Java Edition and Bedrock Edition cannot join the same official Realm or shared world. To play together, put everyone on Bedrock, put everyone on Java, or run a third-party Java server that accepts Bedrock connections through Geyser (and usually Floodgate). The best option depends on which devices your group owns, how much setup you want, and whether you need console players included.
This guide covers the current options, Realms limits and listed prices, mixed-edition server setup, console requirements, and the fixes for the problems that stop friends connecting.
Java and Bedrock use separate multiplayer networks
Minecraft is sold in two editions with different networking systems. A Java player cannot enter a Bedrock Realm, and a Bedrock player cannot enter a Java Realm. The editions also cannot load one another’s official hosted worlds directly.

Windows is the common source of confusion because it can run either edition. A Windows player must launch the same edition as the friends they want to join. Owning Minecraft on Windows does not make one copy of a Java world compatible with Bedrock.

The three ways to play together
Option 1: Everyone uses Bedrock
This is the simplest route when the group includes Xbox, PlayStation, Switch or mobile players. Bedrock supports multiplayer across the listed console, mobile, ChromeOS and Windows platforms, provided everyone is using Bedrock.
- Best for: mixed device groups and players who want the least technical work.
- Hosting: a Bedrock Realm or another Bedrock-compatible multiplayer world.
- Trade-off: Java-only features, mods and Java servers are not available in the Bedrock session.
Option 2: Everyone uses Java
Java is the straightforward choice when every player is on Windows, Linux or macOS and wants Java’s server and mod ecosystem. Java Realms supports Java players across those computer platforms, but it does not extend to consoles, phones or the Bedrock edition of Windows.
- Best for: computer-only groups that all own Java Edition.
- Hosting: Java Realms or a Java server.
- Trade-off: console and mobile friends cannot connect natively.
Option 3: Use a mixed-edition crossplay server
A Java server can accept Bedrock connections through Geyser, a third-party translation layer. Floodgate is commonly added so Bedrock players can authenticate with their Microsoft accounts without owning a separate Java account for the server. This is not a Mojang Realms feature; it is a community-server arrangement that requires administration and can become unavailable when the server or its software is offline.

- Best for: groups that must combine Java PC players with Bedrock console, mobile or Windows players.
- Hosting: a Java server configured with Geyser; Floodgate is optional but commonly used for Bedrock account login.
- Trade-off: more setup, more maintenance and less predictable availability than Realms.
Using Bedrock Realms with friends
Bedrock Realms is the easiest official option for a group that has standardized on Bedrock. The owner creates the Realm, chooses its player capacity, and invites the other Bedrock players. The Realm remains hosted by the service rather than on the owner’s console or phone.
Choose the right Bedrock plan

The allowance is the number of players who can play at once, not a promise that only that many people may ever be invited. If your group regularly has more than three people online together, the basic plan is not sufficient.
Setup sequence
- Confirm that every participant owns or can launch Bedrock Edition. On a Windows computer, check the edition selected in the Minecraft launcher before creating the world.
- From the Bedrock Play screen, choose the control for creating a Realm and select either the basic plan or Realms Plus. Menu wording can vary slightly by platform and account region.
- Create a new world or place an existing Bedrock world into the Realm when the creation flow offers that choice.
- Open the Realm’s member or player-management screen and invite each friend using the account identity requested by Minecraft.
- Have each invited player open the Play screen, select the Friends or Realms area, and join when the Realm appears.
Console participants also need the platform’s active online multiplayer subscription. Secondary platform guides identify Nintendo Switch Online, PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass as examples; the required tier can change, so check the console maker’s current online-play rules.

Using Java Realms with computer players
Java Realms is intended for Java Edition on Windows, Linux and macOS. The listed allowance is you plus 10 other players, or 11 players total. It does not create a bridge to Bedrock Realms or to console and mobile Bedrock clients.
Setup sequence
- Make sure every participant launches Java Edition, not Bedrock Edition for Windows.
- Create or subscribe to a Java Realm from the Java Edition multiplayer or Realms screen.
- Use the Realm’s player-management controls to add the friends who should have access.
- Ask each invited player to open Java Edition, select the Realms list, and join the invitation.
Java Realms pricing was not stated in the supplied Minecraft.net summary. Check the current official Realms page for the price shown in your account region before buying.
How mixed Java–Bedrock crossplay works with Geyser
Geyser does not merge the two editions into one official Realm. Instead, it translates Bedrock network traffic so a Bedrock client can talk to a Java server. The Java server remains the host; Bedrock players connect to its Bedrock listener.

