Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Truly free, continuously online Minecraft hosting is uncommon. Most “free 24/7” offers either sleep when nobody is playing, require a renewal or advertisement, impose short sessions, or limit RAM and players. If you need a server that stays available at all times without paying a hosting provider, self-host it on a computer you control. That removes hosting-plan limits, but uptime then depends on the machine, electricity, internet connection and router.
This guide separates provider claims from dependable options, shows how to launch a Java server yourself, and explains which free tiers are actually suitable for your group. The provider details below were checked on October 14, 2026; free plans can change or disappear.
What “free 24/7” really means
There are three different promises commonly described as free 24/7 Minecraft hosting:
- Always-on hosting: the process remains running even when no players are connected.
- Wake-on-join hosting: the server sleeps while empty and starts when someone joins. It may be available whenever you need it, but it is not continuously running.
- Renewal-based hosting: the server runs for a fixed period and needs a button click, activity check or advertisement to continue.
A zero-price plan can also be restricted by memory, player slots, software choices or advertising. “Unlimited players” and “no sleep” are marketing claims unless the provider documents how they are enforced in practice. Treat every free-tier specification as provisional and read the current terms before moving a world there.

Free hosted options found in 2026
The following services advertise free Minecraft hosting, but the details are provider statements rather than independently verified measurements. The table is intended to show the trade-offs, not to certify performance or reliability.
| Service | Advertised free-tier behavior | Advertised resources or limits | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minehut | Sleeping when empty; wakes when a player joins | No payment card and no stated playtime cap on the free tier | Only its paid Ultimate plan is described as continuously online, so the free tier is not 24/7 always-on |
| FreeGameHost.xyz | Advertises no sleep mode | 4 GB RAM and unlimited players | The service says it is ad-funded; those figures are self-reported and may change |
| Tick Hosting | Renewal required | Advertises up to 8 GB RAM without a card | Its MC Advanced free listing says renewal is required every six hours |
| OuiHeberg | Stays online when activity is confirmed once a month | Lists 8 GB RAM and two vCores | The comparison table caps free servers at four players, despite the relatively large resource figures |
| Gaming4Free | Three hours free, extendable by watching advertisements | Up to 24 hours of uptime | A 24-hour maximum is not continuous 24/7 hosting |
| Minefort, ScalaCube, FalixNodes and PlayFreeHost | Listed as free options in 2026 comparison articles | Detailed limits were not established for this comparison | One summary describes Minefort as having no timeout, but that provider-friendly description was not independently verified |
Across comparison summaries, free allocations range from approximately 1.7 GB to 8 GB of RAM. That range is usually adequate only for a small vanilla world; heavily modded servers, large render distances and many simultaneous players need more headroom. Some services sleep when empty, others require periodic renewal or activity confirmation, and providers can alter or withdraw ad-funded tiers.

Choosing between a free host and self-hosting
Use a hosted free tier when convenience matters most
A hosted service handles the operating system, Java installation, public address and most networking. It is the quickest route for a private vanilla world, a short-term event or a group that cannot leave a computer running. Accept that the server may stop while empty, lose its address, show advertisements or require a renewal. Confirm the maximum player count and backup/export procedure before uploading an important world.
Self-host when “always running” is non-negotiable
A computer at home or in a spare office can run the server continuously without a hosting subscription. This is the only route in the available evidence that can provide genuine always-on operation at zero hosting cost. It is not cost-free in a broader sense: the machine consumes electricity, your connection can fail, and a router or internet provider may block inbound connections. You are also responsible for updates, backups, security and recovery.
Use a hybrid approach for reliability
You can develop and test locally, export periodic world backups, and use a free host only for occasional sessions. This avoids committing a long-running world to a plan whose rules may change. Keep a dated copy of the world folder whenever you migrate between machines or providers.
How to run a Java server yourself
These steps apply to a standard Minecraft: Java Edition server. The exact Java requirement depends on the server release. A third-party guide claims that the latest release requires Java 25 and that a Java 21 server cannot run on Java 8; those version claims are low-confidence and should not replace the current server documentation. Install a runtime that matches the JAR you download.

1. Prepare a machine that can stay on
- Use a desktop, laptop or spare computer that can remain powered for the hours you want the server available.
- Prefer wired networking or a strong, stable wireless connection.
- Disable sleep and hibernation for the account running the server, and make sure the machine restarts automatically after a power interruption if your operating system supports that.
- Reserve enough memory for the operating system as well as Minecraft. Do not allocate every gigabyte to Java.
Self-hosting uptime is bounded by your power, network and hardware. A hosted provider may have better connectivity, but its free tier can impose the sleep and renewal rules shown above.
2. Download the server JAR
Obtain the server JAR for your intended Java Edition version from the current download page at minecraft.net. Keep the JAR in a dedicated, empty folder so that generated configuration files and world data are easy to back up. The current download page should be treated as authoritative for the filename and supported Java version.
3. Install the matching Java runtime
Install a supported Java runtime, then verify that the command available in your terminal is the one you expect:
java -version
If the version shown does not match the server release’s requirement, install the correct runtime or adjust your system path before troubleshooting the server itself.
4. Launch once to generate the files
Open a terminal in the server folder and start the JAR. Replace the filename in the example with the file you downloaded:
java -Xms2G -Xmx4G -jar server.jar nogui
The memory values are examples; choose values that leave the operating system usable. The first launch normally creates configuration files, a world folder and eula.txt, then stops because the EULA has not been accepted.

