You can host a persistent dedicated server for The Forest by installing its separate Steam dedicated-server tool, configuring its server settings, and opening the required ports if players will connect from outside your home network. The available detailed setup guide dates to 2019, so treat its values as a starting point and verify them against the files installed on your server.
What you need to know before you start
The Forest and its dedicated-server program are separate Steam apps. The game is app ID 242760; the dedicated-server tool is app ID 556450. You install and run the tool on the machine that will host the world. Players connect to the server, rather than joining a session hosted by your ordinary game client.
The tool is free to download according to SteamDB’s record, which lists it as a released, Windows-supported tool associated with the game. SteamDB’s public-branch metadata shows a build timestamp of January 21, 2019. Its record update on October 13, 2026, does not mean the server software received a new build in 2026.
- A Windows machine must stay on and connected for the server to be available. A dedicated computer is convenient, but no particular hardware requirement is established.
- Use the server’s configuration file or launch parameters to set the world and server options.
- For players connecting over the internet, configure the server’s local IP and allow the documented ports through the machine’s firewall and, when applicable, the router.
- Back up the save and configuration files before moving the server or changing its setup.
The most detailed procedure available is the Steam Community guide “Dedicated Server Tutorial,” posted in 2017, updated January 23, 2019, and labeled for game version v1.07. Endnight’s April 2017 announcement described dedicated-server support as experimental at that time and said correct configuration was required. Those are historical references, not confirmation of the tool’s present-day behavior.

Install the dedicated-server tool
Option 1: Install it from Steam
- Open Steam on the Windows machine that will host the server and sign in.
- Open Library, then use the library filter or category menu to show Tools. Endnight’s historical announcement identified this as the location for the dedicated-server tool.
- Find The Forest Dedicated Server and install it. If the tool does not appear, check that the library is showing Tools rather than only games.
- Let Steam finish downloading the tool before trying to launch or configure it.
Option 2: Use SteamCMD
The 2019 community tutorial also documents a SteamCMD installation route. This is useful for a machine managed without the Steam desktop interface, but the available material does not establish that every old command or path remains unchanged in 2026. Follow current SteamCMD instructions for installation and authentication, identify app 556450, and check the files SteamCMD actually downloads. If a command in the older guide fails, do not assume that the app ID or server is unavailable; first check the current SteamCMD syntax and its output.
Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes the general distribution of dedicated game servers, but it does not make the dated Forest-specific guide current. In either installation route, use the installed tool’s files as the authority for exact filenames and settings.
Before you launch: keep a record of the setup
Decide whether this is a fresh world or a continuation before configuring the server. Write down the server name, intended player limit, selected difficulty, save slot, and whether you need a password. This simple record helps distinguish a deliberate change from an accidental one if the server starts with different settings later. Keep the record private if it includes passwords or other access information.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →There are two documented ways to supply server settings: launch parameters and Server.cfg. The old guide’s example launch string includes options for the local IP, Steam/game/query ports, server name, player limit, difficulty, initialization type, and save slot. Those parameter names include -serverip, -serversteamport, -servergameport, -serverqueryport, -servername, -serverplayers, -difficulty, -inittype, and -slot. Treat these as documented guide-era examples, not a guaranteed current command line. Check the installed files before copying them into a shortcut or startup script.
If you use a saved launch command, retain a private copy so you can compare it with the config file during troubleshooting. The guide says command-line arguments take precedence over matching configuration-file values. A disagreement between the two can therefore make the server’s effective settings differ from the values you see in Server.cfg.
Launch once, then configure the server
The 2019 guide says the server creates Server.cfg on its first launch. It gives this Windows location, with USER standing for the Windows account name:

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchCheck that location after the initial launch. If it is absent, search the installed server files and the Windows user profile for Server.cfg; the old path may not match a different account, install, or build. Before editing, stop the server and make a copy of the configuration file and the save directory. The tutorial says command-line options override matching values in the configuration file, so a setting that appears correct in the file can still be superseded at launch.
Configure a setting in one place where practical. If you use both the file and launch parameters, record which source takes precedence and verify the effective setting after startup. The guide’s documented keys and defaults are version-era details; confirm the exact current spelling and accepted values in the configuration generated by your installed build.
Set the identity and access details
- Server name: Choose a name your group can recognize. Avoid assuming that a name in the file is effective if a launch parameter also supplies a name.
- Player limit: The tutorial lists eight as its default. Treat that as the guide’s default, not an independently verified 2026 limit. Set a value supported by the installed version.
- Password and admin password: Use the relevant password options if you want to limit entry or administer the server. Store credentials privately and give players only the access they need.
- VAC: The guide includes a VAC setting. Verify its current key and behavior in the generated configuration before relying on it as an access-control measure.
Choose the world and persistence settings
- New or continued game: The guide documents an initialization setting for starting a new game or continuing one. Choose deliberately: the wrong choice can create a different world instead of loading the one your group expects.
- Save slot: The guide documents save slots 1–5. Match the slot to the world you intend to run, and back up the save files before changing slots or moving the server.
- Autosave: Set the interval using a value supported by the installed version. The tutorial includes an autosave option but does not establish a current recommended interval.
- Difficulty and game modes: The tutorial lists difficulty and game-mode options. Verify valid values in the installed configuration; do not copy an old key or value blindly.
- Logging: Logging options can help diagnose startup and connection problems. Keep logs available while troubleshooting, and check their location in the installed files.
For a first setup, change only the settings you understand, then start the server and check its output before making further edits. If it fails to start or does not load the expected world, compare the launch options with the config first; then confirm the initialization choice and save slot. Change one value at a time and keep the backup unchanged so you can return to the earlier setup.
Keep the Steam game-server token private
The tutorial describes creating a Steam game-server account for The Forest using game app ID 242760, then placing its login token in the serverSteamAccount configuration entry or corresponding launch parameter. Treat the token as sensitive account data: never paste a real token into a public post, screenshot, or shared command. If you move hosting machines, update the configuration privately and preserve the associated save and settings files. The archived Docker project also warns that token/configuration omissions can interfere with intended save behavior.
The guide points operators to Steam Game Server Account Management to create the account ID/token. Follow the current Steam process rather than sharing a token with players or placing it in a public troubleshooting request. When asking for help, redact the token and any passwords from configuration excerpts and screenshots.

Allow players outside your home network to connect
The old tutorial documents these default communication ports and says to open them for both TCP and UDP in the router and firewall:
| Purpose in the guide | Documented port | Protocol in the guide |
|---|---|---|
| Steam communication | 8766 | TCP and UDP |
| Game communication | 27015 | TCP and UDP |
| Query communication | 27016 | TCP and UDP |
These are the tutorial’s defaults, not proof that your server is currently using them. Check the active configuration and launch options first. If you changed a port, allow the configured port instead of forwarding the old default. The local IP belongs in the server’s local-network configuration; the public address players use from outside your network is different.
- On the host, identify its local-network IP address and reserve or otherwise keep that address stable using the controls available on your network. The tutorial specifically says to set
serverIPto the server’s local address when a router is involved. - In the host computer’s firewall, allow the server’s configured ports and protocols. The guide specifies TCP and UDP for each of its three default ports.
- If the host is behind a router, forward the configured ports to the host’s local IP address. Router interfaces vary, so use the router’s own port-forwarding controls rather than assuming a universal menu path.
- Start the server and have a player on a different network try to connect using the public address and the connection method supported by the game. A test from inside the same home network does not establish that internet access works.
Think of the local and public addresses as serving different purposes. The server uses its local address on your home network, and the forwarding rule sends incoming traffic to that local machine. Players outside the home network need the public-facing address and the configured connection method. Do not give an outside player the host’s local address as though it were the internet address.
If external players cannot connect, check the basics in this order: the server is running; its configured ports match the firewall and forwarding rules; the forwarding destination is the host’s current local IP; and no launch argument is overriding the settings in Server.cfg. The available guide does not establish how every router, internet provider, or firewall handles inbound connections, so a failure at that layer may require checking the specific network’s configuration.
Keep the world available and protect your save
A self-hosted server is persistent only while its host machine, server process, and network connection are available. Plan how you will restart the process after a reboot, install updates, and recover the world if a configuration change goes wrong. Before changing machines, moving folders, changing save slots, or experimenting with launch parameters, stop the server and copy the save and configuration directories to a separate safe location.
When an update is offered, check the installed build and the server’s startup output rather than assuming that an old tutorial matches it. Endnight’s 2018 patch announcement historically asked server operators to restart and update after game patches; that is useful context, not a statement of current 2026 policy. The same historical announcement noted incompatibility with Oxide at that time. Do not treat that 2018 compatibility note as a current compatibility matrix.

