The reliable way to optimize a driving simulator for a Steam demo is to measure a packaged development build on the minimum PC you intend to support, identify whether the limit is the game thread, rendering thread, GPU, memory, loading, or vehicle simulation, and then change only the systems implicated by that measurement. Re-drive the same demanding route after every change, recording frame-time stability, image quality, handling, memory, and loading behavior.

No project-specific Unreal Engine version, target specification, baseline capture, vehicle count, render pipeline, or demo requirements were supplied. The procedures below are therefore a measurement framework, not a claim that any setting will produce a particular gain on your project. Check every recommendation against the engine version used by the project and its actual target hardware.

Define what “playable” means before changing settings

Start with a written performance contract. Identify the minimum target PC, display resolution, graphics API, expected vehicle count, and the visual details that make the simulator recognizable. Decide whether the requirement is a stable frame time, a frame-rate ceiling, or an adaptive range. Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.8 profiling guidance uses 30, 60, and 120 frames per second as general examples; those figures are not measured results or universal requirements for this simulator. A 30 fps budget is about 33.3 ms per frame, 60 fps about 16.7 ms, and 120 fps about 8.3 ms, but your project should choose the target that its controls, camera, physics, and audience can sustain.

Write down which visual features are non-negotiable. In a driving demo, road-edge readability, vehicle silhouettes, signs, braking points, and motion clarity usually matter more than a distant decorative object, but that prioritization is a design decision for your team rather than a documented benchmark. State the acceptable loading time and whether a short demo can reduce the number of environments or vehicles instead of degrading every scene.

Build a repeatable route and scenario

A repeatable drive is the foundation of useful comparisons. Create a route that passes through the heaviest conditions the demo can expose:

  • The fastest camera movement and longest visible distance.
  • The densest scenery, foliage, lights, decals, and transparent effects.
  • Traffic, opponent vehicles, pedestrians, or replay objects when the demo includes them.
  • Collisions, tire smoke, sparks, weather, or other effects that can create transient spikes.
  • Level-streaming boundaries and any transitions that occur during normal play.

Keep the route, camera, resolution, quality preset, vehicle count, weather, and time of day identical when comparing captures. Record a short warm-up before the timed section so shader compilation, asset streaming, and first-use caches do not make one run look artificially slow. Save the route and scenario description with each capture; otherwise a later result cannot be reproduced.

Profile a packaged development build, not the editor

Package a development build and run it on the intended target hardware. Editor performance includes editor-only work and does not represent the shipped experience. Epic recommends benchmarking target platforms and testing the project regularly; use the editor for authoring and quick inspection, but use the packaged build for decisions about frame time, memory, loading, and stutter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Profiling itself consumes resources. Unreal Insights captures can add CPU, memory, and disk activity, so a capture may modestly alter the result. Use the same capture method for before-and-after comparisons, keep the capture window as short as practical, and validate the final change with a run that does not include the profiler when you need to confirm player-facing behavior.

Find the limiting resource first

Use live counters for a first pass

In the packaged build, open the Unreal console and run stat unit. Compare frame time with Game, Draw, and GPU timings. The largest consistently high component points to the next investigation; a single spike is not enough to justify a broad settings change. stat unitgraph adds a history graph so you can see whether the problem is sustained or intermittent.

  • A high Game value directs attention to gameplay ticks, AI, input, asset work, or physics scheduling.
  • A high Draw value directs attention to scene submission, component counts, visibility work, and render-thread synchronization.
  • A high GPU value directs attention to resolution, shadows, post-processing, materials, lighting, and effects.

These are diagnostic directions, not findings about your project. Confirm them with a trace before editing systems that may not be responsible.

Use Unreal Insights to explain spikes

Capture the route in Unreal Insights and open Timing Insights. The view provides per-frame timings and separate CPU-thread and GPU-event tracks. Select an individual frame or a time range, then inspect timer events and counters around the spike. Look for a repeating event, a one-time loading operation, or a synchronization wait. A frame that is slow because the game thread is waiting for an asset has a different remedy from one dominated by GPU shadow rendering, even if both appear as the same frame-rate drop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep a small log for each run: build identifier, hardware, resolution, scalability values, route segment, average frame time, worst sustained interval, visible hitch, and the suspected limiting resource. Frame-time consistency is more useful for a demo than an average that hides periodic stalls.

