Short answer: Genesis: Part 1 is intentionally a no-fly map for ordinary tamed flyers. A normal Pteranodon, Argentavis or Wyvern cannot be ridden there under standard settings. Astrocetus, Astrodelphis and Gasbags are documented exceptions, while Rock Drakes and Maewings retain their gliding abilities. Genesis: Part 2 allows flying creatures. Unofficial-server administrators can override Part 1’s restriction, but that is a server setting or administrator command rather than normal official-map gameplay.

First identify which Genesis map you are playing

“Can I fly in Genesis?” has two different answers because the expansion is split into two maps. Genesis: Part 1 uses a simulated environment with a deliberate restriction on ordinary flying mounts. Genesis: Part 2 does not apply that restriction and explicitly allows flying creatures.

Map Ordinary flying mounts Documented alternatives Administrator change needed?
Genesis: Part 1 Restricted by default; normal Pteranodons, Argentavises and Wyverns cannot be ridden for flight Astrocetus, Astrodelphis and Gasbags; Rock Drake and Maewing gliding Only if an unofficial server administrator overrides the rule
Genesis: Part 2 Allowed Use the flying creature and controls available on your platform No map-wide flyer override is required

Genesis: Part 1 launched for ARK: Survival Evolved on February 25, 2020. Its flight rule is a map design decision, not a missing saddle, a tame-quality problem or a temporary debuff. Check the map name on the server or save before changing equipment or replacing a creature.

Why your Argentavis, Pteranodon or Wyvern will not fly on Part 1

On standard Genesis: Part 1 settings, riding flying creatures is restricted in the Genesis Simulation. That is why a normally rideable Argentavis can be present in your base yet refuse to function as an airborne mount. The same applies to an ordinary Pteranodon or Wyvern. The restriction affects the map’s normal rules; it is not fixed by crafting a different saddle or by leveling the creature.

The restriction also explains why troubleshooting advice that works on another ARK map can waste time here. If the mount will not let you ride, first verify the map and server rules. Only after flight is legally enabled should you investigate platform controls, stamina, saddle requirements or a remapped key.

What you can use instead on Genesis: Part 1

Astrocetus

Astrocetus is one of the three flying-creature exceptions listed for the Genesis Simulation. It is therefore a documented way to use an airborne creature on Part 1’s normal rules, unlike a standard Argentavis, Pteranodon or Wyvern.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Astrodelphis

Astrodelphis is also listed as an exception to the Part 1 flying restriction. If your goal is aerial travel on an unmodified Part 1 server, this is one of the creatures to consider instead of trying to force a conventional flyer to mount.

Gasbags

Gasbags completes the set of named exceptions. Its inclusion does not remove the wider map rule: the exception applies to the creature listed, while ordinary flying mounts remain restricted.

Rock Drake and Maewing gliding

Part 1 still permits the gliding abilities of Rock Drakes and Maewings. Gliding is not the same as powered flight: you launch from height, travel through the air and manage your descent rather than continuously gaining altitude like a conventional flyer. This makes route planning important. Use cliffs, platforms and other elevated terrain to start a glide, and identify a safe landing area before leaving one.

Gliding can solve a mobility problem without changing server rules, but it does not turn Part 1 into a normal-flyer map. A Rock Drake or Maewing remains a gliding option, not proof that Argentavises or Wyverns should be mountable.

Genesis: Part 2 allows flying creatures

Genesis: Part 2 differs fundamentally from Part 1 on this point: its reference explicitly allows flying creatures. If you are on Part 2 and a flyer will not move, check the creature’s ordinary ride conditions, your saddle, the platform’s control mapping and its stamina rather than assuming that the Genesis restriction is active.

Always include the part number when asking for help. “Genesis” alone is ambiguous, and advice for Part 2 can be wrong on Part 1 while advice for Part 1 can make a working Part 2 flyer appear broken.

Can you enable flyers on Genesis: Part 1?

Yes, but the documented override is for an unofficial server administrator or an administrator operating in a command-enabled context. The default official-style Part 1 rule remains no ordinary flyers. Changing a server setting creates a different ruleset for that server; it does not mean that standard Part 1 gameplay permits Argentavis or Wyvern flight.

Use the server configuration setting

The Genesis references document the bForceCanRideFliers setting as the configuration method for enabling flyer riding. The administrator must apply it in the server’s configuration using the syntax and configuration file appropriate to that ARK edition and hosting environment. Because configuration interfaces differ, do not paste an Evolved configuration line into an Ascended setup, or vice versa, without checking that edition’s documentation.

  • Make the change as the server owner or administrator; an ordinary player cannot enable it from the client.
  • Apply the setting to the intended server, not a different instance or single-player profile.
  • Restart or otherwise reload the server in the manner required by its host so the setting is actually active.
  • Tell players that this is an altered rule set; characters transferred from a standard server may encounter different travel limitations.

Use an administrator command in a cheat-enabled context

The Ascended reference also records forcetame as a way to ride a rideable flying creature despite the restriction. This is an administrator or cheat-context solution, not a normal player method and not a recommendation for official-server progression. It may also change ownership or tame state, so an administrator should understand the command’s broader effect before using it on a live world.

Do not treat a successful command as evidence that the map’s default rule has changed. Other players may still be unable to ride flyers unless the server-wide configuration is changed, and a reset, transfer or different server can restore the normal restriction.

