To uninstall an AI assistant on Linux, use the same tool that installed it: App Center for graphical installs, APT or another distribution package manager for native packages, Flatpak for Flatpaks, Docker or Podman for containers, and uv, Conda, or a virtual-environment directory for Python installs. Removing the program does not necessarily remove chats, settings, uploaded files, downloaded models, or caches. Stop the assistant first, identify its installation method, remove it with the matching command, then inspect its documented data directory or container volume before deciding what to erase.
What is the safest way to remove an AI assistant from Linux?
The safest sequence is to separate software removal from data deletion. Uninstalling a package or container stops managing the application, but persistent data often lives in your home directory, a Docker volume, or a custom directory such as DATA_DIR.
- Close the desktop app and stop its server or container. Do not delete files while a process is still writing chats or databases.

- Back up anything you need. Chats, settings, uploads, models, and workspace artifacts may be stored separately from the executable.
- Delete persistent data only after checking the path. Remove a volume, home-directory state folder, cache, or custom data directory only when you accept the data loss.
A reboot or logout is usually needed only when an autostart process or user service continues to launch the assistant after removal.
How do I remove an AI app from Ubuntu App Center?
Ubuntu App Center can remove applications installed as either Snap packages or Debian packages. This is the simplest option when the application appears in the graphical catalog.

Ubuntu warns that an application required by another application may be removed with it after you confirm. Review the confirmation dialog rather than approving automatically. App Center removal also does not guarantee that user-level chat databases, configuration, uploads, or caches in your home directory are gone; inspect the assistant’s own data-location documentation before manually deleting anything.
What command removes an AI assistant installed with APT or a deb package?
For an APT-managed package, use apt remove. Add --purge when you also want the package’s system configuration files removed.
sudo apt remove package-name
sudo apt remove --purge package-nameThe first command removes the package while retaining package configuration. The second removes that configuration as well. Replace package-name with the actual package name, not the display name shown in a launcher.
Purging is not the same as wiping your personal data. User-specific files under /home/ are commonly retained when a package is removed. Find the application’s documented state directory and back it up before deleting it; do not broadly remove an entire home-directory tree just because the package is gone.
When should I use remove versus purge?

docker compose downTo remove the Compose services and the named volume at the same time, use:
docker compose down -vThe -v option deletes the volume. That can erase stored chats, settings, accounts, and other application data. Back up the volume first if any history or configuration matters. Running docker compose down without -v is the appropriate choice when you are uninstalling the application but may return to the data later.
Why does Open WebUI still have my chats after the container is gone?
Docker separates the container (the application process) from its named volume (persistent storage). Removing the container leaves the volume intentionally, so a later deployment can reconnect to the same chats and settings. Delete the volume only after confirming that no required data remains.

For a Podman container named openwebui, force-remove the running container, then optionally remove its image and volume.

The volume command is also optional and is the destructive step: it removes persistent chats and settings stored in that volume. Back up the data or confirm that it is disposable before running it. If your container or volume has a different name, substitute that name rather than deleting every Podman volume on the system.

Python virtual environment
Stop the Open WebUI server, leave the environment if it is active, and delete the virtual-environment directory:
rm -rf venvChange venv to the directory you actually used. This removes the environment’s interpreter and packages, not a separately configured data directory.
What happens to Open WebUI data after a Python uninstall?
Open WebUI can keep data outside the Python environment. When no custom location was configured, its usual data directory is ~/.open-webui. If you set DATA_DIR, that custom directory must be deleted separately when you want a complete wipe. Back up the directory before removing it because it can contain chats, settings, and other persistent state.

How do I remove Open WebUI’s Computer component and its files?
The Computer component is a separate Python package and data set. Uninstall the package with pip:
pip uninstall cptrFor complete removal, delete the component’s account and settings directory and each workspace’s component directory:
rm -rf ~/.cptr
rm -rf /path/to/workspace/.cptr~/.cptr can contain accounts, settings, and uploads. A workspace’s .cptr/ directory can contain chats and artifacts. The cleanup does not delete other project files in the workspace, but verify the path carefully before using rm -rf.

How do I remove an AI assistant installed as an AppImage?
An AppImage is usually a file you downloaded rather than a package registered with APT or Flatpak. Close the assistant, then delete that AppImage file. If you created a desktop shortcut, autostart entry, or user service manually, remove those separately after confirming they belong to the assistant.
Deleting the executable does not automatically delete configuration, downloaded models, logs, or chats stored elsewhere. Check the application’s own documentation for those locations before cleaning your home directory.

How do I delete chats, settings, uploads, models, and caches completely?
Data cleanup is a separate decision from uninstalling the executable. Start by identifying the exact storage location and deciding whether you need an export or backup. Then stop the service and remove only the folders or volumes belonging to that assistant.
