To report a police sighting in Waze, tap Report > Police, choose an available subtype if it fits, then submit. For a road problem, tap Report > Hazard and select the matching type. Report only incidents you see in real time, and place the report as close to the actual incident as possible.

Waze does not document a separate speed-trap-only reporting flow: the category to use for a police sighting is Police. You can also report by voice where Talk to report is supported. The right route depends on which feature is available and whether you can confidently describe what you observed.

Report a police sighting or speed trap

Waze’s documented category is Police; its help instructions do not describe a separate speed-trap-only reporting flow. Use Police for a police sighting, including when you might casually call it a speed trap. The app may offer more specific choices after you select Police, but those choices are optional and vary by country.

  1. Open Waze and tap Report.
  2. Tap Police.
  3. If a subtype is available and accurately describes what you saw, choose Mobile camera, Hidden, or Other side.
  4. Tap Report, or wait a few seconds for Waze to submit it automatically.

The subtype choices can vary by country, so do not assume every option will appear in your app. Choose a subtype only when it fits the actual sighting; if none fits, the documented flow still begins with the Police category. Waze’s official instructions are on its Help page, “Report police sightings.”

Think of the report as a notice about what you saw, not a way to predict where police might be. Waze says to report incidents observed in real time and to place the report as close as possible to the actual incident. An old alert, a guess, or a report positioned well before or after the sighting can be misleading to drivers approaching the location.

When the report is submitted, Waze may send it automatically after a few seconds if you do not tap the Report button. The category and optional subtype are the key decisions in this flow. If the app presents a subtype that does not match your observation, do not choose it just to complete the form; use only what is available and accurate.

Report a road hazard

Choose the Hazard category for an obstruction or other problem on the road, rather than labeling it as a police sighting. Waze’s examples include roadworks, a car on the shoulder, a broken traffic light, a pothole, or an object in the road. These are choices within the hazard flow, not a promise that every interface or location will show exactly the same list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Waze and tap Report.
  2. Tap Hazard.
  3. Choose the closest matching type, such as Roadworks, Car on shoulder, Broken traffic light, Pothole, or Object.
  4. Tap Report, or wait a few seconds for automatic submission.

The exact categories and interface may differ by location or app release. Waze documents this flow on its Help page, “Report road hazards.” If you are unsure which type best describes the current problem, select a listed type only when it fits what you can actually see. The goal is to communicate the hazard accurately, not to force an approximate label.

As with a police report, submit a hazard only when it is current and put it as near the real location as possible. For example, if the issue is a pothole or object, the report should identify where that item is, rather than a nearby stretch of road that might cause another driver to expect the hazard in the wrong place. Waze’s guidance is about real-time observation and proximity; it does not establish a separate process for unverified or previously observed hazards.

Choose manual or voice reporting

Waze documents two ways to report: tap through the category menus, or use Talk to report where the feature is available. Manual reporting gives you the Police or Hazard category and any offered subtype to select. Voice reporting lets you describe what is happening in ordinary language. The choice is shaped by availability and by whether you can confidently identify the right category.

Route How it works Availability and best use
Manual report Tap Report, select Police or Hazard, then choose a subtype where offered. Waze documents manual Police and Hazard reports. Use it when you can identify the right category and safely interact with the app.
Talk to report Tap the Talk to report icon and describe the situation in ordinary language. Availability varies by country; Waze says it is not currently supported on Android Automotive. It can be useful where available if speaking is more practical than selecting a category.

The manual route is the clearest option when you know which category describes the incident and the relevant menu is available. The voice route is different: it accepts an everyday-language description, with Waze’s examples including heavy traffic and a police officer ahead. It is not universally available, so its absence does not mean you cannot use the documented manual reporting flow.

Set up Talk to report

  1. On your phone, open Settings > Voice and sound in Waze.
  2. Enable Talk to report.
  3. Allow microphone access if Waze requests it.
  4. Tap the Talk to report icon and describe what is happening. Waze’s examples include “I’m stuck in heavy traffic” and “There’s a police officer up ahead.”

Waze documents the feature on its Help page, “Talk to Waze to report what’s on the road.” Voice reporting availability is not universal, so use the manual route if the feature is absent. The setup instructions apply to a phone; Waze says Talk to report is not currently supported on Android Automotive. Do not assume that every country, device, or interface exposes the same voice option.

Voice reporting does not remove the need for an accurate, current report. Describe what you are observing rather than repeating an old alert or guessing about an incident. If you cannot confidently identify what is happening, do not turn uncertainty into a definite report. Whichever input route you use, Waze’s published guidance is to report what you see in real time and as close as possible to the actual location.

Make reports accurate and current

Waze advises reporting only incidents seen in real time and placing each report as close to the actual incident as possible. Do not report something based only on an old alert or an unverified assumption. This rule matters for both Police and Hazard reports: a current sighting at the right location is more useful than a vague or outdated warning.

