Use a browser-rendered HTML API when the page’s useful content appears only after JavaScript runs. A normal HTTP client receives the server’s initial source; a rendered-HTML service opens the URL in a real or managed headless browser, executes page scripts, waits for content to become ready, and returns the browser’s resulting DOM/HTML. That is the representation your scraper, crawler, archive, or downstream parser needs for React, Angular, Vue, jQuery, and other JavaScript-heavy pages.

The right provider depends on whether you only need final HTML or also need clicks, scrolling, sessions, cookies, geolocation, network capture, screenshots, alternate output formats, or selector-based extraction. Browserless is the most direct fit for rendered HTML. Zyte adds extensive browser automation and session controls. ScrapingBee combines JavaScript rendering with configurable waits and several extraction outputs.

What “fully rendered HTML” means

There are two different documents involved in a JavaScript-heavy request:

  • Initial source HTML: the bytes returned by the origin server before a browser executes scripts.
  • Rendered browser HTML: the DOM after the browser has parsed the source, run JavaScript, fetched asynchronous data, and changed the page.

An extraction API that supports browser rendering returns the second representation. Zyte describes browser HTML as “the HTML representation of the Document Object Model (DOM) of a webpage after it has been rendered in a browser.” Browserless similarly describes its Content API as fetching fully rendered HTML from a real browser, including JavaScript-rendered content.

Rendering is not the same as downloading every resource or guaranteeing that every visual element is present. A page may still be loading data, waiting for an interaction, hiding content in an iframe, or requiring an authenticated session. Your request must therefore define when the page is ready and which browser state is required.

Which HTML extraction API should you choose?

Provider Best fit Rendered HTML controls Additional capabilities Important qualification
Browserless A simple final-HTML or text response from a URL or inline HTML Content API, documented as POST /content, with a token query parameter Managed real-browser rendering and an HTML response with media type text/html Choose it when the required result is primarily rendered page content rather than a larger automation workflow.
Zyte Sites needing browser actions, sessions, redirects, cookies, geolocation, or network capture Set browserHtml=true to receive the browser HTML string; set includeIframes=true when iframe content is required Browser automation, screenshots, JavaScript toggling, redirect following, session and cookie handling, and network capture Iframes are empty by default, so iframe-heavy pages need explicit handling.
ScrapingBee A single API with JavaScript rendering, waits, and multiple output formats render_js is true by default; use wait or wait_for for asynchronous readiness Raw pre-render HTML, rendered HTML, page text or Markdown, screenshots, CSS-selector extraction, and optional AI extraction Rendering, proxy class, and extraction add-ons consume different credit amounts.

Compare providers on successful rendered pages, not on a nominal request price. Rendering fidelity, readiness controls, iframe behavior, redirects, proxy and geolocation features, cookies, authentication, anti-bot handling, output type, and operational limits can change whether a request produces usable HTML.

Browserless: request the rendered document directly

Browserless is the shortest path when your application needs the post-JavaScript HTML and does not require a large browser-automation sequence. Its Content API accepts either a URL or inline HTML and returns rendered content as text/html.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Create and protect a Browserless token in your server-side configuration. Do not expose it in browser JavaScript, public source code, or client logs.
  2. Send a POST request to the documented /content endpoint. The token is supplied as a query parameter, while the request body identifies the page or inline HTML to render.
  3. Read the response as HTML text rather than attempting to parse it as JSON. Preserve the response encoding before passing it to your HTML parser.
  4. Run your normal extraction logic against the returned DOM. If the result still contains a loading shell, treat readiness as a failed fetch and investigate timing or page-state requirements rather than silently storing it.

This pattern is appropriate for a crawler that needs the final markup, a pipeline that converts rendered pages to text, or a service that accepts HTML fragments and wants Browserless to process them in a browser context. It is less suitable when the page must be clicked through several states or when you need provider-specific session and network controls.

Zyte: request browser HTML with broader controls

Zyte is the stronger option when HTML is only one part of a browser workflow. Set browserHtml=true to receive the browser HTML string after rendering. The same platform can be used when you need browser actions, redirect following, cookies, sessions, geolocation, JavaScript switches, screenshots, or network capture.

