How do you make your Instagram account private?

What changes after you turn on Private account?
A private account requires people who do not already follow you to send a follow request, and you decide whether to approve or deny each request. Instagram explains the follower-request model in its official private-account guidance.

How do you hide the lists from one specific person?

How do you remove a follower?
- Open your Instagram profile.
- Tap Followers.
- Find the person you want to remove.
- Tap Remove next to the username.
- Confirm the removal if Instagram asks.
Instagram says the removed person is not notified. The official follower-removal instructions describe this feature specifically for private accounts, so do not treat Remove as a way to make a public account’s lists private. On a public account, the person may still find the profile and follow again, depending on later actions.
Removing someone is appropriate when the person is simply an unwanted follower and you want a lower-conflict option. If the person is harassing you, repeatedly re-following you, impersonating you, or monitoring you, blocking is the stronger option.
How do you block someone?
- Open the person’s Instagram profile.
- Tap the options menu in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Block.
- Confirm the block and select any additional blocking option Instagram presents.
Instagram’s blocking documentation says blocked people cannot see your photos or videos or search for your Instagram account, and Instagram’s blocking-details guidance says the person is not notified. Instagram may also offer to block other existing or newly created accounts associated with that person.
Blocking prevents the blocked account from accessing your profile through that account. Do not interpret blocking as a guarantee that no indirect information can ever be seen through another account, public repost, screenshot, or external source.

- Unfollow sensitive accounts: Unfollowing is the reliable way to remove an account from your own Following list, but it does not hide the rest of the list.
- Use a separate private personal account: A public professional account can preserve reach while a private account keeps personal connections separate.
- Accept the visibility trade-off: Keep the main account public when discoverability, audience growth, or work-related reach matters more than relationship privacy.
Instagram does not document a per-entry concealment setting for selected accounts in the Following list, nor a control that hides the lists from approved followers only. To exclude an approved follower, remove or block that person, or use a separate private account.
What if you have a Business or Creator account?
Instagram says professional accounts—both Business and Creator accounts—cannot be set to private. To use private mode, switch the account back to a Personal account first. The restriction is documented in Instagram’s professional-account privacy guidance.
- Open your profile and tap the menu.
- Open Business tools and controls or Creator tools and controls.
- Tap Switch account type.
- Choose Switch to personal account.
- Confirm the change, then return to Account privacy and turn on Private account.
The exact menu name can differ between Business and Creator accounts and across app releases. Instagram warns that switching away from a professional account removes access to professional tools such as Meta Business Tools, Meta Ads Manager, and in-app insights. Can you hide your follower and following counts?
No. Private mode does not hide the numeric follower and following totals. Instagram identifies the number of followers and the number of accounts you follow as public profile information for both public and private accounts. The official profile-information guidance distinguishes this information from the content and relationship access controlled by privacy settings.
That means a private account may limit who can inspect posts and connections, while the profile can still display numbers such as “Followers” and “Following.” Instagram does not document a supported setting for removing or concealing those counts.

How do you troubleshoot missing privacy controls?
The Account privacy option is missing
Check whether the account is a Business or Creator account. Professional accounts cannot be private, so use the account-type controls to switch to Personal first. Then reopen Settings and privacy and search for Account privacy.
The menu labels do not match these steps
Instagram changes navigation labels and placement across app releases, platforms, and account types. Update the app if appropriate, then use Instagram settings search for “Account privacy” or “Private account.” Do not assume that iPhone, Android, Instagram Lite, mobile web, and desktop web display identical menus.
The person still appears after you made the account private

You removed someone but they can still find the public account
Removal ends the current follower relationship but does not make a public account private. Switch to Private account if you want new access to require approval, or block the person if you do not want that account to access or search for your profile.
You used a follower tracker or list-viewer service
Instagram does not provide third-party services with a supported way to create a list-only privacy setting. Do not give your Instagram password to follower trackers, unfollower tools, growth services, or “private list viewer” apps. If you already authorized a suspicious service, review connected-app access in Instagram, remove access you do not recognize, change your password, and enable two-factor authentication.
