A Windows or Office license may be represented by a 25-character product key, but many modern purchases use a digital license tied to a device or Microsoft account instead. That distinction determines whether you should search for a printed code, check an email, sign in to an account, or reinstall without entering a key.
This guide covers Windows 10 and 11, Microsoft 365, Office 2021/2019/2016, preinstalled Office, retail purchases, volume licenses, and command-line tools that show licensing details.
What a Windows or Office product key looks like
A traditional Windows or Office product key is a 25-character code in this format:
XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
However, entering a key is no longer required for every installation. Windows 10 and Windows 11 commonly activate with a digital license. Microsoft 365 subscriptions are normally activated by signing in with the Microsoft account that owns the subscription. Office purchases can also be linked to an account after a one-time key redemption.

Check whether Windows needs a key
Before trying to recover a key, check the activation page. It may show that Windows is already activated with a digital license.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Activation.
- Read the activation status.
Typical messages include Windows is activated with a digital license and Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Go to Update & Security > Activation.
- Check the status shown under Windows activation.
If the same edition of Windows is reinstalled on that device, choose I don’t have a product key during setup. Once the computer is online, Windows should reactivate automatically. A free upgrade to Windows 10 or 11 normally creates a digital license, not a new key to retrieve.
The edition must match the digital license. For example, a Windows Home license will not activate a new installation of Windows Pro. Installing the wrong edition is a common reason an apparently valid license fails.
Where to find a Windows product key
New PC supplied by a manufacturer
For an OEM computer, the key may be preinstalled in the PC firmware. It may also be printed on the original packaging or on the attached Certificate of Authenticity (COA). Many newer PCs use digital activation, so there may be no separate sticker or card.
Boxed Windows copy
If you bought a boxed copy from an authorized retailer, check the label or card inside the Windows box. The code may be printed on a card rather than on the installation media.
Digital purchase from a retailer
Search the retailer’s confirmation email and digital order locker. Look for terms such as product key, activation key, or software download. Do not confuse an order number with the 25-character license key.
Purchase from Microsoft
For a purchase made through the Microsoft online store, check the purchase-confirmation email and the Microsoft account’s Order history. Microsoft says it keeps a record of product keys for purchases made through its online store. A Windows 10 or 11 Pro upgrade bought through the Microsoft Store app instead provides a digital license associated with the account used to buy it; check the confirmation email to identify that account.

Volume licensing, MSDN, and refurbished PCs
- Volume-license and MSDN keys are obtained through the relevant organization or program portal.
- For a refurbished PC, the refurbisher—not Microsoft—is responsible for providing the license key.
Use Command Prompt to inspect Windows licensing
Windows includes slmgr.vbs in %SystemRoot%\System32. These commands display licensing information, but they are not a supported way to reveal the complete installed Windows product key. Use an elevated Command Prompt for operations that install, remove, or change licensing data.
Display basic license information
cscript %windir%\system32\slmgr.vbs /dli
Display detailed license information
cscript %windir%\system32\slmgr.vbs /dlv
To inspect all applicable installed products, use:
cscript %windir%\system32\slmgr.vbs /dlv all
Check the activation expiration date
cscript %windir%\system32\slmgr.vbs /xpr
/xpr is especially useful for KMS clients. Retail and MAK activation is normally perpetual, so a permanent activation may not show a meaningful future expiration date.
Install a known Windows key
If you already have a valid key and need to replace the installed one, run this from an elevated Command Prompt:
cscript %windir%\system32\slmgr.vbs /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
This requires a valid, applicable 25-character key and replaces the currently installed key. To trigger activation afterward:
cscript %windir%\system32\slmgr.vbs /ato
Do not use random keys found online as a way to “repair” activation. A key must match the Windows edition and license channel, and unauthorized keys may stop working.
What happens after a major hardware change?
A significant hardware change—particularly a motherboard replacement—can break the relationship between a digital license and the device. Linking the license to a Microsoft account gives Windows a way to identify the license after the change.
If activation fails after hardware work:
- Sign in with the Microsoft account previously linked to the digital license.
- Open the Windows activation page.
- Run the Activation troubleshooter.
- Choose the option indicating that hardware was recently changed, if it is offered.
This process cannot turn a Home license into Pro, and it does not replace proof of a separately purchased license.

