There is no Windows 11 LTSC 2026 edition. As of August 10, 2026, the current release is Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024, based on Windows 11 24H2 and build 26100. Its fixed lifecycle ends October 9, 2029. The related Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 release is intended for fixed-function equipment and is supported through October 10, 2034.

Both use the normal Windows Setup process: download an official ISO, verify it, create bootable USB media, boot the target PC in UEFI mode, and perform a clean installation. However, the public Microsoft downloads are 90-day evaluations, not free permanent licenses. Enterprise LTSC requires appropriate volume licensing, while IoT Enterprise LTSC is for specialized devices such as kiosks, point-of-sale terminals, medical equipment, and industrial systems—not as a general-purpose replacement for Windows Home or Pro.

Choose the edition before downloading anything

LTSC means Long-Term Servicing Channel. It is designed to keep specialized systems on a relatively stable Windows feature baseline. LTSC still receives quality and security updates, but it deliberately avoids the normal Windows feature-update cadence. Microsoft’s guidance describes LTSC as appropriate for specialized devices whose software and hardware must remain stable, not as a general consumer debloating option. See Microsoft’s Windows lifecycle FAQ and Windows as a service overview.

Standard Windows 11 Pro or Enterprise Normal personal PCs, laptops, office computers, gaming systems, and family computers Retail, OEM, or the organization’s normal commercial licensing route Use the standard Windows 11 media when that is the intended edition Depends on the specific release and edition

For a personal PC, standard Windows 11 Pro is usually the correct legal and practical choice. Enterprise LTSC is not a retail consumer edition, and an IoT license cannot simply be used to turn a normal desktop into a supported consumer computer. A public evaluation can be used for testing, but it is not a permanent license.

Why Windows 11 26H1 does not change this answer

Windows 11 version 26H1 is not a new LTSC release and does not replace LTSC 2024. Microsoft describes 26H1 as a release for selected new devices with new silicon rather than an in-place update path for existing computers. IoT Enterprise is not supported on 26H1. The relevant information is in Microsoft’s Windows 11 version 26H1 documentation.

A note about a confusing Microsoft download-page label

Microsoft’s current Enterprise Evaluation Center wording refers to Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024 as building on 25H2, while Microsoft’s LTSC documentation and release-health information identify the release as Windows 11 24H2, build 26100. For installation and version checking, use the LTSC documentation and Windows 11 release information as the authoritative references. Select the download explicitly labeled Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024, not the ordinary Windows 11 Enterprise 25H2 ISO.

What to prepare

Hardware requirements

For a conventional Windows 11 installation, Microsoft lists these minimum requirements:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A compatible 64-bit processor or system-on-chip running at 1 GHz or faster, with at least two cores.
  • At least 4 GB of RAM.
  • At least 64 GB of storage.
  • DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver.
  • UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable.
  • TPM 2.0.
  • A 720p display of at least 9 inches with 8-bit color channels.

Check Microsoft’s current Windows 11 hardware requirements before deployment because specific OEM hardware can impose additional restrictions.

Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC also documents device-maker configurations. Its preferred baseline is 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, UEFI, TPM 2.0, enabled Secure Boot, and DirectX 12. Some specialized appliance configurations can go as low as 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage with BIOS and optional TPM/Secure Boot. Those lower figures are IoT device-maker options, not a recommendation for an ordinary laptop or desktop. See Microsoft’s IoT Enterprise system requirements.

Installation materials and safety checks

  • A second working computer if the target machine cannot download or prepare the media.
  • The correct official ISO.
  • An empty USB drive of 8 GB or larger. Microsoft’s IoT quickstart specifies at least 8 GB; using a larger drive gives more margin.
  • A complete backup of documents, browser data, application installers, license information, and any files on the target disk.
  • OEM chipset, storage-controller, network, Wi-Fi, graphics, audio, and firmware packages downloaded in advance.
  • Windows recovery media or a manufacturer recovery image. A clean LTSC installation can remove access to the existing recovery partition, especially when using the IoT evaluation media.
  • A valid Enterprise or IoT license for production use, or a plan to use the 90-day evaluation only for testing.

Physical PC or virtual machine?

A virtual machine is the safest way to evaluate LTSC. You can take a snapshot, test software, and avoid destroying a physical recovery partition. Microsoft’s IoT evaluation instructions support ISO installation in a VM.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Windows 11 VM may need virtual UEFI firmware, virtual TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, adequate RAM, and sufficient virtual storage. For a production appliance, test on the exact hardware model instead of assuming that a successful VM installation proves driver or peripheral compatibility.

