Safely revoking an AI agent is an incident-response operation, not a matter of deleting one API key. First identify every identity the agent can use—runtime service accounts, app registrations, roles, API keys, OAuth secrets, refresh and access tokens, sessions, delegated grants, connected tools, and copied credentials. Contain the running agent, then disable or restrict its identity, revoke active sessions and grants, rotate long-lived secrets, remove token-minting permissions, preserve evidence, and verify that access is actually blocked. The exact controls and token-expiry behavior depend on your cloud, identity provider, agent framework, and credential type.
What does it mean to revoke an AI agent’s access?
Revocation is complete only when the agent can no longer perform unauthorized actions and cannot obtain replacement credentials through another path. That usually requires several separate changes:
- Runtime control: stop, quarantine, or delete the agent instance, job, container, or workflow that is issuing requests.
- Identity control: disable the service account, application identity, workload identity, or user identity used by the agent, or apply a narrowly scoped deny rule.
- Credential control: revoke or replace API keys, service-account keys, client secrets, certificates, refresh tokens, and other long-lived secrets.
- Session control: invalidate active sessions and OAuth grants; access tokens already issued may need a separate block or may remain valid until expiry.
- Authorization control: remove roles, delegated permissions, impersonation rights, federation mappings, and token-creator privileges.
- Evidence and recovery: retain logs, investigate what the agent did, check for persistence, and restore only with replacement credentials and verified scope.
Document the provider and product version at the start of the incident. A Google Cloud service account, a Microsoft Entra application, and a framework-managed agent identity do not share the same revocation semantics.
Why is deleting an API key not enough?
One agent can have several independent ways to authenticate. Google Cloud’s credential inventory includes long-lived service-account private keys, API keys, OAuth client secrets, command-line credentials, and short-lived OAuth access tokens. The same agent may also have a runtime identity, active sessions, delegated user consent, and credentials copied into a pipeline, repository, environment variable, or secret store.

Deleting a signing key also does not necessarily invalidate tokens that were issued from it. Google’s key-management guidance states: Deleting a service account key does not revoke short-lived credentials that were issued based on the key.
Those tokens are separate credentials. In Google’s documented service-account model, access tokens can last up to 60 minutes by default, or up to 12 hours when an extended-lifetime policy is configured. The provider recommends disabling the represented service account or applying a deny policy to block active tokens instead of relying on key deletion.
Similarly, changing a password or suspending a user is not proof that every attacker-controlled OAuth access token has stopped working. Treat each credential class and each session mechanism as a separate revocation task.
How should I revoke an AI agent during a suspected compromise?
Use the following order when the agent may still be acting. Adapt the control names to your provider and preserve logs before deleting anything that could contain evidence.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Declare the incident and record scope. Note the agent name, environment, suspected start time, affected projects or tenants, owner, and the identity or secret first believed to be exposed. Restrict changes to the incident team and record each action.
- Map every access path. Inventory the runtime identity, service accounts or app registrations, inherited and direct roles, API keys, private keys, OAuth client secrets, refresh tokens, access tokens, active sessions, connected tools, webhooks, federation mappings, and credential copies in CI/CD, repositories, environment variables, images, and secret managers. Search both current and recently deleted versions where your platform supports it.
- Stop ongoing execution. Pause the agent’s schedule and queues, terminate workers, revoke tool connections, and remove network routes where practical. If the platform has a dedicated agent-runtime control, use it before changing credentials so new requests stop while you investigate.
- Apply the narrowest effective identity block. Disable the compromised identity when immediate containment outweighs outage risk. If a shared identity supports legitimate workloads, use a temporary deny policy or remove the agent principal’s grants while retaining the identity for forensics.
- Revoke and replace credentials by class. Disable or revoke exposed keys, client secrets, certificates, refresh tokens, and delegated grants. Deploy replacements to approved workloads, then remove the old values from every copy and configuration location.
- Close token-minting routes. Remove token-creator roles, service-account impersonation, OAuth consent, workload-federation bindings, and excessive administrator permissions that could let the agent or an attacker mint another credential.
- Preserve and investigate evidence. Export identity, audit, network, tool, and agent-session logs before retention windows expire. Look for sign-ins, token use, permission changes, newly created resources, data reads or exports, persistence mechanisms, and unfamiliar principals.
- Verify containment before recovery. Test denied calls, inspect remaining sessions and grants, and confirm that dependent services use only replacement credentials. Re-enable an identity only after responders approve the scope and timing.
How do I contain a Google Cloud agent?
Google Cloud’s agent-threat guidance treats the Agent Runtime instance, its sessions, service account, keys, and agent identity as distinct objects. For a compromised Agent Runtime instance, delete the corresponding instance to remove that agent identity, disable the potentially compromised service account and keys, inspect usage, and delete the service account only when doing so will not destroy evidence or disrupt required workloads.
Disable or restrict the service account
Disabling a service account blocks its short-lived tokens and removes resource access from workloads that use it, but it can also cause an immediate outage for every legitimate workload sharing that account. If you need to keep the account available for investigation, a scoped IAM deny policy can block the affected access while preserving the account and its history. Choose the smallest policy that stops the suspected activity and record its expiry or removal owner.

