To read an ASX-listed biotech’s cash position, separate four figures in its Appendix 4C: cash and cash equivalents at quarter end, quarterly operating cash flow, unused finance facilities, and the estimated quarters of funding available. The runway figure is a simple estimate based on the reported quarter—not a promise that funding will last that long.
Where to find the figures in an Appendix 4C
In Appendix 4C, item 8 presents estimated cash available for future operating activities. Read its line items separately rather than treating them as interchangeable:
- Cash and cash equivalents at quarter end: the reported balance on the reporting date.
- Unused finance facilities available at quarter end: funding capacity separate from cash. Read the company’s description of any terms or conditions before treating it as spendable.
- Total available funding: the form’s sum of cash and unused facilities.
- Net cash from/(used in) operating activities: the quarter’s operating cash flow. When this is an outflow, investors often call it “burn.”
- Estimated quarters of funding available: a template calculation based on total available funding and operating cash use.
The ASX form and its instructions are available on the ASX Supervision downloads page.

How the runway estimate is calculated
When net operating cash flow is negative, divide total available funding by the absolute amount of that quarter’s operating cash outflow:
#1 Best Overall
Estimated funding quarters = total available funding ÷ quarterly net operating cash outflow
For example, if an Appendix 4C reports $30 million in total available funding and $10 million of net operating cash outflow for the quarter, the calculation gives three quarters. This is an illustration of the form’s arithmetic, not a forecast for any particular company. The official Appendix 4C says that when an entity reports positive net operating cash flow in item 1.9, it should answer “N/A” for item 8.5. ASX Appendix 4C instructions

What “burn” includes—and what it does not
For clarity, use the Appendix 4C line for net cash from or used in operating activities when discussing operating burn. Keep it distinct from investing and financing cash flows, which are reported separately. The quarter-end cash balance is a point-in-time amount; operating cash flow covers a period. Total available funding may include an undrawn facility, while cash balance does not.
These differences matter when comparing companies or quarters. An estimate that includes an undrawn facility is not directly comparable to cash on hand alone, and a quarter’s operating outflow should not be mistaken for a change in cash caused by all activities.

Why the runway figure is not a forecast
The template’s estimate applies the reported quarter’s operating cash outflow to the funding available at quarter end. It does not establish when financing will close, whether a facility can be drawn without conditions, or whether future receipts and payments will match the quarter. Clinical-trial activity, manufacturing costs, working capital and the timing of receipts and payments can all affect later cash flows; the form’s ratio does not predict those changes.
For company-specific context, read the accompanying activities report, compare earlier quarterly reports, inspect the stated facility terms, and check subsequent company announcements before making a forward-looking claim.

How to compare cash position across quarters or companies
Use the same reporting period and currency where possible. Compare the same measures in each report:

- Cash and cash equivalents at quarter end.
- Unused facilities available at quarter end, including stated conditions.
- Net operating cash flow for the quarter.
- Total available funding and estimated funding quarters.
- The direction of these figures across successive reports.
Look at the inputs as well as the runway ratio: a change in available facilities or a particularly high or low operating outflow can move the estimate even when the underlying business outlook has not been established by that calculation.