5. Accept the EULA
Open eula.txt, change eula=false to eula=true, save the file and read the agreement at aka.ms/MinecraftEULA. Minecraft server administrators must agree to the End User License Agreement before the server can start. The agreement covers server installation and online play; it also restricts distributing Mojang content unless Mojang agrees.
6. Start the server again
Run the same command a second time. Wait for the console to report that the server has finished loading before trying to connect. Stop it cleanly from the console with:
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Do not terminate the process by closing the window while the world is saving; an unclean stop can damage the world or lose recent changes.
7. Configure access before inviting people
Keep the whitelist enabled for a private server. One setup guide reports that new servers have it enabled by default, but verify the value in server.properties and the console state rather than assuming. From the server console, the usual commands are:
whitelist on
whitelist add PlayerName
Use strong, unique credentials on the operating-system account and limit who can access the server console. Give operator privileges only to people who need them.
8. Make the server reachable
Players on the same local network can usually connect using the host computer’s private address. For players outside your home, configure the router to forward the Minecraft server port shown in server.properties to the host computer’s private address, then allow the Java process through the operating system firewall. Many Java servers use port 25565 by default; verify the actual value in your file before creating a forwarding rule.

If outside players still cannot connect, your internet provider may use carrier-grade NAT, or the router may be blocking inbound traffic. In that situation, a hosted service or a private networking solution may be more practical than repeated port-forwarding changes.
Keeping a self-hosted server online
Run it as a managed background service
Starting the JAR in a terminal works for testing, but a 24/7 server should restart after reboots and continue running after you disconnect. On Linux, use a service manager such as systemd or a terminal multiplexer; on Windows, configure a scheduled task or service wrapper to launch the command at startup. Test a deliberate reboot and confirm that the world loads without manual intervention.
Monitor storage, memory and logs
- Keep free disk space for world growth and log files.
- Watch the console for out-of-memory errors, repeated crashes and save warnings.
- Do not increase Java’s maximum heap blindly: allocating more than the machine can provide causes swapping or operating-system instability.
- Record the Minecraft version, Java version and installed server-side modifications so a rollback is possible.
Back up the world
Stop the server cleanly, copy the complete world folder and retain several dated versions on a different disk or machine. A backup made while files are actively changing may be incomplete. Test restoring a copy before you depend on it after a failure.
Plan for changing addresses
A residential public IP can change after a router restart or provider maintenance. Give players the current address through a trusted channel, or use a hostname service that you control if your network setup permits it. Never publish the server address alongside administrator credentials or other private information.

The server shuts down when nobody is playing
This is expected behavior for sleep-when-empty plans such as the free Minehut tier. It is not a fault you can fix in settings. Choose a plan explicitly advertised as always-on, move to self-hosting, or accept the wake-up delay.
The server stops after a few hours
Check whether the plan requires renewal. Tick Hosting’s listed MC Advanced free offer says renewal is needed every six hours, while Gaming4Free describes three-hour sessions extendable with advertisements and a maximum of 24 hours. A reminder or automation may help only where the provider allows it; it cannot turn a fixed-window plan into guaranteed 24/7 service.
Players cannot join even though the console is running
- Confirm that the server finished loading and is listening on the port in
server.properties. - Test a local connection from the host machine or the same network.
- Check the operating-system firewall and router forwarding rule.
- Verify that the public address has not changed.
- Ask the internet provider whether inbound connections are blocked by carrier-grade NAT.
The first launch exits immediately
Read the terminal output. The usual setup blockers are an unaccepted EULA, a missing or incompatible Java runtime, a misspelled JAR filename or insufficient file permissions. Confirm that eula=true is saved in the same folder as the JAR and run java -version before changing memory settings.
The world lags or crashes with a small group
Check the free plan’s RAM and player cap before changing the world. Free allocations in comparison summaries range from about 1.7 GB to 8 GB, and OuiHeberg’s listed free tier is capped at four players. Lower view and simulation distances, remove unnecessary modifications and reduce simultaneous players. If the provider advertises “unlimited” slots, ask what practical CPU and memory limits still apply.

Ad-funded and promotional tiers can be modified or withdrawn. Keep regular world exports and record the provider’s current limits when you create the server. A backup lets you move to another host or your own machine without losing progress.
Understanding Minecraft’s EULA when hosting for friends
Accepting the EULA is a required startup step, not an optional checkbox. The agreement addresses server installation, online play and the use of Mojang content. Do not redistribute Mojang files or imply that your server is official. If you charge players or sell in-game benefits, read the current EULA and related commercial-use rules yourself; a third-party guide’s claim that enforcement limits servers to cosmetic items was not independently verified here and should not be treated as a complete legal interpretation.
A practical decision checklist
- Need a world online while empty? Eliminate sleep-when-empty and fixed-session plans; self-host or select a paid always-on plan.
- Need no credit card? Minehut, Tick Hosting and other listed services advertise card-free entry, but check whether renewal or player limits apply.
- Have four or fewer players? A capped plan such as the one OuiHeberg lists may fit, provided its monthly activity confirmation is acceptable.
- Need mods or a larger world? Compare the actual RAM allocation, CPU share and software support. The broad 1.7–8 GB free range may be insufficient for a demanding modpack.
- Want predictable control? Self-hosting gives you the files, settings and backups, at the cost of electricity, maintenance and network responsibility.
- Cannot leave a computer on? Use a hosted service, but document its sleep, renewal, advertisement and data-retention rules before inviting players.
For a small, occasional server, a free host can be convenient if everyone understands the wake-up or renewal behavior. For genuine continuous availability at no hosting charge, run the Java server on a machine you control and engineer the power, networking, backups and restart process around it.
