To remove personal data from an AI chatbot, you must clear more than the visible conversation list. First inventory every account and app you use, export anything you may need, delete chats or activity, clear saved memories separately, disable future training or retention, revoke shared links, disconnect connected apps, and then use the provider’s privacy-request process if information still appears in responses. Deletion is not always immediate everywhere: providers may keep data temporarily for safety, legal, service, or de-identification purposes, and connected services can retain their own copies.
Where can an AI chatbot keep my personal data?
Your data can exist in several stores that have different controls. Deleting one store does not automatically clear the others.
- Conversation history: The messages and files shown in the chatbot’s chat list.
- Saved memory or personalization: Facts, preferences, names, or instructions the assistant stores for use in future chats.
- Activity logs: A separate account timeline used for product history, analytics, or settings. Gemini calls this Gemini Apps Activity; other services use different names.
- Training and improvement copies: Data selected for model-improvement processes, sometimes after de-identification.
- Shared links: Public or semi-public URLs that expose a conversation snapshot.
- Connected-app copies: Data sent to cloud drives, email, calendars, browser extensions, or other integrations.
- Provider backups and safety records: Temporary or legally required copies that may not appear in your account.
- Local device records: Browser history, downloaded exports, screenshots, notification previews, and app caches.
Make a list of every chatbot account, phone app, browser sidebar, personal workspace, school or employer workspace, and connected service you have used. A managed workspace can apply different retention and administrator-access rules from a personal account, even when the interface looks similar.

What should I do before deleting chatbot data?
Decide whether you need a record, identify the account that owns it, and preserve evidence before pressing a permanent-delete control.

1. Inventory accounts and copies
- Record the email address or sign-in method for each account, including “Continue with Google,” Apple, Microsoft, or an employer identity provider.
- Check mobile apps, desktop apps, browser extensions, and built-in assistant sidebars; they may use a different account from the website.
- List shared conversation links and integrations that received chatbot content.
- Separate personal accounts from organization-managed accounts. Administrators, e-discovery systems, or company policies may control workplace data.
2. Export records you are allowed to keep
Export before deletion if a conversation is needed for legal, financial, medical, educational, or project records. ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot document export controls. Save the export in an encrypted location, limit access, and delete the local copy when it is no longer needed. An export is a copy of your data, not a deletion request.
3. Note the deletion date and scope
Write down which account, date range, chats, memories, links, and integrations you removed. This makes it easier to distinguish an unfinished cleanup from data that a provider is retaining under a stated exception.

How do I delete my ChatGPT history?
In ChatGPT, clear conversation history in Data controls, then inspect Personalization for memories. Turning off model improvement prevents eligible new personal-workspace conversations from being used for improvement; it does not remove existing chats.
- Open ChatGPT and select Settings.
- Open Data controls. Use the control for an individual conversation or the option to clear all chat history.
- In the same area, turn off Improve the model for everyone if you do not want eligible future personal-workspace conversations used to improve models.
- Open Personalization, review the memory list, and delete each item you do not want retained. Clear all memories if you want a complete reset.
- Use the data-export control before deletion when you need a copy, or use the account-deletion control when you intend to close the account.
- Revoke any shared links and disconnect integrations separately; deleting the chat does not remove copies already sent elsewhere.
Temporary Chat is a preventive option for sensitive conversations: it does not appear in history, does not create memories, and is not used to improve models while retained for safety purposes. It is not a way to erase information that was already stored in an ordinary chat.
How do I delete Gemini activity?
Gemini deletion is managed through Gemini Apps Activity or Google My Activity. You can remove one item, a day, a custom date range, or all activity.

- Open Gemini or Google My Activity and select Gemini Apps Activity.
- Choose the specific prompt or response, a day, a custom range, or the option to delete all activity.
- Review the auto-delete setting. Google offers periods of 3 months, 18 months, or 36 months, as well as no auto-delete.
- Turn off Keep Activity to prevent future chats from appearing in Activity and from being used to train Google AI, unless you submit feedback that includes the content.
- Delete data in connected Google services or other receiving apps; removing Gemini activity does not erase those separate copies.
When Keep Activity is off, Google says it retains chats for 72 hours for service operation, feedback handling, and safety. That short-term retention is different from the visible Activity history.

