Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteStart with your computer’s built-in storage view: it shows which broad categories are using space without requiring another app. If that view is too general, inspect your largest folders and sort their files by size. The steps depend on whether you use Windows, macOS, or Linux.
See what is using space in Windows 10 or 11
Check the category overview
-
Open Settings > System > Storage.
-
Review the categories, such as Installed apps, Temporary files, and System & reserved. Select a category for more detail where available.
System & reserved is not a list of files to delete. It includes space reserved for temporary files, caches, and other system needs; Windows may also use reserved space for processes such as an update when the device is low on space. See Microsoft’s explanation of Storage settings and reserved storage.
Use Cleanup recommendations carefully
In Storage settings, select Cleanup recommendations to review suggested categories, including Temporary files, Large or unused files, Files synced to the cloud, and Unused apps. Windows estimates how much space each selection could save; check the items before choosing Clean up. Deleting a previous Windows installation removes Windows.old and the option to return to that previous version. Details are in Microsoft’s guide to freeing drive space.

Know what Storage Sense will and will not scan
Storage Sense works on the system drive, usually C:. To inspect another drive, use Storage used on other drives in Storage settings. Its behavior depends on your settings: by default, Downloads and cloud content are not touched unless configured. Windows 11 version 22H2 documentation describes a default OneDrive online-only period of 30 days, but settings and Windows versions can differ. Review Microsoft’s Storage Sense settings rather than assuming your installation uses the same choices.

Check storage on a Mac
Open the storage breakdown
On macOS Ventura 13 or later, choose Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage. On earlier macOS releases, choose Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage. The panel groups used space by category and may take time to update after space is freed. Apple documents both paths in How to free up storage space on your Mac.
Interpret System Data (or Other)
System Data, called Other in some versions, is a broad category for Apple and third-party files that do not fit a more specific category. It does not identify one file or mean that system files are safe to remove. Check category details where offered, then look at files you control, such as Downloads, media, apps, and old device backups. Moving a file to Bin alone does not free its space; empty Bin when you are sure you no longer need its contents.

Find space usage in Linux with GNOME
GNOME’s Disk Usage Analyzer, also known as Baobab, can scan a selected local folder, your home folder, a remote folder, or internal storage devices. Its ring chart and treemap help show how usage is distributed. A scan can take time; if a directory cannot be scanned, that failure does not prove it uses no space. GNOME’s help covers both the tool and troubleshooting directories that cannot be scanned.

For a technical Windows alternative, Microsoft Sysinternals DU v1.62 reports directory sizes recursively by default and can limit depth or output CSV. Its documentation, by Mark Russinovich, was published November 4, 2020, and Microsoft Learn lists a last update of July 19, 2022. See Microsoft’s DU documentation. It is useful when a sortable folder list or built-in category summary is not detailed enough, but most people should start with Storage settings or File Explorer.

Keep files without keeping them on the computer
If you identify large files you want to retain but do not need locally, you can move them to an external USB drive or other suitable external storage. Confirm that the drive has enough free capacity and a compatible connector, then verify the files are present on the drive before removing the local copies. Apple and Microsoft both describe external storage as an option for keeping personal files while freeing computer storage: see Apple’s Mac storage guidance and Microsoft’s Windows guidance.