  1. Decide whether JavaScript should run for this target. Keep it disabled for pages whose content is already in the source when that reduces latency and cost; enable browser rendering for client-generated content.
  2. Request browser HTML with browserHtml=true.
  3. For pages that embed meaningful content in frames, add includeIframes=true. Without that setting, Zyte documents iframe content as empty by default.
  4. Configure authentication, cookies, geolocation, redirects, or browser actions only when the target requires them. Each extra state increases the number of ways a request can fail, so record the settings with the fetched result.
  5. Parse the returned browser HTML and retain the response metadata needed to reproduce a failure, such as the final URL and whether a session was used.

Zyte’s broader control surface is valuable for authenticated dashboards, localized pages, pages that redirect through several hosts, and targets where a network request must be observed before extraction. If you only need a final HTML string and no browser state, those controls may be unnecessary overhead.

ScrapingBee: combine rendering, waits, and extraction formats

ScrapingBee’s HTML API enables JavaScript rendering by default through its render_js setting. Its documentation specifically positions the service for React, Angular, jQuery, Vue, and other single-page applications. It can return rendered HTML, raw pre-render HTML, page text or Markdown, screenshots, CSS-selector results, and optional AI extraction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Send the target page to the HTML API with JavaScript rendering enabled. Because render_js defaults to true, verify the setting explicitly in shared code so a future configuration change cannot alter your output unexpectedly.
  2. Use a fixed wait when the application needs a predictable delay after navigation, or use wait_for to wait for a selector that signals the content you need.
  3. Select the smallest useful output. Rendered HTML is appropriate when your own parser needs the DOM; text, Markdown, or CSS-selector extraction can reduce downstream work when you do not need the complete markup.
  4. Add screenshot or AI extraction only for workflows that need them. They are separate capabilities with separate credit implications.

A selector-based readiness condition is generally safer than an arbitrary sleep: it ties completion to an element that represents usable content. You still need a timeout and a failure path for pages where the selector never appears.

Make JavaScript readiness explicit

Calling a browser-rendered endpoint does not automatically mean the page has finished its asynchronous work. Single-page applications may fetch data after the initial load, replace skeleton components, or render different markup after a user action.

  • Use a readiness selector: wait for a result container, article heading, product grid, or other element that must exist in a successful page.
  • Use a bounded delay only when necessary: a fixed wait can help with animations or delayed requests, but it should have a maximum so a broken page cannot consume an unbounded browser session.
  • Model interactions as state changes: if content appears only after clicking a tab, expanding a panel, scrolling, or submitting a form, configure a provider that supports those actions rather than expecting navigation alone to reveal it.
  • Capture failure evidence: retain a screenshot, final URL, response status, and relevant timing data when a readiness condition times out. This distinguishes a selector mistake from a blocked or broken page.

Readiness is part of your extraction contract. Document the element or event that proves the page is usable, and test that contract whenever the target site changes its front-end.

Iframes, redirects, cookies, and sessions

Iframes

Content inside an iframe belongs to a separate document. A parent page can look complete while the data you need remains inside a frame. Zyte states that iframe HTML is empty by default unless includeIframes=true is enabled. With any provider, verify whether frames are returned inline, represented as frame elements only, or require separate navigation. If the frame is hosted on another origin, cross-origin restrictions and authentication can affect what a browser session can see.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Redirects

Record the final URL, not just the URL you submitted. Redirect chains can move a request to a locale-specific host, a login page, or an interstitial. A successful HTTP response is not proof that the intended document was reached; check the final URL and a page-specific readiness condition.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Cookies and authenticated sessions

Public pages can often be rendered with a clean browser context. Account pages, consent-gated content, and personalized dashboards need cookies or an authenticated session. Keep credentials and session material in a secure server-side store, scope them to the smallest required domain, and avoid sharing one user’s state across unrelated jobs. Zyte is the provider in this comparison whose documented feature set explicitly includes session and cookie handling.

Geolocation and network behavior

Some pages select language, currency, inventory, or legal notices from the request’s location. A geolocation-capable browser or proxy can make the returned DOM differ from a request made elsewhere. Network capture is useful when a page’s visible content comes from an API call you need to audit or reproduce, but it should complement—not replace—validation of the final HTML.