Controls when flight is available

The ARK Official Community Wiki lists these default PC mount controls:

Action Default PC key What it does
Mount or dismount E Mounts the nearby rideable creature or dismounts your current mount
Land or take off Space Switches between ground and airborne movement when the creature supports it
Stop movement X Stops the mount’s movement where that creature and mode support the command

These are PC defaults, not universal bindings. Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and remapped PC layouts can use different buttons. If Space does nothing, inspect the active control scheme and the game’s key-bindings menu before concluding that the creature cannot fly. A controller preset, accessibility remap or platform-specific layout can change the input while leaving the map rules unchanged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Controls also depend on the movement mode. A Rock Drake or Maewing glide should not be expected to respond exactly like powered flight, and a Part 1 exception does not grant every behavior of an unrestricted flyer. Test takeoff, steering, landing and dismounting in a safe area before committing to a long route.

Manage stamina before and during a flight

When flight is available, it consumes the creature’s stamina. Plan to land periodically so stamina can recover instead of waiting until the mount is exhausted over dangerous terrain or water.

Before departure

  • Choose a destination with at least one safe landing point along the route.
  • Start with a recovered stamina bar rather than launching immediately after another sprint or maneuver.
  • Check the weather, terrain and nearby threats, because a forced landing is harder to manage when the ground is unsafe.
  • Carry the supplies you need for an unscheduled stop; a long flight should not depend on reaching the destination without interruption.

During the trip

  • Watch the stamina indicator continuously, especially while climbing or carrying out repeated maneuvers.
  • Land before the bar is exhausted. A planned stop gives you control over where the creature recovers.
  • Use elevated terrain for a Rock Drake or Maewing glide, but preserve enough height to reach the selected landing area.
  • If the mount becomes unresponsive, stabilize it and look for ground rather than continuing to spend stamina.

No authoritative numeric stamina distance or flight-time figure is established for these Genesis rules, so do not plan a route around a universal number. Creature stats, weight, leveling and movement choices all affect how long a mount remains airborne.

A practical decision guide for Part 1 movement

Your situation Best next step Why
Standard official-style Part 1 and you own an Argentavis, Pteranodon or Wyvern Do not keep troubleshooting the saddle; use a listed exception or a gliding creature Ordinary flyers are restricted by the map
Standard Part 1 and you need aerial mobility now Use Astrocetus, Astrodelphis or Gasbags if available These are the documented exceptions
Standard Part 1 and you have a Rock Drake or Maewing Plan a controlled glide from high ground Gliding remains available even though powered flight is restricted
Unofficial server and the owner wants conventional flyers Ask the administrator about bForceCanRideFliers That setting is the documented server-level override
Administrator testing one rideable flyer in an Ascended cheat context Use the documented forcetame method only with appropriate privileges It bypasses the restriction in an administrative context, not ordinary play

Troubleshoot a flyer that will not work

1. Confirm the map and edition

Read the server or save name and confirm whether it says Genesis: Part 1 or Genesis: Part 2. Then identify whether you are playing ARK: Survival Evolved or an Ascended edition, because administrator methods and configuration interfaces can differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Check whether the server is using default rules

On Part 1, ask the owner whether bForceCanRideFliers is enabled. If the answer is no, an Argentavis, Pteranodon or Wyvern refusing to mount is expected behavior. If the answer is yes, reconnect after the administrator confirms that the configuration was applied and the server reloaded.

3. Verify that the creature is one of the legal options

For an unmodified Part 1 server, compare the creature against the documented exceptions: Astrocetus, Astrodelphis and Gasbags. If it is a Rock Drake or Maewing, test gliding rather than looking for powered-flight behavior. A conventional flyer outside those categories requires an administrator override.

4. Check ordinary ride prerequisites

Once map legality is established, check the creature’s normal saddle or riding requirements, proximity, ownership and access permissions. These checks matter on Part 2 and on an overridden Part 1 server, but they cannot defeat a map-level restriction by themselves.

5. Check the input mapping

On PC, test E to mount or dismount and Space to land or take off. If you changed bindings, use the current mapping shown in the controls menu. On console, use the platform’s displayed controls rather than the PC keys.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Check stamina and landing conditions

A creature that can fly may still be unable to continue because its stamina is depleted or because it is in a movement state that requires landing first. Land safely, allow stamina to recover and try again. If the problem occurs only after a long trip, treat stamina management as the likely cause rather than changing the server rule.

Tek Chestpiece and other assumptions

The Genesis: Part 1 documentation states that the Tek Chestpiece jetpack is disabled in the simulation by default. Consequently, obtaining that piece of equipment does not provide a normal workaround for the map’s no-fly rule. A server administrator may run a different configuration, but the default restriction should be assumed unless the server owner says otherwise.

Likewise, the existence of a creature elsewhere in ARK does not establish that it is legal to ride in Part 1. Genesis applies its own map rules, so evaluate the creature and the server settings together.

Plan a reliable Genesis trip

  1. Write down the map part. Put “Part 1” or “Part 2” in your notes, server announcement or support request.
  2. Select the movement mode. Choose a documented Part 1 exception, a Rock Drake or Maewing glide, or a normal flyer on Part 2.
  3. Verify legality before departure. On an unofficial Part 1 server, confirm whether the administrator enabled bForceCanRideFliers.
  4. Test controls close to safety. Mount, take off or glide, steer, stop and land before carrying valuable equipment.
  5. Mark recovery points. For powered flight, identify places to land and recover stamina; for gliding, identify launch heights and reachable landing zones.
  6. Keep the default PC controls in mind. Use E, Space and X only if you are using the default PC layout; otherwise follow your remapped or console controls.
  7. Separate admin testing from normal progression. A command such as forcetame can be useful to an administrator testing a world, but it should not be presented to players as standard Part 1 gameplay.

The rule in one sentence

Part 1 is intentionally no-fly for ordinary tamed flyers, with Astrocetus, Astrodelphis and Gasbags as documented exceptions and Rock Drake/Maewing gliding still available; Part 2 allows flying, and only an unofficial administrator’s configuration or command changes the Part 1 default.