A report’s display time varies according to other Wazers’ reactions. If an alert is no longer accurate, tap Not there to reduce the time it remains displayed. This is the documented way to signal that a report is stale; it should not be treated as a guaranteed immediate deletion. Waze says the amount of time a report stays visible depends on how other Wazers react, so the button is a way to influence its remaining display time, not a promise of instant removal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This also applies when you encounter an alert that appears to have expired in real life. If the police sighting or road problem is no longer there, use Not there on that report rather than adding another report about the same location. Waze’s instructions describe reactions as affecting how long an alert remains visible; they do not promise that one person’s reaction will instantly erase it for everyone.

Reporting limits and username visibility

Waze recommends limiting reports to once per minute to reduce spam and incorrect reports. Its published police-report guidance says suspected excessive reporting can result in temporary reporting blocks, with longer blocks after repeated flags. These are Waze’s stated policies, not a guarantee about how every individual case will be handled.

The practical implication is to avoid sending a stream of reports, particularly when you are uncertain whether an alert is already on the map or whether the incident is current. The once-per-minute recommendation is a limit on reporting frequency, not advice to report every minute. Only submit a report when there is something current and accurately located to report. If Waze temporarily blocks reporting, repeated attempts or speculative entries are not a substitute for following the service’s guidance.

Your username appears on a police report added to the map and is visible to other users, according to Waze Help. Consider that visibility before submitting a report. Waze’s statement specifically addresses police reports; do not assume that it makes broader promises about every report type or how the username appears in every interface.

What happens if your connection drops?

Waze’s police and hazard reporting instructions say that if the connection drops while you are reporting, the app saves the location and report and submits it after reconnection. That guidance is specific to a connection loss during reporting; it is not a promise that Waze reporting works offline.

Waze’s general “About Waze” guidance says that without a connection to Waze servers, users cannot report hazards, and Waze does not cache reports or map issues for later. In practice, do not rely on composing and storing a report while offline. Wait for a connection, then check whether the report was submitted before sending another one.

These statements describe different situations and should not be treated as an offline mode. A connection drop during an attempt may be handled by saving that location and report for submission after reconnection, according to the police and hazard help instructions. But Waze’s general guidance does not say that you can prepare any report at any time without a server connection and expect it to be stored. Once service returns, check the app’s status before trying again so you do not create a duplicate report.

Quick troubleshooting

  • You cannot find Police or Hazard: Open Report and look for the category there. Available subtypes can vary by country, and interfaces may differ by release.
  • The subtype you expect is missing: Use a subtype only when it is offered and fits what you observed; the police options are not available in every country.
  • You submitted an alert that is no longer accurate: Tap Not there on the report to reduce how long it remains visible.
  • A report did not go through after connectivity changed: Restore the connection and check Waze before submitting again. The reporting help pages describe submission after reconnection when a drop happens during reporting, but the general guidance does not support offline reporting.
  • You are temporarily blocked from reporting: Waze says temporary blocks can follow suspected excessive reporting. Follow the once-per-minute recommendation and avoid repeated or speculative reports.
  • Talk to report is unavailable: Its availability varies by country and it is not currently supported on Android Automotive. Use the manual category flow where available.

If the interface differs from these steps, keep the distinction between the two main categories in mind: Police is for a police sighting, while Hazard is for a road problem. The subtype menus may vary, and a voice option may not be present in every country or platform. Waze’s documented instructions do not guarantee identical labels or placement across every app release.

Safe reporting while driving

These reporting steps are for describing what you observe, not for interacting with the app at the expense of driving. Submit a report only when you can do so safely, or have a passenger handle it. Keep the report factual and near the actual location so other drivers are not directed by a stale or misplaced alert.

Before sending, make sure the report corresponds to something you have actually seen, choose the category that best matches it, and avoid repeated submissions. If using the voice route, it still needs to be available in your country and on your device. If using the manual route, the offered subtype should match the sighting; when it does not, do not select an inaccurate option merely because it is listed.

Does Waze reporting work offline?

Do not rely on offline reporting. Waze says that if the connection drops while you are reporting, the app saves the location and report and submits it after reconnection. Its general guidance also says you cannot report hazards without a connection to Waze servers and that it does not cache reports or map issues for later.

How often should I submit Waze reports?

Waze recommends limiting reports to once per minute to reduce spam and incorrect reports. It says suspected excessive reporting can lead to temporary reporting blocks, with longer blocks after repeated flags. Report only current, observed incidents rather than submitting repeatedly.

The Bottom Line

For a police sighting or speed trap, use Report > Police; for a road problem, use Report > Hazard and choose a matching type. Submit reports only for incidents you see in real time, place them near the actual location, and use Not there when an alert is no longer accurate. Talk to report is an alternative where supported, but it is not available everywhere.
