Layer skincare from the least irritating, rinse-off step to leave-on treatment, moisturizer and daytime protection. In the morning, use a gentle cleanser, any tolerated hydrating or treatment product, moisturizer and broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher. At night, cleanse, apply one selected active according to its label or prescription, then moisturize. Add only one new active at a time; if burning, marked redness, cracking or peeling develops, remove the newest non-prescription active and simplify your routine.
The basic layering order
Most routines need only four functions: cleansing, treatment, moisturization and sun protection. The sequence below keeps products from interfering with one another and makes it easier to identify an irritant.
| When | Order | What it accomplishes |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | Gentle cleanser → optional hydrating or tolerated treatment product → moisturizer → broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30+ sunscreen | Removes residue, delivers any morning-compatible treatment, limits dryness and protects exposed skin. |
| Evening | Gentle cleanser → one active treatment → moisturizer | Removes sunscreen and makeup, applies the selected treatment without stacking unnecessary irritants, and supports the skin barrier overnight. |
Apply moisturizer to damp skin when practical. For acne-prone skin, choose products labeled oil-free or non-comedogenic. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) specifically recommends gentle, alcohol-free products and broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher.
Morning routine: step by step
1. Cleanse gently
Use a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser with your fingertips rather than a scrub, brush or rough cloth. The AAD’s isotretinoin skin-care plan limits cleansing to twice daily and after sweating. That limit is a useful default for a multi-product routine: over-cleansing can leave skin tight and make leave-on treatments harder to tolerate.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Wet your face with lukewarm water.
- Massage a small amount of cleanser over the skin without scrubbing.
- Rinse thoroughly and pat dry; do not rub.
If you exercised or perspired heavily, cleanse afterward even if that creates a third cleansing event. Otherwise, avoid repeatedly washing simply because the skin feels oily.
2. Add hydration or a non-irritating product only if needed
A hydrating serum or similarly mild product is optional. It should solve a specific problem, such as tightness, rather than add another layer because a routine appears incomplete. Introduce one new product at a time so a reaction can be traced to a single change.
Keep this step separate from strong exfoliating acids, retinoids or acne medications unless the product directions or your clinician specifically place it in the morning. “More layers” is not the same as better treatment, and combining several active formulas makes irritation harder to diagnose.

Some treatment products are designed for morning use, while others are intended for evening application. Follow the label or prescriber’s instructions instead of moving a product to the morning automatically. If you already use a potentially irritating active, do not add another strong active at this step merely to save time.

4. Moisturize
Apply a non-comedogenic moisturizer, especially when the skin feels dry, tight or flaky. Moisturizer is not just a cosmetic finish: AAD guidance notes that daily moisturizer can help skin tolerate drying acne medicines such as benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, adapalene, tazarotene, tretinoin and isotretinoin.
Spread a thin, even layer rather than rubbing repeatedly over sensitive areas. If your face is still slightly damp after cleansing, moisturizer can be applied then, as recommended in the AAD isotretinoin plan.
5. Finish with sunscreen
Use a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen rated SPF 30 or higher as the final morning step. Broad-spectrum coverage addresses both major ultraviolet ranges, while water resistance helps the protection persist during water exposure or sweating; it does not make sunscreen permanent. Acne-prone skin may be more comfortable with an oil-free or non-comedogenic formula.
Apply sunscreen after moisturizer so the protective film is not diluted by later skin-care steps. Reapply according to the product label and the conditions of your day, particularly after sweating or water exposure. Sunscreen is especially important when using topical retinoids or exfoliating acids, which can leave skin more reactive to sunlight.

Evening routine: step by step
1. Remove sunscreen, makeup and surface residue
Start with the same gentle, non-abrasive cleanser. Cleanse thoroughly enough to remove the day’s sunscreen and makeup, but do not compensate for heavy products by scrubbing. If a cleanser leaves persistent stinging or a tight, squeaky feeling, replace it with a gentler option.
2. Choose one active treatment
Apply one active treatment according to its label or your prescriber’s directions. Topical retinoids are commonly used in the evening. “One active” means one treatment category for that application, not several products that happen to have different brand names.
Potentially drying or irritating categories include retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and exfoliating alpha-hydroxy acids such as glycolic or lactic acid. Strong vitamin C formulas can also be irritating for some people. Stacking these products on the same night raises practical irritation risk even when each product is appropriate by itself.