Replace a compromised service-account key
Google’s documented migration sequence is:
- Create a replacement key only if the workload still requires a key-based flow.
- Deploy the replacement to the intended workload and secret store.
- Disable the old key and confirm the workload continues operating with the replacement.
- Delete the old key after verification, then remove copies from repositories, images, build logs, local files, and environment variables.
During an active compromise, immediate disabling may be safer than a graceful migration. Deleting the key alone does not revoke short-lived tokens already issued from it.
Stop unauthorized token minting
Review who can impersonate the service account or create tokens for it. Remove the Service Account Token Creator role and other impersonation bindings when an unauthorized principal could use them. Also review workload-identity federation mappings and any automation account that can grant itself access.
Handle Google OAuth tokens separately
Use Google’s documented OAuth-token revocation control for user-authorized tokens and remove the connected application’s consent where appropriate. Revoking a refresh token also revokes its associated access tokens under that flow. Do not assume that suspending a user, resetting a password, or resetting sign-in cookies invalidates an attacker-controlled access token; verify the token type and provider behavior.
Wait for expiry before re-enabling
Google’s service-account response procedure says to wait at least 60 minutes after disabling the account before re-enabling it so a compromised token can expire. An extended-lifetime policy may require waiting longer—up to the configured 12-hour maximum. This timing applies to the documented Google service-account scenario, not to every Google credential or another provider.
How do I revoke a Microsoft Entra application or agent?
In Microsoft Entra, treat the application registration, service principal, delegated permissions, client secrets or certificates, workload identity, and user sessions as separate controls. Microsoft’s application-investigation guidance includes disabling a compromised application as a containment action.

- Disable the service principal or application registration to stop new sign-ins while responders assess outage impact.
- Remove suspicious delegated permissions, application permissions, consent grants, federation mappings, and role assignments.
- Revoke or replace client secrets and certificates, then update every dependent workload and secret store.
- Invalidate refresh tokens and sessions using the tenant’s documented revocation controls, and review Conditional Access or workload policies that could preserve access.
- Search sign-in and audit logs for token use, consent changes, new credentials, resource creation, and unusual data access.
Microsoft notes that access revocation can take time to propagate and that its default access tokens last one hour. Do not promise instantaneous blocking; test the specific application and tenant after each containment action.

Which revocation action should I choose first?
The fastest action is not always the safest long-term action. Compare the available controls against outage risk and evidence needs.
| Action | Containment speed | Effect on existing tokens | Stops new token issuance? | Outage and evidence considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stop or delete the agent runtime | Immediate for that runtime | Does not necessarily invalidate tokens used elsewhere | Only if the runtime was the issuer | Preserve session and runtime logs before deletion; other workloads may continue |
| Disable a service account or application | Fast, subject to provider propagation | Provider-specific; Google blocks service-account access represented by the identity | Usually blocks use of the disabled identity | Can interrupt every dependent workload; reversible after investigation |
| Apply a scoped deny policy | Fast after policy propagation | Blocks matching access without deleting the identity | Only for the denied resources or actions | Preserves forensic objects and limits blast radius; policy must be removed deliberately |
| Delete or disable a key/secret | Fast for future use of that credential | May leave already issued access tokens valid | Stops minting through that key, not through other principals | Rotate dependent workloads first when an outage is unacceptable |
| Revoke refresh tokens or OAuth grants | Provider-dependent | Often invalidates associated access tokens; confirm the provider’s rule | Prevents renewal through that grant | May sign out legitimate users and connected tools |
When compromise is active, combine a runtime stop with an identity block, then rotate credentials and permissions. When the identity is shared, a deny policy or removal of only the agent’s grants can contain the incident with less collateral damage.
How can I verify that revocation worked?
Verification should attempt the actions an attacker would take, not just check that a key disappeared from a console.
- Use the old key, secret, refresh token, and session from a controlled test and confirm authentication or authorization fails.
- Attempt the agent’s former tool calls and access to representative protected resources; confirm denied events appear in logs.
- Check for remaining service-account keys, app credentials, OAuth grants, federation subjects, impersonation bindings, and administrator roles.
- Confirm that no active worker, scheduled job, webhook, queue consumer, container image, or pipeline still contains the old value.
- Compare identity and audit logs before and after containment for continued token use, delayed jobs, new resources, permission changes, or data exports.
- Ask resource owners to verify that dependent services now authenticate with the replacement identity and that the replacement has only required permissions.
Record the provider’s observed propagation delay and the exact test time. A successful console change without a failed-use test is not proof of containment.

