Short answer: You do not start Windows Startup Repair with one Command Prompt command. Enter the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), run Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair first, and use Command Prompt only for a repair branch that matches the problem. Verify the offline Windows volume before using SFC, CHKDSK, BOOTREC, or BCDBoot, because WinRE may not call it C:.
What “Startup Repair from Command Prompt” actually means
Windows does not have one magic startuprepair command. The supported workflow is to open the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), run the built-in Startup Repair tool first, and then use Command Prompt for a repair branch that matches the evidence: SFC for damaged protected system files, CHKDSK for file-system problems, or BCDBoot/BOOTREC for a damaged boot environment.
The most important precaution is to identify the offline Windows volume before running any command. In WinRE, the Windows installation that is normally C: may be assigned D:, E:, or another letter. The examples below use D: only after it has been verified as the Windows volume.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before repairing Windows
- Connect the computer to AC power. Do not begin a lengthy disk check on a nearly empty battery.
- If BitLocker is enabled, locate the recovery key before opening recovery tools. The key is a 48-digit credential and may be saved in a Microsoft account, a work or school account, a printout, or a USB device. Recovery tools may request it before allowing access to the Windows volume.
- If the files on the drive are important and the drive is disappearing, repeatedly reporting errors, unusually slow, or making abnormal noises, prioritize backup or professional recovery rather than repeatedly modifying boot data.
- Do not use DiskPart commands such as
clean, and do not format, delete, or recreate a partition as a first repair step. Those actions can destroy partition or volume information.
If you need to create recovery media on another computer, a blank USB flash drive for Windows recovery media is a task-enabling accessory, not a repair product. You create the recovery drive or Windows installation media with Microsoft’s tools, then boot from it and choose Repair my PC. A particular USB drive cannot guarantee that Windows will be repaired.
Startup Repair can address common problems involving damaged system files, boot configuration data, master boot record or boot-sector problems, incompatible drivers, and certain registry errors. It cannot repair a failed storage device, a missing BitLocker key, unrelated firmware problems, or every kind of Windows corruption.

Step 1: Enter the Windows Recovery Environment
Use whichever route is available:
- After failed starts: Allow Windows to enter Automatic Repair. Select Advanced options when the recovery screen appears.
- From Windows 11: Open Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now.
- From Windows 10: Open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now.
- From the sign-in or desktop power menu: Hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart.
- From recovery media: Boot from a previously created recovery drive or Windows installation USB. At the setup screen, select Repair my PC, not the option that starts a fresh installation.
On a computer that cannot reach Windows and does not enter Automatic Repair, installation media or a recovery drive is usually the practical way to reach WinRE. If the PC does not boot from the USB device, use the computer’s temporary boot-menu key or firmware setup to select the USB device; the exact key varies by manufacturer.
Step 2: Run automated Startup Repair first
- From WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
- Choose the Windows installation and user account if prompted. Enter the account password or BitLocker recovery key when requested.
- Select Restart when the scan finishes and test a normal boot.
Let the scan complete. A failure message means that the automated repair path did not resolve the detected condition; it does not prove that the installation is unrecoverable. Record the exact message before moving to Command Prompt.

Where available, Startup Repair records its work in %windir%System32LogFilesSrtSrtTrail.txt. Because WinRE drive letters can change, inspect the log under the verified offline Windows directory. For example, if the Windows directory is on D:, the likely path is:
type D:WindowsSystem32LogFilesSrtSrtTrail.txt
If that path is not present, do not assume that another drive is the Windows installation. First identify the volumes as described next.
Step 3: Open Command Prompt and find the offline Windows volume
In WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt. A command window opens in the recovery environment. The first job is to find the volume that contains the installation you want to repair.
Start with DiskPart’s non-destructive volume listing:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
diskpart
list volume
exit
Then inspect likely drive letters:
dir C:Windows
dir D:Windows
dir E:Windows
The correct volume normally contains a recognizable Windows directory and installation files. You can compare candidates with:
dir D:Users
dir D:Program Files
dir D:WindowsSystem32
Use the letter that contains the Windows installation you intend to repair in every later command. Do not copy the examples mechanically. The X: volume often represents the temporary WinRE environment, not the installed copy of Windows.

