proof that the provider-side grant was removed. The provider’s authorization list is the authoritative place to confirm that specific account link has ended.
What if the app or agent is missing from the list?
Start by confirming the account identity and the authorization type. A connection may be attached to a different Google account, a different ChatGPT connected account, or the other GitHub authorization tab.

Check every account identity
Sign in to the account that appears in the original authorization dialog, not merely the account currently open in another browser tab. Repeat the inventory for personal, work, and organization accounts if the agent could have used more than one.
Check both provider authorization categories
GitHub has separate OAuth App and GitHub App lists. Google distinguishes the app link from the Agent access filter. ChatGPT may show the same app under a different connected account, and its interface may label the area Apps or Plugins.
Check shared and indirect workflows
An agent can be only one part of a shared workflow. Review other connected accounts, team automations, and provider-side copies so that removing one personal grant does not leave a second authorization active.

Revoke first, then reduce the value of anything that may have been exposed. Stop the agent, remove the provider authorization, and rotate affected passwords, API keys, and refresh tokens. If the provider offers an all-authorizations control, use it when you cannot identify which token was used.

How do I reconnect an agent safely after revoking it?
Reconnect only after you have decided that the workflow is still necessary and understand which account it will use.
- Open the agent’s connection flow and select the intended provider account.
- Read the requested scopes rather than accepting a broad grant automatically.
- Approve only the minimum permissions required for the task.
- Confirm the account name shown in the authorization dialog.
- Run a limited task first, then review the provider’s authorized-app list and the agent’s activity controls.
Keep the provider authorization and the agent’s approval prompts conceptually separate. Prompt settings can reduce unexpected use, but they do not replace narrow scopes or a revocable provider grant.
What mistakes commonly leave an AI agent connected?
- Only stopping the agent: The agent stops, but the app authorization remains. Remove the provider grant when the connection should end completely.
- Only changing approval prompts: Prompt behavior changes, while the existing authorization remains active. Disconnect or revoke it instead.
- Revoking the wrong GitHub type: OAuth Apps and GitHub Apps have separate lists. Check the matching tab.
- Assuming revocation deletes history: Existing chats, files, memories, logs, and provider copies need separate deletion actions.
- Forgetting another account: A second account or shared workflow may still hold access to the same service.
- Reconnecting with excessive scopes: Review the authorization dialog and grant only what the task requires.
What is the safest rule to remember?
Stop the agent, revoke the authorization at the account provider, and clean up retained data as three separate actions. Google’s Stop using and Remove access controls illustrate the distinction; ChatGPT’s Disconnect control illustrates why future access and stored data must be handled separately; GitHub’s two authorization tabs show why identifying the grant type matters.

Can I stop a Google AI agent without disconnecting the app?