How to find a Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365 license
Word, Excel, Outlook, and other Office apps do not display the complete product key. For Microsoft 365, Office 2021, Office 2019, and Office 2016, the app normally displays the Microsoft account associated with the license instead.
Identify the account used by Office
- Open a document in Word, Excel, or another Office app.
- Select File > Account.
- Look beneath the product name for Belongs to.
- Record the email address shown there.
That account is usually more useful than a key. Sign in with it at the Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page to reinstall Microsoft 365 or a retail Office license. A key is generally not required for reinstallation.
Microsoft 365 subscriptions
A Microsoft 365 subscription purchased directly online normally uses account sign-in rather than a product key. If you received a new Microsoft 365 product-key card, redeem it at Microsoft365.com/setup or Office.com/setup. Redemption is normally a one-time process that adds the product to the Microsoft account.
If Office shows SUBSCRIPTION EXPIRED, renew the Microsoft 365 subscription. If it shows PRODUCT NOTICE: Most of the features of [app] have been disabled because it hasn’t been activated, sign in with the owning account, start the included trial, or purchase Office.
Retail Office bought from Microsoft Store
For Office Home & Student, Office Home & Business, Office Professional, or an individually purchased Office app bought through the Microsoft Store:
- Go to www.microsoftstore.com.
- Select Sign in.
- Select your account name in the upper-right corner.
- Open Order History.
- Find the Office purchase and select Install Office.
In this particular Microsoft Store workflow, Install Office displays the product key but does not actually install Office. A key shown in Microsoft Store Order History may differ from one shown on the Microsoft account’s Services & subscriptions page. Microsoft says this is normal because they are different types of keys.
Office included with a new PC
A new computer showing Let’s get started may contain only a one-month Microsoft 365 Family trial or an unactivated preinstalled copy of Office. That screen does not prove that a paid Office license was included.
If a paid Microsoft 365 or one-time Office offer was included, a digital product key may be transmitted to the PC when Windows is activated. There may be no printed key; activation is completed by signing in with a Microsoft account. The manufacturer generally supplies no separate printed key unless you purchased a product-key card.

Workplace Discount Program and volume-license Office
Microsoft Workplace Discount Program is the current name for the former Home Use Program. Office Professional Plus, Visio Professional, and Project Professional bought through that program require the program’s product key during installation. On the activation screen, select I don’t want to sign in or create an account if that is the documented activation route for your purchase.
Volume-license Office Professional Plus installations are managed by the organization. Contact the organization’s administrator for the key or activation instructions.

ospp.vbs is intended for volume-license and non-subscription Office licensing scenarios. It does not apply to Microsoft 365 Apps subscriptions. Run it with cscript.exe from an elevated Command Prompt, using the path to the script in your Office installation directory.
Typical commands are:
cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus
This displays Office licensing information and the last five characters of installed keys. To inspect all installed Office licenses:

Neither command reveals a complete Office product key.
Install and activate a known Office key
cscript ospp.vbs /inpkey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
cscript ospp.vbs /act
To remove an installed key when you know its last five characters:
cscript ospp.vbs /unpkey:XXXXX
The exact script location varies by Office installation. Run the command from the directory containing ospp.vbs, or provide its full path. The script requires administrator privileges; remote use also requires the appropriate WMI configuration and firewall access.

For Microsoft 365 Apps and subscription versions of Project or Visio, ospp.vbs is the wrong tool. Microsoft directs administrators to use the PowerShell script vnextdiag.ps1 instead.
What not to expect from key-finder commands
Many websites recommend registry searches or scripts that claim to reveal every Windows and Office key. These methods are unreliable for modern licensing:
- A digital Windows license does not contain a full recoverable key to display.
slmgr.vbs /dliand/dlvshow licensing data, not a supported complete-key recovery method.ospp.vbs /dstatusshows only the last five characters and does not support Microsoft 365 Apps subscriptions.- Office apps show the associated account, not the full key.
- A key embedded in firmware may be replaced by a digital entitlement after activation, so a tool may not show the code you expect.
Use the purchase email, retailer account, Microsoft Order history, product packaging, or the linked Microsoft account as the authoritative source.
Quick recovery checklist
- Check Windows activation in Settings > System > Activation on Windows 11 or Settings > Update & Security > Activation on Windows 10.
- For Office, open an app and check File > Account > Belongs to.
- Search purchase-confirmation email for the key or the Microsoft account used for purchase.
- Check Microsoft account Order history and Services & subscriptions.
- Inspect the PC packaging, COA, or Office product-key card.
- For a company-owned installation, ask the IT administrator.
- Use
slmgr.vbsorospp.vbsto diagnose licensing status—not to assume that a complete key can always be recovered.
FAQ
Can I find my full Windows key with Command Prompt?
Not reliably or through a Microsoft-supported recovery command. slmgr.vbs /dli and /dlv display licensing information, but they do not provide a supported method for displaying the complete installed product key. Many Windows 10 and 11 installations use a digital license instead.

How do I find the Office key already installed on my PC?

Bottom line: Start by identifying the license type. Windows activation settings and the Office File > Account page often prove that no key needs to be recovered. Search email, Microsoft Order history, retailer lockers, packaging, and COA labels for traditional keys. Use slmgr.vbs and ospp.vbs for licensing diagnostics, but do not expect them to reveal a complete modern Windows, Office, or Microsoft 365 key.
