Check free space and identify when the PC is slow, then use the built-in Windows fix that matches the symptom. Microsoft lists limited storage, startup apps, outdated software, malware, open apps and tabs, and aging hardware among possible causes.
First, identify the slowdown and check storage
Note where the delay occurs: during startup, when opening one app, in File Explorer, while browsing online, or across Windows generally. A problem limited to one app may call for a different fix than a system-wide slowdown.
- Check File Explorer: Open This PC and review the free space on the Windows drive.
- Check Windows Settings: Open Settings > System > Storage. The category breakdown can show whether temporary files, installed apps, or another category is using space. Menu labels may differ between Windows versions.
Microsoft notes that low drive space can accompany slower performance and problems installing updates. Free space does not rule out other causes. For more detail, see Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance and its guide to managing drive space.
If the Temp folder keeps filling after cleanup
There is a specific cleanup-related case to check: Microsoft documents that after using Cleanup recommendations, the Temp folder may quickly refill with Microsoft Store .appx files and trigger a Low Disk Space error. This is a targeted response to that symptom, not a reason to keep clearing caches whenever Windows feels slow.

- Run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter.
- Press Windows+R, enter
wsreset.exe, and select OK to clear the Microsoft Store cache. - Run the Windows Update troubleshooter.
- Restart the PC, then check whether the low-space error and rapid Temp-folder refill continue.

Reduce startup and background load
Too many apps launching automatically or many open programs and browser tabs can contribute to slow performance.

- Open Task Manager and select Startup apps.
- Disable only apps you recognize and do not need to launch automatically. Avoid disabling unfamiliar entries simply to make the list shorter.
- Close programs and browser tabs you are not using, restart Windows, and check performance with only necessary apps open.
These checks may help isolate background load; they do not guarantee a particular speed increase.
Check updates and scan for malware when appropriate
- Windows and drivers: Check Windows Update, including optional driver updates, and restart if prompted. An available update does not by itself establish that outdated software caused the slowdown.
- Malware: If malware is a concern, run a scan with Windows Security. Microsoft notes that malware can consume CPU and disk resources; a scan is a diagnostic step, not proof of infection.
Use the paths and labels that match your Windows version; navigation can vary between Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Use repair or recovery tools only when symptoms point to them
Windows errors, freezing, or unresponsiveness
If Windows features fail, errors appear, or the PC freezes or becomes unresponsive, use Microsoft’s DISM and System File Checker (SFC) guidance to check for and repair missing or corrupted system files. These tools address system-file problems; they are not a general cache-clearing step.
Slowdown began after a Windows update
If the slowdown started after a recent Windows update, Microsoft’s Windows recovery guidance says uninstalling that update may help. Treat this as a symptom-specific option rather than a routine first step.

Older hardware
On a device that no longer meets current software needs, software changes may not produce a significant improvement. Microsoft lists a device upgrade as a possible longer-term option.

Storage Sense works on the system drive, usually C:. With default settings, it runs when the device is low on disk space and removes unnecessary temporary files. It does not manage Downloads or cloud content unless configured to do so. Before deleting files, review the choices—especially Downloads and previous Windows installation files—so you do not remove something you want to keep. If storage is confirmed to be the constraint, Microsoft also lists moving personal files to an external drive as an option. That can free space; it will not address startup load, malware, update problems, or damaged system files. Microsoft’s performance and storage guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. Separately, free Windows 10 software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended on October 14, 2025; that lifecycle change is distinct from diagnosing a particular slowdown.
