To fix Android camera not working, first identify whether the problem is a crash, black preview, blurry image, failed save, or blocked third-party app. Restart the phone, check Camera permissions and privacy access, clear the Camera cache, update Android, and use Safe Mode; clean the lens only for optical symptoms.
Android menu names differ by manufacturer and version. The sequence below works as a diagnostic framework for Pixel, Samsung Galaxy, and other Android phones without treating one brand’s Settings path as universal.
Key takeaways
- Restart the phone, check camera permissions and the device-wide Camera access toggle, then force-stop the Camera app and clear its cache.
- Clean the lens only when the camera opens but photos are blurry, hazy, dark, or unable to focus; cleaning will not fix crashes, disabled permissions, or a damaged camera module.
- Check Settings > Storage because insufficient free space can prevent photos from saving and contribute to app instability.
- Test the built-in Camera app in Safe Mode; if the problem disappears, a downloaded app may be interfering with camera access.
- Persistent failure across the built-in app, multiple apps, and Safe Mode—especially after a drop or liquid exposure—should be escalated to the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider.
What symptom is your Android camera showing?
The fastest fix depends on the symptom. A camera that crashes needs different troubleshooting from a camera that opens normally but produces blurry photos.

| Symptom | Most likely area to check first | First useful action |
|---|---|---|
| Camera will not open, freezes, crashes, or shows “Camera Failed” | Temporary app or system problem | Restart the phone, force-stop Camera, clear its cache, and install updates. |
| Black preview or “camera unavailable” | Another app, permission, or privacy control | Close video, social, scanning, and recording apps; check Camera permission and Camera access. |
| Blurry, hazy, dark, or unfocused images | Dirty lens, obstruction, lighting, or optical damage | Remove the case or lens film and gently clean the camera lens. |
| Photos or videos will not save | Low storage or storage permission | Open Settings > Storage and free space after backing up important files. |
| Only one third-party app fails | That app’s permission, update, or compatibility | Test the built-in Camera app, then update or reinstall the affected app. |
How do you fix Android camera not working?
Follow these steps in order, stopping when the camera works again. Menu names vary between Android manufacturers and software versions, so a path shown for Pixel or Samsung may not appear exactly the same on Motorola, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Nothing, ASUS, or Sony phones.

1. Clean the lens if the camera opens but the picture is blurry
Gently wipe the camera lens with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth. Remove fingerprints, dust, a case edge, protective film, or another accessory that may cover the lens. Google specifically recommends cleaning the Pixel camera lens and laser sensor with a soft, clean cloth, while Samsung also lists lens cleaning as a focus and image-quality step in its Pixel camera troubleshooting guidance and Galaxy focus guidance.
Powering the phone off is optional for an external wipe. Do not scrape the lens, use abrasive material, spray liquid into openings, or pour cleaner directly onto the phone. A phone camera lens cleaning kit or soft microfiber lens cloth can be useful for this narrow optical problem. Disclosure: use a model-agnostic cleaning cloth or kit only as an external cleaning aid; it cannot repair camera crashes, permission problems, or physical module damage.
2. Restart the phone
Restart the Android phone before changing more settings. A restart can clear temporary processes and release the camera resource if another app or a stalled system process is holding it. Samsung places restart near the beginning of its Galaxy Camera app troubleshooting flow, and restarting is also a basic step in Google’s Android troubleshooting guidance.
3. Check app permission and device-wide Camera access
Android camera access can be blocked at two levels: the affected app’s permission and the phone’s device-wide privacy control.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps or Apps & notifications.
- Select Camera or the third-party app that cannot use the camera.
- Tap Permissions.
- Set Camera to an allowed option, such as Allow only while using the app.
On Pixel phones, Google documents the app-permission path in Change app permissions on your Pixel phone. If the built-in Camera app does not show a normal permission control, look for Settings > Security & privacy > Privacy > Camera access, or check Quick Settings for a Camera privacy toggle. Android also displays an indicator when an app is using the camera or microphone; Google explains the indicator and controls in Android camera and microphone privacy settings.
Work profiles, parental-control software, enterprise policies, and privacy or security utilities can also restrict camera access. Temporarily review those controls if the permission appears enabled but the camera remains unavailable.
4. Force-stop Camera and clear its cache
Force-stop the Camera app if it is frozen or repeatedly crashing, then reopen it.

- Open Settings > Apps > Camera.
- Tap Force stop, then confirm.
- Open the Camera app again.
- If the failure continues, open Storage & cache and tap Clear cache.
Clearing cache removes temporary data. Clear storage or Clear data is more destructive: Google distinguishes it from cache clearing because it removes the app’s stored data. Use it only after trying the safer steps and confirming that camera preferences and other app-specific settings can be recreated. Camera data clearing commonly resets camera settings, but behavior can differ by manufacturer build, so do not treat that result as universal.
5. Reset Camera settings and update the camera app
Some manufacturers provide a camera-specific reset that restores default camera settings without resetting the entire phone. On Samsung Galaxy devices, open the Camera app, go to Camera settings, choose Reset settings, and then check About Camera for a camera-app update. Samsung notes that the interface differs on newer Galaxy software, including One UI 7.0 and later; use the current instructions in its official Camera app support page.
On Pixel phones, use the Camera app’s App info page to force-stop the app, clear its cache, review permissions, and install available updates. Do not download a random or modified Camera APK as a first-line fix because an incompatible package can create additional security and compatibility problems.
6. Update Android and Google components
Update installed apps through Google Play Store > profile icon > Manage apps & device > Updates available. Google says that current app versions can provide newer features and improve security and stability; some updates require a restart. The exact Play Store process is documented in Google’s Android app-update instructions.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Also check for a system update. The usual paths are Settings > System > Software update on Google devices and Settings > Software update on Samsung devices. On Pixel and other Google-certified devices, check for a Google Play system update if the phone exposes that option. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends adequate storage before installing updates.
7. Check storage before troubleshooting failed saves
Open Settings > Storage when the camera takes a picture but cannot save it, or when the phone is unstable. Low storage can interfere with app operation and prevent new photos or videos from being written. Google’s Android storage guidance recommends reviewing storage and freeing space by deleting or moving files, uninstalling unused apps, or clearing appropriate app caches.

