If an MSI Afterburner overclock makes Windows or games crash, you can normally recover without replacing hardware or resetting Windows. When Windows remains usable, open Afterburner, click the circular-arrow Reset control, and apply the defaults. You can also press Ctrl+D, which MSI documents as an automatic default-setting command that keeps saved profiles intact.
Then prevent the unstable values from being loaded again: disable Apply overclocking at system startup, and disable Start with Windows while troubleshooting. If an OC Scanner curve keeps returning, use OC Scanner > Revert. When normal Windows startup is unusable, enter Windows Recovery Environment and use Safe Mode to stop Afterburner from applying the overclock.
What you need before starting
This is a software recovery procedure. The documented fix requires MSI Afterburner and, if Windows cannot remain open, Windows Recovery Environment; it does not require a replacement graphics card, a repair utility, or a factory reset.

- Use an account that can open MSI Afterburner and change its settings.
- Save any unsaved work before restarting.
- Expect menu wording or the appearance of controls to vary slightly between Afterburner versions and skins.
- Do not delete saved profiles unless you deliberately want to remove them. MSI says the
Ctrl+Ddefault command leaves saved profiles intact.
The aim is to return the active GPU configuration to defaults first, then remove the path that reapplies the unstable values at boot.

Choose the recovery path
Use the least disruptive route that matches what you can still access:
- Windows is usable: reset the GPU in the main Afterburner window, disable both startup behaviors, and restart to test.
- The same OC Scanner curve returns: open OC Scanner and select Revert after resetting the main controls.
- Windows crashes before you can work: use Windows Recovery Environment, start Safe Mode through Startup Settings, and disable Afterburner’s startup behavior from there.
Resetting values and stopping automatic reapplication are separate jobs. Completing only the first can leave the machine vulnerable to another crash on the next boot.
Reset the GPU when Windows is still usable
Use the Reset control
- Open MSI Afterburner.
- Locate the circular-arrow Reset control in the main Afterburner window and click it. MSI’s Afterburner support documentation identifies this control as the way to return the main GPU to its default setting.
- Apply the reset settings. If your version presents a separate Apply button, click it after Reset has filled in the default values.
- Leave the application open long enough to confirm that the controls now show the default configuration, then continue to the startup-setting steps below.
Reset changes the active GPU settings; it is not the same as deleting an Afterburner profile. If a profile contains the problematic overclock, it can still exist as a saved preset even though it is no longer active.
Use Ctrl+D instead
Press Ctrl+D in Afterburner to automatically apply the defaults. MSI describes this shortcut as applying default settings while preserving saved profiles. It is useful when you want a quick reset without discarding presets that may contain known-good configurations.
| Method | How to invoke it | What MSI documents | When it is most useful |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reset control | Click the circular-arrow Reset icon in the main window, then apply the values if required. | Returns the main GPU to its default setting. | You want a visible, mouse-driven reset and confirmation of the values shown in the window. |
| Ctrl+D | Press Ctrl+D while Afterburner is open. |
Automatically applies defaults and keeps saved profiles intact. | You want the fastest keyboard method without removing profiles. |
| OC Scanner Revert | Open OC Scanner and click Revert. | MSI’s FAQ recommends it to completely revert an overclocking curve that keeps being applied. | A scanner-generated curve returns after a reboot or shutdown. |
The Reset control and Ctrl+D are two ways to perform the ordinary return-to-default operation. They are not profile-management commands: keeping a profile does not mean that its values are active, and resetting the active values does not prove that an automatically applied curve has been removed.
Stop Afterburner from applying the overclock at startup
Afterburner has two related but separate startup behaviors. Start with Windows launches the application when Windows starts. Apply overclocking at system startup applies the current voltage, clock, and fan-control values during startup. A crash loop can continue if either behavior causes the unstable configuration to be loaded again.
- In Afterburner, clear Apply overclocking at system startup. This is the critical setting when the GPU returns to the bad clock, voltage, or fan values after every reboot.
- While diagnosing the problem, also clear Start with Windows so Afterburner does not launch automatically.
- Click Apply if your version requires it, then close Afterburner.
- Restart Windows and check whether the crash returns before manually opening Afterburner.
| Control | Effect | Recommended state during recovery |
|---|---|---|
| Start with Windows | Launches Afterburner when Windows starts. | Off while troubleshooting, so the application does not open automatically. |
| Apply overclocking at system startup | Applies the current voltage, clock, and fan-control settings at Windows startup. | Off until the system has been stable at defaults. |
These controls should be checked independently. Turning off the application launch does not by itself guarantee that startup overclocking is disabled, and disabling startup application does not repair an already-active setting until you reset it.

