If your printer supports AirPrint, printing from an iPhone usually takes only a few taps: connect the printer and iPhone to the same local network, open the photo or document, tap Share, More, or an Actions Menu, choose Print, select the printer, and tap Print.
Before you start, make sure the printer is powered on and ready, has paper and ink or toner, and supports AirPrint. A printer having Wi-Fi does not necessarily mean that it supports AirPrint.
The fastest way to print from an iPhone with AirPrint
AirPrint is Apple’s built-in, driverless printing technology. On a compatible printer, you normally do not install a driver, add the printer in iPhone Settings, or install a separate printing app.
- Turn on the printer and connect it to your home, office, or school network.
- Connect your iPhone to the same Wi-Fi network. An Ethernet-connected printer can also work if it is on the same local network as the iPhone.
- Open the item you want to print. This could be a photo, PDF, email, webpage, Pages document, or image.
- Tap Share, More, Reply, or an Actions Menu, depending on the app.
- Tap Print. If you do not see it, swipe up in the share sheet to reveal more actions.
- Tap No Printer Selected.
- Choose your AirPrint printer from the list.
- Set the available options, such as copies or a page range.
- Tap Print in the upper-right corner.
Apple documents this workflow for current iPhone software, but menu names and available print controls can differ by iOS version, app, printer model, region, and document type. As of August 10, 2026, Apple lists iOS 26.6 as the latest iOS release.

AirPrint works if: the exact printer model supports AirPrint, the printer and iPhone can communicate on the same local network, and the printer is powered on and ready.
What AirPrint is—and what it is not
AirPrint lets iPhone and other Apple devices send print jobs to compatible printers without installing traditional printer drivers. It is integrated into iPhone apps that support printing, including Apple’s Photos, Mail, and Safari apps. Many third-party apps support it as well. See Apple’s AirPrint overview for the technology details.
Wireless printer and AirPrint printer are not interchangeable terms. A printer can connect to Wi-Fi but lack AirPrint support. In that case, you may need the printer maker’s official iPhone app, Wi-Fi Direct, or a computer-based workaround.
How to check whether your printer supports AirPrint
- Find the printer’s exact model number. It is usually printed on the front or top of the printer, on a label, or in the printer’s settings.
- Search Apple’s AirPrint printer information by brand and model.
- Check the manufacturer’s specifications or support page for that exact model.
- Confirm any regional or model-specific exceptions. Do not assume that every printer in a product family supports AirPrint.
Apple says its AirPrint printer information is supplied by manufacturers and updated periodically. If the model is not listed, Apple recommends checking with the manufacturer. Canon, for example, provides model-specific AirPrint guidance separately from its Canon PRINT app information.
What to prepare before printing
- The printer is turned on and not showing a paper, ink, toner, cover, or network error.
- Paper is loaded in the correct tray and is the size expected by the print job.
- There is enough ink or toner for the job.
- The printer is connected to the network, either over Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- The iPhone is connected to the same local network. The network name should match when both devices use Wi-Fi.
- The printer supports AirPrint, or the manufacturer’s recommended app is installed.
- If you are using a manufacturer app, that app has permission to access the local network.
AirPrint is generally local-network printing. The iPhone does not need an internet connection merely to send a normal AirPrint job to a printer on the same reachable network, although cloud-printing features and some manufacturer-app functions may require internet access.
How to print different types of content
Print one photo
- Open Photos.
- Open the photo.
- Tap Share.
- Tap Print. You may need to swipe up first.
- Select the printer, adjust the available options, and tap Print.
This is Apple’s documented single-photo printing path.
Print several photos at once
- Open Photos.
- Open Library or another collection.
- Tap Select.
- Choose the photos.
- Tap Share, then Print.
- Choose the printer and tap Print.
Apple supports printing selected photos together, although the layout and photo controls available on the print screen vary by printer and iOS version.

