You can group by package names, supported dependency types, or semantic-version update level; GitHub also documents groups that consolidate version updates across ecosystems. Grouping changes how updates are presented for review—it does not establish that the combined changes are safe or compatible.
What grouped version updates do
Grouped version updates let repository maintainers control how Dependabot organizes eligible version updates into pull requests. Instead of receiving a separate pull request for every update, you can define groups that collect matching updates. This can reduce the number of pull requests or keep related packages together, while narrower rules can preserve separation between changes with different roles or risk.
GitHub announced general availability on August 24, 2023. The announcement described grouping by package name patterns, dependency type, and semantic-version update level. Read the GitHub Changelog announcement.
Where to configure version update groups
Groups belong inside the relevant package ecosystem entry in dependabot.yml. The standard repository path is .github/dependabot.yml. The file needs a version: 2 declaration and an updates entry for each ecosystem you want Dependabot to check. Each entry specifies the package ecosystem, manifest directory, and schedule. You need write access to configure the file. GitHub’s version updates setup guide explains how to enable the jobs.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This simplified example illustrates documented keys; confirm support and valid options for your ecosystem in the Dependabot options and troubleshooting documentation before using a production configuration.

Choose grouping rules for your review workflow
Grouping is a workflow choice: broad groups mean fewer, potentially larger pull requests; narrower groups keep more changes isolated. The available grouping dimensions let you tune that balance.

| Grouping choice | How it works | Review trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Package names | Use patterns to collect selected packages or package families. | Useful for related packages; selected patterns keep unrelated dependencies separate. |
| Dependency type | Where the ecosystem supports the distinction, group development or production dependencies. | Keeps dependency roles distinct, or groups updates serving the same role. |
| Semantic-version level | Group patch, minor, or major updates. | Lets you separate update sizes rather than combining them into one broad group. |
| All packages versus selected packages | A broad pattern such as * can match all package names; more selective patterns limit the group. |
Broad matching reduces pull request count but makes each group broader to review. |
Group rules are configured per ecosystem entry. A lower pull request count does not guarantee that updates work together; review and test the resulting changes as you would other dependency updates. GitHub’s announcement describes the grouping controls and their purpose.
How version groups differ from security groups
Version update grouping applies to routine version update jobs configured in dependabot.yml. Security updates target vulnerable dependencies and have separate setup requirements and configuration; do not assume a version update group enables security grouping.

GitHub’s current security updates guide lists the dependency graph, Dependabot alerts, and Dependabot security updates as prerequisites. Security grouping can be enabled in repository or organization settings, or tailored with rules using applies-to: security-updates. When a dependency matches more than one security group, GitHub evaluates configured rules in file order and assigns it to the first matching group. Enabling grouped security updates for the first time may also cause Dependabot to close older pull requests and open grouped replacements.
GitHub announced grouped security updates separately: public beta in December 2023 and general availability in March 2024. The December announcement is historical context, not the current setup guide; its beta-era constraints should not be treated as a substitute for current documentation. See the December 2023 announcement.

When to use multi-ecosystem groups
Ordinary version update groups are configured within an ecosystem’s update entry. For a group that consolidates version updates across ecosystems into one pull request, GitHub documents multi-ecosystem groups. These use a top-level multi-ecosystem-groups section with a schedule, and ecosystem update entries are assigned to the group. See GitHub’s multi-ecosystem updates guide for the current configuration.
