Start by identifying whether you have the wired HyperX Cloud III or the Cloud III Wireless. They use different connection methods, appear under different names in Windows, and have different recovery steps. The wired model uses a USB headset connection; the Wireless model uses a USB wireless dongle. On a Windows PC, select the matching headset for both playback and recording, then check the microphone’s physical mute control. Only the Wireless model uses the dongle-pairing procedure in this guide.

Work through the checks in the order that matches your symptom. A wrong Windows device selection can look like a dead headset, while a lit mute indicator can look like a failed microphone. Conversely, a correct device selection does not prove that every fault is a settings problem, so continue to the model-specific checks when the first step does not help.

First identify the headset and the symptom

The wired Cloud III connects as a USB headset and appears in Windows as HyperX Cloud III. Its microphone is detachable, and HyperX documents a mic mute button, a USB adapter and a USB-C-to-USB-A adapter as part of the setup. Cloud III Wireless uses a USB wireless dongle and appears in Windows as HyperX Cloud III Wireless. The Wireless headset and dongle have their own status LEDs and a manual pairing process.

HyperX Cloud III – Wired Gaming Headset, PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Angled 53mm Drivers, Spatial Audio, Memory Foam, Durable Frame, Ultra-Clear 10mm Mic, USB-C, USB-A, 3.5mm – Black
  • Comfort is King: Comfort’s in the Cloud III’s DNA. Built for gamers who can’t have an uncomfortable headset ruin the flow of their full-combo, disrupt their speedrun, or knocking them out of the zone.
  • Audio Tuned for Your Entertainment: Angled 53mm drivers have been tuned by HyperX audio engineers to provide the optimal listening experience that accents the dynamic sounds of gaming.
  • Upgraded Microphone for Clarity and Accuracy: Captures high-quality audio for clear voice chat and calls. The mic is noise-cancelling and features a built-in mesh filter to omit disruptive sounds and LED mic mute indicator lets you know when you’re muted.
  • Durability, for the Toughest of Battles: The headset is flexible and features an aluminum frame so it’s resilient against travel, accidents, mishaps, and your ‘level-headed’ reactions to losses and defeat screens.
  • No playback on Windows: the headset may not be the selected playback device.
  • The microphone is missing, silent or muted: check the recording-device selection, the mic connection and the physical mute control.
  • Wireless audio stopped after using another system: the headset and dongle may need to be paired again.
  • The Wireless dongle is not recognized by PS5: compare it with another system before trying the specific powered-hub workaround.
  • A PC setting is absent on a console: the model may keep that setting in software rather than on the headset.

Do not apply Wireless pairing instructions to the wired Cloud III. The wired version has no wireless dongle to pair, and the Wireless version requires the dongle path when its connection has been lost.

Wired and Wireless troubleshooting at a glance

Question Cloud III wired Cloud III Wireless
Connection method USB headset connection, with the documented USB adapter options USB wireless dongle
Windows playback and recording name HyperX Cloud III HyperX Cloud III Wireless
Microphone check Detachable mic and mute button; the mute LED is lit when muted Mic button toggles mute; holding it for three seconds toggles mic monitoring
Wireless re-pairing Not applicable Power-off headset, place both devices in pairing mode, and wait for solid LEDs
PS5 dongle workaround Not applicable An externally powered USB hub is relevant only when the dongle works elsewhere but is not recognized by PS5

The documented material supports a troubleshooting comparison, not a performance comparison. It does not establish that one version has better sound, durability or reliability than the other.

Set the right Windows playback and recording devices

HyperX’s PC setup instructions use the same Windows route for both models. The important detail is choosing the exact endpoint that matches the headset in your hands.

  1. Open Windows Sound settings.
  2. Open the Sound control panel.
  3. In the playback devices list, set the matching headset as the default playback device: HyperX Cloud III for the wired model or HyperX Cloud III Wireless for Wireless.
  4. Open the recording devices list and set that same model-specific endpoint as the default recording device.

Use the full endpoint name rather than a similarly named monitor, speakers or another connected headset. Selecting the playback device alone is not enough when the microphone is the problem; the recording device must also be set to the matching Cloud III endpoint.

This is the first Windows check for no sound, an unavailable microphone or an application that appears to have lost the headset. It does not establish that every audio fault is caused by device selection. If the correct playback and recording devices are already selected, continue with the physical and model-specific checks instead of changing unrelated settings at random.

If only one game or call app has the problem

When Windows uses the correct Cloud III defaults but sound or the microphone fails in only one game, meeting tool or call application, inspect that application’s own input and output menus. Choose the same Cloud III endpoint there when the app offers its own device selectors. Menu names vary by application, and HyperX’s setup pages do not specify a universal set of app-specific instructions, so use the labels shown by the program you are troubleshooting.

This distinction helps isolate the fault: a problem in every Windows application points first to the system endpoint, while a problem confined to one app warrants checking that app’s own selections. Do not describe an app-specific setting as a HyperX-documented fix unless the application’s current instructions support it.