Download an official Windows 11 LTSC ISO

Enterprise LTSC 2024 evaluation

  1. Open the Windows 11 Enterprise Evaluation Center.
  2. Register as required by Microsoft.
  3. Choose Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024, not the standard Windows 11 Enterprise release.
  4. Download the ISO and retain the original filename and download details for your deployment records.

The evaluation is useful for lab testing, application validation, and hardware checks. It is not a free perpetual Enterprise license.

IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 evaluation

  1. Open Microsoft’s Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC Evaluation page.
  2. Register and select the appropriate architecture.
  3. Choose x64/AMD64 for ordinary Intel- or AMD-based PCs and x64 equipment. Choose ARM64 only for compatible ARM hardware.
  4. Download the ISO and read the evaluation page’s clean-install warnings before writing it to USB.

For licensed deployments, obtain Enterprise media through the organization’s Volume Licensing Service Center or other authorized Microsoft channel. IoT media may be available through the VLSC, an eligible Visual Studio subscription, or an authorized OEM/distributor. Microsoft describes these routes in its IoT Enterprise volume licensing documentation and Visual Studio software download list.

Do not use unofficial ISO mirrors, modified debloated images, activation scripts, or pirate KMS servers. They make it impossible to establish that the installation media is trustworthy and do not provide a legitimate license.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify the ISO before creating installation media

Microsoft publishes these SHA-256 hashes for the IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 evaluation media in its official ISO hash document:

Media SHA-256
x64/AMD64 8ABF91C9CD408368DC73AAB3425D5E3C02DAE74900742072EB5C750FC637C195
ARM64 CCEC358A760C3C581249F091ED42D04F37B2B99C347B7A58257C3CC272D7982C

On a Windows computer, open PowerShell and run:

Get-FileHash 'C:UsersYourNameDownloadsWindows11-IoT-LTSC.iso' -Algorithm SHA256

Compare the result with Microsoft’s value, ignoring letter case. A mismatch means the file is incomplete, damaged, or not the expected ISO; download it again. The hashes above apply specifically to the IoT evaluation files and must not be assumed to apply to every Enterprise LTSC ISO.

Create a bootable USB

Simple method: an ISO-to-USB utility

A reputable third-party ISO-writing utility is the simplest option. It is not a Microsoft product, so download it only from the utility’s official site. Select:

  • The LTSC ISO you verified.
  • GPT as the partition scheme.
  • UEFI as the target system.
  • FAT32 where the utility supports it.

Writing the image erases the USB drive. Confirm that the selected device is the intended blank USB before starting. If the target computer is unusually old and supports only legacy BIOS, check hardware compatibility first; a modern Windows 11 LTSC installation should normally use UEFI and GPT.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s manual FAT32 method

Microsoft’s documented flash-drive method copies the ISO files to a FAT32-formatted USB. FAT32 cannot hold a file larger than 4 GB, so a large install.wim must be split.

  1. Mount the ISO in File Explorer. In this example, the mounted ISO is D: and the USB is E:.
  2. Format the USB as FAT32. Formatting erases it.
  3. If install.wim is smaller than the FAT32 limit, copy all ISO contents to the USB.
  4. If it is too large, copy the other ISO files while excluding files larger than about 3.8 GB:
robocopy D: E: /s /max:3800000000

Then split the WIM from an elevated Command Prompt:

Dism /Split-Image /ImageFile:D:sourcesinstall.wim ^
  /SWMFile:E:sourcesinstall.swm /FileSize:3800

The USB’s sources folder must contain install.swm, install2.swm, and any subsequent split files. Do not leave the original oversized install.wim on the FAT32 USB. If the ISO uses a different image format, follow the media-specific instructions rather than blindly applying this command.

Install Windows 11 LTSC from USB

1. Boot the USB in UEFI mode

  1. Shut down the target computer.
  2. Insert the bootable USB.
  3. Power on and repeatedly press the manufacturer’s boot-menu key. Common keys include Esc, Delete, F1, F2, F10, F11, and F12.
  4. Choose the USB entry that explicitly begins with or identifies itself as UEFI.

The exact key varies by manufacturer. Microsoft’s UEFI and legacy BIOS guidance explains why UEFI is preferable and why a UEFI installation normally uses GPT.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the USB does not appear, try another directly connected USB port, use the firmware’s one-time boot menu instead of changing the permanent boot order, and recreate the media if the ISO hash or copying process was questionable.