If the Windows volume has no drive letter
DiskPart can assign a temporary letter, but select the volume only after confirming its size, file system, and contents. For example:
diskpart
list volume
select volume <volume-number>
assign letter=W
exit
dir W:Windows
Replace <volume-number> with the verified volume number. Do not use clean, format, or a delete command. If the volume is BitLocker-locked, assigning a letter does not bypass encryption; you still need the recovery key or another authorized unlock method.

Repair damaged Windows system files with SFC
Use the System File Checker when the symptoms or Startup Repair results point to damaged protected Windows files. For an offline installation on D:, with the boot directory also on D:, the command is:
sfc /scannow /offbootdir=D: /offwindir=D:Windows
/offwindir identifies the offline Windows directory. /offbootdir identifies the volume containing the boot directory. The paths above are examples: replace both with the locations you verified in the previous step. If the boot files are on a separate system partition, do not blindly substitute the Windows letter for both paths.
SFC scans protected system files and attempts to replace incorrect versions with valid copies. It is not a complete bootloader repair utility. A successful SFC run does not repair a damaged EFI partition, an incorrect firmware setting, a corrupted partition table, or a failing disk.
If SFC cannot complete, note its exact message. A locked or inaccessible volume, a damaged file system, insufficient access to the Windows source, or deeper storage problems may need to be addressed before repeating the scan.

Use CHKDSK when the evidence points to file-system or volume errors—for example, inaccessible directories, repeated disk-related messages, or a boot failure associated with volume corruption. With the Windows volume confirmed as D::
chkdsk D: /f
The /f switch asks CHKDSK to repair file-system errors. Use the verified target volume, not automatically C:. CHKDSK checks file-system structures and can address logical volume errors; it does not repair a physically failing drive.

Do not interrupt CHKDSK once it is running unless there is a compelling safety reason. A long scan is not, by itself, evidence that the command is stuck. However, repeated errors, a volume that disappears, rapidly worsening behavior, or important files that are still inaccessible are reasons to stop experimenting and protect the data. A logical repair can leave an underlying storage failure unresolved.
Repair boot code only when it matches the firmware and partition layout
BOOTREC is most relevant to the BIOS/MBR boot-code path. Microsoft documents these commands for boot troubleshooting:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /scanos
bootrec /rebuildbcd
/fixmbrwrites boot code to the MBR path./fixbootrepairs the boot-sector path./scanossearches for Windows installations that are not currently represented in the boot configuration./rebuildbcdrebuilds or adds installations to the Boot Configuration Data store when prompted.
This is not a universal four-command recipe. On a UEFI/GPT computer, the key boot files are normally on an EFI System Partition, so repairing the EFI boot environment with BCDBoot is often the more appropriate branch. The firmware mode and partition layout—not the Windows version alone—determine which path applies.
If bootrec /fixboot returns an access error, do not respond by formatting a partition or applying an unverified command sequence. Recheck the firmware mode, identify the system partition, and consider the BCDBoot path below when the Windows directory is known.
Rebuild boot files with BCDBoot
BCDBoot takes boot-environment files from a known Windows directory and copies or configures them on the system partition. If the Windows directory has been verified as D:Windows, start with the basic form:
bcdboot D:Windows
This allows BCDBoot to use the system partition selected by the firmware and existing layout. If you need to target a specific partition, identify it first. On a UEFI/GPT installation, the EFI System Partition is commonly a small FAT32 partition. Confirm it from the volume listing and do not confuse it with a recovery partition or another small system volume.
After identifying the correct EFI System Partition, temporarily assign it a letter such as S::
diskpart
list volume
select volume <EFI-volume-number>
assign letter=S
exit
bcdboot D:Windows /s S: /f UEFI
The command uses D:Windows as the source, S: as the identified system partition, and explicitly targets UEFI firmware. The letter and volume number are examples. If you explicitly specify a firmware type with /f, BCDBoot requires /s as well.

For a BIOS/MBR layout, use the verified system partition and the BIOS option:
bcdboot D:Windows /s <system-partition-letter>: /f BIOS
BCDBoot also supports /f ALL for writing boot files for both firmware types, but using it simply because the layout is unknown is not a substitute for identifying the machine. If you are unsure whether the computer is configured for UEFI or legacy BIOS, check the firmware setup. DiskPart’s list disk can show whether a disk is marked GPT, but the partition style alone does not prove which firmware mode is currently configured.