Windows, Linux, and the age of the setup instructions
SteamDB lists Windows support for the dedicated-server tool. No currently maintained native Linux build is established by the available sources. A community Docker/Wine project documents a Linux-container approach, but its repository was archived on March 19, 2026. That makes it an archived community workaround, not evidence of official or actively maintained Linux support. Anyone considering it should expect to handle the container’s configuration and troubleshoot it independently, and should make verified save backups before testing.

The date distinction matters: the Steam Community procedure was last updated January 23, 2019, for v1.07; SteamDB reports the public-branch build timestamp as January 21, 2019; and the later September 2026 SteamDB record update is metadata, not a newer build date. Use the guide to understand the general setup, but verify keys, defaults, paths, ports, and behavior in the downloaded tool.

The fastest way: a hosted server
A managed host is an alternative to configuring and maintaining a server on your own machine. Compare current service details, locations, backups, migration options, support, and pricing before choosing; plans and features can change over time.
For a Forest server, review the current game-specific offering, available locations, included backups, and migration process before ordering. A hosted setup can spare you the home-router port-forwarding and machine-maintenance work, while self-hosting gives you direct control over the Windows machine and its files. If you would rather skip the router work, Godlike.Host offers The Forest server hosting with free DDoS protection, up to three free backups a day with restore, SFTP/FTP access and 24/7 live chat or ticket support, all managed from its own game panel; see the current plans for details. Compare any provider’s present terms rather than relying on old directory listings.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I host a dedicated server for The Forest?
Install the separate dedicated-server tool (Steam app 556450), launch it once so it can generate its configuration, then review Server.cfg and the startup options. Configure the world and access settings, keep a backup, and open the configured ports in the host firewall and router if players will connect from outside your network.
Recommended Free Tools
Is The Forest Dedicated Server free, and where do I find it?
SteamDB lists the tool as free to download. Endnight’s historical instructions put it in Steam Library → Tools. The server tool is app 556450; the game itself is app 242760.
Best Value
- Beautiful Hidden Object scenes
- Lushly detailed and unique landscapes to discover
- Meet characters that explore the world along with you
- Use your unique magical ability to solve puzzles and uncover clues
Which ports should I open for The Forest server?
The 2019 Steam Community guide lists 8766 for Steam communication, 27015 for game communication, and 27016 for query communication, using TCP and UDP for each. Verify the actual ports in your installed configuration and launch options before adding firewall or router rules.
Can I run The Forest dedicated server on Linux?
The available SteamDB record lists Windows support, and no currently maintained native Linux server is established by these sources. An archived community Docker/Wine project documents a Linux-container workaround, but it was archived in March 2026 and should not be treated as actively supported.
Does the guide’s eight-player default still apply?
Eight is the default listed by the 2019 guide, not an independently confirmed current limit. Check the generated configuration and the installed build for the supported player setting.
Is the 2019 server guide current for 2026?
Use it as a baseline, not a guarantee. It was updated January 23, 2019, and labeled for v1.07; SteamDB reports a January 21, 2019 public-branch build timestamp. A later SteamDB record update does not establish that the server build changed.
Should I self-host or pay for managed hosting?
Self-hosting gives you direct control of the machine, configuration, and files, but you maintain the server and arrange external access through your firewall and router. Managed hosting may remove some machine and home-network work. Compare current prices, locations, support, configuration access, backups, and migration terms before choosing.
The Bottom Line
Install the separate Windows server tool, verify its generated configuration, and treat the 2019 guide’s settings and ports as starting points rather than guaranteed 2026 defaults. Back up the save, protect the Steam server token, and configure the firewall and router only for the ports your installed server actually uses.