Output choices: HTML, text, Markdown, JSON, and screenshots

Choose output based on the next processing step:

  • Rendered HTML: retains the DOM structure for your own parser, link extraction, semantic analysis, or archival.
  • Page text or Markdown: useful for search indexing, summarization, and language processing when layout details are not needed.
  • CSS-selector extraction: reduces the response to known fields and can simplify a stable, narrowly scoped pipeline.
  • JSON or AI extraction: useful for schema-shaped records, but you should retain the source HTML or a reproducible reference when auditability matters.
  • Screenshot: verifies visual state and helps diagnose missing overlays, consent dialogs, or late-rendering components; it is not a substitute for the DOM.

Do not assume text output contains everything that HTML contains. Hidden attributes, links, data elements, and accessibility markup can disappear during text conversion. Conversely, do not store full HTML when a selector result is sufficient for a high-volume job and your retention policy does not require the source.

Provider Published usage evidence How to interpret it
Zyte Browser-rendered pay-as-you-go tiers range from $1.01 to $16.08 per 1,000 requests, depending on site tier. The applicable site tier and the definition of a browser-rendered request determine your effective cost.
ScrapingBee A classic proxy request with JavaScript rendering uses 5 credits; AI extraction adds 5 credits; premium proxy plus JavaScript rendering uses 25 credits before AI add-ons. Credits are vendor-specific. Proxy class, rendering mode, and add-ons must be included in the calculation.
Browserless Not stated in the supplied pricing evidence. Use the provider’s current plan and request accounting when estimating cost.

For an operational estimate, divide total monthly spend by successful usable rendered pages, not by raw attempts. Include retries, timeout failures, premium proxies, screenshots, AI extraction, and any one-time allowances. Track those dimensions separately so a change in readiness settings does not look like a mysterious price increase.

Validate that the returned HTML is really usable

  1. Compare a known server-rendered element with the same page fetched by a plain HTTP client. The rendered response should contain the client-generated content you expected.
  2. Assert the presence of a page-specific element, such as an article title or result count, rather than checking only that the response is non-empty.
  3. Check that the final URL is allowed and that the document is not a login, consent, CAPTCHA, or error page.
  4. For iframe targets, assert the expected frame content or run a separate frame-aware extraction path.
  5. Store a small diagnostic sample of raw and rendered responses during development. Remove or redact personal data and credentials before retention.

Common symptoms have predictable causes:

  • Only a skeleton appears: the request finished before asynchronous data arrived; add a selector wait or a bounded delay.
  • The page is a login screen: the target requires a session, cookies, or authentication.
  • The main content is missing but the frame element exists: enable iframe inclusion or navigate to the frame document as supported by the provider.
  • The wrong language or inventory appears: set the intended geolocation and preserve the locale-related cookies.
  • Repeated timeouts or challenge pages occur: review proxy, anti-bot, browser, and request-rate settings; do not treat retries as a substitute for diagnosing the block.

Security, reliability, and maintenance checklist

  • Keep API tokens, login credentials, and cookies on the server side.
  • Allow-list destination hosts when users can submit URLs, and block private-network addresses to reduce server-side request forgery risk.
  • Set navigation, readiness, and total-job timeouts; cap retries with exponential backoff.
  • Cache immutable pages where permitted, but key the cache by URL, locale, session state, and rendering options.
  • Respect the target’s terms, access controls, and applicable privacy law. Do not collect authenticated or personal data without a lawful basis.
  • Monitor success rate, readiness failures, final-domain changes, average render time, and cost per successful page.
  • Re-test selectors and iframe assumptions when the target site deploys a front-end change.

A practical selection rule

Pick Browserless when your contract is “give me the final HTML for this URL or inline document.” Pick Zyte when browser state, actions, geolocation, redirects, cookies, or network capture are central to the job. Pick ScrapingBee when you want JavaScript rendering by default plus configurable waits and a choice among HTML, text, Markdown, screenshots, CSS extraction, and AI extraction.

Whichever API you use, treat rendered HTML as the output of a browser workflow, not as a faster version of a plain HTTP download. Define readiness, verify the final document, account for frames and session state, and measure cost per successful result.