2. Start Windows Setup

  1. Choose the language, time, and keyboard layout.
  2. Select Install now.
  3. When prompted for a key, enter the organization’s matching product key. For an evaluation ISO, choose the option to continue without a product key if Setup offers it.
  4. If Setup displays multiple images, select the exact LTSC edition you licensed or intend to evaluate.
  5. Accept the license terms.
  6. Choose Custom: Install Windows only for a clean installation.

The screens can differ by edition, ISO, build, and organization policy. If Setup does not display an edition list, the ISO may contain only one image. Do not force an edition with an unrelated key or activation tool.

3. Select the correct disk

At Where do you want to install Windows?, identify the target drive by its disk number and capacity. If multiple drives are installed, disconnect unnecessary drives before installation or verify every disk carefully. This prevents Windows boot files from being placed on a different drive.

For a completely clean installation:

  1. Back up anything needed from the target disk.
  2. Select each partition on the intended target disk.
  3. Choose Delete until that disk shows only Unallocated space.
  4. Select the unallocated space and click Next.

Windows Setup creates the required EFI, Microsoft Reserved, recovery, and Windows partitions automatically. Deleting partitions permanently destroys their data and may remove the manufacturer’s recovery environment. Microsoft’s reinstallation guidance covers the consequences of reinstalling from media.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Complete OOBE

Setup will restart several times. Remove the USB when the computer begins booting from the internal drive, or select the internal Windows Boot Manager if the boot menu reappears.

During the out-of-box experience, create the required administrator account and configure network, privacy, and device settings. Account choices vary by edition, evaluation media, current build, and organization policy, so do not assume that every LTSC installation presents identical Microsoft-account or local-account screens.

For a specialized deployment, OOBE may be followed by domain join, Microsoft Entra join, Configuration Manager or Intune enrollment, kiosk configuration, shell lockdown, and application provisioning. Those are deployment decisions, not requirements for a standalone lab installation.

Fix the MBR/GPT error

If Setup says that Windows cannot be installed because the selected disk uses MBR instead of GPT, first confirm that you actually booted the USB in UEFI mode. Then use the following procedure only after verifying the disk number:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Shift+F10 in Windows Setup to open Command Prompt.
  2. Run:
diskpart
list disk
select disk <correct-number>
clean
convert gpt
exit
  1. Close Command Prompt.
  2. Refresh the disk list in Setup.
  3. Select the unallocated space on the converted disk and continue.

Microsoft documents this UEFI/GPT workflow in Windows Setup: Installing using the MBR or GPT partition style.

Troubleshoot common installation failures

The USB does not boot

  • Use the one-time manufacturer boot menu and select the UEFI USB entry.
  • Try another USB port, preferably one directly on the computer rather than through a hub.
  • Recreate the USB and verify that the ISO hash matches Microsoft’s published value.
  • Check that the USB was not accidentally reformatted after the files were copied.
  • Confirm in firmware that the machine is not being forced into an incompatible legacy-only mode.

Setup cannot see the SSD

Common causes include a missing storage-controller driver, Intel VMD or RAID mode, an incompatible firmware setting, or a failing drive. Before changing anything, check whether the SSD is visible in the firmware’s storage information or hardware diagnostics.

  1. Download the target computer’s storage, chipset, and controller drivers from the OEM on another computer.
  2. In Setup, choose Load driver if the manufacturer supplies a driver intended for Windows Setup.
  3. Check the OEM instructions for VMD, RAID, or AHCI configuration.
  4. Do not switch RAID, VMD, or AHCI modes casually if an existing Windows installation must remain bootable; changing the mode can make that installation inaccessible.
  5. Run the manufacturer’s drive diagnostics if the disk is absent from firmware as well as from Setup.

Storage behavior is hardware-specific. Prefer the computer manufacturer’s instructions over a generic internet recommendation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Setup selects the wrong edition or rejects the key

The product key must match the edition and licensing channel. A key can be rejected when the media does not contain the matching image. Microsoft explains image selection and the EI.cfg and PID.txt mechanisms in its Windows Setup edition-configuration documentation.

Stop rather than proceeding with the wrong image. Obtain matching licensed media or use the correctly labeled evaluation ISO. A generic KMS client key is not a retail key and will not legally convert a normal Pro installation into LTSC.

Windows installs but drivers or peripherals fail

Install OEM chipset, storage, network, Wi-Fi, graphics, audio, and firmware packages in that order where the manufacturer recommends it. Test touchpads, card readers, scanners, receipt printers, displays, cameras, security devices, and other business-critical peripherals before deploying the image to multiple machines.