Restart and validate the result
- Type
exitif you are still inside DiskPart, then close Command Prompt. - In WinRE, choose Continue to boot Windows, or select the restart option shown on screen.
- If Windows starts, confirm that the expected user profile, applications, and files are present.
- Back up important files before performing additional repair operations.
- Create or refresh recovery media while the computer is working, and confirm that the BitLocker recovery key is backed up somewhere you can access.
If Windows still loops into Automatic Repair, record the exact error, the firmware mode, the verified Windows drive letter, the system-partition letter, and each command’s output. That information is more useful than running every command again in a different order.

“Windows” is not found on C:, D:, or E:
The installation may have another letter, the volume may be locked by BitLocker, the partition may not be mounted, or the storage device may be damaged. Use diskpart and list volume to inspect all volumes. If the expected volume is absent or repeatedly disappears, treat that as a storage problem rather than a boot-configuration problem.
Startup Repair fails but the drive is readable
A failed automated repair does not rule out manual repair. Verify the Windows volume, then select SFC, CHKDSK, or BCDBoot according to the evidence. Do not run all commands indiscriminately.
SFC completes but Windows still will not boot
SFC may have repaired system files while leaving BCD data, EFI boot files, firmware settings, or the file system unchanged. Recheck the boot path and use BCDBoot or the BIOS/MBR-specific BOOTREC branch only when it matches the machine.
CHKDSK reports errors repeatedly
Repeated errors, inaccessible files, a disappearing volume, or worsening performance can indicate a failing storage device. Stop making changes if the data matters and seek backup or a professional data recovery service before destructive partition operations. CHKDSK is not a hardware repair tool.

BitLocker asks for a recovery key
Find the original 48-digit key through the Microsoft account, work or school account, printed copy, or USB storage location where it was saved. Do not promise access to the installation without it: Microsoft cannot recreate a key that was never saved or is no longer available.
When Command Prompt is not the right next step
Repeated failure after the relevant file-system, system-file, and boot-file repairs can point to a failing drive, a damaged Windows installation, a firmware or hardware issue, or an encryption/access problem. Before choosing a reset or reinstall, preserve personal data if possible.
WinRE also includes System Restore, System Image Recovery, Uninstall Updates, Reset this PC, and recovery through Windows installation media. These are different recovery paths with different effects on applications and files. Read each option carefully rather than assuming that every recovery choice is nondestructive.
One lifecycle note matters for version planning: Microsoft’s stated Windows 10 support end date was October 14, 2025. These WinRE steps also apply to Windows 11, but Windows 10 users should consider moving to a supported Windows release after recovering the machine, where the hardware and licensing permit it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a single Command Prompt command called Startup Repair?
No. Startup Repair is a WinRE recovery tool with a graphical menu. Command Prompt is used afterward for manual repairs such as offline SFC, CHKDSK, BOOTREC, or BCDBoot.
Why is my Windows drive not C: in Command Prompt?
No. WinRE can assign the Windows installation a different letter, such as D: or E:. Use DiskPart’s list of volumes and confirm the installation with commands such as dir D:Windows before running repair commands.
Does SFC repair the Windows bootloader?
No. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. It does not generally rebuild BCD data, repair an EFI partition, correct firmware settings, or fix a failing drive.
Can Command Prompt bypass a missing BitLocker recovery key?
No. BitLocker encryption is not bypassed by Startup Repair, SFC, CHKDSK, or BCDBoot. If WinRE requests the recovery key, you need the original 48-digit key from its saved location.
Should I run all four BOOTREC commands on every Windows 10 or 11 computer?
Only when it matches the computer’s boot path. BOOTREC is particularly relevant to BIOS/MBR boot-code problems. UEFI/GPT systems often require identifying the EFI System Partition and rebuilding boot files with BCDBoot instead.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Enter WinRE, run Startup Repair once, then open Command Prompt only after verifying the offline Windows drive letter. Use offline SFC for protected-file corruption, CHKDSK for file-system errors, and BCDBoot or BOOTREC only when the firmware and partition layout justify them. Keep the BitLocker key available, avoid DiskPart’s destructive commands, and protect data before escalating.
