Then check game access and compatibility, the download queue, free storage, Xbox service status, and your connection. A specific offline-install procedure applies only to a stuck disc install on Xbox One; it is not a universal fix.
Start by identifying the problem
Before changing settings, note which console you have—Xbox One, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S—and whether you are installing a new game or updating one. Also record whether the game is digital or on disc and the exact status text or error code. “Installation Stopped” describes a symptom, not its cause.
These details matter because a disc-install procedure documented for Xbox One should not be applied automatically to a digital download or a Series X|S console. If only one game is affected, its publisher’s support page may also be relevant.
Check that you can access a compatible version of the game
Make sure the console is signed in to an account that owns the game or otherwise has access to it. On Xbox One, a game that does not appear among installed titles may still be available under My games & apps > Ready to install. Microsoft also notes that some apps and games work only on specific device types, so confirm that the version you are trying to install is compatible with your console. Check Xbox services, your connection, and the download queue
Check the current Xbox service status before treating a stalled download as a console fault. Then use the console’s network test and inspect the active download or update queue. If the console offers pause and resume controls for that item, you can try them; menu labels and options can vary by console generation and system version.
This check can help distinguish a service or connection interruption from an issue limited to one game, but a stalled status by itself does not establish the cause. Follow the current on-console prompts and Xbox Support instructions for your model rather than relying on a menu path that may have changed.

Verify available storage before adding a drive
Check the console’s available storage and compare it with the space the game or update requires. Low space is one possible obstacle, not a diagnosis: do not buy a drive unless the storage check shows that capacity is the problem.

Try low-risk console checks
If access, service status, connection, queue, and free space do not explain the problem, try a normal console restart and check whether a system update is available, following current Xbox Support instructions for your console. Neither step is guaranteed to fix an install. Microsoft’s Xbox One update result indicates that a grayed-out “No console update available” means the console is already up to date; consult the current Xbox One system update guidance for the applicable instructions.

For a stuck Xbox One disc install, use the disc-specific procedure
Bethesda Support documents the following steps for a game disc whose installation is stuck on Xbox One. Keep this procedure to that scenario; it is not established as a fix for digital installs or all Xbox generations.
- On Xbox One, open Settings > System > Storage and choose the option to clear Persistent Storage.
- Fully shut down the console, unplug it from power, and disconnect it from the internet.
- With the console offline, try installing the game from the disc.
- If the install remains stuck, reconnect to the internet and continue the installation through Marketplace or the game’s Details page, as Bethesda Support describes.

Escalate using the exact error code
If the checks above do not resolve the issue, record the full error code and message, your console model, and whether the game is on disc or digital. Search current Xbox Support guidance for that exact code and console. Microsoft directs users with console installation problems to Xbox Support; if the failure affects only one game, check the game publisher’s support as well. Avoid a factory reset as an early troubleshooting step unless current, model-specific support instructions recommend it.