Fix a Cloud III microphone that is muted or not detected

Wired Cloud III: check the detachable mic and mute indicator

The wired Cloud III uses a detachable microphone. Confirm that the microphone is present and connected to the headset before treating a missing input as a Windows fault. Then check the microphone mute button. HyperX says the mute LED is lit when the microphone is muted and off when it is active.

  1. Make sure the detachable microphone is connected to the headset.
  2. Look at the mute indicator.
  3. If the LED is lit, press the mute control to return the microphone to its active state.
  4. In Windows recording devices, verify that HyperX Cloud III is the default recording device.

A lit LED is an intentional mute state, not proof that the microphone capsule has failed. Conversely, an unlit LED and the correct Windows endpoint do not guarantee that every application will use the microphone; an individual app can still have its own input selection.

Cloud III Wireless: distinguish mute from mic monitoring

On Cloud III Wireless, press the microphone button to toggle mute. Holding that button for three seconds toggles mic monitoring, which is a separate feature. Mic monitoring controls whether you hear your own voice; it does not serve as the microphone’s mute switch.

  1. Press the mic button once and check whether the microphone becomes active.
  2. Do not hold the button for three seconds unless you intend to change mic monitoring.
  3. In Windows, set HyperX Cloud III Wireless as the default recording device.
  4. If only one application fails, check that application’s input menu as well.

These checks separate a physical mute state, a monitoring-setting misunderstanding and a device-selection issue. They do not provide a hardware repair procedure. If the headset remains unavailable after the documented controls and endpoint selection are correct, contact HyperX for the applicable model rather than improvising a repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to check when there is no playback audio

For either model, start with the playback endpoint rather than assuming the headset has failed. The wired model should be selected as HyperX Cloud III; Wireless should be selected as HyperX Cloud III Wireless. Confirm the same choice in the Windows Sound control panel and, when applicable, in the individual game or call application.

  • HyperX Signature Comfort: Comfort is in the Cloud III's DNA. HyperX signature memory foam in the headband and ear cushions wrapped in soft, premium leatherette make for a plush, comfortable fit all around.

On the wired version, also confirm that the headset’s documented USB connection path is complete, including the applicable USB adapter. The detachable microphone is relevant to recording, not to selecting a playback endpoint, so do not confuse a mic connection problem with a no-audio problem. On Wireless, a no-playback symptom that began after the dongle stopped connecting should be handled as a connection or pairing issue, not as a wired-device selection problem.

If Windows already uses the correct endpoint and the symptom is limited to one application, focus on that application’s own input and output choices. The HyperX instructions reviewed here do not establish a universal volume, driver, privacy-permission or firmware procedure, so do not present those as guaranteed Cloud III fixes.

Re-pair a Cloud III Wireless headset and dongle

If Cloud III Wireless has lost its connection to the USB dongle, HyperX’s manual pairing sequence puts both devices into pairing mode. You need the headset powered off, the dongle plugged in, and a small tool suitable for pressing the button in the dongle’s pinhole.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Power off the headset.
  2. Enter headset pairing mode: hold the headset’s power button until its status LED blinks red and green rapidly.
  3. Connect the dongle: plug the wireless USB dongle into the system.
  4. Enter dongle pairing mode: use a small tool to press and hold the button inside the dongle’s pinhole until the dongle LED blinks rapidly.
  5. Wait for confirmation: leave both devices in pairing mode until the headset and dongle status LEDs become solid. HyperX says the devices should then be paired.

Keep the sequence specific: the headset must be powered off before its power-button step, the dongle must be plugged in before its pinhole-button step, and the end state is solid LEDs on both devices. This is a pairing procedure, not a general solution for every wireless audio problem. If the dongle is not recognized by the system at all, first identify whether the failure is the PS5-specific case described below or a broader issue.

Do not use this process for the wired Cloud III. It has no wireless dongle and no corresponding pairing state.

Troubleshoot a Wireless dongle that PS5 does not recognize

HyperX reports that USB-port behavior on some PS5 models can cause the Cloud III Wireless dongle to enter safe mode. Its support guidance notes that the behavior may affect front ports on some console models and all ports on others. Because the recommendation is symptom-specific, test the dongle on another system before buying or adding hardware.

  • Quick, Convenient Audio and Mic Controls: Dodge annoying in-game and system menus. Quickly adjust the headphone volume and mute your microphone with controls right on the Cloud III’s earcup.
  1. Cross-test the dongle: connect it to another system, ideally a PC, and check whether it works there.
  2. Confirm the condition: continue with the hub workaround only if the dongle works on that other system but is not recognized by the PS5.
  3. Use external power: connect the dongle to the PS5 through a USB hub with its own external power supply.
  4. Escalate if needed: if the externally powered hub does not resolve recognition, contact HyperX Care.

