Google Messages for Web lets you read and send conversations from the Google Messages Android app in a desktop browser or on an Android tablet. It is a browser service at messages.google.com/web, not a separate Windows or macOS application.
Your phone remains part of the connection. It must have Wi-Fi or mobile data, and SMS, MMS, or RCS messages may still be subject to your carrier’s plan and charges.
What you need before setting it up
| Device | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Android phone | Android 5.0 or newer, the latest version of Google Messages, an internet connection, and Google Messages set as the phone’s messaging app. |
| Computer or tablet | An internet connection and Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Microsoft Edge. Internet Explorer is not supported. |
| Google Account | Access to the same Google Account on both the phone and the browser. |
Google’s current U.S. setup uses Google Account pairing. The older QR-code method is no longer available in the United States.

How to get Google Messages for Web in the United States
- Open Google Messages on your Android phone.
- Open Device Pairing. Tap your account menu in the top-right corner, then tap Device Pairing.
- Choose a Google Account. If Google Messages asks you to sign in, select the account you want to use. You must use this same account in the browser.
- Open the web service. On your computer, go to https://messages.google.com/web/.
- Sign in. Log in with the same Google Account selected in Google Messages.
- Confirm the emoji. Google Messages displays three emoji on the phone. Compare them with the emoji shown in the browser, then tap the matching emoji on your phone. The phone should vibrate when pairing finishes, and your conversations should appear in the browser.
If Google Messages shows a QR-code option
QR-code instructions found in older guides are out of date for users in the United States. If the app or website displays an old QR-code flow, select Switch now and continue with Google Account pairing.

How Google Messages for Web works
After pairing, the browser displays conversations from the Google Messages app. You can open threads, read messages, start conversations, and send messages using your computer keyboard.
The phone still matters after setup. Google Messages for Web uses a connection between the browser and the phone, so the phone needs an active Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection. Google does not require both devices to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network; the documented requirement is an internet connection on the computer and Wi-Fi or mobile data on the phone.

Carrier charges can still apply because the web interface does not bypass your phone’s SMS, MMS, or mobile-data service. The browser also encrypts and caches recent conversation threads, contacts, and other settings. For security, Google may automatically unpair an account after it has not been used for a few weeks.
Only one computer can be active at a time, although a Google Messages account can be paired with multiple devices.

Turn on dark mode
To use a darker interface on the computer:
- Open Google Messages for Web.
- Click More.
- Click Enable Dark theme.
How to unpair Google Messages for Web
Unpair a shared, public, or work computer when you finish. A still-paired browser could expose your conversations, contacts, and two-factor authentication codes to the next person who uses it.
Unpair from the computer
- Open Google Messages for Web.
- Click Menu at the top left.
- Click Unpair.
Unpair from your Android phone
- Open Google Messages.
- Tap the account menu.

- To remove one computer, tap Delete next to it, then tap Unpair.
- To remove every computer, tap Unpair all computers.
Fix Google Messages for Web connection problems
“Can’t connect” or conversations do not load
Work through these checks in order:
- Turn the phone’s Wi-Fi off and on again.
- Confirm that both the phone and computer have a strong internet connection.
- Restart the phone if the connection remains unstable.
- Check background data on Android. Open Settings > Network & internet > Data usage > Mobile data usage > Google Messages, then turn on Background data. Menu names can vary by Android manufacturer.
- Temporarily turn off a VPN.
- If you use Chrome, disable extensions one at a time. An extension can interfere with the web service.
- Turn off battery optimization for Google Messages. The exact location varies by phone manufacturer and Android version.
- Check whether the computer was unpaired from the phone.
- If you reset or replaced the phone, unpair the old connection and pair the current phone again.
Pairing fails because of an account mismatch
The account on the phone and the account in the browser must match. In Google Messages, open account menu > Device pairing and verify that the app is signed in. If the Google Account profile picture is missing, select Switch to Google Account pairing, then sign in to the website with that account.
You changed or reset your phone
A computer paired with the previous phone may remain associated with the old device. Unpair Google Messages for Web, then repeat the setup steps with the new or reset phone.
Messages will not send or arrive correctly
Check the underlying phone service, not just the browser:
- Google Messages is the phone’s default texting app.
- The SIM is inserted correctly, if your phone uses one.
- Your carrier supports the required SMS, MMS, or RCS service.
- The phone has cellular signal or an active data connection.
- Airplane mode is off.
- Your account or plan includes messaging access.
- If you recently moved from an iPhone, iMessage is deactivated for the phone number.
Common mistakes to avoid
| Claim | What is actually true |
|---|---|
| “I must scan a QR code.” | Not in the current U.S. setup. Use Google Account pairing and confirm the matching emoji. |
| “Both devices must use the same Wi-Fi.” | Google requires internet access on the computer and Wi-Fi or mobile data on the phone; it does not state that they must share a Wi-Fi network. |
| “The browser works independently after pairing.” | The phone remains part of the connection and needs internet access. Background data, VPNs, and battery restrictions can affect it. |
| “There is an official Google Messages desktop app.” | Google’s official instructions direct you to the browser-based service. There is no separate official Windows or macOS application provided in those instructions. |
| “Pairing never expires.” | Google may automatically unpair an account after several weeks of inactivity. |

No such requirement is listed by Google. The computer needs an internet connection, and the phone needs Wi-Fi or mobile data.

An account can be paired with multiple devices, but Google says only one computer can be active at a time.