Print a webpage from Safari
- Open the webpage in Safari.
- Tap Share.
- Tap Print, scrolling up in the share sheet if necessary.
- Select the printer, choose the page range or other available settings, and tap Print.
A printed webpage may not look exactly like it does on the screen. Advertisements, navigation controls, responsive layouts, and automatic page breaks can change the result. If Safari offers a Reader or simplified view for the page, using it can reduce clutter and improve the layout, but it is not a guarantee of a particular printed design.
Print an email or an email attachment
In Mail, open the message and use the app’s Reply, More, or Actions menu, then choose Print. For an attachment, open the attachment first and use its Share or Actions menu if that produces a better print preview. Not every email or document app exposes the same command.
Print a file or image saved in Files
Open Files, select the file, and use the Share or Actions menu to look for Print. If the file type or the app does not offer printing, open or share it to Preview, another compatible PDF viewer, or the manufacturer’s app.
Print a Pages document
- Open the document in Pages.
- Tap More in the toolbar.
- Tap Print.
- Tap Printer if no printer is selected.
- Choose the AirPrint printer.
- Set the page range, number of copies, and other available options.
- Tap Print.
Pages can expose document-specific options, including whether to include comments, backgrounds, or smart annotations. It also supports printing envelopes. The Pages for iPhone guide lists the available controls.
Which iPhone print settings can you use?
The print screen commonly provides some combination of these options:
- Number of copies.
- All pages, a page range, or selected pages.
- Portrait or landscape orientation.
- Color or black-and-white printing, where supported.
- Two-sided or duplex printing, where supported.
- Paper size or media type, where supported.
AirPrint can communicate printer capabilities, but the controls shown depend on the printer, the app, the selected document, and the printer’s firmware. You may not see controls for:
- Borderless printing.
- Scaling, such as Fit to Page or Fill Page.
- Paper-tray selection.
- Stapling, binding, hole punching, or other finishing features.
- Advanced color-management settings.
- Photo layouts, collages, or multiple images per sheet.
Do not assume that AirPrint always includes a fit-to-page, fill-page, borderless, or duplex option. For an important document, preview the page thumbnails when available and print one test page first. Check the margins, orientation, scaling, photo crop, paper size, and color before sending a long job.

Phone photos and printer paper often have different aspect ratios. If the image does not match the paper, the printer or app may add borders, scale the image, or crop part of it. The available behavior depends on the app and printer. If the result matters, crop the image to the paper’s aspect ratio before printing or use the manufacturer’s app if it provides more layout choices.

How to view or cancel an iPhone print job
When a print job is active, iPhone may show Print Center in the App Switcher. To inspect or cancel the queue:
- Open the App Switcher. On an iPhone with Face ID, swipe up from the bottom and pause. On an iPhone with a Home button, double-click the Home button.
- Tap Print Center.
- Select the print job.
- Tap Cancel Printing.
The Print Center icon can display a badge for queued documents. Cancellation is not guaranteed if the printer has already received the job or has already printed it. If the printer has its own queue or control panel, you may also need to cancel the job there.
What to do when Print is missing
A missing Print command usually means the action is hidden or the app does not support printing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Swipe up in the share sheet. Print may be below the actions initially visible on screen.
- Check the app. Apple notes that not every app supports printing. Look in the app’s help or user guide if the command is absent.
- Try the same content in another app. For example, test Photos, Safari, Preview, or Files.
- Export the content. Save or share it as a PDF or image, then print from Preview or another app that supports printing.
- Use the app’s own print or export tool. Proprietary content, such as a ticket or design project, may need to be exported through the service’s own workflow.
Some apps deliberately restrict printing for security, licensing, or content-protection reasons. There may be no iPhone setting that can add a Print action to an app that does not provide one.
What to do when the printer does not appear
Work through these checks in order. The first few solve most discovery problems without changing advanced settings.