For most routines, moisturize after the active has been applied as directed. If a stronger retinoid causes irritation, a dermatologist may recommend applying moisturizer first as a buffering step. The AAD also lists using a smaller amount or using the retinoid less often as possible irritation-reduction strategies. Those changes should be made with dermatologist guidance, particularly when the retinoid is prescribed.

How to combine common actives
The safest approach is to assign each potentially irritating active its own introduction period and, when necessary, its own night. The table describes a practical framework; it does not replace a prescription label or an individualized dermatology plan.
| Active or category | Common role | Layering approach | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Topical retinoid (such as adapalene, tretinoin or tazarotene) | Prescription or over-the-counter acne treatment and skin-cell turnover support | Usually evening, after cleansing; moisturize afterward, or before it only when a dermatologist recommends buffering. | Dryness, peeling and irritation are common practical concerns. Do not alter prescribed amount or frequency without your dermatologist. |
| Benzoyl peroxide | Acne treatment | Use on the schedule directed. Keep it away from an automatically added retinoid or acid until each product is known to be tolerated. | Can be drying or irritating; moisturizer can improve tolerance. |
| Salicylic acid | Exfoliating acne treatment | Use as directed and avoid piling it onto other exfoliants or a newly introduced retinoid. | Can dry or irritate skin, especially when several actives are combined. |
| Glycolic or lactic acid | Chemical exfoliation | Reserve for a separate, tolerated routine rather than using on the same night as another strong active. | Overlapping exfoliation can produce burning, redness or peeling. |
| Strong vitamin C formula | Antioxidant treatment | Introduce by itself and use at the time directed by the product; do not assume it belongs in every morning stack. | May sting or irritate sensitive skin. AAD advises isotretinoin users to avoid adding vitamin C. |
There is no universal number of products that every face can tolerate. Irritation depends on the ingredients, strength, vehicle, frequency and your current treatment. A shorter routine with one effective active is often easier to manage than a crowded routine with several overlapping actives.
Retinol, retinoids and acids: deciding whether to separate them
“Can I use retinol and acids together?” Technically, some people can tolerate combinations, but a conservative practical rule is: do not start them together, and do not assume that combining them improves results. Retinoids and exfoliating acids can each dry and irritate skin. Begin with one, establish tolerance, and only then discuss adding another with a dermatologist if there is a clear reason.
A conservative introduction pattern
- Keep your cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen unchanged for several days so you know your baseline.
- Introduce one active at the amount and frequency on its label or prescription.
- Use no other newly introduced active during the same period.
- If the skin remains comfortable, continue the directed schedule rather than increasing frequency on your own.
- Only consider a second active after the first is well tolerated and a clinician or product directions support the combination.
Do not interpret temporary stinging as proof that a product is working. Persistent burning, marked redness, cracking or peeling indicates that the routine needs to be simplified and assessed.

