If iPhone Mail says “The Connection to the Outgoing Server Failed,” it means a sending attempt could not connect to the outgoing server named in the error. That message alone does not identify the cause: your internet connection, the email provider, account credentials or settings, a security requirement, or a network restriction could be involved. Work through the checks below before removing the account; the correct outgoing-mail settings come from your email provider or administrator.
1. Check the connection and provider status
Confirm the iPhone is online
Open a website or another internet-dependent app to check that the iPhone has a working connection. Apple’s first advice for a sending problem is to make sure the device is connected to the internet: Apple’s steps for when you can’t send email on your iPhone or iPad.
Check for a provider outage
Find out which company hosts your email address, then check that provider’s service-status page or contact its support team. An error shown in Apple Mail does not, by itself, mean Apple’s services are at fault. If the provider reports an outage, wait for service to return before changing account settings.
2. Retry the message in Outbox
A failed message may still be waiting to send. In Mail, open the mailbox list and tap Outbox. Open the message, check that the recipient address is correct, then tap Send to try again. Apple notes that if Outbox is not visible, the email was sent. See Apple’s sending troubleshooting steps.

3. Verify your sign-in and outgoing-mail settings
Confirm the account credentials
Sign in to your email provider’s website using the same email address and password. This checks whether the credentials work outside the Mail app. If Mail continues to report a username or password error, Apple advises contacting the email provider or system administrator.
Get the correct SMTP settings from your provider
Ask your email provider or administrator to confirm the outgoing server settings for your specific account and whether any security policy changes how the iPhone must authenticate. Do not rely on a generic SMTP hostname, port, or security mode: the correct values depend on the provider and account.

Two-step verification or another security feature may require a special password or provider authorization instead of the usual account password. Apple describes these account-specific requirements in its guidance for setting up and troubleshooting Mail. Follow your provider’s instructions rather than guessing at settings.

4. Check whether the problem depends on the network
If sending works on one network but not another, ask the network administrator or internet service provider whether outgoing SMTP traffic is restricted. This is a specific possibility Apple documents for iCloud Mail: an ISP may block SMTP traffic over its network. Apple’s note is about iCloud Mail and does not establish that a network restriction is the cause for other email accounts. For iCloud, see Apple’s iCloud Mail troubleshooting guidance.

5. Remove and add the account only as a later step
If the connection, provider status, credentials, and provider-confirmed settings have not resolved the problem, removing and adding the account again may be a reasonable next step. First sign in to the provider’s website and confirm that your email is stored there, or save anything important elsewhere. Apple warns that previously downloaded messages may be removed from the iPhone when account settings are deleted or changed. - Verify that messages you need are available on the provider’s website or saved elsewhere.
- On iPhone, open Settings and go to the account-management screen for your iOS version. Apple’s account setup instructions show the current path and options: Set up an email account on iPhone.
- Remove the affected account, then add it again using the provider’s setup instructions and any required security authorization.
- Send a test message and check whether it leaves Outbox.
6. Contact the email provider if sending still fails
If these checks do not restore sending, contact the email provider. Share the exact error wording, the account type, whether sending fails on every network or only one, and whether you can sign in on the provider’s website. The provider can confirm its server settings, account restrictions, and any required authorization; Apple likewise directs users to the email service provider for further account-specific help.
