If an Apple Home accessory shows “No Response,” first check whether the problem affects one device, one manufacturer, or several manufacturers. That distinction points to the likely cause: an individual accessory or bridge on one hand, or a shared Apple device, Wi-Fi network, or home hub on the other. Work through the low-risk checks below before removing or resetting anything.

Start by identifying what is affected

Check the accessory in the Home app and, if available, in the manufacturer’s app. Then note whether the issue is limited to one accessory, affects devices from one manufacturer, or affects accessories from several manufacturers. Apple Support uses that distinction to guide troubleshooting: failures in the manufacturer’s app as well as Apple Home point more toward the accessory itself, while failures across manufacturers suggest checking shared connectivity and hubs. Apple’s accessory troubleshooting guidance recommends following the manufacturer’s instructions if a device needs to be reset.

  • One accessory or one manufacturer: Start with that device, its firmware, and any third-party bridge it uses.
  • Several manufacturers: Check the iPhone, iPad, or Mac controlling the home, the shared Wi-Fi network, and the home hubs.
  • Works locally but not remotely: Check the home hub setup. Apple Support says, “To control your accessories remotely, you must set up a home hub.”

Fix “No Response” after an accessory was added

If one manufacturer’s accessories are affected

  1. Turn on Bluetooth on the iPhone, iPad, or Mac you use to control the home.
  2. Restart the affected accessories. For a battery-powered device, remove and reinstall its batteries if the manufacturer’s instructions allow it.
  3. Open the manufacturer’s app and check for accessory firmware updates. If you use a third-party bridge, restart it.
  4. Restart your home hubs: HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV devices configured as hubs.
  5. If the device uses Thread, unplug the third-party accessory for 5 minutes, reconnect it, and wait 10 minutes for the Thread network to stabilize, as Apple Support instructs.
  6. If it still does not respond, remove the accessory from the Home app, then follow the manufacturer’s instructions to reset it and add it again. Contact the manufacturer if the accessory still fails.

If accessories from several manufacturers are affected

  1. Update the iPhone, iPad, or Mac used to control the home, then close and reopen the Home app.
  2. Make sure that device is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the accessories, and turn on Bluetooth.
  3. Restart the affected accessories and check their manufacturer apps for firmware updates. Restart any third-party bridges.
  4. Restart the modem or router, all home hubs, affected accessories, and the controlling iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
  5. If a third-party Thread accessory is involved, unplug it for 5 minutes, reconnect it, and allow 10 minutes for the Thread network to stabilize.
  6. Check whether a VPN or third-party security software is interfering with network connectivity. If these steps do not restore service across manufacturers, contact Apple Support.

If you can’t add an accessory

Setup problems differ from accessories that worked before and now show “No Response.” Verify compatibility and setup requirements before trying a reset. Apple says an iPhone or iPad is needed to add accessories; a Mac cannot add them. An iPhone user on iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories without a home hub, though Apple recommends a hub for the best experience.

  1. Confirm that the accessory supports Apple Home, HomeKit, or Matter. Check its manual for required hardware, software updates, or a step that must be completed in the manufacturer’s app.
  2. Use an iPhone or iPad, turn on Bluetooth, and check that it is on the same Wi-Fi network as existing accessories and home hubs.
  3. If the accessory is already associated with another home, it may need to be reset. Follow the manufacturer’s model-specific instructions.
  4. For an “Unable to add to home” message, check that the accessory has power, move it closer to the router during setup, and restart any bridges and home hubs.
  5. If Apple Home reports an incompatible network, check the accessory’s Wi-Fi requirements. Apple Support notes, “Some accessories aren’t compatible with 5.0 GHz networks”; some require a network supporting 2.4 GHz.

For model-specific setup steps, use Apple’s guide to adding a smart home accessory and the accessory manufacturer’s documentation.

Check HomePod and shared Wi-Fi problems

If HomePod or the network appears to be the common point of failure, open the Home app and check HomePod for alerts and its Wi-Fi signal indicator. Apple says two bars or fewer indicates a weak signal; moving HomePod closer to the router or access point, or reducing interference, may help. Check that HomePod and the active home hub are on the same network.

Router configuration can also prevent devices from reaching each other or the internet. Apple identifies blocked peer-to-peer traffic, unreachable hubs, multiple DHCP servers, incorrect DNS settings, and double NAT as possible issues. If you do not administer the router, ask your network administrator or internet service provider to check its configuration. Apple’s HomePod network troubleshooting instructions provide further guidance.

meross Smart Plug 15A, Works with Apple HomeKit, Voice & APP Control 4 Pack
  • Remote Control: To enable HomeKit remote control, you need a HomePod, an Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD, or an iPad. Set any of these Apple devices in your house as a HomeKit bridge and connect it to your home 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network. Keep in mind that once your HomeKit bridge is set up, it has to be kept online. If it is powered off or disconnected from the Wi-Fi, it will fail to respond when you intend to control the device remotely.
  • Voice Control: You can control your devices hands free, just give voice commands to turn on/off the connected devices. Compatible with Apple HomeKit, Apple Watch, Siri, Carplay, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant.
  • Compact Size: Smart plug occupies only one socket, the device allows you to stack two mini smart plugs in the same outlet, which is convenient and practical.
  • Schedule: You can schedule connected devices to turn on and off automatically by smart plugs. Save energy when lights are not needed or left on by accident. Sunrise and sunset setting are supported.
  • Quality: The meross Smart outlet is made of PC flame retardant material, and has been approved for safety and quality assurance. Certified by ETL and FCC, it supports home appliance up to 15A.

Consider replacing a router only if diagnosis points to persistent weak coverage, inadequate capacity, or hardware that does not support the devices in your home. First rule out a Wi-Fi network mismatch, weak placement, VPN or security-software interference, hub or bridge problems, and outdated accessory firmware. A new router is not a general fix for “No Response.”

Review HomeKit router restrictions carefully

If you use a HomeKit-enabled router and the problem involves an accessory’s connectivity or firmware updates, check that accessory’s Wi-Fi Network & Routers setting in the Home app. Apple’s HomeKit router guidance explains three choices:

Setting What it allows Trade-off
Restrict to Home Blocks internet access and access to local devices beyond what HomeKit requires. Provides the tightest restriction, but may prevent third-party services such as firmware updates from working.
Automatic Allows the connections recommended by the accessory manufacturer. Balances manufacturer compatibility with router controls.
No Restriction Allows broader network access. Is the least restrictive security choice.

Check the manufacturer’s network requirements before changing this setting. A less restrictive choice may restore a service, but it also permits broader access than “Restrict to Home.”
