To audit an AI search engine, preserve an evidence chain from the user request to the retrieval event, the documents or chunks returned, the model input, and every citation shown with the answer. A link alone is not an audit record: you also need stable identifiers, timestamps, configuration versions, logs, ingestion status, and tests that check whether each claim is both cited and actually supported.
What a complete audit trail contains
An audit should let an investigator reconstruct one response without relying on the model’s memory or on a web page that may later change. For each production request, retain the following fields, subject to your privacy, access-control, licensing, and retention rules:
- A request or trace ID, event timestamp, tenant or application identifier, and the original user query.
- Model, prompt or orchestration configuration, retrieval configuration, index or knowledge-base version, and the API or service version used.
- Every retrieved reference ID, document or chunk ID, source title, canonical URL, rank or relevance value when exposed, and the retrieval activity that produced it.
- The usable excerpt, content hash, or provider source-snapshot reference that the model was shown. Store the full text only when your permissions and license allow it.
- The model input containing retrieved material, the generated answer, and the citation objects or spans displayed to the user.
- Latency, token or usage data, errors, retries, throttling events, and the identity of the caller.
This joins three objects that are often logged separately: the answer, the retrieval operation, and the underlying source. Azure AI Search references can include an activity cross-reference and indexed source data; Amazon Bedrock retrieve-and-generate responses can cite specific source chunks. The exact field names differ by endpoint and API version, so record the deployed version beside each event rather than assuming a preview response will remain stable.

A practical event shape
Your schema can be relational or event-based. The important property is that IDs join the records unambiguously. A minimal event might look like this:

}Do not treat this as a provider-standard payload. It is an internal correlation model. Keep raw provider responses separately when permitted, because a normalized record can omit fields needed during a later incident.
Instrument every layer of the path
No single log answers every audit question. Separate instrumentation into layers and connect them with the trace ID.
1. Application layer
Log the request and response IDs, query, user or service principal, model and configuration versions, start and end times, answer text, and the citation objects rendered by your interface. If the application rewrites a query, fans it out into subqueries, or applies a post-processing step, record those operations and their parent trace.

2. Retrieval layer
Capture the knowledge sources selected, query rewrites or subqueries when the service exposes them, returned documents and chunks, rank or relevance information, filters, and elapsed retrieval time. Preserve the distinction between items retrieved and items actually passed to the model; ranking, deduplication, token limits, and safety filters can remove material between those stages.
3. Platform activity and audit layer
Enable the provider’s resource logs and audit events. Azure AI Search publishes monitoring data and documents resource-log schemas. Amazon Web Services states that CloudTrail can capture Amazon Bedrock Web Search API data events, allowing an operator to audit who invoked the tool, when, and from where. Join those events to the application trace using request IDs, operation IDs, or a documented time-and-principal correlation when a direct ID is unavailable.

4. Ingestion and service-health layer
Monitor ingestion status for each document, failed or partial indexing, request volume, latency, errors, and throttling. Amazon Bedrock documentation describes ingestion logs for individual document status and runtime metrics for managed knowledge-base operations. A healthy answer log cannot compensate for a source that never indexed or an index that is hours behind its origin.

Build a reproducible citation-quality test
Presence of a citation is not the same as support. Evaluate every answer on separate dimensions so a polished-looking response cannot hide a gap.

Create a versioned test set containing straightforward lookups, ambiguous wording, recent or changing information, multi-hop questions, and questions for which an authoritative source is known in advance. Include high-impact subjects such as health, finance, safety, or policy if your system serves them. Keep the expected-source annotations outside the prompt so the test does not force the answer.
Split answers into factual claims
Annotators should mark each independently verifiable assertion, including numbers, dates, causal statements, and comparisons. A single sentence can contain several claims and require more than one source. Label opinions, instructions, and clearly signposted uncertainty separately so they are not scored as unsupported facts.
Score four dimensions
- Citation completeness (recall): the proportion of material factual claims with a citation a reader can follow.
- Citation accuracy (precision): the proportion of cited claims actually supported by the attached source passage.
- Retrieval adequacy: whether important, authoritative sources were retrieved and whether the final answer used them correctly.
- Link integrity: whether the citation resolves to the record or source it claims to represent, without a stale ID, redirect failure, or permission error.
The 2023 paper Evaluating Verifiability in Generative Search Engines frames verifiability around comprehensive support for claims and accurate support from the associated citations. Its study covered four systems available at that time; use its definition as an audit rubric, not as a current ranking.