- Verify the exact model’s AirPrint support. A nearby model with a similar name may support AirPrint while yours does not.
- Check that the printer is ready. Clear paper, ink, toner, cover, and network errors. Wake it if it is asleep.
- Check the network name. If both devices use Wi-Fi, confirm that the iPhone and printer are on the same network—not two networks with similar names.
- Avoid guest-network isolation. Guest Wi-Fi often prevents devices from communicating with one another. The same problem can occur when a router or access point uses client isolation or a privacy separator.
- Check mesh and access-point configuration. A phone connected through one isolated access point may not be able to discover a printer connected through another. The network should allow local-device communication.
- Restart the printer, router, and iPhone. Wait for the printer to finish reconnecting before trying again.
- Install available updates. Update the printer’s firmware and iPhone software when updates are available.
- Try a built-in Apple app. Test a simple photo in Photos or a webpage in Safari. This helps distinguish an app problem from a network or printer problem.
- Use the manufacturer app or Wi-Fi Direct. These are the practical alternatives when the model is not AirPrint-compatible or network discovery continues to fail.
AirPrint discovery uses local-network communication. Manufacturer troubleshooting documentation commonly identifies different access points, client isolation, blocked Bonjour or mDNS discovery, and direct USB-only connections as possible reasons a printer is not found. These are network-specific causes, not universal explanations for every failure. Brother’s AirPrint discovery troubleshooting is one example.
What to do when a printer app cannot find the printer
A manufacturer app needs permission to browse devices on your local network. If you denied the request during setup, enable it here:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Tap Local Network.
- Turn on access for the printer app.
Apple explains local-network permissions and distinguishes app access from system services such as AirPrint. Denying a third-party app permission does not necessarily disable AirPrint itself. Also confirm that the app is configured for the exact printer model and that the phone and printer are on a reachable local network.

How to print without AirPrint
Use the printer manufacturer’s official app
This is usually the best option for a non-AirPrint printer, and it can provide functions AirPrint may not expose, such as scanning, ink or toner status, proprietary photo layouts, printer setup, Wi-Fi Direct, or cloud features. Do not assume one app works with every printer from the same brand; check compatibility for the exact model.
- Visit the printer manufacturer’s official support page and search for the exact model.
- Install the recommended iPhone app from the App Store.
- Complete the printer setup or choose the option to add a printer.
- Allow local-network access when the app requests it.
- Select a photo, document, or scan inside the app, or use the iPhone share sheet if the app supports that workflow.
- Choose the available print settings and send the job.
Examples of manufacturer tools include:
- Canon PRINT: Canon describes its app as a companion for compatible Canon printers. Depending on the model and region, it can help with setup, printing, scanning, consumables, and cloud functions. See Canon’s app page.
- Epson Smart Panel: Epson documents iPhone printing through Smart Panel and generally requires the iPhone and Epson product to be on the same wireless network. Features vary by product. See Epson’s Smart Panel instructions.
- Brother Mobile Connect: Brother supports iOS devices through Mobile Connect on compatible models. Depending on the printer, the phone may use the same Wi-Fi network or Wi-Fi Direct. See Brother’s Mobile Connect support information.
Use Wi-Fi Direct
Wi-Fi Direct allows a compatible printer to create a direct wireless network instead of using your normal router. It can be useful while traveling or when there is no usable home or office network. The exact labels, password, supported file types, and whether you use AirPrint or the manufacturer app are model-specific.
- Enable Wi-Fi Direct on the printer.
- Find the printer’s Wi-Fi Direct network name and password on the printer screen, information sheet, or manual.
- On the iPhone, open Settings > Wi-Fi.
- Join the printer’s direct network.
- Open the content you want to print.
- Choose Share or an Actions Menu, then Print, or print through the manufacturer’s app.
- Select the printer and send the job.
- Reconnect the iPhone to its normal Wi-Fi network afterward.
