Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf a Microsoft PowerToys utility stops working after an update, first check whether that utility is enabled and whether the problem affects one module or all of PowerToys. Then check the update status and, if installation failed, use the update state and logs to narrow down what happened. There is no single confirmed fix for every post-update problem; the right next step depends on the utility, version, Windows build, installation method, and error.
First, identify what stopped working
Open PowerToys Settings and look at the Home view. Confirm that the affected utility is enabled, then test whether PowerToys itself opens and whether other utilities still work. If only one module is affected, keep the investigation focused on that utility rather than assuming the update damaged the entire installation.
Before changing anything, note the PowerToys version, Windows version and build, installation method (such as GitHub installer, Microsoft Store, or WinGet), the utility involved, and the exact symptom. A shortcut that no longer works may point to a disabled module or changed setting rather than an installation failure.
Compatibility can also matter: Microsoft’s PowerToys documentation notes that elevated applications can interfere with some utilities because of Windows security boundaries. If the problem occurs only in an elevated app, include that detail in your diagnosis.

Check PowerToys update status and utility settings
In PowerToys Settings, inspect the update status for an error, a download in progress, or an update ready to install. You can check for updates manually in Settings; automatic update checks run while PowerToys is running. When an automatic update is applied, PowerToys restarts and shows a toast confirming the new version is running, according to Microsoft Learn’s General settings documentation.
If a shortcut or behavior changed, verify the utility is still enabled and check whether its settings persisted. General Settings also provides settings backup and restore. PowerToys backs up settings before an automatic update and restores them if it detects corruption.

Inspect the updater’s state and logs
For a failed download or install, check the files under the current Windows user’s local app data. These locations remain per-user even when PowerToys is installed machine-wide, as explained in the PowerToys diagnostic guide.
%LOCALAPPDATA%MicrosoftPowerToysUpdateState.json— the saved update state.%LOCALAPPDATA%MicrosoftPowerToysRunnerLogsrunner-log_*.log— startup, update checks, and cleanup activity.%LOCALAPPDATA%MicrosoftPowerToysUpdateLogsupdate-log_*.log— activity fromPowerToys.Update.exe.%LOCALAPPDATA%MicrosoftPowerToysUpdates— downloaded installer files.
Open UpdateState.json and interpret its state before choosing a next step:

| State | Meaning | What to check |
|---|---|---|
0/upToDate |
No update is needed. | Continue with the affected utility’s enabled state, settings, and symptom. |
1/errorDownloading |
The download or installation failed; PowerToys will retry. | Review RunnerLogs and UpdateLogs for a specific failure. |
2/readyToDownload |
A new version was found but has not been downloaded. | Check whether the download can proceed and whether a network error is recorded. |
3/readyToInstall |
The installer has downloaded and is waiting for user action. | Return to the update surface in Settings and complete the pending install. |
4/networkError |
The GitHub API call failed. | Check the recorded error and retry the update check later. |
Look for concrete log details rather than inferring a cause from missing files. For example, a failed delete accompanied by “Access is denied” points to a file lock or permissions issue. A missing UpdateLogs directory can mean the updater did not launch or failed before its later update stage, but does not establish why. Successful cleanup can be silent, so the absence of a cleanup message alone is not evidence of failure.
Repair through the installation method you use
If the update state and logs indicate an installation problem, use a documented PowerToys installation route rather than mixing assumptions between package managers and the standalone installer. Microsoft documents GitHub releases, Microsoft Store, and WinGet; its installation guide also lists community package managers.

- Identify the current channel and scope. Check whether PowerToys was installed through GitHub, Store, WinGet, or another package manager, and whether the install is per-user or machine-wide.
- Use that channel’s upgrade route. If you use a package manager, follow its documented upgrade method. For a downloaded executable installer, select the device’s matching x64 or ARM64 build and preserve the appropriate per-user or machine-wide scope.
- Confirm support requirements. Microsoft lists Windows 10 version 2004/build 19041 or later and Windows 11, on x64 or ARM64, as supported.
- Recheck the affected utility. After the installation completes, open PowerToys Settings, verify the module is enabled, and test the original symptom.
Reinstalling is not a guaranteed fix for a utility-specific regression. If the problem remains after the update is healthy, check the release notes and issue tracker for the exact PowerToys version and utility before treating it as a broader defect. An individual report such as “An error occurred trying to install this update (to version 0.98.0)” describes that reporter’s case; it does not establish that version 0.98.0 is generally affected.

Use Report Bug from the PowerToys tray icon, or open Settings and launch the Bug Report Tool. The tool packages logs and system information in a ZIP and can prepare a GitHub issue, as described in Microsoft’s bug-reporting guide.
