To install an app, open Microsoft Store, find it, and select its install control. To update apps, select Check for Updates in the Store, or turn on automatic app updates in Store settings. If you previously acquired an app, you can download it again from My Library.
Install a new app from Microsoft Store
- Open Start and select Microsoft Store, or select its taskbar icon.
- Browse Apps or Gaming, or search for the app you want.
- Open the app’s Store listing and select its install control. Follow any prompts shown on screen.
For Windows 11, Microsoft’s install guidance describes browsing the Store and selecting the app’s install control. Available listings can vary by country or region, account settings, and device compatibility. Microsoft Support: Find and install your Microsoft downloads from Microsoft Store.
Reinstall or download an app from My Library
Use this route for apps already associated with your Microsoft account, including apps you want to install on another PC. Open Microsoft Store and select My Library. An app with a Download icon has not been downloaded to that PC; select the icon to download and install it. Microsoft also recommends checking Order history if you are trying to locate an app or game you have not downloaded or installed. Check for app updates now
To look for updates manually, open Microsoft Store and select Check for Updates. The Store checks for available app and game updates. Microsoft says it makes app updates automatic to help keep apps current with security patches and features, and that users can pause updates. Turn on automatic app updates
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select the profile icon.
- Select Store settings.
- Make sure App updates is set to On.
This setting does not control every app: some publishers manage updates through their own apps. Microsoft Support: Turn on automatic app updates.
If an app is missing or will not install
Check the likely availability or account issue before trying the same download repeatedly. Microsoft lists these possible reasons an app may not appear or install:

- It is not available in your country or region.
- Family settings hide or restrict it.
- The publisher removed it from Microsoft Store.
- It is incompatible with your device.
- Your PC or account is not authorized to use it.
A restart may also be needed after a recent Windows update. For troubleshooting, Microsoft’s sequence starts with signing in to the Microsoft account, closing and reopening the app, and checking Windows Update. Microsoft Support: Fix problems with apps from Microsoft Store.
Repair Microsoft Store or clear its cache
If the Store itself is failing, first update it. In Windows 11, open Library and select Get updates. If that does not resolve the problem, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance includes repairing or resetting the Store app, then reinstalling it from Library if necessary.

You can also reset the Store cache with the built-in command:
- Press Windows key + R to open Run.
- Enter
wsreset.exeand select OK or press Enter. - Wait for the Store to reopen, then try again.
On Windows 10, the older Store route in Microsoft’s instructions is See more > Downloads and updates > Get updates; use My Library to reinstall. Interface labels can vary with Store and Windows versions. Microsoft Support: Fix problems with apps from Microsoft Store.

Windows 10 support status
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. This is separate from the steps for updating apps in Microsoft Store. Microsoft Support: Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025.
Installing programs that are not in Microsoft Store
If the app is not offered in the Store, Microsoft advises downloading programs only from publishers and retail websites you trust. Microsoft Support: Stay protected with Windows Security.