Back up important photos before deleting anything. Remove unnecessary videos, downloads, and unused apps first. Android devices do not share one reliable minimum-free-space threshold for Camera, so do not assume that a specific number of free gigabytes is required on every phone.
Could another app be using or blocking the camera?
Yes. Close video-call, social-media, QR/scanner, augmented-reality, camera-filter, and recording apps, then retry the built-in Camera app. Android shows an indicator when an app is using the camera and provides privacy controls for reviewing or disabling access, as described in Google’s camera and microphone access documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf the camera works after closing one particular app, update or reinstall that app and review its permissions. Screen overlays, accessibility services, privacy tools, automation utilities, and apps installed immediately before the failure deserve particular attention. If several camera apps fail, the cause is more likely system-level, policy-related, or hardware-related than a defect in one app.
How does Safe Mode identify a problem app?
Safe Mode temporarily prevents downloaded apps from running, so the test can show whether an installed app is interfering with camera access, overlays, accessibility, privacy controls, or system resources.
- Find the manufacturer’s official instructions for entering Safe Mode; the button sequence differs by Android model.
- Enter Safe Mode and open the built-in Camera app.
- If the camera works, restart normally and uninstall or disable recently added or suspicious apps one at a time.
- Retest after each removal until the interfering app is identified.
Google explains the general diagnostic principle in Android Safe Mode guidance: if the problem disappears in Safe Mode, a downloaded app may be responsible. Samsung includes the same type of test in its Galaxy camera troubleshooting flow. Safe Mode does not prove that the camera hardware is healthy if the problem is intermittent, so continue testing after returning to normal mode.
What should Pixel users do?
Pixel users should clean the lens and laser sensor, check Camera permissions, force-stop Camera, clear its cache, install Camera and Android updates, and test in Safe Mode. Google’s Pixel camera help page covers these steps and provides device-specific escalation when the camera continues to malfunction.

Pixel Settings labels can vary with Android version. Use the Camera app’s App info screen for permissions, force-stop, storage and cache controls rather than assuming that every Pixel model has identical menu wording.
What should Samsung Galaxy users do?
Samsung Galaxy users should restart the phone, reset Camera settings, check About Camera for updates, update the phone, review storage and permissions, and test in Safe Mode. Samsung’s current Galaxy Camera app troubleshooting instructions also explain that downloaded apps can cause freezing, crashing, lag, and camera-function problems.
Galaxy camera menus differ between One UI releases. Samsung specifically notes interface changes on One UI 7.0 and later, so follow the menu labels on the phone rather than relying on an older screenshot or universal Android path.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When is the Android camera probably damaged?
Hardware or environmental damage becomes more likely when the built-in Camera app fails after all software checks, the camera fails in Safe Mode and across multiple apps, the phone was dropped or bent, liquid reached the device, the camera cover is cracked, the lens will not focus after careful cleaning, or the camera module makes an unusual rattling sound.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Software troubleshooting cannot repair a damaged camera module, cracked lens cover, liquid damage, or a failed motherboard component. Do not open the phone or replace a camera module without exact-model repair documentation, suitable tools, and an understanding of possible water-resistance loss, data loss, warranty consequences, and component calibration. Samsung directs users toward support or service when focus problems remain after troubleshooting; an authorized Android phone repair provider is the safer escalation route when the device has physical damage or persistent cross-app failure.
Should you factory-reset the phone?
A factory reset should be a last resort, not an early Camera fix. Before resetting, back up photos and other data, confirm the Google or manufacturer account credentials needed after setup, and exhaust restarting, permission checks, cache clearing, updates, storage cleanup, Safe Mode, and manufacturer support.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if another app is blocking my Android camera?
Android camera not working because another app may be using it. Close video calls, social-media apps, scanners, augmented-reality tools, and recording apps, then retry the built-in Camera app. If Android shows a camera-use indicator, review the app using the camera and its permission.
What is the difference between clearing Camera cache and Camera data?
Clearing Camera cache removes temporary files and is generally the safer reset. Clearing Camera storage or data removes stored app data and may reset camera preferences, so use it only after trying cache clearing and confirming that settings can be recreated.
What does it mean if my Android camera works in Safe Mode?
If the camera works in Safe Mode, a downloaded app is probably interfering. Restart normally and uninstall or disable recently added or suspicious apps one at a time, testing the camera after each change.
Will a factory reset fix an Android camera that is not working?
A factory reset may remove a corrupted software configuration, but it cannot repair a damaged camera module, cracked cover, liquid damage, or motherboard fault. Back up your data and contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider before considering a reset.
The Bottom Line
Most Android camera problems are worth testing as software issues first: restart the phone, check permissions and privacy controls, clear Camera’s cache, update Android, and test Safe Mode. Clean the lens only for blurry or unfocused images. If the built-in camera still fails across apps or Safe Mode—especially after physical damage—use manufacturer support or an authorized repair service instead of opening the phone or factory-resetting it prematurely.