HP documents this general approach for supported printers and notes that the iPhone may need to select AirPrint after joining the printer’s direct network. See HP’s Wi-Fi Direct instructions.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Wi-Fi Direct does not normally require the usual router or an internet connection, but the iPhone may lose internet access while it is connected directly to the printer. Leaving a direct network enabled can also make the printer visible to nearby devices, so disable it or change its credentials according to the manufacturer’s guidance when finished.
Use a Mac or PC as an intermediary
For an old USB-only printer, print from a Mac or PC that has the printer’s driver and software installed. A computer may also provide a manufacturer-supported print server or bridge, but this depends on the printer and operating system.
Apple’s AirPrint information treats USB-only printers as supporting driverless printing or scanning from a Mac through USB—not as ordinary iPhone AirPrint printers. There is no general native workflow equivalent to plugging a USB printer directly into an iPhone. A model-specific app, accessory, or print-server solution may be an exception, so check the manufacturer’s documentation.
Other practical choices for an urgent job include a print shop or library. Consider the privacy of the document, upload requirements, account access, and whether files are retained on a shared computer or cloud service.
Do not use old Google Cloud Print instructions
Google discontinued Cloud Print after December 31, 2020. Pages that tell you to set up Google Cloud Print are outdated; use AirPrint, the manufacturer’s current app, Wi-Fi Direct, or a computer-based method instead. See Google’s discontinuation notice.

AirPrint, manufacturer apps, and Wi-Fi Direct compared
| Method | Best for | Advantages | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| AirPrint | Compatible home and office printers | No driver or extra app; integrated into the share sheet; simple local printing | Requires AirPrint and successful network discovery; settings vary |
| Manufacturer app | Non-AirPrint models, scanning, setup, or advanced printer features | May support proprietary layouts, consumables, scanning, Wi-Fi Direct, or cloud services | Requires an app and permissions; features vary by model; an account or internet may be required for some functions |
| Wi-Fi Direct | Travel or no-router situations | Connects directly to the printer and may work without internet | Model-specific; switching Wi-Fi can interrupt internet access; supported formats and steps vary |
| Mac or PC intermediary | Legacy USB or unsupported printers | Uses the computer’s normal drivers and printer software | Requires a powered-on computer and additional setup |
| Print shop or library | Urgent jobs or no compatible printer | No home setup required | May cost money and raises document privacy and handling concerns |
Privacy and security considerations
- Review local-network permissions. A manufacturer app needs this permission to discover and communicate with a printer on your network. You can manage it under Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network.
- Distinguish local printing from cloud printing. AirPrint to a reachable local printer is different from a manufacturer feature that sends a document through a cloud service. Cloud options may require an account, internet access, or document processing outside your home.
- Check the app’s privacy information. Do not assume every manufacturer app uploads every document, but review the app’s current privacy details and the specific feature you choose.
- Be careful with shared printers. A home printer may retain jobs temporarily, and an office, hotel, library, or print-shop printer may be accessible to other people. Avoid sending sensitive documents to a public printer unless you understand the controls.
- Clean up copies. If you export a document to a third-party app or cloud storage to print it, remove the extra copy afterward when appropriate.
- Secure Wi-Fi Direct. Turn it off or follow the manufacturer’s advice for changing its password when you no longer need a direct connection.