Why both switches matter
It is easy to assume that stopping the application from opening also stops every startup action. MSI documents the two functions separately, so treat them as separate checks. First reset the currently loaded values. Next turn off the setting that applies voltage, clock, and fan controls at startup. Finally turn off automatic application launch while you test. This order prevents a reset from being immediately overwritten and makes the next reboot a meaningful test.
Revert an OC Scanner curve that keeps coming back
If the ordinary Reset or Ctrl+D action appears temporary and the same curve is restored after shutdown or restart, use the specific OC Scanner reversal documented by MSI.
- Open MSI Afterburner.
- Open OC Scanner.
- Click Revert to completely revert the overclocking settings.
- Return to the main Afterburner window and verify that the startup-application controls remain disabled.
- Restart Windows and check whether the curve is still reapplied.
MSI’s FAQ, updated August 1, 2022, addresses the situation in which the GPU core clock keeps applying an Afterburner overclocking curve after a restart or shutdown and specifically recommends OC Scanner > Revert: MSI Canada FAQ 7536.
Use Revert for this persistence problem rather than repeatedly clicking Reset and assuming the result will survive a reboot. The commands have different purposes: Reset or Ctrl+D returns the active configuration to defaults, while OC Scanner’s Revert addresses a scanner-generated curve that continues to be applied.
Recover when Windows will not stay usable
A severe overclock can make Windows crash before you have enough time to open Afterburner. In that case, use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) to start in Safe Mode. Microsoft explains that Safe Mode starts Windows with basic device drivers and default settings, which can help isolate a startup problem.
Open Startup Settings through Windows Recovery Environment
- Enter Windows Recovery Environment. If Windows repeatedly fails to start, it normally presents recovery options; you can also use the recovery entry provided by your Windows installation or device configuration.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Startup Settings.
- Select Restart.
- After the restart, choose the Safe Mode option shown on screen.
Microsoft’s current route and the available choices are documented in Windows startup settings. The exact key or numbered choice can vary with Windows version and device configuration, so follow the labels displayed by your computer.
Disable the overclock from Safe Mode
- Wait for the Safe Mode desktop to load. The display may look different because Windows is using basic drivers.
- If Afterburner launches, turn off Apply overclocking at system startup and, if necessary, Start with Windows. Apply the changes and close the program.
- If Afterburner does not launch automatically, open it manually in Safe Mode and perform the same changes. Then use the circular-arrow Reset control or press
Ctrl+Dto apply defaults. - If the persistent setting came from OC Scanner, open OC Scanner and select Revert.
- Restart the computer normally and allow Windows to load without Afterburner starting automatically.
Safe Mode is an escalation path, not a replacement for resetting the GPU. Its purpose here is to give you a stable Windows session in which you can stop Afterburner from launching or applying the bad values.

What Safe Mode does and does not prove
A successful Safe Mode boot shows that Windows can start with basic drivers and default settings; it does not by itself confirm that the normal graphics configuration is fixed. You still need to change Afterburner’s startup settings, reset the active GPU values, and test a normal restart. If the normal desktop remains unstable after those steps, return to Safe Mode rather than repeatedly forcing normal boots while the same startup setting is enabled.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteVerify that the default configuration remains in place
After the first successful normal boot, verify the recovery in a controlled order rather than immediately loading an old profile.
- Open Afterburner manually.
- Confirm that the GPU controls show the default values after the reset. Do not load an overclocking profile yet.
- Check that Apply overclocking at system startup is still disabled.
- Check that Start with Windows is still disabled while you test stability.
- Close Afterburner and restart Windows once more. This tests whether a startup action, rather than the interactive Afterburner window, is causing the recurrence.
- If Windows remains usable and the curve has not returned, the unstable startup configuration has been removed. Keep the system at defaults until you have identified a stable configuration.
This sequence separates three events that are easy to confuse: resetting values in the running session, launching Afterburner automatically, and applying an overclock during boot.
Do not reload a profile during the first test
Saved profiles can remain available because MSI says Ctrl+D preserves them, but leave them untouched during the first normal-boot test. Loading a profile immediately would make it difficult to tell whether the recovery worked or whether the profile recreated the crash. Once the machine has demonstrated stability at defaults, any later profile test should be manual rather than automatically applied at startup.
Troubleshoot the most common recovery failures
The reset appears to work, but the crash returns after reboot
Check Apply overclocking at system startup first, because that control is specifically responsible for applying voltage, clock, and fan-control values when Windows starts. Also disable Start with Windows so the program cannot immediately restore a profile when it opens.