Using moisturizer to reduce treatment irritation
Moisturizer placement depends on the treatment and your skin’s response. With a tolerated product, apply the treatment as directed and moisturize afterward. With a stronger retinoid that repeatedly irritates you, ask your dermatologist whether applying moisturizer first is appropriate. The AAD specifically describes moisturizer-first application, a smaller amount and less frequent use as options a dermatologist may recommend.
Do not independently change a prescription retinoid’s dose, frequency or application area. A buffering method that is suitable for one medication or skin condition may not be suitable for another. Keep the rest of the routine bland while you and your clinician adjust the treatment.
What to do when your routine burns or peels
Respond to symptoms rather than adding another “repair” active. A practical first response for irritation from a non-prescription product is:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Pause the newest non-prescription active.
- Return to a gentle cleanser, moisturizer and broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30+ sunscreen.
- Avoid scrubs, alcohol-heavy products and additional exfoliating acids while the skin settles.
- Contact a clinician if symptoms persist, are severe or involve substantial cracking, swelling or pain.
If the irritating product is prescribed, contact the prescriber instead of changing its schedule yourself. The AAD advises making retinoid frequency or amount changes with a dermatologist’s help.
Match the symptom to the likely mistake
| Symptom or pattern | Likely routine problem | Safer correction |
|---|---|---|
| Burning immediately after several new products | Multiple changes make the trigger impossible to identify and may have stacked irritants. | Stop the newest non-prescription active and return to cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen. |
| Progressive tightness and flaking | Over-cleansing, too-frequent active use or insufficient moisturizer. | Limit cleansing to twice daily and after sweating, moisturize damp skin and ask a clinician about active frequency. |
| Redness and peeling after adding an acid to a retinoid | Overlapping exfoliation and retinoid irritation. | Separate or remove the acid; do not resume both until a dermatologist advises a plan. |
| Symptoms while taking isotretinoin | Increased sensitivity makes additional actives more irritating. | Use the gentle routine recommended by your clinician; AAD advises avoiding added retinol, benzoyl peroxide or sulfur, vitamin C and alpha- or beta-hydroxy acids during isotretinoin treatment. |
Choosing products for a layered routine
Compare products on the factors that affect tolerability and usefulness rather than on the number of claims on the package.
| Comparison factor | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Irritation potential | Fragrance, alcohol and exfoliating actives | Gentle, alcohol-free choices reduce avoidable sources of stinging and dryness. |
| Comedogenicity labeling | Oil-free or non-comedogenic claims, particularly for acne-prone skin | These labels help you choose a moisturizer or sunscreen less likely to feel pore-clogging, although no label guarantees an individual response. |
| Treatment strength | Active ingredient, concentration when provided, and whether it is prescription | Higher-strength or prescription products may need a slower schedule and professional supervision. |
| Vehicle and texture | Gel, lotion, cream or ointment feel and how it behaves under other products | A comfortable product is easier to apply consistently without rubbing or piling. |
| Sun protection | Broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30+ rating | This is the key daytime protection requirement, especially when using retinoids or exfoliating acids. |
Routines for common situations
Minimal routine while introducing an acne treatment
- Morning: gentle cleanser, moisturizer if needed, then broad-spectrum water-resistant SPF 30+ sunscreen.
- Evening: gentle cleanser, the single acne treatment as directed, then moisturizer.
- Adjustment: add no second active until the first is tolerated and its schedule is established.
Dry or easily irritated skin
- Keep cleansing gentle and no more than twice daily plus after sweating.
- Apply moisturizer to damp skin and use it after treatment; ask a dermatologist whether moisturizer-first buffering is appropriate for a retinoid.
- Choose alcohol-free products and avoid simultaneous acids, retinoids, benzoyl peroxide and other strong actives.
- Use broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30+ every morning.
Skin becoming sensitive during isotretinoin treatment
- Follow your prescriber’s skin-care plan rather than adding cosmetic actives.
- Use a gentle cleanser, moisturizer on damp skin and oil-free or non-comedogenic broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30+ sunscreen.
- AAD advises avoiding added retinol, benzoyl peroxide or sulfur, vitamin C and alpha- or beta-hydroxy acids because sensitivity is increased.
When professional guidance is needed
Seek dermatologist guidance for persistent or severe irritation, or whenever a prescription treatment needs an adjustment. A dermatologist can decide whether the problem is the active ingredient, the amount, the vehicle, the frequency or an unrelated skin condition. Bring the complete product list, including cleansers, serums, acne medicines, exfoliants and sunscreen, so the clinician can identify overlapping ingredients.
Prescription retinoids and isotretinoin require particular care: follow the prescriber’s directions, use daytime sun protection and do not independently add or remove active treatments. The safest routine is the one that delivers the necessary treatment while leaving enough margin to keep cleansing, moisturizing and sun protection comfortable every day.