How do I clear Copilot chat history?
Microsoft Copilot lets you remove a single conversation from the history list or clear Copilot activity through the Microsoft privacy dashboard. Memory and personalization are separate settings.
- Sign in to the Copilot account that contains the chats.
- In the conversation list, open the menu for a chat and choose the delete command.
- For a broader cleanup, open the Microsoft privacy dashboard and use the Copilot activity-history controls to clear the relevant period.
- Use the dashboard’s export option first if you need a record.
- Open Copilot’s personalization or memory controls. Choose Delete all Memory, or ask Copilot to forget a particular item, and disable personalization if you do not want it used going forward.
- Review the training-use opt-out separately. Deleting activity does not change that preference.
Copilot’s consumer controls may differ from those in Microsoft 365, Windows, or an employer-managed tenant. If the account belongs to an organization, ask the administrator which retention, audit, and legal-hold rules apply before assuming a personal-account deletion control is sufficient.
How do I delete Claude conversations?
Anthropic’s consumer Claude dashboard allows you to delete conversations. The conversation disappears from your history immediately, while backend deletion follows the provider’s retention process and stated exceptions.
- Sign in to Claude and open the conversation dashboard.
- Use the conversation menu to delete individual chats, or use the available bulk-delete control for a wider cleanup.
- Review account personalization, projects, or other features that may contain copied instructions or files, and remove those separately.
- Open the improvement-data setting and disable use for improvement if you do not want eligible future conversations used that way.
- Use Anthropic’s account or privacy channel if you need access, deletion, or clarification beyond the dashboard controls.
Does deleting a chat delete saved memory?
No. Chat history and memory are separate stores. OpenAI says deleting a chat does not automatically delete a saved memory, and Microsoft says turning off memory does not delete conversation history.

- In ChatGPT, open Settings > Personalization and delete individual memories or all memories.
- In Copilot, use Memory controls, including Delete all Memory or a request to forget a named fact.
- In Gemini or Claude, inspect the personalization, profile, project, or custom-instruction areas available to your account; remove content from each applicable area.
Test whether a memory remains
After clearing memories, start a new conversation and ask what the assistant remembers about you. Treat the answer as a diagnostic, not proof of complete erasure: a response may be generated from the current prompt, an uploaded file, a connected service, or an organization’s context rather than a saved-memory record.

How do I stop chatbots from saving or training on future conversations?
Deletion handles existing records; opt-out and retention settings reduce what is created later. Set both, because one does not substitute for the other.
- ChatGPT: Turn off “Improve the model for everyone” in Data controls. Use Temporary Chat for conversations that should not enter history or create memories while retained for safety.
- Gemini: Turn off Keep Activity. Understand that Google still keeps chats for 72 hours for service, feedback, and safety, and feedback can include the conversation.
- Copilot: Opt out of training use and disable personalization or memory in their separate controls.
- Claude: Review the improvement-data setting and the retention disclosure before sending sensitive content.
These settings normally apply to the account and product context in which they are changed. Check every signed-in account, browser profile, mobile app, and managed workspace.
How long do providers retain data after I delete it?
“Deleted” can mean removed from the interface, queued for backend deletion, or detached from your account while a safety or training copy remains. The provider statements below describe different stages and should not be treated as a universal guarantee.

Keep the provider’s stated window with your deletion record. If the period has passed and information still appears, escalate rather than repeatedly deleting the same visible chat.
What should I do about shared links and connected apps?
Secondary copies require their own deletion actions. A chatbot cannot erase a file, message, or link after another service has received it.
Revoke shared conversations
Open the chatbot’s shared-link manager, locate each published conversation, and revoke or delete the link. Check browser bookmarks, team documentation, issue trackers, and messages where the URL was pasted. Anyone who copied the text or took a screenshot may still possess a copy that revocation cannot retrieve.