What you need
- A reachable Java server that you administer or that a server provider allows you to configure.
- Geyser installed and configured for that server or its proxy.
- Floodgate if you want Bedrock players to use Microsoft-account authentication through the common Floodgate setup.
- The server address and the Bedrock connection port. Port 19132 is commonly used for Bedrock, but the administrator must provide the actual port assigned to that server.
- Players on compatible, up-to-date Java or Bedrock clients. Crossplay software availability can change, so confirm that the particular server is online before planning an event around it.
Administrator setup sequence
- Choose or create the Java server that will hold the world. Decide who will administer updates, backups, permissions and moderation.
- Install the Geyser component supported by that server’s software or proxy, then enter the Java server’s connection details in Geyser’s configuration.
- Add Floodgate when the server should accept Bedrock players through the Microsoft-account login method it provides. Follow the version-specific installation instructions supplied with the server software.
- Enable the Bedrock listener and record the address and port shown in the configuration. If the server uses a non-default port, give that exact value to console and mobile players.
- Start the server and test from both editions. A Java player uses the normal Java server address; a Bedrock player enters the server address and the Bedrock port in the Bedrock server-add screen.
- Keep the Java server, Geyser and Floodgate versions compatible. Schedule backups before updates and tell players when maintenance will make the server unavailable.
What players do on Bedrock
- Open Bedrock Edition and choose the multiplayer screen.
- Use the option to add an external server rather than looking for a Java Realm.
- Enter the address supplied by the administrator and the supplied Bedrock port, commonly 19132.
- Save the entry and connect after the administrator confirms that the Java server is running.
Geyser servers can behave differently from native Bedrock or Java worlds. Certain mechanics, commands, resource packs or account-permission assumptions may not translate perfectly. Treat the server as a separately maintained community service rather than as an official Realms replacement.

Common group scenarios
Xbox and a Windows PC
Use Bedrock on both devices. The Xbox player is already on Bedrock; the Windows player must launch Bedrock rather than Java. A Bedrock Realm can then host the group, subject to the Realm plan and the Xbox player’s online subscription.
PlayStation or Switch and a Windows PC
Again, use Bedrock on every device for the official, low-maintenance route. Each console player needs the applicable active online subscription. If the Windows player insists on Java, use a Geyser-enabled Java server instead of a Realm.

Linux or macOS computer with console friends
Linux and macOS are listed as Java platforms, while the console friends are Bedrock players. The group therefore needs either a Bedrock-capable device for the computer player or a third-party Geyser server. Java Realms alone cannot solve this combination.
Everyone on computers
Standardize first, then choose Java or Bedrock based on the features and modifications the group wants. Java Realms is suitable for an all-Java group; Bedrock Realms is suitable for an all-Bedrock group. Mixing editions is unnecessary unless the players specifically need different platforms.

Official Realms generally offers the more predictable service and support model. A Geyser server provides the only route covered here for simultaneous Java–Bedrock play, but its stability depends on the administrator, host, network and compatibility of the installed components.
Troubleshooting connection problems
A friend cannot see or join the Realm
- Check that the friend launched the same edition as the Realm. A Java account will not appear as a Bedrock Realm member, and vice versa.
- Confirm that the invitation was sent to the account identity the friend actually uses on that device.
- For a console player, verify that the required online multiplayer subscription is active.
- Check the Realm plan’s simultaneous-player allowance if several people are already online.
Bedrock cannot connect to a Geyser server
- Confirm that the server is currently running and that the administrator has provided the Bedrock address, not only the Java address.
- Recheck the port. Bedrock commonly uses 19132, but a host may assign a different value.
- Ask the administrator whether Geyser and Floodgate are installed for the server version currently running.
- Try again after the administrator restarts the service or completes a compatibility update. Third-party servers can go offline without changing anything on the player’s device.
The Java player can connect but the console player cannot
This usually means the Java side of the server is reachable while the Bedrock listener is not. The administrator should verify Geyser’s Bedrock listener, its configured port and any host-level network rule that could block Bedrock traffic. Players cannot fix a missing listener from inside the Bedrock client.
Is Java–Bedrock Realms crossplay coming?
As of October 14, 2026, no official announcement confirming Java–Bedrock crossplay for Realms was identified. Community feedback posts requesting that feature are requests from players, not product announcements. Plan on the current separation unless Mojang publishes a specific release notice.
Which option should your group choose?
- Choose Bedrock Realms when at least one player is on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, Android, iOS or ChromeOS and everyone can use Bedrock.
- Choose Java Realms when every player is on Windows, Linux or macOS and everyone wants Java Edition.
- Choose Geyser with Floodgate when the group must include both Java and Bedrock players and someone is willing to administer a server.
- Reconsider the plan if your group needs the simplicity of Realms but cannot standardize editions. There is no official Realm setting that turns a Java Realm into a Bedrock Realm or combines both.
The practical decision is therefore about edition first, hosting second. Standardizing on one edition keeps setup and troubleshooting simple; accepting the extra administration of Geyser is the price of true Java–Bedrock crossplay.