HyperX describes the workaround as a USB-port limitation solution: “A consistent workaround for the USB port limitation is to connect the USB dongle to the PS5 through a USB hub, specifically one that is externally powered,” according to the HyperX Support Center. The external-power requirement matters; a basic unpowered splitter is not the documented recommendation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The hub suggestion is narrow. It is not a general remedy for a microphone fault, a headset that cannot pair, or a dongle that fails on every device. If the dongle also fails on the comparison system, buying a hub before contacting HyperX is not supported by this troubleshooting path. There is no documented universal hub price, brand or model requirement in the support guidance; the relevant specification is that the hub has its own external power supply.

Understand why NGENUITY settings may not carry to a console

Different setting behavior can make a correctly configured headset appear inconsistent between a PC and console. HyperX documents separate rules for the wired and Wireless models.

Model Documented NGENUITY behavior Practical implication
Cloud III wired Settings configured in NGENUITY over USB are not saved onto the headset. A setting made on a PC should not be assumed to remain when the headset is used elsewhere.
Cloud III Wireless NGENUITY settings other than auto-power-off are saved software-side and do not carry over to another platform. A console will not necessarily inherit PC software settings; auto-power-off is the documented exception.

If a setting made on a PC is absent while using a console, first ask which model you own and whether that setting is stored on the headset or in software. The documented behavior does not establish that a missing setting indicates a hardware fault. It also means that changing settings on one platform may not be a portable solution when you switch platforms.

Common mistakes that make troubleshooting take longer

  • Using the wrong endpoint name: “HyperX Cloud III” and “HyperX Cloud III Wireless” are separate Windows selections. Choosing one when you own the other can leave playback or recording unavailable.
  • Checking only playback: a working playback device does not automatically make the microphone the default recording device.
  • Ignoring the mute indicator: the wired mic LED being lit means the microphone is muted.
  • Confusing mic monitoring with mute: on Wireless, a three-second hold changes monitoring; it is not the same as pressing the mute button.
  • Pairing the wrong product: the manual pairing sequence is for Cloud III Wireless and its dongle, not the wired headset.
  • Skipping the cross-device PS5 test: the powered hub is recommended only when the dongle works on another system but not on PS5.
  • Buying an unpowered hub: HyperX’s PS5 workaround calls for a hub with its own external power supply.
  • Expecting NGENUITY settings to follow you: the documented software-side behavior explains why PC settings may be absent on a console.
  • Inventing a catch-all repair: the cited HyperX instructions do not establish a universal firmware reset, driver reinstall or hardware repair sequence for every Cloud III fault.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know whether I have the wired or Wireless HyperX Cloud III?

The wired Cloud III uses a USB headset connection and appears in Windows as “HyperX Cloud III.” Cloud III Wireless uses a USB wireless dongle and appears as “HyperX Cloud III Wireless.” Only the Wireless model uses the dongle-pairing procedure.

Why is my HyperX Cloud III microphone not working on Windows?

Set the matching headset as the default recording device: “HyperX Cloud III” for wired or “HyperX Cloud III Wireless” for Wireless. Then check the physical control. On wired Cloud III, the detachable microphone must be connected and a lit mute LED means it is muted. On Wireless, press the mic button to toggle mute; holding it for three seconds changes mic monitoring instead.

Why is there no sound from my Cloud III?

Open Windows Sound settings and the Sound control panel, then set the correct Cloud III model as the default playback device. If only one game or call app has no sound, check that application’s own output menu as well. The wired and Wireless models use different endpoint names.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I pair Cloud III Wireless again?

Power off the headset and hold its power button until the status LED blinks red and green rapidly. Plug in the wireless dongle, then use a small tool to hold the button in the dongle’s pinhole until its LED blinks rapidly. Wait until both status LEDs become solid.

Why won’t my HyperX Wireless dongle work on PS5?

Test the dongle on another system, ideally a PC. If it works there but is not recognized by PS5, HyperX recommends connecting it through a USB hub with its own external power supply. If it fails on the other system too, this PS5-specific workaround does not establish a fix; contact HyperX if the documented checks do not help.

Will a regular, unpowered USB hub fix the PS5 dongle issue?

HyperX’s recommendation specifies an externally powered USB hub. The guidance does not establish an unpowered splitter as an equivalent solution.

Why did my NGENUITY setting disappear when I switched to console?

For wired Cloud III, NGENUITY settings configured over USB are not saved onto the headset. For Cloud III Wireless, settings other than auto-power-off are saved in software and do not carry over to another platform. A missing console setting therefore does not by itself prove a hardware fault.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I reinstall drivers or perform a firmware reset?

The documented HyperX instructions covered here do not establish a universal driver-reinstall, firmware-reset or hardware-repair procedure for every Cloud III problem. Use the model-specific endpoint, mute, pairing and PS5 checks first, then contact HyperX support.

The Bottom Line

Match the fix to the exact Cloud III model and symptom. Select the correct wired or Wireless endpoint for both playback and recording, check the physical microphone mute state, re-pair Wireless only when its dongle connection is lost, and reserve an externally powered USB hub for the documented case where the dongle works elsewhere but is not recognized by PS5. If those checks fail, contact HyperX with the model and platform details.
