Fix the error at the stage where it occurs: Gradle startup, plugin configuration, SDK lookup, dependency resolution, compilation, packaging, or runtime. For Android 16 (API 36), verify the AGP–Gradle pairing, the JDK Gradle actually uses, and the SDK packages in the build’s active SDK directory. If the build succeeds but the app behaves differently, investigate Android 16 runtime changes rather than changing Gradle versions.
Start with the first actionable error
Raising targetSdkVersion does not by itself identify why a build fails. The error may come from an unsupported toolchain, a missing SDK package, or an incompatible dependency or plugin. First note whether the failure occurs during Android Studio sync, a command-line build such as ./gradlew assembleDebug, CI, or packaging/upload. Focus on the earliest causal error; later stack-trace messages may be consequences.
Record the module and variant, Gradle wrapper version, Android Gradle Plugin (AGP) version, Android Studio version, JDK used by Gradle, compileSdk, targetSdk, installed SDK packages, and recent dependency or plugin changes. Android’s build documentation and AGP compatibility guidance provide the version context for diagnosing a specific error.
What AGP version do I need for API 36?
For stable releases, Android’s AGP compatibility table lists AGP 8.9.1 as the minimum for API 36, paired with Android Studio Meerkat 2024.3.1 Patch 1 or newer in its API-level table. The Android 16 SDK setup guide separately says to use AGP 8.9.0-rc01 or newer and identifies Android Studio Meerkat 2024.3.1 or higher as the best development experience. Treat the setup guide’s prerelease floor and the compatibility table’s stable minimum as distinct guidance; for a stable build, use the table’s stable minimum or a compatible later release. Check the current AGP compatibility table and Android Studio release information before upgrading.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
AGP and Gradle must be a supported pair. Do not independently set the wrapper to an arbitrary latest Gradle version: check the required Gradle version for the AGP release you choose, then update the distribution configured in gradle/wrapper/gradle-wrapper.properties. Android warns that using Android Studio or AGP versions below those required by a project’s targetSdk or compileSdk could lead to unexpected issues.
Keep the SDK settings straight: compileSdk determines which Android APIs are available to compile against; targetSdk opts the app into target-dependent runtime behavior. A change to one does not prove that a particular Gradle error was caused by the other. See the Android 16 SDK setup guide for API 36 configuration examples.

Why does Gradle say Android Gradle plugin requires Java 17?
AGP 8.x requires JDK 17 to run. The Java installed on your machine may not be the JDK that launches Gradle: Android Studio, a terminal, and CI can each use a different selection. Android’s Java versions in Android builds documentation gives this example when an AGP 8.x build runs under Java 11: “Android Gradle plugin requires Java 17 to run. You are currently using Java 11.”
- Android Studio: check the Gradle JDK setting used by the project.
- Terminal: check the environment’s
JAVA_HOMEand any Gradle configuration such asorg.gradle.java.home. - CI: inspect the JDK selected by the job that actually runs Gradle, not only the JDK on a developer workstation.
Set the Gradle runtime to JDK 17 or newer for AGP 8.x, while confirming that the rest of the build—including plugins and other tooling—supports the selected JDK.

Why can’t Gradle find Android SDK Platform 36?
Install Android SDK Platform 36 and an appropriate Android SDK Build-Tools 36.x package through SDK Manager. Also make sure the app module uses compileSdk = 36 if it needs API 36 APIs at compile time. Follow the package and configuration guidance in the Android 16 SDK setup guide.
A frequent source of confusion is installing the packages into one SDK directory while the failing build uses another. Check the SDK location used by Android Studio, the command line, or CI. The platform must be present in the SDK root used by the failing build; installing it elsewhere will not resolve a missing-platform error.

What if the error names a dependency or Gradle plugin?
Once the AGP–Gradle pair, JDK, and SDK packages are confirmed, follow the first error to the component it identifies. An Android library may require a higher compileSdk; a plugin may require a newer Gradle or AGP; and custom build logic may rely on AGP APIs that changed between releases.
- Identify the dependency, plugin, or custom build code named in the earliest causal error.
- Check that component’s own compatibility notes and required versions.
- Update the implicated component or the compatible toolchain pair, rather than changing unrelated versions all at once.
- When using Android Studio’s upgrade assistant, review proposed coordinated updates, including AGP, Gradle, IDE support, SDK Build-Tools, NDK, JDK, and third-party or internal plugins.
Android’s AGP release information and upgrade guidance cover compatibility checks to make before changing build components.

Why does the build pass but the app look different on Android 16?
A successful build followed by a changed layout, back-navigation experience, or large-screen presentation is a runtime migration issue, not a Gradle compatibility error. For apps targeting API 36 on Android 16, the platform disables the edge-to-edge opt-out, enables predictive-back system animations by default, and ignores some orientation, resizability, and aspect-ratio restrictions on displays with a smallest width of at least 600 dp, subject to documented exceptions.
Test the app on an Android 16 device or emulator. Review window insets and edge-to-edge layout, predictive-back handling, and adaptive behavior on large displays as applicable. Android’s Android 16 behavior changes and migration guidance describe the changes and recommend testing, including using compatibility toggles to focus on individual behaviors.
Check native libraries separately
If the app or one of its SDKs includes native .so libraries, check the library vendor’s Android 16 compatibility information and its guidance for 16 KB page-size alignment. Android 16 includes a compatibility mode for some apps built for 4 KB pages, while Android recommends 16 KB alignment for improved performance, reliability, and stability. Investigate native packaging or alignment errors on their own evidence; do not assume they were caused by changing targetSdkVersion. See Android’s 16 KB page-size guidance.
Check Play’s target API requirement separately
As of October 4, 2026, Google Play says that new apps and app updates must target API 36 or higher starting August 31, 2026. The stated exceptions are Wear OS and Android Automotive OS, which have an API 35 minimum, and Android TV and Android XR, which have an API 34 minimum. The policy page describes a possible extension to November 1, 2026, with extension forms expected in Play Console later in the year. Confirm the current requirement for your app category and the status shown in your Play Console on the Google Play target API requirements page.