Use RenderDoc for an individual graphics frame

When the trace indicates a graphics bottleneck, capture a representative frame with RenderDoc. Epic positions it as a detailed graphics diagnostic for examining draw events, textures, shaders, and pipeline state, beyond the general rendering overview in Insights. Inspect the capture to determine whether the cost comes from a small number of expensive passes, excessive overdraw, large textures, or many repeated draws. Change one related control, then recapture the same route and frame type.

Use a controlled optimization loop

  1. Record the baseline on the minimum target PC using the packaged development build.
  2. Run the identical route and scenario twice if necessary to separate warm-up behavior from repeatable behavior.
  3. Use stat unit, stat unitgraph, and an Insights trace to classify the limiting resource.
  4. Choose one setting or subsystem that directly matches the evidence.
  5. Change only that variable and keep resolution, camera, route, vehicle count, and other quality controls fixed.
  6. Repeat the route and record frame-time distribution, visible quality, handling, memory, and loading effects.
  7. Retain the change only if it improves the intended bottleneck without violating the visual or driving requirements.
  8. After a group of accepted changes, make a clean packaged build and repeat the complete route without diagnostic overlays.

This sequence prevents a common failure: lowering several unrelated settings, observing an improvement, and being unable to tell which change helped or what quality was sacrificed.

Match scalability controls to measured cost

Unreal scalability provides independent controls for screen percentage, view distance, anti-aliasing, post-processing, shadows, material quality, and foliage. Treat each as a testable trade-off rather than a guaranteed fix. Verify the result at the target resolution and from the camera distances used by the demo.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Control Investigate it when Check before keeping the change
Screen percentage GPU frame time is high and the scene is resolution-bound. Road markings, distant vehicles, signs, and cockpit readability at the target display resolution.
View distance Visibility, scene submission, or distant geometry is expensive. Braking references, upcoming turns, traffic visibility, and distracting pop-in.
Anti-aliasing GPU cost or temporal reconstruction is significant. Thin rails, guard wires, road edges, and shimmering during fast camera motion.
Post-processing GPU events show expensive effects such as bloom, ambient effects, or motion processing. Motion clarity, night readability, cockpit visibility, and the simulator’s intended look.
Shadows Shadow passes or cascades dominate GPU timing. Contact and directional cues around the car, roadside objects, and other vehicles.
Material quality Shaders, texture sampling, or material passes are costly. Road surface cues, wetness, tire response cues, and important dashboard information.
Foliage Dense vegetation creates overdraw or large visibility workloads. Track boundaries, corner sightlines, and unwanted popping while driving.

Do not assume a lower preset is automatically better. A setting can reduce one cost while exposing another, and a change that helps one graphics card may not help another. Preserve the controls that communicate speed, road position, and hazards, then spend the remaining budget on decoration.

Measure memory and loading separately from frame time

Use the editor’s Size Map and Statistics tools to find large assets and content clusters. These views help locate a level, texture set, or mesh that deserves inspection, but Size Map is an editor representation and does not exactly equal memory used by cooked packaged content.

For a packaged development build on target hardware, run Memreport -full. Examine loaded levels, render resources, and texture footprint. Compare reports before and after a change rather than relying on file size alone. A smaller package can still produce high runtime memory if many resources are loaded together, while an apparently large package may stream efficiently.

Epic documents a compression trade-off: ZLib can reduce on-disk package size but requires more CPU time during loading. Decide whether the demo’s priority is download size, startup time, or a balance. Test a cold launch and a repeat launch, and include a streaming transition in the route. Do not copy sample .ini recommendations blindly; confirm that each key applies to the project’s Unreal version and target platform.

Profile Chaos Vehicles and protect handling fidelity

Confirm the vehicle stack

Epic’s Chaos Vehicles setup describes a skeletal mesh, physics asset, animation blueprint, vehicle blueprint, wheel blueprints, and a torque-curve asset. Verify that the packaged build contains the intended versions of these assets before diagnosing runtime cost. A missing or substituted asset can create behavior that looks like a performance issue.

Measure vehicle simulation directly

Use stat ChaosVehicle to inspect per-part simulation timing and stat ChaosVehicleManager to inspect total vehicle simulation timing. The manager statistics include vehicle count and awake/sleeping counters. Capture these values while the route has no traffic, then with the maximum traffic or opponent count the demo permits. This identifies whether cost scales with the number of active vehicles or with another part of the scene.

