Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Start by identifying where the failure occurs: Chrome may not start, a Google page may fail only in Chrome, several websites may be unreachable, Drive files may not open, or Google may reject your sign-in. Those symptoms point to different fixes. Work through the checks below from least disruptive to more involved, and avoid deleting browser profile data as a first step.
First, narrow down what is failing
Check whether the problem affects one Google service, several Google services, or unrelated websites too. Confirm the web address, reload the page, and try another site. If multiple sites fail, check Wi-Fi or Ethernet and whether other devices can reach the internet. For a slow or unavailable Drive page, testing another network can help distinguish a local connection problem from a browser or service issue.
- Chrome will not start: troubleshoot the browser itself.
- Chrome starts, but a Google page fails: compare Chrome with another browser, then test extensions and browser data.
- Drive files will not open or changes do not appear: check the connection and Drive’s browser requirements and offline settings.
- Google repeatedly asks you to sign in or rejects access: use the account sign-in troubleshooter rather than assuming Windows networking is at fault.
A Drive message such as “Temporary Error (502)” can indicate a temporary file-availability problem. Wait and try again, and check the Google Workspace Status Dashboard for a reported service issue. For general Chrome connection and loading errors, follow Google’s Chrome troubleshooting guidance.
If Chrome will not open
- Check for a Chrome process already running. Open Windows Task Manager, look for Chrome, and end the task if it is stuck in the background. Then try opening Chrome again.
- Restart the computer. This can clear a process or system state that is preventing startup.
- Check security software. Look for an antivirus or other security alert that may have blocked Chrome, and follow the software’s instructions to review the block.
- Reinstall Chrome if the earlier steps do not help. Google lists reinstalling as a later step for crashes or startup failures in its Chrome crash and startup guidance.
If Chrome opens but a page does not, try that page in another browser. If it works there, a Chrome-specific issue—such as an extension or profile setting—is more plausible. If it fails in multiple browsers, investigate the network or check whether the service is having an outage.

If a Google page will not load in Chrome
- Update Chrome, then restart it. Retry the page after restarting the browser.
- Test the page in Incognito. If it loads there, an extension or stored browser state may be involved. Disable extensions, then turn them back on one at a time, retrying the page to identify whether one causes the failure.
- Clear browsing data if needed. Cached files or site data can interfere with loading. This removes browser data for the selected time range and categories, so review the selections before confirming.
- Check firewall or antivirus interference. Security software can block a page or connection. Review its alerts and rules rather than turning protection off indefinitely.
- Free device memory. Close unused tabs and other tasks, then retry.
- Reset Chrome settings only after the simpler checks. Google’s Chrome settings reset instructions describe restoring selected settings to their defaults.
What a Chrome reset changes
A reset changes selected settings, including the search engine, homepage and startup settings, content settings, cookies and site data, extensions, and themes. Google says it does not delete or change saved bookmarks and passwords. Because it can remove site data and disable extensions, use it after testing the narrower fixes first.
If Drive files will not open or changes seem not to sync
These steps apply to Drive in a web browser. Start with connectivity and browser compatibility, then check offline access and local security software.

- Check the connection. Retry after confirming internet access. If the connection is weak, try another network if one is available. Drive may show “Trying to connect” when connectivity is weak.
- Check browser requirements. Google Drive’s troubleshooting guidance for Drive on the web says to use a supported browser and operating system, with cookies and JavaScript enabled.
- Clear cache and cookies, then retry. This can remove stale browser data that interferes with Drive. You may need to sign in again afterward.
- If offline access is configured, use it while disconnected. Google says Drive offline access lets you view and edit files, and changes sync when internet access returns.
- If offline access is already on but files still will not open, toggle its setting. In Drive settings, turn off the option to sync files for offline editing, then turn it on again, following Google’s troubleshooting instructions.
- Check security and network controls. Virus scanners, ad blockers, firewalls, and proxies can interfere with Workspace access. Review their rules or ask your network administrator if this is a managed work or school device.
If Google keeps asking you to sign in
Use Google’s “Can’t sign in to your Google Account” troubleshooter and choose the case that matches the problem, such as a forgotten username or password, a verification challenge, an error message, or a work or school account. The right recovery steps depend on the specific sign-in issue; a browser or network reset is not a universal account fix.

Chrome Sync and the separate Google Drive for desktop application are not the same as loading Drive in a browser. The browser steps above can help identify a general connection, Chrome startup, or account-access problem, but they do not establish a fix for Chrome Sync data problems or Drive for desktop file synchronization. If the failure is specifically in one of those sync features, use the current Google help instructions for that product and the exact error shown rather than changing browser settings at random.