If the finished installation still reports missing or outdated hardware drivers, Outbyte Driver Updater is an optional way to check for driver issues, while deployment-critical systems should continue using validated OEM packages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The computer no longer boots

  1. Remove the installation USB and check the firmware boot menu for Windows Boot Manager on the correct disk.
  2. Confirm that firmware is still configured for UEFI and that the internal disk is detected.
  3. Boot from the Windows installation USB and choose the recovery or repair option instead of Install now.
  4. Try Startup Repair, System Restore, or restoration from the recovery image if one exists.
  5. If the installation was experimental and the data is backed up, reinstall from known-good media rather than repeatedly changing firmware or partition settings.

If the existing recovery partition was deleted, the manufacturer may require a separately created recovery USB or a downloadable factory image to restore the original operating system.

If Windows still shows repair or startup errors after these recovery steps, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional troubleshooting aid, not a replacement for recovery media, backups, or a clean reinstall.

Activate Windows 11 LTSC legally

90-day evaluation

The public Enterprise and IoT evaluation media do not require a product key during installation. Microsoft states that the evaluation lasts 90 days. When an evaluation expires without valid activation, the desktop background turns black, a persistent non-genuine notification appears, and the computer shuts down every hour.

At that point, reinstall a properly licensed edition or apply a valid license through the appropriate Microsoft volume, OEM, or other authorized channel. Do not reset the system clock or use unauthorized activation servers and scripts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enterprise LTSC with KMS

KMS activation requires an organization-owned or organization-managed KMS host and valid volume licensing. Microsoft’s publicly documented KMS client key for Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024 is:

M7XTQ-FN8P6-TTKYV-9D4CC-J462D

Run the commands from an elevated Command Prompt only in that legitimate volume-licensing environment:

slmgr /ipk M7XTQ-FN8P6-TTKYV-9D4CC-J462D
slmgr /ato
slmgr /dli
slmgr /xpr

The key is a GVLK, or Generic Volume License Key. It tells a volume-licensed client to activate through KMS; it does not activate a retail installation, create a license, or work without access to a valid KMS host. See Microsoft’s KMS client activation documentation.

Enterprise or IoT with MAK

A Multiple Activation Key is supplied by the organization. Replace the placeholder with the organization’s actual MAK:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
slmgr /ato
slmgr /dli
slmgr /xpr

MAK activation is generally a one-time activation through Microsoft-hosted activation services. It is different from KMS, where clients periodically contact the organization’s KMS infrastructure.

IoT Enterprise LTSC activation

Microsoft’s IoT volume-deployment procedure configures Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC for KMS-based activation by default, with MAK as an alternative. The documented IoT KMS client key is:

KBN8V-HFGQ4-MGXVD-347P6-PDQGT

That key is also only a volume-activation client key. It does not grant consumer rights or make IoT Enterprise LTSC appropriate for a general-purpose PC. Follow Microsoft’s IoT Enterprise volume licensing procedure and use the organization’s actual licensing entitlement.

Post-installation checklist

  1. Open Settings → Windows Update, install all available updates, restart, and repeat until no further updates are offered.
  2. Install the OEM chipset, storage, network, Wi-Fi, graphics, audio, and firmware updates that apply to the exact device.
  3. Run winver and record the installed edition, version, and build.
  4. Confirm the edition:
DISM /Online /Get-CurrentEdition
  1. Confirm activation:
slmgr /dli
slmgr /xpr
  1. Install and test every business-critical application and peripheral.
  2. Create a recovery image or deployment baseline before applying kiosk, shell-lockdown, or security policies.
  3. Record the ISO filename, build, update baseline, driver versions, license channel, and activation method.

Current update baseline for this article

As of August 10, 2026, the normal July 14 cumulative update for Windows 11 24H2 and LTSC is KB5101650, build 26100.8875. Microsoft also published KB5121767, build 26100.8894, on July 18 as an out-of-band fix for a limited Intel Innovation Platform Framework issue affecting some Dell systems. It is not a general replacement that every reader should install blindly if the affected condition does not apply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build numbers and out-of-band fixes can change after publication. Check the current Windows release history and the device manufacturer’s guidance before creating a production baseline. LTSC means fewer feature changes—not no updates. Continue applying monthly quality and security updates.

