Instagram Reels are short videos made from one or more clips, photos, music, effects, text and stickers. You can record a Reel inside the Instagram app, assemble existing media, or upload a finished video from a computer.
This guide covers the complete creation process, including Reel dimensions, recording and editing tools, music licensing, drafts, downloads, covers, computer uploads and common publishing problems.
Before you make an Instagram Reel
A little preparation prevents the most common quality and publishing problems.
| Setting | Current Instagram guidance | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum duration | Up to 20 minutes, using one or multiple clips | Keep it focused. Reels longer than 3 minutes are not recommended to new audiences. |
| Aspect ratio | From 1.91:1 through 9:16 | Use 9:16 for a full-screen vertical Reel. |
| Resolution | At least 720 pixels | Export at 1080 × 1920 pixels when possible. |
| Frame rate | At least 30 frames per second is recommended | Use 30 fps unless your footage was recorded at a higher frame rate. |
| Cover size | Recommended: 420 × 654 pixels, approximately 1:1.55 | Choose a clear frame with the important subject near the center. |
A Reel does not have to be exactly 9:16 for an organic post. Instagram accepts other ratios, but a vertical 9:16 video generally fills the phone screen more effectively. Some advertising and boosting options have stricter full-screen requirements.
#1 Best Overall
- Edit your videos and pictures to perfection with a host of helpful editing tools.
- Create amazing videos with fun effects and interesting transitions.
- Record or add audio clips to your video, or simply pull stock sounds from the NCH Sound Library.
- Enhance your audio tracks with impressive audio effects, like Pan, Reverb or Echo.
- Share directly online to Facebook, YouTube, and other platforms or burn directly to disc.
How to make a Reel in the Instagram app
- Open Instagram and tap Create at the top. Depending on your app version, you can also swipe right from anywhere in Feed.
- On the creation screen, scroll along the bottom and select Reel.
- Choose whether to record with the camera or import media from your phone. Tap the gallery or media button to select existing videos or photos.
- Record your first clip, or select the files you want to use. You can add more clips after importing the first one.
- Use the editing controls to trim, arrange and enhance the Reel.
- Tap Next, then tap Next again to open the posting screen.
- Add a caption and any optional location, tags, alternate text and post settings.
- Tap Share.
When recording inside Instagram, the progress bar shows how much of the available Reel duration you have used. Recording does not have to be one continuous take: separate clips can be joined into a single Reel.
What the Reel recording tools do
The tools shown in the camera may vary by account, phone, region and Instagram version. The main controls work as follows:
- Music: Search Instagram’s audio library and select the section of a track you want to use. Where lyrics are available, Instagram may offer lyric styles and a slider for choosing the lyrics section.
- Effects: Apply a camera effect before or during recording. Use Search to find a particular effect.
- Add: Add an Add Yours sticker or related prompt.
- Speed: Record or play the video faster or slower. Instagram applies this change to the video and its audio, so it is not a video-only adjustment.
- Layout: Divide the screen into a grid and combine views or media elements in one frame.
- Length: Set the recording length. Instagram displays a countdown before recording.
- Dual: Record with the front and rear cameras at the same time.
- Align clips: Show the end of the previous clip as a transparent overlay. This helps line up a person, object or camera position for a clean transition.
Align clips becomes available after at least one clip has been recorded. It is useful for jump cuts, outfit changes, hand-cover transitions and placing an object in the same position across two shots.
A practical Reel editing workflow
- Start with the main footage. Record or import the clips that carry the story before adding decoration. This makes it easier to judge the actual pacing.
- Remove dead time. Trim pauses at the beginning and end of clips. A Reel often loses viewers when the first action or sentence takes too long to start.
- Arrange the clips. Put the clearest explanation, result or visual hook first. Do not assume viewers will watch long enough to reach the important part.
- Use speed selectively. Speeding up a repetitive process can help, but changing speed also changes the clip’s audio. For spoken content, record a separate voiceover or leave the original speed if clarity matters.
- Use Align clips for matched cuts. Finish one shot in a specific position, then use the transparent overlay to begin the next shot in the same position.
- Add music and effects after the structure works. Music cannot fix confusing footage. Add it once the order, timing and message are settled.
- Place text and stickers carefully. Keep essential information in the central part of the 9:16 frame. Instagram’s interface can cover content near the top, bottom and sides.
- Preview the complete Reel. Check the opening seconds, text readability, cuts, spoken audio and music volume before proceeding to the posting screen.
How to add music and other audio
A Reel can contain your own original audio, original audio from another creator, or audio selected from Instagram’s library. To add library music, open the Reel editor, tap Music or Audio, search for a track and use the slider to select the part that should play.
Audio availability is not identical for every account. It can depend on your country, account type and current licensing agreements. Some business accounts do not have access to Instagram’s full licensed music library.
Music issues to watch for
- Instagram’s licensed music library is generally intended for personal, non-commercial use.
- For advertising or other commercial work, use audio you have permission to use. Meta identifies its Sound Collection as royalty-free audio suitable for commercial purposes.
- A track that is available today may later be muted if licensing terms change.
- If you download a Reel, music added from Instagram’s licensed library may not be included in the downloaded video.
If you need a video file with sound outside Instagram, add original audio or properly licensed royalty-free audio before exporting. Do not assume that selecting a popular Instagram track creates a reusable, licensed copy.