Disconnect integrations and clean the receiving service
- List every connected drive, calendar, email account, browser extension, plug-in, or automation that could have received prompts, files, or responses.
- Disconnect the integration in the chatbot’s settings.
- Delete the copied records in the receiving service, including trash or recycle-bin areas where applicable.
- Review access logs and shared permissions if the data was visible to other users.
Google explicitly warns that deleting Gemini activity does not delete data saved by other services. The same principle applies generally: remove the source record and each downstream copy.

If a chatbot continues to produce your personal information after you have removed visible chats and memories, use the provider’s privacy or erasure process. This is different from deleting a conversation.
- OpenAI: The documented “Remove my personal data from ChatGPT responses” request covers inaccurate, excessive, irrelevant, or no-longer-appropriate information and is assessed case by case.
- Other providers: Use the account privacy center or data-rights channel for access, deletion, correction, or objection requests. Include the account identifier, examples of the output, dates, and why the information is yours or inaccurate.
Do not include more sensitive information than necessary in the request. Save the confirmation number and the exact response examples so you can follow up without recreating the entire conversation.

Verification should cover each data layer, not just the chat list.
- Sign out and back in, then confirm the selected chats or activity ranges are gone.
- Check the memory or personalization panel independently.
- Inspect shared-link lists and test an old link in a private browser window.
- Review connected-app permissions and delete downstream copies.
- Check whether the training, improvement, Keep Activity, or personalization opt-out is still enabled.
- Remove downloaded exports, screenshots, browser downloads, and notification previews from devices you control.
- Record the provider’s stated deletion window and check again after it passes.
If an item remains because of a legal, security, safety, or de-identification exception, ask the provider which category applies and whether the data is still linked to your account.
What are the most common deletion mistakes?
- Only deleting the visible chat: Memories, activity logs, links, and connected-app copies remain.
- Confusing an opt-out with erasure: Disabling model improvement changes future use; it does not delete old history.
- Closing the browser instead of the account: Browser history and cache controls affect your device, not provider storage.
- Deleting the source but not the export: A downloaded JSON, PDF, screenshot, or copied note is still a personal-data copy.
- Using a generic cleaner or VPN: Device-cleaning and network-privacy tools do not delete data held by the chatbot provider.
- Ignoring a work or school account: Organization policies, administrators, archives, and legal holds can override personal-account expectations.
- Assuming a response proves memory storage: The assistant may be using the current prompt, a file, an integration, or managed workspace context.
When should I delete the entire chatbot account?
Account deletion is appropriate when you no longer need the service and want to remove account-level settings along with its stored content. It is broader and less reversible than deleting selected chats, and it may not erase copies held by connected services, employers, legal archives, or model-improvement systems covered by an exception.

Before closing an account, export records you are entitled to keep, revoke shared links, disconnect integrations, delete downstream copies, clear memories, and submit any required privacy request. Keep the deletion confirmation and the date on which the provider says backend processing should finish.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can my employer or school still access an AI-chat conversation I deleted?
Possibly. A managed workspace may retain audit logs, backups, or legal-hold copies controlled by the organization rather than by your personal chatbot settings. Ask the administrator or privacy officer which policy governs that account and whether deletion requests must go through the organization.
Does deleting browser history remove my chatbot data?
No. It removes local browsing records only. Provider history, memories, activity logs, shared links, downloaded exports, and copies in connected services require separate actions.

The response may come from the current prompt, an uploaded document, a connected app, a shared workspace, or a model that retained permitted de-identified information. Capture the exact output and submit a privacy or erasure request if it contains personal information that should not appear.
Should I delete feedback I submitted to an AI chatbot?
Yes, if the provider offers a separate feedback or rating history. Feedback can include the conversation text and may be retained under rules different from ordinary chat history, so inspect that control when available.