What LTSC leaves out—and why that matters

IoT Enterprise LTSC does not include consumer features such as the Microsoft Store and inbox consumer applications. Missing Store, Xbox, Phone Link, or other consumer components after an IoT installation is therefore often an edition characteristic, not an installation failure. Do not assume that every omitted application can be restored in a supported way.

Enterprise LTSC and IoT Enterprise LTSC can also have reduced compatibility with applications and tools designed for the General Availability Channel. Microsoft and its Surface compatibility guidance warn that newer hardware and core applications may have limited functionality on LTSC. Check the Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024 feature documentation and Surface LTSC compatibility information for hardware-specific limitations.

Can you upgrade an existing Windows installation?

Do not treat the public IoT evaluation as an in-place upgrade. Microsoft explicitly directs users to use it as a replacement installation and reformat the drive.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a production Enterprise deployment, in-place upgrade eligibility depends on the source edition, target edition, architecture, licensing, hardware, and deployment method. Windows Home, Pro, standard Enterprise, Windows 10 LTSC, and an older LTSC edition should not be assumed to convert directly to Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC or IoT Enterprise LTSC. Test the exact path in a lab and verify it against Microsoft’s licensing and deployment documentation.

A generic key cannot turn Windows Pro into a permanently licensed LTSC installation. In particular, the GVLKs shown above are for KMS clients and are not retail upgrade keys.

Is LTSC suitable for gaming?

It may run some games, but that does not make it the best gaming edition. Gaming PCs commonly depend on current graphics drivers, launchers, Store components, Xbox services, anti-cheat systems, peripherals, and frequently updated runtimes. LTSC’s older feature baseline and missing or limited consumer components can create compatibility exceptions.

For a normal gaming computer or family PC, use a properly licensed standard Windows 11 edition unless you have tested every required game, launcher, driver, and peripheral on the exact LTSC build and have a clear reason to accept the trade-offs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should you install LTSC?

  • Specialized appliance with a stable, validated software stack: LTSC may be appropriate. Choose Enterprise LTSC or IoT Enterprise LTSC according to the device’s licensing and fixed-function purpose.
  • Normal personal laptop or desktop: use standard Windows 11 Pro or the edition supplied with the computer.
  • Gaming, Microsoft Store, Xbox, Phone Link, or broad consumer-app use: do not assume LTSC will behave like Pro; standard Windows 11 is generally the safer choice.
  • New hardware: verify drivers and firmware against the Windows 11 24H2/LTSC baseline before deployment. A device that technically boots may still lack supported drivers or complete functionality.
  • Multiple specialized devices: validate the exact image, drivers, applications, peripherals, update process, recovery method, and activation infrastructure on a pilot device before cloning or deploying widely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Windows 11 LTSC 2026 available?

No. As of August 10, 2026, the current LTSC release is Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024 and its IoT counterpart, Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024. Windows 11 26H1 is a separate release for selected new devices, not a new LTSC edition.

Can I legally use Windows 11 LTSC on my personal computer?

A 90-day evaluation can be used temporarily for testing, but it is not a permanent license. Enterprise LTSC requires the appropriate commercial licensing, and IoT Enterprise LTSC is licensed for fixed-function specialized devices rather than general-purpose personal computers. Standard Windows 11 Pro is normally the appropriate choice for a personal PC.

Can a generic key convert Windows 11 Pro to LTSC?

No. The publicly documented LTSC keys are GVLKs for KMS clients. They do not provide a license, do not activate retail Windows without a valid KMS environment, and should not be used to convert a personal Pro installation into a permanently licensed LTSC system.

Why are the Microsoft Store, Xbox, or other consumer apps missing after installing IoT LTSC?

IoT Enterprise LTSC intentionally excludes consumer features such as the Microsoft Store and inbox consumer applications. Their absence is usually an edition characteristic, not evidence that Windows Setup failed. Confirm application compatibility before choosing IoT LTSC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens when the 90-day LTSC evaluation expires?

An unactivated expired evaluation displays a black desktop background, shows a persistent non-genuine notification, and shuts down every hour. Reinstall a properly licensed edition or activate through an authorized Enterprise or IoT licensing channel; do not use clock-resetting or unauthorized activation tools.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Install Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024 only when a specialized enterprise workload and valid licensing justify it. Install IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 only on an appropriately licensed fixed-function device. For a normal personal, office, or gaming PC, standard Windows 11 is usually the better-supported choice. Whichever LTSC edition you test, use Microsoft media, verify the ISO, back up the target disk, boot in UEFI mode, perform a deliberate clean installation, and remember that a 90-day evaluation is not a permanent license.