Common problems and the quickest recovery
| Symptom | Likely causes | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| No Print option | The action is hidden or the app does not support printing | Swipe up in the share sheet; try Photos, Safari, Preview, or Files; export the content as a PDF or image |
| No printer listed | Unsupported model, wrong network, sleeping printer, guest isolation, or blocked local discovery | Verify the exact model; check the network; wake or restart the printer; avoid guest Wi-Fi; try the manufacturer app or Wi-Fi Direct |
| The printer appears but the job fails | Printer error, paper mismatch, empty supplies, stale queue, or firmware/network problem | Check the printer display, paper, ink or toner; cancel the queue; restart the printer and router; update firmware |
| The manufacturer app cannot find the printer | Local-network permission was denied or the app and printer are on different networks | Enable Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network; re-add the printer in the app |
| The photo is cropped or has borders | The photo and paper have different aspect ratios or the app lacks layout controls | Crop the photo before printing, choose a suitable paper/layout, or try the manufacturer app |
| Only some settings are available | The app or printer does not expose advanced capabilities through AirPrint | Use the manufacturer app or the printer’s control panel for model-specific features |
| The job is duplicated | Print was tapped repeatedly or an earlier job remained queued | Check Print Center and the printer’s own queue before sending the job again |
| Nothing happens after tapping Print | The printer is offline, still waking, undiscovered, or the queue is stuck | Wait briefly, inspect the printer, cancel the job if possible, and restart the printer and network equipment |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I print from an iPhone without Wi-Fi?
Yes, in some situations. A printer connected by Ethernet can receive AirPrint jobs over the same local network as the iPhone, and a compatible printer may support Wi-Fi Direct. Cellular data alone does not provide ordinary local AirPrint discovery. Wi-Fi Direct is model-specific and may temporarily disconnect the iPhone from the internet.
Does AirPrint require an internet connection?
Not for a normal local AirPrint job when the iPhone and printer can communicate on the same local network. Internet access may still be required by a manufacturer’s cloud-printing feature, remote printing service, or app setup process.
Can I print to a USB printer from an iPhone?
There is no general native iPhone-to-USB-printer AirPrint workflow. For a USB-only printer, use a Mac or PC, a manufacturer-supported print server or bridge, or a model-specific iPhone app or accessory if one is documented.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I print from an iPhone over Bluetooth?
Sometimes, but Bluetooth printing is printer- and app-specific. Bluetooth support does not make a printer AirPrint-compatible, so use the manufacturer’s official app and instructions if the model explicitly supports Bluetooth printing.
Why can’t I see my AirPrint printer?
First verify AirPrint support for the exact model, then check that the printer is on and ready and that the iPhone and printer are on the same reachable local network. Guest Wi-Fi, client isolation, separate access points, blocked Bonjour or mDNS discovery, and a printer that has not finished reconnecting can prevent discovery. Restarting the printer, router, and iPhone is a useful next step.
Do I need an app for an HP, Canon, Epson, or Brother printer?
Not if the exact model supports AirPrint and is reachable on the local network. If it does not support AirPrint, or if you need scanning, consumable status, Wi-Fi Direct, cloud features, or advanced layouts, install the manufacturer’s app recommended for that model. Compatibility varies within each brand.
How do I print a webpage without advertisements?
Safari’s Reader or simplified view may produce a less cluttered page when that option is available. It changes the layout rather than guaranteeing an ad-free or perfectly paginated printout. Preview the result and check page breaks before printing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan I print double-sided from an iPhone?
Possibly. Two-sided printing appears only when the printer and the app expose that capability through AirPrint. If the option is missing, the manufacturer’s app or the printer’s control panel may provide it.
Why are my iPhone photos cropped when I print them?
The photo’s aspect ratio may not match the paper’s aspect ratio. Depending on the printer and app, the image may be cropped, scaled, or printed with borders. Crop the photo before printing or use a manufacturer app with additional photo-layout controls.
How do I cancel an iPhone print job?
Open the App Switcher, tap Print Center, select the job, and tap Cancel Printing. Cancellation may not stop a job that the printer has already received or completed; you may also need to clear the printer’s own queue.
The Bottom Line
For an AirPrint-compatible printer, use Share or Actions > Print > No Printer Selected > choose the printer > Print. If the printer is missing, verify the exact model and local network before restarting the devices. If it does not support AirPrint, use the manufacturer’s official app, Wi-Fi Direct, or a Mac or PC rather than assuming every wireless, USB, or Bluetooth printer works natively with iPhone.
