You can usually fix a godoc-lint finding by editing a Go comment or narrowly adjusting the rule’s configuration. Neither approach requires changing an exported name, its signature, or program behavior. First identify which linter and rule produced the diagnostic: standalone godoc-lint, golangci-lint, and revive can report overlapping documentation issues, but they do not necessarily enable the same checks.
Identify the linter and rule before editing
Read the complete diagnostic, including the rule name and any linter prefix. Then check the repository’s pinned linter version and configuration. The name “godoc-lint” may refer to the standalone project; a team may instead be seeing a comment-related check through golangci-lint or revive. Similar findings do not prove that the tools share rules, defaults, or configuration syntax.
- Record the issuing linter and specific rule.
- Check the version used by the project, not just the latest online documentation.
- Inspect the configuration and any exclusions that affect the rule or the file.
This distinction matters because the correct repair depends on the exact diagnostic and installed version. Avoid renaming or unexporting a symbol to silence a documentation check when preserving the API is the goal.
Repair missing or malformed comments
Go’s documentation convention is clear: the Go Authors’ Go Doc Comments guide says, “Every exported (capitalized) name should have a doc comment.” Put the comment immediately before its package-level declaration, with no blank line between the comment and declaration.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Write a comment that describes the symbol
Explain what the exported function, type, variable, or constant actually does. Include relevant behavior, inputs, results, constraints, or usage rather than adding a vague sentence solely to satisfy a checker. Some name-form rules expect the comment to begin with the identifier, such as // Client represents .... Follow the exact rule’s examples; a useful comment and the expected opening form can often satisfy the check without touching the declaration.
Use the required form for package and deprecation comments
A package-comment rule may require the comment to begin with Package <name>. Apply the package name and formatting required by the active linter. Command packages, test packages, and repository-specific conventions may receive special treatment, so check the rule rather than assuming every package is handled identically.

For a deprecation finding, use the documented Deprecated: prefix and accurately name the replacement or migration path when one exists. Do not label an API deprecated merely to clear a formatting diagnostic if that statement is not true.
Fix other comment-specific findings
The standalone godoc-lint project documentation describes checks that can include line length, unused links, and links to standard-library identifiers. The precise enabled rules, options, and test-file defaults vary.

- Unused link: remove the unused link definition or use it where it supports the documentation.
- Standard-library identifier link: add the link if the enabled rule requests one.
Treat these as comment repairs: none requires changing an exported declaration. Confirm the particular rule’s expectations before making edits, especially if the diagnostic comes from a runner that wraps or configures another linter.

Sometimes the comment is accurate and the finding reflects a repository policy choice—for example, the project deliberately uses a different documentation style or does not want a rule applied to a particular scope. In that case, disable or scope the specific rule only where the installed linter supports it.

golangci-lint’s false-positive documentation describes comment-related exclusions for that runner. Its configuration syntax and available options depend on the runner’s version; do not copy a setting from documentation for a different release or assume it applies to standalone godoc-lint or revive.

- Prefer a narrow rule or scope adjustment when the policy is intentional.
- Keep the rule enabled for other declarations where it helps maintain useful API documentation.
- Avoid broad comment exclusions without a repository-specific reason, since they can conceal genuine documentation problems.
Verify the fix without changing the API
- Rerun the same lint command and configuration that produced the finding.
- Review the diff to make sure it contains only the intended comment or configuration change.
- Check that the exported names and declarations remain unchanged; a comment-only edit should leave signatures, visibility, and runtime behavior alone.
