You can keep using Grok while limiting several ways your information is handled. X provides separate controls for model training and fine-tuning, personalization, deleting existing Grok history, and protecting public posts. Review all four: turning off training does not delete old conversations, turning off personalization is a different choice, and protecting posts does not replace either Grok control.
The menu names and locations below follow X Help Center guidance accessed on October 13, 2026. X does not show a publication or last-updated date for that guidance, so labels can move as the service changes.
What each Grok privacy control changes
These settings address different data, purposes and time periods. Use the table to decide which actions match your goal before changing anything.

Before changing settings
Decide whether you are trying to prevent future model-training use, stop personalization, remove history already held by X, limit exposure of public posts, or all of these. The actions are independent, so changing one does not silently perform the others.

- For future training and fine-tuning: turn off Grok Data Sharing.
- For tailored responses and experiences: turn off Grok Personalization as well.
- For existing conversations: use Delete Conversation History.
- For public-post visibility and model use: enable Protect your posts.
Take a screenshot of the resulting toggle state if you need an internal record of when you changed it. X’s published instructions describe the controls but do not state that a screenshot or other local record is retained by X.
Turn off Grok data sharing for model training
This is the control X identifies for opting out of the use of public X data and Grok interactions, inputs and results in model creation and fine-tuning conducted by xAI. It is a prospective setting: it does not erase conversations that already exist.
Exact path in X settings
- Open X and go to Settings and privacy.
- Select Privacy & Safety.
- Open Data sharing and personalization.
- Choose Grok & Third-party Collaborators.
- Find Data Sharing.
- Turn off the option that allows public X data and interactions, inputs and results with Grok and xAI to be used for training and fine-tuning.
- Confirm the change if X displays a confirmation prompt, then return to the same page and check that the option remains off.
X says you can continue using Grok after opting out. The setting concerns model creation and fine-tuning; it is not a promise that a deployed model never learns from ordinary use of X features powered by Grok. X specifically distinguishes this opt-out from normal operation of features such as recommendations.

Turn off Grok personalization separately
Personalization determines whether X uses personal data to tailor your Grok experience. It is not bundled with the training opt-out, so check it independently even if Data Sharing is already off.
Exact path in X settings
- Open Settings and privacy.
- Go to Privacy & Safety, then Data sharing and personalization.
- Open Grok & Third-party Collaborators.
- Find Grok Personalization.
- Turn off the option allowing X to personalize your Grok experience.
- Reopen the page to verify that the personalization option is off.
According to X, Grok remains available after this change, but your personal data will not be used to personalize that experience. This setting does not delete prior chats and does not itself address use of public posts for model training.

Delete existing Grok conversation history
Opting out controls future use; it does not remove conversations already retained. To request deletion of existing interactions, inputs and results, use the dedicated history command.
Exact path in X settings
- Open Settings and privacy.
- Select Privacy & Safety.
- Open Data sharing and personalization.
- Choose Grok.
- Select Delete Conversation History.
- Read the confirmation text and confirm deletion.
X says deleted conversations are removed from its systems within 30 days. That is a stated service-retention timeframe, not an independently measured performance guarantee. X also says security or legal reasons can require retaining information, so deletion may not remove every copy immediately or in every circumstance.
Deleting history is separate from both Data Sharing and Grok Personalization. If you do not want new conversations considered for training or personalization, change those toggles too; deleting history alone does not establish those future-use preferences.
Protect your public posts
If your concern includes posts visible to the public, use the audience control in addition to the Grok-specific settings. X says protecting posts limits their visibility and prevents those posts from being used to train underlying Grok and xAI models or surfaced in response to user queries.
Exact path in X settings
- Open Settings and privacy.
- Select Privacy & Safety.
- Open Audience and tagging.
- Turn on Protect your posts.
- Review the confirmation and save the change if prompted.
Protecting posts addresses post visibility and the stated use of protected posts. It does not erase Grok conversation history, turn off personalization, or change what happens when you deliberately submit feedback on a Grok conversation.

Exceptions that can override an otherwise careful setup
Conversation feedback can permit training use
X says that submitting feedback on a conversation, including a thumbs-up or thumbs-down, can allow X and xAI to use that conversation and related data to train and fine-tune Grok. This can apply even when you have opted out of the ordinary training setting. If you do not want that use, X recommends not submitting conversation feedback.

