To move a half-finished download in µTorrent Classic, stop the torrent, move its data to the destination drive, then use that job’s Set Download Location… command to point µTorrent to the new location. Let the client recheck the files before resuming; if it does not start a recheck automatically, force one yourself. This allows µTorrent to identify the data already present and continue downloading missing pieces.
Move an active download in µTorrent Classic
The steps below apply to the desktop Classic client. They follow the procedure in the archived µTorrent FAQ: Usage; menu wording or placement may vary in other versions.
- Stop the torrent job. In the torrent list, open the job’s context menu and choose Stop. The archived FAQ begins its procedure with: “Stop the torrent job whose contents you wish to move.”
- Move the data. Use your operating system’s file manager to move the torrent’s files or containing folder to the destination drive. As a practical precaution, preserve the existing names and folder structure so the client can find the same files in their new location.
- Set the new location for that job. In µTorrent, open the job’s context menu, choose Set Download Location…, and select the location where you moved the data.
- Check the data before continuing. If µTorrent does not recheck automatically, open the job’s context menu and choose its force-recheck command. Wait for the check to finish.
- Resume the job. Once verification is complete, start or resume the torrent. µTorrent can then recognize available pieces and request the missing data.
Keep the destination drive connected and accessible while the torrent is active. The archived FAQ describes the move-and-recheck procedure but does not promise that the progress display will remain unchanged during the transition.

Changing where future downloads are saved does not relocate the files for a half-finished job. For the default location, uTorrent Support gives this path: Options → Directories, select the desired location, then click Apply. That setting changes the default; use Set Download Location… on the individual torrent to redirect an existing job. See uTorrent Support’s instructions for changing the default download location.

The µTorrent manual also distinguishes among Put new downloads in, which sets the destination for newly added jobs; Move completed downloads to, which sets where completed torrent contents are moved; and the directory used to store .torrent files. These preferences are separate from changing the location of an active, partially downloaded job.
µTorrent Classic and uTorrent Web use different procedures
Do not apply the Web client’s file-transfer instructions to a Classic torrent job. uTorrent Support’s file-transfer guide is specifically for uTorrent Web: it describes opening the download folder with the folder icon, moving files through Windows or Mac file explorer, and then removing the torrent from uTorrent Web. It is not the Classic active-job relocation procedure above.

An external hard drive is one possible destination if you need more storage, but it is not required to preserve progress. Any suitable destination drive that has enough space and remains accessible can be used.

If the download was interrupted, rather than moved
For an interrupted item in uTorrent’s Torrent Feed, uTorrent Support says to select the item and choose Actions → Start to resume it. This is a separate support instruction, not a substitute for changing the location of an existing Classic job’s data. See uTorrent Support’s interrupted-download guidance.