What should I investigate after access is blocked?
Back up relevant logs and preserve affected resources before cleanup. Review agent sessions, service-account usage, application sign-ins, key use, resource creation, permission changes, data reads, exports, and calls to connected tools. Google’s guidance specifically recommends looking for unfamiliar resources that the compromised credential could access; isolate them for forensic analysis or delete them only after evidence requirements are satisfied.
Trace every place the credential may have been copied: source control history, build artifacts, container layers, crash reports, debug output, notebooks, local developer files, and third-party integrations. If a secret appeared in a repository or image, rotation without removal from history leaves a future disclosure path.
Use an incident process with named roles for triage, containment, investigation, remediation, communications, and prevention. Microsoft’s identity-response template emphasizes adapting those stages to your organization’s roles, telemetry, and escalation paths.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I restore an agent safely?
Restore only after the incident owner approves the evidence review and replacement credentials are confirmed.
- Build a clean runtime or redeploy from a trusted artifact; do not restart a potentially modified worker.
- Create a dedicated workload identity where possible instead of reusing a broad shared account.
- Grant the minimum roles and tool permissions required for the agent’s current tasks; remove inherited access that is not needed.
- Inject replacement secrets through an approved secret manager and prevent them from appearing in logs or process arguments.
- Enable short credential lifetimes, key-use alerts, anomalous sign-in detection, and audit-log retention appropriate to the workload.
- Run a canary invocation against non-sensitive resources, then expand gradually while monitoring denied and successful calls.
- Keep the old identity disabled or deleted until responders close the incident and document why any remaining exception exists.
What preventive controls make future revocation easier?
- Give each agent its own service identity and separate production, staging, and development accounts.
- Prefer short-lived, workload-bound credentials and federation over static private keys where the platform supports them.
- Keep role grants, token-creator permissions, OAuth consent, and connected tools narrowly scoped and reviewed on a schedule.
- Store secrets in a managed vault, scan repositories and images, and rotate on a tested schedule rather than only after an incident.
- Maintain an inventory that maps every agent to its runtime, identity, credentials, owners, data stores, and emergency disable control.
- Test the revocation runbook in a non-production environment, including outage recovery and token-expiry assumptions.
- Alert on new keys, unusual token issuance, privilege changes, unfamiliar resources, and access from unexpected locations or workloads.
Google Cloud’s general operational advice is concise: If you suspect a credential is compromised, revoke and reissue it.
The practical meaning is to revoke every relevant path, not merely the first secret discovered.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does rotating an API key revoke existing access tokens?
Not necessarily. A rotated or deleted key usually prevents future use of that key, while tokens already issued may remain valid until the provider blocks them or they expire. Check the provider’s token model and explicitly revoke sessions or disable the identity when immediate blocking is required.
Will resetting an agent owner’s password stop the agent?
Only if the agent truly authenticates as that user and the identity provider invalidates its sessions and tokens. Service accounts, app registrations, workload identities, delegated grants, and copied secrets are independent and require their own containment actions.
How do I revoke credentials stored in a container image or CI pipeline?
Disable or rotate the credential first, then remove it from pipeline variables, image layers, build logs, caches, and source-control history. Rebuild from a clean base and verify that old artifacts cannot still run with the replaced value.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How long should I wait before re-enabling a disabled identity?
There is no universal interval. Google’s documented service-account procedure uses at least 60 minutes, or longer when an extended token-lifetime policy applies; Microsoft Entra documents one-hour default access tokens and warns that revocation can take time to propagate. Follow the provider-specific guidance and verify with a failed-use test.
What evidence should I preserve before deleting an agent?
Export identity and audit logs, agent sessions, network and tool-call records, credential-use history, permission changes, and records of resources created or accessed. Preserve suspicious resources for analysis before deleting them, subject to your retention and legal requirements.