The opt-out does not stop every form of model learning during normal service operation
X describes Data Sharing as a control over model creation and fine-tuning. It does not claim that a deployed model can never learn as a result of normal use of X features powered by Grok, such as recommendations. Therefore, the setting narrows one documented training pathway; it is not a guarantee that no Grok-powered feature will process activity while you use X.
Adding Grok to an X Chat changes the confidentiality boundary
X says Chat conversations are end-to-end encrypted, but adding @Grok is a separate disclosure choice. While Grok is present, X and SpaceXAI can access all messages from the time Grok is added until it is removed. X also says text or images sent to Grok are no longer encrypted.
Consider this a conversation-level decision rather than a general account setting. If a chat contains confidential material, do not add Grok merely to summarize or answer a question. Removing Grok later does not change the fact that it had access during the period it was present.

Do not enter sensitive information
X’s Grok help guidance gives a direct warning: “Please do not share personal data or any sensitive and confidential information in your conversations with Grok.” This advice remains relevant after you change the toggles because the controls do not make a sensitive prompt safe to disclose, and some exceptions described above still apply.
What information X says may be shared with xAI
Understanding the categories helps you decide what not to type or upload. X says public X data and Grok interaction inputs and outputs may be shared with xAI for training and fine-tuning. Its description includes the following:
- Public posts and associated metadata, such as engagement and reposts.
- Public Spaces.
- Public profiles.
- User interests and interactions.
- Inputs sent to Grok and the resulting outputs.
- Voice inputs. X says voice material may be transcribed or translated, and the voice inputs, transcripts or translations may be shared.
The list describes categories X says can be involved; it does not mean every item is used in every interaction or that turning off one setting retroactively removes data. Use the dedicated deletion action for existing history and avoid entering information you would not want processed under these conditions.

If you want to apply every control relevant to an ordinary X account, complete the actions in this order so that future use and existing history are both addressed.

- Disable Data Sharing: in Privacy & Safety → Data sharing and personalization → Grok & Third-party Collaborators → Data Sharing, turn off the training and fine-tuning option.
- Disable personalization: in the same Grok & Third-party Collaborators area, turn off Grok Personalization.
- Delete stored history: open Privacy & Safety → Data sharing and personalization → Grok → Delete Conversation History and confirm.
- Protect public posts: open Privacy & Safety → Audience and tagging → Protect your posts and enable it if limiting public-post use and visibility is part of your goal.
- Change behavior in conversations: do not submit thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback on chats you do not want considered for training, do not add
@Grokto confidential Chats, and do not enter personal, sensitive or confidential information.
The first two actions affect future processing purposes, the third addresses data already retained, and the fourth changes the audience and stated model-use treatment of posts. The final step covers disclosures that settings alone do not eliminate.

How to check that a setting change took effect
The toggle is still visible
X’s guidance does not say that a disabled option disappears. Return to the same menu and confirm its switch is visibly off. If the app and web interface show different wording, follow the function rather than assuming a similarly named control has the same effect.
You can still use Grok
Continued access is expected after turning off Data Sharing or Grok Personalization. The fact that Grok still responds is not evidence that the opt-out failed; X explicitly says the service remains available.
Old conversations remain temporarily
Deletion is not necessarily instantaneous. X says removal can take up to 30 days and can be subject to security or legal-retention requirements. If history remains during that period, check that you used Delete Conversation History rather than only changing a training or personalization toggle.
A public post is still visible
Protecting posts changes the account’s audience setting; it is not a history-deletion command. Check Audience and tagging → Protect your posts and separately use the Grok history deletion path if past conversations are the issue.
Common mistakes and the correct fix

What these settings cannot promise
- They do not guarantee that a deployed Grok-powered feature will never learn from normal operation.
- They do not prevent feedback-related use when you submit a thumbs-up or thumbs-down on a conversation.
- They do not guarantee immediate or absolute erasure where security or legal obligations require retention.
- They do not preserve end-to-end encryption for text or images sent to Grok in a Chat.
- They do not make public information private unless you also change the audience setting for posts.
These are boundaries stated in X’s own guidance, not estimates of how often an exception occurs.
Keeping the settings current
The paths in this guide reflect X Help Center instructions accessed October 13, 2026. The retrieved guidance does not provide separate paths for each operating system or region and does not expose a publication or last-updated date. X can rename menus, regroup controls or present a confirmation screen differently.
When the interface changes, start from Settings and privacy → Privacy & Safety, look for Data sharing and personalization, and verify the function’s wording before saving. For post visibility, look under Audience and tagging. Do not assume a newly named control has the same scope until its description says whether it concerns training, personalization, deletion or audience.
Bottom line for an X user
For the broadest reduction of Grok data use, switch off both Data Sharing and Grok Personalization, delete existing history, and protect posts if you do not want them public or used in the stated ways. Then avoid conversation feedback on material you want excluded, never add Grok to a confidential Chat, and do not enter sensitive information. Remember that X’s 30-day deletion statement has security and legal exceptions, and its training opt-out does not cover every form of normal operation by deployed Grok-powered features.