Adding text, stickers and effects
Instagram’s mobile Reel editor lets you add text, stickers and effects before publishing. Keep text blocks short enough to read while the video is moving, use strong contrast and avoid placing critical words at the extreme edges of the frame.

How to save an Instagram Reel as a draft
Use a draft if the video is ready enough to revisit but not ready to publish.
- Tap Next while creating the Reel.
- Tap Next again to reach the posting screen.
- Tap Save draft at the bottom.
To reopen it, go to your profile, tap the Reels tab, tap Drafts, and select the Reel.

Important: Reel drafts are stored on the device rather than reliably in the cloud. Signing into the same Instagram account on another phone does not necessarily make the drafts available there. Uninstalling Instagram can delete drafts saved on that device.

Instagram does not state a fixed limit for the number of Reel drafts. Drafts remain until you share or delete them, but keep the original video files separately if the project matters.
How to download a Reel before posting
- Tap Next in the Reel editor.
- Tap Download at the bottom.
The downloaded file may not contain music selected from Instagram’s licensed library. For a complete camera-roll export, use original or properly licensed audio in the project.
How to make a Reel from a computer
Instagram on a computer lets you upload a finished Reel or a set of media files. It is less capable than the mobile editor.
- On Instagram’s website, click Create on the left.
- Click Post.
- Click Select from computer and choose your video or photo.
- To add another file, click Media in the bottom-right corner, then click Add.
- Click Next.
- Under Cover photo, drag the slider to select a frame, or click Select from computer to upload a cover image.
- Under Trim, use the slider to remove unwanted material from the beginning or end.
- Click Next.
- Add the caption, location, tags, alternate text and post settings.
- Click Share.
The desktop uploader is useful when the video was edited in a desktop application, but mobile-only tools such as text-to-speech and Reel templates may not be available there.
Choose the cover before you publish
Select a cover that still makes sense when it is displayed as a small thumbnail on your profile. Put the subject and any short title near the center so it remains visible in different previews.
Instagram’s current Help Center guidance says you cannot edit a Reel’s cover photo after the Reel has been uploaded. Treat the cover selection as a final publishing decision rather than something to fix later.

Improve upload quality
Instagram may process an uploaded video after you share it. To enable its highest-quality upload option:

Higher-quality uploads can take longer to upload or process. Use a strong connection, keep the app open while a large upload completes, and avoid repeatedly uploading a compressed copy of an already compressed video.
Share a Reel automatically to Facebook
You can enable cross-posting when the Instagram and Facebook accounts are linked in Accounts Center.
- Open your Instagram profile and tap the menu in the top-right.
- Tap Accounts Center.
- Tap Sharing across profiles.
- Under Share from, select the Instagram account.
- Turn on Your Instagram reels.
If cross-posting fails, update both apps, confirm the account connection in Accounts Center, turn the sharing option off and on again, restart the apps, and check Account Status for restrictions.

Common Instagram Reel mistakes
| Claim or problem | What is actually happening |
|---|---|
| “Reels can only be 90 seconds.” | Ordinary organic Reels can be up to 20 minutes, although Reels over 3 minutes are not recommended to new audiences. A shorter-than-90-second rule applies to boosting certain Reels. |
| “Every Reel must be 9:16.” | Instagram accepts ratios from 1.91:1 to 9:16. Vertical 9:16 is still the safest full-screen format. |
| “Drafts sync to every phone.” | Drafts are saved on the device and can disappear if the app is uninstalled. |
| “Downloading preserves Instagram music.” | Licensed library music may not be included in the downloaded file. |
| “Every account has the same songs.” | Music access depends on licensing, location and account type. |
| “The cover can be changed after publishing.” | Instagram currently says the cover cannot be edited after upload. |
A simple pre-publish checklist
- Is the video at least 720 pixels and preferably 1080 × 1920?
- Does the first moment show or explain why someone should keep watching?
- Are faces, subtitles and important graphics away from interface areas?
- Can every text block be read without pausing?
- Is the music appropriate for the account’s personal or commercial use?
- Have you checked the audio mix with headphones?
- Did you choose the cover before tapping Share?
- Would you still have the source video if the draft were lost?
- If Facebook sharing is enabled, is the correct account selected in Accounts Center?
FAQ
How long can an Instagram Reel be?
Instagram allows an organic Reel to contain one or more clips totaling up to 20 minutes. However, Reels longer than 3 minutes are not recommended to new audiences. The shorter limits sometimes quoted apply to particular features such as boosting, not every organic Reel.
What is the best size for an Instagram Reel?
Use a vertical 9:16 video, ideally 1080 × 1920 pixels. Instagram accepts aspect ratios from 1.91:1 through 9:16 and recommends at least 720-pixel resolution and 30 frames per second.
Why is my Instagram Reel missing music?
Music availability varies by country, account type and licensing agreements. Some business accounts cannot access Instagram’s full licensed music library. If music is available in the app but disappears from a download, it may be licensed library audio that Instagram does not include in the exported file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan I edit a Reel draft on another phone?
Normally, no. Instagram stores Reel drafts on the device where they were created. They do not reliably sync to another device just because you sign into the same account, and uninstalling Instagram can delete them.
The Bottom Line
For the most reliable result, create a focused 9:16 video, keep important content in the central safe area, edit the footage before adding effects, use audio you are licensed to use, choose the cover carefully and enable Upload at highest quality. Save the source files separately because Reel drafts are device-specific and downloaded files may omit Instagram library music.