Repeat tests after every material change
Run the same set after changing an index, chunking or embedding configuration, retrieval filters, ranking, prompt, model, safety policy, or citation renderer. Compare claim support, source coverage, citation failures, latency, errors, and usage cost. Store the test run ID with the configuration hashes so a regression can be explained rather than guessed.
Record why a source was selected
Knowing which page appeared is weaker than knowing why it won. Selection rationale can expose a ranking bug, an over-weighted domain, or a query rewrite that changed the task. Microsoft’s Azure AI Search transparency guidance calls for transparency into what was retrieved, why it was retrieved, and at what cost. Implement that guidance by retaining, when available:
- Match, semantic, vector, or hybrid retrieval scores and rank.
- Query terms, rewrites, filters, freshness or authority boosts, and deduplication decisions.
- Source type, publisher, publication or update date, language, and access classification.
- Token count or context budget consumed by each source and the reason other candidates were dropped.
- Any human approval, allowlist, blocklist, or policy rule that changed the candidate set.
Provider APIs do not expose every rationale field. Mark unavailable values as “not exposed” in your internal record; never infer a reason from rank alone.
Monitor source diversity and provenance
Aggregate cited sources by domain, publisher, source type, language, geography, and topic. Track both frequency and coverage: a few domains can dominate answers even when many other sources are technically present. Review sudden shifts after a crawler, ranking, or index update.
Check source provenance
For high-impact topics, have a qualified reviewer inspect whether cited publishers are primary, current, competent for the claim, and independent enough to avoid circular reporting. Preserve the provenance decision with the test record, including the reason a source was accepted, downgraded, or rejected.

Interpret published audit numbers narrowly
A 2026 preprint, Synthetic Sources?: Auditing Generative Search Engine Citations for Evidence of AI-Generated Sources, examined four generative search engines using 712 real-world, human-generated queries in politics, health, and the environment. Its abstract reports evidence of AI-generated sources across all four systems at approximately 16% of cited sources in that sample and method. That figure is not a universal rate for AI search; use it as a reason to add provenance checks.
A separate 2026 preprint, Sources of Truth: A Multi-Platform, Multilingual Audit of Citations in AI Mental Health Information Queries, reports 15,942 citations across 1,140 responses and 1,713 unique domains. Those counts describe that study’s collected sample and scope, not all AI-search traffic or every language.
Set operational alerts and incident evidence
Alerts should identify failures before a user reports an unverifiable answer. Useful conditions include:
- Document ingestion failures, stale indexes, or a sudden rise in partial updates.
- Errors, latency, quota exhaustion, or throttling above an agreed baseline.
- A response with no citation record when citations are required, or a citation whose document ID is absent from retrieval logs.
- Broken, unauthorized, redirected, or content-mismatched source links.
- Unexpected changes in domain, publisher, language, or source-type distribution.
- Regression in completeness, accuracy, retrieval adequacy, or link integrity on the fixed evaluation set.
During an incident, preserve the exact query; retrieved candidates; selected items; model-visible context; generated answer; displayed citations; caller identity; service, index, and prompt versions; and all relevant configuration changes. The goal is to answer, in order, what was sent, what came back, what the model saw, what it cited, and what changed.

Platform-specific implementation notes
Azure AI Search
Azure documentation describes references that can carry an activity cross-reference and indexed source data. Its citation URL preview can look up selected indexed fields. Capture the reference and activity identifiers together, and label the API version because stable and preview capabilities can differ. Resource-log schemas and monitoring data should be enabled at the service level and retained according to your policy.

Amazon Bedrock
Amazon Bedrock’s retrieve-and-generate path can return citations to source chunks. Keep the chunk identifier, location, and returned excerpt alongside the generated answer. Amazon Web Services states that CloudTrail captures Bedrock Web Search API data events; use those records to identify the caller, event time, and origin. Bedrock managed-knowledge-base observability documentation also covers ingestion logs and runtime metrics, which should be joined to answer traces.
These examples are documented capabilities, not a guarantee that every endpoint or region returns identical fields. Verify the exact service, API version, permissions, and retention settings deployed in your environment.
Protect sensitive source material while retaining evidence
Audit data can contain private documents, user queries, access tokens, or regulated information. Apply least-privilege access to raw excerpts and separate them from aggregate metrics. Encrypt logs, redact secrets before export, and record a content hash when storing the source text is not allowed. Keep the access decision and retention period with the record. A citation that a reviewer cannot open because of permissions should be labeled as access-restricted, not silently treated as verified.

An implementation checklist
- Define the audit boundary: applications, indexes, external web search, tenants, and retention obligations.
- Create a correlation schema linking request, retrieval activity, document or chunk, model context, answer, and citation.
- Enable application, retrieval, platform-audit, ingestion, and runtime-health telemetry.
- Record service, API, model, prompt, index, and ranking versions for every run.
- Build and version a representative evaluation set with known authoritative sources.
- Score citation completeness, citation accuracy, retrieval adequacy, and link integrity separately.
- Aggregate provenance and source-distribution metrics by domain, publisher, type, language, and topic.
- Alert on ingestion failures, throttling, missing joins, broken links, source-mix drift, and evaluation regressions.
- Restrict raw evidence, redact secrets, and document retention and access decisions.
- Review an incident by reconstructing the exact request, retrieval, model context, citation output, and configuration change.
What success looks like
An auditable AI search system can answer five questions for any response: Which query and configuration ran? What records were retrieved and why? What material reached the model? Which claims were linked to which sources? Can an authorized reviewer open or otherwise validate those sources? Monitoring is effective when those answers remain available even after the index, model, ranking policy, or source website changes.