Two console settings are useful experiments: p.Vehicle.BatchQueries tests suspension-query batching, and p.Vehicle.EnableMultithreading tests parallel vehicle updates. They are investigation switches, not guaranteed wins. Compare frame time, simulation stability, collision behavior, and reproducibility after each change before retaining it.

Check physics behavior after every performance change

Use p.Vehicle.ShowCOM to visualize the vehicle center of mass when handling changes are suspected. The center of mass affects vehicle behavior; a faster simulation path is not acceptable if it changes braking, suspension response, steering balance, or rollover behavior. Re-drive a fixed set of acceleration, braking, cornering, and collision checks after changing vehicle settings.

Prepare the Steam demo as its own product configuration

Steamworks treats a demo as a separate App ID associated with the base game’s App ID. The demo has its own depots, builds, and configuration. Create the demo app, set its app type and base App ID, create the required depots and builds, and test installation and launching through Steam rather than only from a local executable.

Keep the demo’s content and store description aligned with what players can actually access. Steamworks describes the intended scope this way: "Demos can range in size and scope, but generally are a small playable portion of your game that show some of the core mechanics and leave the player excited for more." A short route with polished handling and a representative environment is preferable to an unstable sample of every system.

If the demo uses a separate store page, make its description, feature list, trailer, and screenshots specific to the demo. Steamworks documentation calls for a trailer and at least five screenshots specific to the demo content. Do not advertise vehicles, tracks, modes, or settings that are not available in the build players receive.

Compare optimization changes on five axes

Axis Question to record
Frame-time bottleneck Did the measured Game, Draw, GPU, loading, or vehicle cost improve on the target PC?
Consistency Did recurring spikes and streaming hitches become less frequent or shorter?
Image quality Are road readability, vehicle visibility, motion clarity, and important effects still acceptable at target resolution?
Vehicle behavior Are acceleration, braking, suspension, collisions, and center-of-mass behavior unchanged?
Memory and packaging Did runtime memory, package size, startup, or level-loading behavior move in the intended direction?

A change should survive all five checks. A GPU reduction that causes a streaming hitch, a memory reduction that lengthens startup, or a multithreading change that alters handling is not an unconditional improvement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes and recovery paths

  • Tuning from editor FPS: build the packaged development version and repeat the route on target hardware.
  • Chasing an average frame rate: inspect frame-time graphs and worst sustained intervals so periodic hitches are visible.
  • Changing several settings at once: revert to the baseline, change one variable, and recapture.
  • Lowering every visual group: return quality to the required level, identify the measured GPU pass, and reduce only the matching control.
  • Ignoring profiling overhead: compare profiler captures consistently and confirm the accepted result without diagnostic capture.
  • Treating editor Size Map as packaged memory: use Memreport -full on the packaged build and target PC.
  • Applying sample configuration blindly: verify each setting against the project’s Unreal minor version and platform.
  • Optimizing physics without driving checks: use Chaos statistics and center-of-mass visualization, then repeat handling tests.
  • Publishing a mismatched demo page: install through Steam and check that every listed feature is present in the demo App ID build.

Final release checklist

  1. Record the project’s Unreal Engine version, target PC, display resolution, graphics API, and intended performance behavior.
  2. Package a development build and benchmark it on the minimum target hardware.
  3. Save a repeatable route containing the heaviest scenery, vehicle, effects, and streaming conditions.
  4. Capture stat unit, stat unitgraph, and Unreal Insights data for the baseline.
  5. Use RenderDoc only when a graphics-frame diagnosis requires draw, texture, shader, or pipeline detail.
  6. Apply one evidence-matched visual, memory, loading, or vehicle change at a time.
  7. Re-run the route after every change and record frame-time stability, quality, handling, memory, and loading.
  8. Validate Chaos Vehicle behavior, including center-of-mass and collision checks, after simulation changes.
  9. Build the Steam demo under its separate App ID, configure depots and builds, and test installation and launch through Steam.
  10. Review the demo store page, trailer, screenshots, and feature list against the exact content players can access.

The official Epic and Steamworks documentation used for this workflow is current to the Unreal Engine 5.8 and Steamworks material accessed on 13 October 2026. Documentation pages did not establish a project-specific benchmark, hardware requirement, or universal setting value. Re-check commands and configuration names against the project’s exact engine version before shipping.