Use OC Scanner > Revert. MSI’s FAQ treats a repeatedly reapplied scanner curve as a separate case from a normal one-time reset.
You cannot find the exact control names
Afterburner skins and versions can change the placement or appearance of controls. Look for the circular-arrow icon for Reset and for wording that contains Start with Windows or Apply overclocking at system startup. MSI notes these controls in its official Afterburner instructions; the labels may not be positioned identically in every skin.

Windows crashes before Afterburner can be opened
Do not keep attempting normal boots while the same setting is being reapplied. Use Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart in WinRE, select Safe Mode, and disable Afterburner’s startup behavior from that session.
Safe Mode looks different or has limited graphics behavior
That is expected: Microsoft describes Safe Mode as using basic device drivers and default settings. Use the session for recovery tasks, not for judging normal game or display performance. Reset Afterburner, disable its startup controls, and then restart normally.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →You are considering a Windows factory reset
A Windows factory reset is not the first-line fix for an Afterburner overclock. The documented recovery targets Afterburner’s Reset or Ctrl+D controls, the startup switches, OC Scanner’s Revert command, and Safe Mode. A factory recovery is a separate operation that can remove data or other system changes, so it should not be used merely to undo a GPU setting.
You are tempted to buy replacement hardware
The documented procedure is software-based. Nothing in these recovery steps requires a replacement GPU, a generic repair tool, or another physical accessory. Resolve the active settings and startup behavior before treating the crash as evidence of hardware failure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do after the system is stable
Keep the successful default configuration available before experimenting again. Because Ctrl+D preserves saved profiles, you can retain profiles for later review while leaving automatic application disabled. If you later test a profile, apply it manually and restart only after confirming that the system remains stable at the intended settings.
- Change one category of setting at a time so a crash has a clear cause.
- Keep Apply overclocking at system startup off until a configuration has survived normal use and a restart.
- Do not treat a saved profile as proof that its values are safe for every workload.
- If a scanner-generated curve is no longer wanted, use Revert rather than relying only on a temporary reset.
When you are ready to experiment again, preserve the recovery path: know where Reset, Ctrl+D, and OC Scanner’s Revert command are located, and remember that the two startup controls have different effects. Keeping automatic application disabled means a failed manual test should not automatically become the next boot’s configuration.

MSI’s documented wording
MSI’s How to use MSI Afterburner support documentation states: “To revert the GPU to default settings during testing, simply click ‘Reset’ (circular arrow icon) or use Ctrl+D for automatic application, ensuring your saved profiles remain intact.” This statement is the basis for using either the Reset control or Ctrl+D during recovery. The full instructions are available at MSI’s Afterburner support page.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchCan I fix this without buying a new graphics card?
Yes. The documented recovery is software-based: reset Afterburner, disable its startup behaviors, use OC Scanner’s Revert command when appropriate, or use Windows Safe Mode if normal startup is unusable.
What if Windows crashes before Afterburner opens?
Enter Windows Recovery Environment and choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then select Safe Mode. From Safe Mode, disable Afterburner’s startup behavior and reset the GPU.
Is a factory reset of Windows necessary?
No. A Windows factory reset is a separate operation that can remove data or other system changes. Use Afterburner’s documented reset controls, OC Scanner Revert, and Safe Mode first.
The Bottom Line
Click Afterburner’s circular-arrow Reset control or press Ctrl+D, then turn off both Apply overclocking at system startup and Start with Windows. If an OC Scanner curve returns, choose OC Scanner > Revert. When normal startup is unusable, use WinRE’s Safe Mode route to make those changes. No replacement hardware or Windows factory reset is required for this documented recovery.
